#3 Memorial Day grew out of the Civil War. Though non-partisan it still took generations to gain acceptance nationwide, and then only because it was expanded to honor WWII (and later - WWI was initially covered by Veterans/Armistice Day) losses. Now it is at least as much a start of summer holiday for most as an honoring of those who gave their lives for our country. (Please, no ‘Happy Memorial Day ‘) |

#2 Today is a difficult and quiet time for most. The families and the fallen are over us in every thought. Today we grill and drink beer. We celebrate those that are near, as those that have fallen would have wanted. Some say there is more to this holiday than grills and beer, maybe so, but it all starts there, with friend and family. |
