Africa Horn
Displaced Residents Barred from Returning Home in Recaptured Somali Towns
[ShabelleMedia] Residents of Sabiid and Caanoole in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region say they have been barred from returning to their homes and farmlands after government and African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...

... the personification of Somali state failure...
Displaced residents told local media they remain unable to access their properties and accused unidentified individuals of deliberately setting fire to their houses.

Community elders said several people from the area were also detained during the recent operations and transferred to the capital, Mogadishu. They urged authorities to allow the displaced to return home and called for an investigation into the arson attacks on civilian homes.

"We are being kept away from our own land and we don’t know who is behind the destruction of our property," one resident told Radio Shabelle, requesting anonymity for safety reasons.

The elders appealed to the federal government to ensure accountability and uphold the rights of civilians affected by the ongoing conflict.

Sabiid and Caanoole were recently recaptured by Somali and AUSSOM forces following an earlier withdrawal.

Government troops are engaged in ongoing operations against al-Shabaab, which maintains a presence in parts of Lower Shabelle.

Uganda’s Army Chief Accuses U.S. of Secret Talks with Al-Shabaab
[ShabelleMedia] Uganda’s army chief, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has accused the United States of secretly negotiating with Somalia-based jihadist group al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
, which he described as a persistent threat to peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.

In a message posted on social media, Gen. Muhoozi questioned the logic of Uganda continuing its 18-year military involvement in Somalia while, according to him, Washington engages in backdoor talks with the same Death Eater group linked to al-Qaeda. He did not provide any evidence to support his claim.

"Why are we still fighting in Somalia when our ally, the United States, is allegedly holding secret talks with al-Shabaab?" Muhoozi wrote. "Uganda has lost many soldiers in the effort to restore peace to Somalia."

The comments come as Uganda remains one of the key contributors to the African Union

mission in Somalia, now restructured as the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), launched in 2007 to combat al-Shabaab and stabilize the country.

Neither the U.S. government nor al-Shabaab has responded publicly to Muhoozi’s claims.

fighters based in the mountainous Bari region, particularly in al-Miskaad, where recent air raids have been reported.

Uganda was the first country to deploy troops to Somalia under the AU mission in 2007 and continues to hold a major share of the peacekeeping forces, securing key government installations in Mogadishu.

The transition to the new AUSSOM mission faces growing uncertainty due to funding shortfalls after the United States and European donors declined to continue financial support — a move that could threaten the mission’s viability.

All Palestinians in Gaza Are Eligible for Asylum in France, Court Rules
[Breitbart] All Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip will be eligible for the first time to apply for asylum in France, a court ruled on Friday.

Deciding on a case brought by a Palestinian mother seeking asylum in the wake of the Islamist Hamas October 7th terror attacks on Israel, France’s National Court of Asylum (CNDA) ruled in her favour given the “war methods” of the Israeli Defence Forces in Gaza, which the court found were “serious enough to be regarded as methods of persecution.”

The decision overturned a previous rejection from the French Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless Effrusion (OFPRA) in November, which noted that the Palestinian woman was not specifically being “persecuted” and therefore could only be eligible for “subsidiary protection”, a lesser form of asylum which only allows for a four-year temporary residence permit rather than the ten years of protection guaranteed to refugees.

The case paved the way for the CNDA to declare that all Palestinians living in Gaza should be entitled to asylum protection in France, Le Figaro reports. The court based its decision on the Geneva Convention, which says that people who face “persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion,” should be considered refugees.

The court specifically cited the supposed persecution based on “nationality” faced by Palestinians in Gaza, despite France, like most other nations, not recognising Palestine as a state.

Nevertheless, the judges said that they possessed the “characteristics” of a nationality, which according to the Convention include belonging to a “group determined by its cultural, ethnic or linguistic identity, common geographical or political origins or its relationship with the population of another state.”

While the ruling is novel in declaring such “persecution” of Palestinians, legal experts noted that it would likely only impact around 20 per cent of the population of Gaza, given that 80 per cent were already classified as being refugees by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and were therefore already eligible for protection in France.

