Cincinnati brawl arrests: Detective says fight was 'coordinated' by 2 suspects
[Cincinnati.com] Two men charged in a downtown Cincinnati fight that was caught on viral video are accused of coordinating the assault, according to prosecutors.

Montianez Merriweather, 34, and Jermaine Matthews, 39, are facing charges in Hamilton County Municipal Court, including felonious assault and aggravated riot.

Merriweather was out on bond when police said he was involved in the early morning brawl on July 26 in downtown Cincinnati. He received a $500,000 bond during a July 30 arraignment in Hamilton County Municipal Court. Matthews was given a $100,000 bond, although a judge is expected to set an additional bond on July 31.

'EXTREME BEHAVIOR, EXTREME VIOLENCE'
Cincinnati police Detective Barney Blank said video of the incident shows Merriweather walking up to Matthews, whispering something to him and approaching one of the victims from behind before striking him in the face.

Merriweather and Matthews then chased the victim, who was trying to retreat, to the ground before punching and kicking him, Blank said. The detective added that Merriweather went after another man.

"We believe that he coordinated this with Mr. Matthews," Blank said.
Ugh. The new Knockout Game?

-Great Cultural Revolution
Study Reveals Real Reason Behind Surge in Homelessness, and It's Not What the Dems Tell You
[Red State] It’s a "housing crisis." It’s because Republicans are evil and don’t care about the downtrodden. It’s because capitalism is cruel. It's because we don't throw enough money at the problem.

We’re talking about the homelessness crisis, and the Democrats who are in charge of many of the cities hardest hit by the devastation will blame almost anything other than their own failed policies. But according to a study from researchers at the University of Chicago and Dartmouth College—not exactly institutions known as conservative bastions—there’s another reason behind the startling rise in the homeless population, and it’s not what Gavin Newsom, JB Pritzker and the mainstream media are telling you.

The study was released in April, but I can’t remember CNN, MSNBC, the New York Times, or any other liberal outlet talking about it. The paper, titled simply, "Asylum Seekers and the Rise in Homelessness," is getting renewed attention, and the abstract pretty much tells you everything you need to know:

Data from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) indicate an unprecedented 43 percent increase in the number of people residing in homeless shelters in the United States between 2022 and 2024, reversing the gradual decline over the preceding sixteen years. Three quarters of this rise was concentrated in four localities – New York City, Chicago, Massachusetts, and Denver – where large inflows of new immigrants seeking asylum were housed in emergency shelters. Using direct estimates from local government sources and indirect methods based on demographic changes, we estimate that asylum seekers accounted for about 60 percent of the two year rise in sheltered homelessness during this period, challenging media and policy narratives that primarily attribute this rise to local economic conditions and housing affordability.

#2  Portland spent $724,000,000 on homelessness in 2024 with no visible effect. There's no reason to think that doubling that amount would solve the problem.

#3  Rehab is a worthwhile benefit for drug addicted homeless. Outrageous benefits for the homeless attract more homeless folks and discourages the addicts from rehab. There needs to be support for folks who have had a bad turn or have mental health issues, but those programs need to include drug testing to ensure that the addicts end up with the choice of jail or rehab. All benefits for aliens should be short term and include ICE notification.

#4  I have bona fides in the rehab department and will tell you that if the person is not ready, it is pointless.

If the choice is jail or rehab. Majority will choose rehab. But they are gonna relapse and not stay clean. Are you prepared to lock up 98% of who make this choice.

And then we have the jail part. Jail is not wholesome and when you are processed, they check if you are an alcoholic or addict and give you a pill regime to manage your addiction. For Benzo they give you benzodiazepines, and heroin they give you methadone. For alcohol, there's a withdraw pill too. And if you tell them you are addicted to all three, the pill combo they give you will leave you drooling on yourself the entire time you are in the clink.

Sounds good on paper, but IRL --- not so much gets solved.

Oldest federal judge shelved another year for repeatedly ducking required mental health exams and doctor probes
"A judicial council on Monday said the nation's oldest sitting federal judge — 98-year-old Pauline Newman, who was shelved in 2024 amid complaints about her mental health — will be barred from the bench for another year after extending her suspension, noting how there's "no room for doubt" that she needs a "full neuropsychological battery of tests," which she has refused to do."

Seriously, there needs to be a mandatory annual mental & drug test for all Federal officials, appointees and employees.

#1  Back in the late 60's there was a covey of quail that strolled through a "Rad-waste pit", crossing the roadway and died. They had to dig up the roadway section.

Then there are the 100's of leaks and reports of contaminated fish, snakes, gators and other wildlife that hover around the warmed discharge waters, creeks and streams and Savannah River area that the SRP run-offs flows into.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syria moves to revive key port, border crossings in drive for economic recovery: Official
Still definitely evil, but so much better suited to govern than ISIS or Al Qaeda v.1. Interview transcript can be read at the link.
[Rudaw] Syria is ramping up efforts to revitalize its port infrastructure and border operations, securing major investment deals with global logistics giants, a bigwig from the General Authority for Land and Sea Border Crossings told Rudaw. However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
significant challenges persist at land border crossings, particularly in areas outside full government control.

In a Tuesday interview, Mazen Alloush, Director of Public Relations at the General Authority, highlighted recent progress in attracting global logistics players. He noted that French shipping giant CMA CGM and Dubai-based logistics firm DP World are now involved in long-term development projects for Latakia and Tartous ports, respectively.

CMA CGM recently secured a 30-year concession for Latakia Port involving an estimated investment of $260 million, while DP World’s 30-year concession for Tartous Port is valued at approximately $800 million.

Alloush mentioned ongoing efforts "with another major international operator" regarding "a new port operation agreement [that] is expected to be signed in the coming weeks," and pointed to plans to develop the Baniyas Port, "currently used only for oil shipments, into a commercial port soon."

The General Authority also oversees ten Free Zones across Syria. According to Alloush, there are "extensive investment plans" in place to modernize and expand these zones into "internationally competitive hubs."

Regarding Syria’s land border crossings, Alloush confirmed that 11 out of approximately 20 are currently operational. These include six crossings with The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund...
, three with Leb
...The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozen flavors of Christians, plus Armenians, Georgians, and who knows what else?...
, one with Jordan, and one with Iraq. He mentioned plans to reactivate additional crossings, including the al-Tanf-al-Waleed crossing with Iraq and the al-Dabbousiyah crossing with Lebanon.

Border traffic has also increased significantly. "From the beginning of the year until today, we have received over five million travelers through our border crossings - three million arrivals and two million departures," Alloush stated.

Despite these developments, he acknowledged the ongoing challenge posed by border crossings located in northeastern Syria (Rojava), particularly in areas controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
he expressed optimism that the implementation of the key March 10 agreement - signed between Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa and SDF chief Mazloum Abdi to integrate civil and military institutions in Rojava under state control - "will allow us to assume control" and have all border crossings "be under unified national administration."

Alloush also addressed the Semalka border crossing with the Kurdistan Region, calling it "our most strategic crossing," through which "a large volume of goods enters Syria." He further pointed to communication between the Syrian foreign ministry and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) regarding management and coordination of the crossing’s operations.
