Bulgaria to put five on trial over deaths of 18 Afghan refugees
2025-04-03
[KhaamaPress] Five individuals will stand trial in Bulgaria for their involvement in the deaths of 18 Afghan refugees, who suffocated in a truck.

The Bulgarian government has announced that the Sofia Prosecutor’s Office will put five individuals on trial for their involvement in an organized criminal group, human trafficking, and the death of 18 Afghan refugees in 2023.

According to the Bulgarian News Agency, on Tuesday, April 1, two of the accused witnesses testified that the Afghan refugees could not breathe properly due to "excessive pressure from each other."

The report stated that despite noticing the issue, the accused continued to close the truck doors and kept driving.

The prosecutor’s office further reported that the refugees died from "suffocation in an extremely painful condition."

The press center of Sofia added that the trial date has yet to be set.

This action follows the discovery of the bodies of 18 refugees found in a truck near the village of Lukorsko, 16 kilometers from Sofia, in early February 2023.

It was reported that over 50 people had been hiding in a secret compartment under a pile of wood in the truck. The bodies of these refugees were transferred from Sofia to Kabul several months later, in June 2023.