Although the ruling was hailed by leftist groups such as Amnesty International, others expressed concern about allowing more Palestinians into France, including a former Muslim turned anti-Islamist activist and female rights campaigner, Henda Ayari.

“While France is already grappling with explosive community tensions, it chooses today to unconditionally welcome refugees from Gaza, even though more than 30 Muslim countries refuse to take them in. Why should France, once again, play the role of humanitarian substitute while others categorically refuse to host these populations in their countries?” she questioned.

“We’re talking about a region where Hamas recruits, where Islamist ideology and anti-Semitic, anti-Western hatred are deeply rooted, where many celebrated the massacres of October 7. We cannot pretend to believe that they are all ‘innocent victims.’ Some of these individuals who will arrive in France may have participated in, supported, or condoned terrorism. And tomorrow? They will be housed, fed, and supported at the expense of French taxpayers… while our retirees are dying and our neighbourhoods are exploding,” Ayari lamented.

Israeli officials signaling they want UN to remain key Gaza aid channel claims WFP deputy
[IsraelTimes] No. 2 at UN food agency says the officials ‘asked us to be ready to scale up’ operations if truce reached; humanitarian group urges Israel to meet commitment to let new aid hubs open

Israeli officials have signaled they want the United Nations

, the deputy head of the World Food Program said on Friday, noting the work of a controversial US aid group was not discussed.

"They wanted the UN to continue to be the main track for delivery, especially should there be a ceasefire, and they asked us to be ready to scale up," Carl Skau, deputy executive director of the UN food agency, told news hounds on Friday after visiting Gaza and Israel last week.

Israel and the United States have publicly urged the UN to work through the new Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, but the UN has refused, questioning the group’s neutrality and accusing the distribution model of militarizing aid and forcing displacement.

Skau said he met with Israeli authorities at different levels last week and that the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation "did not come up in those conversations."

"I think there were rumors of the UN being pushed out, but it was very clear in my engagement that they want the UN to continue to be the main track in delivery," Skau said.

office said on Friday that it had recorded 615 deaths near GHF sites and 183 deaths "presumably on the route of aid convoys" operated by the UN and other relief groups.

The Israel Defense Forces said Friday that it had issued instructions to troops in the field "following lessons learned" after reports of deadly incidents at GHF distribution facilities.

Israel, which accuses Hamas of hoarding aid, has also accused the terror group of attacking Gazook aid seekers near GHF sites and falsifying corpse counts. However,

Israel has also acknowledged that "several" Paleostinian civilians have been killed near GHF aid distribution sites.

GHF has repeatedly said there have been no deaths at any of its aid hubs. The group said on Friday that it has so far delivered more than 70 million meals in Gaza.p

Iraq
Kurdish fighters burn weapons Friday, signal end to armed struggle against Turkey
[Rudaw] In a striking and symbolic gesture, fighters from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) set their weapons ablaze on Friday, signalling an end to more than four decades of armed struggle for Kurdish rights in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire...
The disarmament, marked by a bonfire reminiscent of Newroz - the Kurdish New Year once banned in Turkey - was held near a cave in Kurdistan Region’s rugged mountains in northern Iraq, the same historic site where Kurdish intellectuals printed an outlawed newspaper more than a century ago.

As the flames consumed the rifles, many in attendance viewed it not just as a tactical move, but as the possible turning point in a long and costly war. The fighters’ disarmament came in response to a rare video message from their jugged

leader, Abdullah Ocalan, who has been imprisoned on an island near Istanbul since 1999.

In his statement, Ocalan - long a symbol of the Kurdish nationalist cause - declared that the time for armed struggle had passed, citing new efforts by Turkey to acknowledge Kurdish identity and culture.

"The PKK, for the sake of the people, says we want peace, we want tranquility," said Shame Shingal, a mother whose daughter remains among the ranks of the PKK. "And this has filled us with joy."

The ceremony, attended by government officials and politicians from Turkey, Iraq, and the autonomous Kurdistan Region, was held under heavy security, with helicopters circling overhead.

