[Regnum] In Iran, women who refuse to wear the hijab will begin to receive psychological assistance. This was announced on November 14 by the head of the Iranian Women and Family Department of the Headquarters for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, Mehri Talebi.
"A psychological clinic aimed at preventing the removal of the hijab will open in Tehran for teenagers, young men and women," Al Arabiya TV channel quotes Talebi as saying.
She said the clinic would educate potential patients about the ins and outs of wearing the hijab and provide "scientific and psychological" treatment for the urge to remove the hijab.
At the same time, patients will be in the clinic "on a voluntary basis," the official claims. Thus, Talebi noted, the institution's activities will promote "dignity and modesty."
As reported by Regnum news agency, on November 9, Akha Daryaei, a student at the Islamic Azad University in Tehran who stripped down to her underwear on November 2 in protest against wearing the hijab, was placed in a psychiatric hospital.
Government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani said she had been transferred from the police station to a rehabilitation centre, but did not specify what treatment she had been given. Mohajerani said the student was a "problem person" who needed treatment. She was not allowed to return to university and any further decisions could only be made after treatment, she added.
A university spokesman, Amir Mahjob, said the girl had been under intense psychological pressure and suffered from a mental disorder, as established at the police station. According to human rights activists, the Iranian authorities have repeatedly declared women who disagree with the government's ideology to be mentally unstable. There have been cases of forced hospitalization, notes the IranWire publication.
