Follows my theory and pontification:

The kids of the '60s and '70s used loud-mouth antics to be heard because (1) it got them noticed and (2) it PO'd "the Man".

Those that developed a taste for politics and other forms of coprophagia naturally gravitated to the Democratic Party as the GOP didn't want anything to do with them. Now 50 years later, it's all they know.