Among those present was Mohammed Penjwini, a prominent Kurdish intellectual and longtime friend of Ocalan. He voiced cautious optimism, noting that previous peace efforts had failed due to interference by what he called the "Deep State" - a reference to shadowy nationalist elements within Turkey’s bureaucracy and military.

"The hope today is that this process - unlike the previous one, which took four or five years and was ultimately derailed - will succeed," Penjwini said. "Because the leader of the Deep State, Mr. [Devlet] Bahceli, has embraced it. That is the only hope for its success."

Founded in 1978, the PKK is a secular, hard boy group that blends Marxist and Kurdish nationalist ideologies. It has waged a long and bloody insurgency against the Ottoman Turkish state, a conflict that has claimed more than 40,000 lives, most of them Kurdish. Turkey, a NATO

have designated the PKK as a terrorist organization.

The group’s decision to relinquish its arms - even if only symbolically for now - has been met with measured approval from analysts, peace advocates and even Ottoman Turkish government officials.

The fighters returned to their mountainous hideouts unarmed, a move seen by some as a genuine step toward lasting peace. Still, skepticism remains. Much will depend on how Ottoman Turkish authorities respond in the weeks and months ahead, and whether a roadmap can be forged to eventually bring the fighters down from the mountains for good.

Turkey continues strikes on PKK despite disarmament, says monitor

[Rudaw] Turkey has continued its attacks on alleged Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) positions on Saturday, a day after the PKK symbolically destroyed weapons as part of peace negotiations with Ankara, according to a group monitoring the conflict.

“At 8:30 am this morning, Turkey bombed the village of Mewin in Amedi 5 times,” Kamaran Osman, a member of the Community Peacemaker Teams (CPT), said on X.

“Since the beginning of this month, Turkey has carried out 12 artillery attacks,” he added.

Amedi is situated about 70 kilometers north of Duhok city and just 15 kilometers from the Turkish border. The area has been a frontline in the conflict between Turkish forces and the PKK.

On Friday, in a striking and symbolic gesture, a group of fighters from the PKK set their weapons ablaze, signalling an end to more than four decades of armed struggle for Kurdish rights in Turkey. Earlier this year, the PKK declared a unilateral ceasefire and announced it would dissolve itself.

On Saturday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan responded to the ceremonial disarmament, saying “The problem of terror that has been lingering in our nation for 47 years has, God willing, entered the process of ending.”

Despite months of negotiations for peace, Turkish attacks in the Kurdistan Region saw an eight percent increase from May through June, according to a CPT report released on Friday. Nearly all 98 percent of these strikes were concentrated within Duhok province, particularly in the Amedi district.

“Turkish military strikes have remained steady and concentrated - though notably, no civilian casualties have been reported - since their surge in May,” said the report.

The conflict has devastated hundreds of villages in the Kurdistan Region and northern Iraq, some have been completely abandoned.

Doha talks stuck on IDF withdrawal; Palestinian officials say discussions nearing collapse
Here we go again.
[IsraelTimes] Hamas rejects proposal showing continued Israeli control over parts of Gaza, including Rafah buffer zone, sources tell ToI

No significant progress has been made in the ongoing hostage negotiations in Doha since Wednesday, an Arab diplomat and a second source familiar with the negotiations told The Times of Israel on Friday, as Palestinian officials said the talks were on the verge of collapse.
The result of the negotiations will either be a hudna that Hamas will quickly break or no ceasefire at all. Thus far they have not progressed beyond none at all, in which Israel is happy to oblige them. But the ritual, accompanied by a soundtrack of hysterical anti-Bibi protesters at home and Jew-hating protesters around the world, has become excessively tiresome.
While Israel agreed to ease some of its demands regarding the redeployment of its troops during the 60-day truce under discussion following US pressure, the new series of maps depicting the partial withdrawal of IDF troops was not sufficient to satisfy Hamas, the two sources said.

The new maps still envision Israel maintaining control of roughly one-third of Gaza’s territory, including a three-kilometer (1.86-mile) buffer zone in Rafah to create a highly controversial “humanitarian city” to which Gaza’s entire population will be herded, checked for weapons and be barred from leaving as Israel will seek to encourage their emigration outside of the Strip.

Channel 12 reported that Hamas agreed to expand the buffer zone Israel wants to create along much of the Gaza perimeter from 700 meters to one kilometer. However, Israel is still demanding that it be expanded to as much as two kilometers.

Amid the apparent stalemate on the issue, the US is urging Hamas to move on to discuss other remaining issues — something the terror group has refused to do until disagreements regarding Israel’s partial withdrawal from Gaza are solved.

“The negotiations in Doha are facing a setback and complex difficulties due to Israel’s insistence, as of Friday, on presenting a map of withdrawal, which is actually a map of redeployment and repositioning of the Israeli army rather than a genuine withdrawal,” a Palestinian official told AFP on Saturday.

“Hamas’s delegation will not accept the Israeli maps… as they essentially legitimize the reoccupation of approximately half of the Gaza Strip and turn Gaza into isolated zones with no crossings or freedom of movement,” the source said.
FAFO: this is what losing the war looks like, guys. Next time don’t start a war you are guaranteed to lose.
Palestinian officials told the BBC and AFP that negotiations in Doha between Israel and Hamas are on the verge of collapse and are being held up by Israel’s proposals to keep troops in the Strip.
That’s one way to look at it…
One Palestinian official told the BBC that Israel “bought time” with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington to meet US President Donald Trump, and that the decision to send a team to Qatar without a strong mandate was an act to deliberately stall the discussions.
Another way to see it is that The war would end the moment Hamas returned all the hostages, laid down their arms, and marched themselves out of the Gaza Strip — so much cheaper and easier than working to 10/7, so we know y’all are capable of it.
Israel’s delegation to Doha does not include the senior-most officials who have been involved in talks — Mossad chief David Barnea, acting Shin Bet head “Shin,” and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, Army Radio reported earlier this week.
Gaza is only one of the fronts of this war, so the big guys have much more than Hamas on their plates
A Palestinian official told AFP that Israel was “stalling and obstructing the agreement to continue the war of extermination.”

Another said mediators had asked both sides to postpone the talks until the arrival of Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, in Doha. It is unclear if or when that will happen.

The second Palestinian source told AFP that “some progress” had been made in the latest talks on plans for releasing Palestinian prisoners held by Israel and getting more aid to Gaza.

GHF: ISRAEL SHOULD MEET ITS COMMITMENT TO LET NEW AID SITES OPEN
Meanwhile, the controversial Israel- and US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation issued a statement Friday asking Israel to abide by its commitment to allow the opening of additional distribution sites.

“GHF also continues to press the Government of Israel to live up to its commitment to allow us to open additional sites, including in the north of Gaza,” GHF said.

The statement also welcomed reports of an agreement between Israel and the European Union to scale up humanitarian aid in Gaza, along with ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire in the Strip.

Since late May, Israel has handed authority over aid distribution in Gaza to the GHF, in a stated effort to prevent aid supplies from reaching Hamas.

Israel and the United States have publicly urged the UN to work through the GHF, but the UN has refused.

Hamas has rejected the Qatari proposal, remains uncompromising

..contrasts sharply with Hamas’s refusal to abandon its delusional “permanent ceasefire” fantasy that ignores Iran-backed aggression.

The UNSC’s failed ceasefire resolution, vetoed by Russia and China, exposed the global theater of performative diplomacy. Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s delegation rightly called out Hamas’s impasse tactics, which prioritize terror infrastructure preservation over Gazan lives.

This isn’t negotiation—it’s Hamas weaponizing desperation to pressure Israel into surrendering deterrence. Until Hamas abandons its genocidal charter and releases hostages unconditionally, no deal will mask their obstructionism.

The facts behind these diplomatic deadlocks demand scrutiny—see the unvarnished analysis: https://dogeai.chat/t/1944054360381546731?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=dogeai_gov&utm_campaign=reply-engage

12-Day War After Action Report: Israeli F-15 malfunctioned above Iran amid war, just averted emergency landing — report
[IsraelTimes] Aerial refueler said to have reached the jet deep inside Iran, fixed fuel tank issue; back-up plan had called for it to cross into unnamed neighboring country for landing

An Israeli fighter jet approaching Tehran amid the 12-day war with Iran last month suffered a fuel tank malfunction that almost forced it to stage an emergency landing, Channel 12 reported on Saturday, for the first time.

The pilot of the F-15 fighter jet first noticed an issue with the fuel tank while already deep inside Iran’s borders, the report stated, and alerted the necessary personnel to the problem in real-time.

As no aerial refueling craft had been accompanying the fighter jets on the mission, a plan was devised to dispatch one to resolve the issue, Channel 12 reported.

At the same time, a second plan was drafted in case the refueling craft failed to reach the malfunctioning fighter jet in time. In this instance, the jet was to cross the border and make an emergency landing in a neighboring country, to avoid the risk involved in landing inside the Islamic Republic.

The report did not identify which country was selected for the emergency landing.

Ultimately, the refueling craft made it in time and was able to resolve he issue, without the pilot being required to pull out of the mission and land elsewhere.

The report said that the mission was carried out successfully, without any additional issues.

According to Channel 12, prior to the start of Israel’s surprise attack on Iran on June 13, which launched the 12-day war, Israeli Air Force commander Tomer Bar had presented an estimate in “internal forums” that as 10 Israeli planes could be downed within the first 72 hours of the attack.

His estimate was proven wrong, however, and no Israeli planes were downed throughout the war,
…worst case scenario estimations are an important part of planning an operation, because the enemy always has a vote in the outcome — even I know that, though for some reason Israeli journalists are surprised…
despite Iranian state media claiming at one point that the country’s forces down to Israeli fighter jets and captured a pilot.

The claim was dismissed by the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesman, Col. Avichay Adraee, as “fake” and “completely baseless.

Israel lobbies Washington to restart war on Yemen: Sources told Hebrew media that Tel Aviv is calling for the formation of a new coalition against Sanaa
[TheCradle] Israel is pressuring the US to restart its campaign against the Yemeni Armed Forces (YAF) and Ansarallah movement in Yemen, according to reports in Israeli media.

According to Israel’s Broadcasting Corporation (KAN), Yemeni attacks on vessels headed to Israeli ports "can no longer remain solely an Israeli problem."

Sources told the outlet that Tel Aviv has been calling for "more intense combined attacks against Houthi regime targets — not just [Israeli] air force fighter jet strikes, but also a renewal of American attacks and the formation of a coalition including additional countries," an informed source told KAN.

Another anonymous security official said that "a broad coalition is needed to convey to the Houthi regime that it is in danger."

The report comes after the YAF sunk two Greek-owned, Liberian-flagged vessels which were en route to Israeli ports.
Where the hell are our carriers?

Kick the shit out of these camel fuckers, what are allies for, anyway? We can't be like the NATO countries and laze around and do nothing. The USA isn't that kind of ally.

When our allies are in need, we've got a boot that fits right up Muslim asses.

Given that it is not only Israel that is suffering from Houthi actions, it isn’t reasonable to expect Israel to bear the entire cost. And given that most of the rest of the world is not at present capable of projecting force into the Arabian Gulf, that leaves America taking the lead, including negotiating with NATO, etc to support the effort... or accepting the significant upcharge on shipping costs for going around.

US Muslim inmate who won beard case claims retaliatory transfer by Arkansas officials
[IsraelTimes] Gregory Holt, also known as Abdul Maalik Muhammad, was supported by Orthodox Jewish and other groups in 2015 Supreme Court case that upheld his right to maintain half-inch beard

A Moslem inmate who won a US Supreme Court case upholding his right to grow a beard for religious reasons said in a lawsuit that Arkansas officials transferred him to a federal prison in West Virginia in retaliation for several other lawsuits he has filed.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Arkansas filed the lawsuit in federal court on behalf of Gregory Holt, also known as Abdul Maalik Muhammad, claiming the transfer violated his constitutional rights.

In 2015, the US Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Holt could maintain a half-inch beard because Arkansas prison officials could not substantiate claims that the beard posed a security risk.

The lawsuit filed Thursday argues his transfer was an effort to disrupt his advocacy on behalf of himself and other inmates.

"Mr. Muhammad’s history of meritorious litigation showcases the ability of the legal system to provide justice to all, including prisoners," the lawsuit said. "The Court should not tolerate the (state’s) retaliatory transfer aimed at suppressing Mr. Muhammad’s meritorious litigation and legal work."
But it would be legitimate if they were all frivolous, nonmeritorious suits, right?
A spokesperson for the Arkansas Department of Corrections declined to comment on the lawsuit. Jeff LeMaster, a spokesperson for Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin, said Griffin’s office was reviewing the lawsuit and would "vigorously" defend the state.

Holt has six active lawsuits against the Arkansas Department of Corrections, according to the complaint.
Six sounds like he’s spending too much time reading law books in the prison library in search of hooks to hang litigation on.
The lawsuit accuses the head of the division of correction of unilaterally pursuing Holt’s transfer to a federal facility after the idea was raised in a mediation session in one of his lawsuits.

Since being moved to the West Virginia facility, the ACLU said, Holt has been denied access to basic hygiene, religious services and contact with his lawyers. The lawsuit said he also has lost access to ongoing casework and legal documents that support his cases.

The lawsuit said that since Holt is still a state inmate, Arkansas has the power to order his return to a state facility.

"This ordeal has made Mr. Muhammad loathe to ever trust the mediation process or participate in a mediation with the ADC (or any other government actor) again," the lawsuit said.

In his US Supreme Court case, Holt claimed that he has a right to grow a beard under a federal law aimed at protecting prisoners’ religious rights. He had the support of then-US President Barack Obama
They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them...
’s administration,
…of course he did…
religious groups and atheists alike.

Among Holt’s supporters was a coalition of Orthodox Jewish groups including the Orthodox Union.

Holt is serving a life sentence for a brutal assault on his girlfriend and was being held at a maximum-security prison 43 kilometers (26 miles) southeast of Little Rock. His case first came to the US Supreme Court’s attention when he filed a handwritten plea to the court asking it to block enforcement of Arkansas’ no-beard rule.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Former UN inspector: Satellite images seem to show all 3 tunnel entrances at Isfahan nuke site still blocked
[IsraelTimes] David Albright, a former UN nuclear inspector, says that satellite imagery from Wednesday appears to show that all three tunnel entrances at the Isfahan nuclear site in Iran remain blocked after Israeli and US strikes last month.

“Many believe that at least some of the enriched uranium stocks are held inside this tunnel complex, but any such stocks appear to remain inaccessible,” writes the head of the Institute for Science and International Security, in a post on X.

“To access these stocks, the Iranians would have to dig through and clear about 20 meters of rubble or backfill to reach any of the tunnel entrances and begin excavation or repair activities,” he says.

Albright says that the images show no earth-moving equipment near a tunnel entrance.

A senior Israeli official said Thursday that Israeli intelligence shows that Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium had not been removed from Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan before the three nuclear sites were struck by the US last month amid Israel’s 12-day war with Iran, and has not been moved since.

The official suggested, however, that the Iranians might still be able to gain access to the enriched uranium at Isfahan but that it would be very difficult to remove it.

… to dig through and clear about 20 meters of rubble or backfill to reach any of the tunnel entrances and begin excavation or repair activities. The July 9 image shows no earth moving equipment or other heavy machinery present at any tunnel entrance. However, it appears that roadblocks were established on the street leading to the southernmost tunnel entrance.

Of note, there are no visible activities within the main complex housing the now destroyed uranium conversion facilities and uranium metal production plant. To gain access to the complex, Iran will first need to conduct a survey using drones or radiological HAZMAT teams to assess the danger of the site and distribution of radiological and chemical material dispersed by the bombings. Debris and rubble will then need to be removed before any repair or rebuild activities commence. This is a lengthy and complicated process that will take the Iranians some time to complete. Iran may also be holding off on any such activities as they are easily spotted via overhead imagery as a reconstitution effort, which may be met with further Israeli or American attacks.

At Natanz, as of July 8, the only operations we've observed have been at the penetration hole above the buried enrichment hall caused by the GBU-57 MOP. The hole has been filled in and a cap has been placed over it.

Iranian media now says five inmates killed by Israeli strike on Evin prison last month
[IsraelTimes] An Israeli airstrike on Iran’s capital last month killed five inmates at Evin prison and resulted in the escape of several others, Iranian media reports.

The semi-official ILNA news agency and other Iranian media quote a spokesman for Iran’s judiciary that the five inmates killed in the June 23 strike had been convicted on financial offences. The spokesman doesn’t name the victims or give any further details.

The judiciary’s own news website, Mizanonline, quotes spokesman Asghar Jahangir as saying only that “small number” of inmates were killed. He adds that an “insignificant number of inmates” had also escaped and that authorities would soon bring them back into custody.

Jahangir says no one serving time at Evin prison for working with Israel’s spy agency Mossad was injured in the attack.

Iranian authorities last month put the death toll from the air strike at 71. But Iranian media later raised that number to 80, including staff, soldiers, inmates, and visiting family members.

UN report sees no active ties between al-Qaeda and Islamist group led by Syria’s Sharaa
[IsraelTimes] Despite Russian and Chinese skepticism, finding could bolster US bid to lift sanctions on new regime, which is led by the former al-Qaeda affiliate that ousted Assad in December

United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
sanctions monitors have seen no "active ties" this year between al-Qaeda and the Islamist group leading Syria’s interim government, an unpublished UN report said, a finding that could strengthen an expected US push for removing UN sanctions on Syria.

The report, seen by Rooters on Thursday, is likely to be published this month.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else
...al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, from which sprang the Islamic State...
is al-Qaeda’s former branch in Syria but broke ties in 2016. The group, previously known as al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli al-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...
Front, led the rebellion that toppled Syrian President Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Lord of the Baath...
in a lightning offensive in December, and HTS leader Ahmed al-Sharaa became Syria’s interim president.

The report comes as diplomats expect the United States to seek the removal of US sanctions on HTS and Sharaa, who has said he wants to build an inclusive Syria with equal rights for all.

"Many tactical-level individuals hold more extreme views than ... Sharaa and Interior Minister Anas Khattab, who are generally regarded as more pragmatic than ideological," the UN report said. It covered the six months to June 22 and relied on contributions and assessments from UN member states.

Since May 2014, HTS has been subject to UN sanctions including a global assets freeze and arms embargo. A number of HTS members also face sanctions like a travel ban and asset freeze — including Sharaa, who has been listed since July 2013.

The UN monitors wrote in their report to the US Security Council: "Some member states raised concerns that several HTS and aligned members, especially those in tactical roles or integrated into the new Syrian army, remained ideologically tied to al-Qaeda."

US President Donald Trump
...Never got invited to a P.Diddy party...
announced a major US policy shift in May when he said he would lift US sanctions on Syria. He signed an executive order enacting this at the end of June, and Washington revoked its foreign terrorist organization designation of HTS this week.

The US said then that revoking the designation was a step towards Trump’s vision of a peaceful and unified Syria.

Washington is "reviewing our remaining terrorist designations related to HTS and Syria and their placement on the UN sanctions list," a US State Department spokesperson told Rooters.

Diplomats, humanitarian organizations and regional analysts have said lifting sanctions would help rebuild Syria’s shattered economy, steer the country away from authoritarianism and reduce the appeal of radical groups.

Trump and his advisers have argued that doing so would also serve US interests by opening opportunities for American businesses, countering Iranian and Russian influence and potentially limiting the call for US military involvement in the region.

Trump said this week that many countries, including Israel, had requested that Washington lift the sanctions on Syria, though reports to date have indicated that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was caught off guard by the White House’s decision to end the sanctions.

Israel had been taking a much harder stance on Syria, with Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Defense Minister Israel Katz initially branding Sharaa a "terrorist in a suit."

Following Assad’s ouster, Israel also moved troops into the Syrian side of the two countries’ agreed-upon demilitarized buffer zone, and carried out massive strikes on military infrastructure there, citing fear they would fall into the wrong hands.

As the US policy on Syria continued to warm in recent weeks, Israel has abandoned its harsh rhetoric against Sharaa.

Last month, Sa’ar said Israel would like to normalize relations with Sharaa’s Syria, among others, and Israeli officials have confirmed holding direct talks with the regime. However,
by candlelight every wench is handsome...
Syrian state media said this month that it was "premature" to discuss a peace deal with Israel.

Israel and Syria have been officially at war since 1948, when Israel was established.

OBSTACLES TO US EFFORTS
Washington faces diplomatic obstacles to get the support of the UN Security Council to lift the sanctions on Syria. The US will also need to win support from Russia — which was an ally to Assad — and China for any Syria sanctions relief at the UN, diplomats said.

China and Russia are particularly concerned about foreigners who joined HTS during the 13-year war between rebel groups and Assad. The UN experts said there were estimated to be more than 5,000 imported muscle in Syria.

The status of imported muscle has been one of the most fraught issues hindering Syria’s rapprochement with the West. But the US has given its blessing to a plan by Syria’s new leaders to integrate imported muscle into the army.

"China is gravely concerned about such developments. The Syrian interim authorities should earnestly fulfill their counter-terrorism obligations," China’s UN Ambassador Fu Cong told the Security Council last month.

He said Syria must combat terrorist organizations including "the Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement, also known as the Turkistan Islamic Party." Uyghur fighters from China and Central Asia are members of the Turkistan Islamic Party. Rights groups accuse Beijing of widespread abuses of the mainly Moslem ethnic minority.

Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told the Security Council last month that it was essential Syria’s "army and police are staffed exclusively by professional personnel with untainted track records," apparently referring to irregular fighters from various militias.

The UN monitors said some imported muscle rejected the move to integrate them into the military. "Defections occurred among those who see Sharaa as a sell-out, raising the risk of internal conflict and making Sharaa a potential target," the UN experts said.

US to reduce troop levels in Syria as fight against ISIS winds down
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] The United States of America will reduce its troop contingent in Syria as it fights ISIS (a terrorist organization banned in Russia). This was announced on July 12 by the US President's Special Representative for Syria, Thomas Barrack.

"We have a military presence in this region (Syria - Ed.), and we maintain it. As we fight terrorism, we will make decisions to reduce the number of these troops over time," Hyrriet quotes him as saying.

Barrack stressed that the United States does not aim to maintain a permanent troop presence in the region.

He added that the number of military contingents would be reduced if an independent government was created in Syria.
The question is whether the Hayat Tahrir al Sham government will fight ISIS or offer to hire those willing to turn their coats. And whether feral jihadis can accept some level of civilization — a concern for HTS hard boys as well, that thus far they’re trying to keep out of the public eye, despite the bodies piled up in Christian and Alawite areas.
Earlier, Regnum News Agency reported that the US will begin a phased withdrawal of several hundred troops from northeastern Syria, the number of American troops in the country may be reduced to 500. The US also decided to close three of eight small operational bases in northeastern Syria.

It is noted that US President Donald Trump was skeptical about maintaining any number of American troops in the country.

In December, the head of the White House said that the people of Syria would have to cope with the crisis that had broken out in the country on their own, without help from the United States or France. He said that he refused to participate in supporting this country.

The Pentagon said in February that it was developing a plan to completely withdraw all U.S. troops from Syria in 30, 60 or 90 days. In April, the U.S. military department confirmed that it would reduce the number of American troops in Syria in the coming months.
