We are proceeding much faster than anticipated in moving to our new permanent home.
This post outlines what has happened to the changeover and what to expect.
There have been changes.
1) The new rantburg.com will reside on a single quadcore Xeon CPU and RAID electronics, instead of the previously specified dual quadcore processor. The new server still has 32 gigs of RAM.
In the early going with the hosting provider, I had a devil of a time getting their RAID rig to work. My previous experience in setting up FreeBSD on a RAID rig in the past have been singularly negative. After three complete self-installations which failed, and me begging the hardware guys to move to a bare metal server, the hardware people decided to let me have what I needed.
Don't get me wrong. I love those guys. They are polite, knowledgeable, with years of professional experience behind them -- everything I'm not.
So, rantburg.com will be on a one terabyte SD drive bare metal server, instead of the virtual rig. This will make rantburg.com much more stable.
2) Thinking seriously about moving the changeover up by one, possibly two weeks. Setting up the new server was at times hard, moving from php 8.0 to php 8.3, and overhauling the apache php interpreter to an entirely new interpreter but it appears it is ready.
When I do decide it is time, I will post a post with the title "The changeover is tonight." At midnight, the database is backed up for the final time, and moved to the new server. Any activity on ranturg.com after that time will be gone forever.
At the same time, there will be an inevitable delay as the rantburg.com name is propagated throughout the domain name system. rantburg.com will be for some unavailable for a brief period of time. But newrantburg.1dogstar.net is now and always will be available.

[Regnum] The Taliban movement ruling Afghanistan (under UN sanctions for terrorist activities) has begun closing beauty salons and women's hairdressers in Kabul. This was reported on August 10 by the Telegram channel Tolo News. Of course they are, further isolating women and removing them from the public sphere — raising the heat under the pot until the frog is completely boiled.
"The Taliban in Kabul have closed hundreds of women's hair salons. According to witnesses, the Taliban are searching homes, finding hair salons and destroying or confiscating their equipment," the article, published on August 9, says.
According to the publication, this is being done to advance the Taliban's course of ousting women from the social and economic spheres. Before the ban, 60,000 women worked in the beauty industry.
In July, Afghanistan International reported that Taliban police had carried out raids in Kabul, detaining dozens of women allegedly because of their inappropriate appearance. Police detained them in restaurants, shopping malls and on the streets, then took them away to an unknown location.
In December 2024, ABC News reported that Afghan authorities had banned non-governmental organizations from hiring women, threatening to suspend their activities if they failed to comply.

The suffering continues in the Gaza Strip, as the Ministry of Health confirmed that many victims are still under the rubble and in the streets and that ambulance and civil defense crews are unable to reach them.
Amid the worsening humanitarian situation, hospitals recorded five deaths, including two children, due to famine and malnutrition in the past 24 hours. This brings the total number of deaths due to famine to 217, including 100 children.
According to the report, the corpse count and injuries since March 18, 2025, when the Israeli occupation violated the truce, has reached 9,921 deaders and 41,172 injured.

It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates. Home of nutbag holy manYusuf al-Qaradawi... i broadcaster Al Jazeera, Anas al-Sharif, whom the Israel Defense Forces has long argued was a Hamas ..always the voice of sweet reason... terrorist in charge of rocket launching.
Al Jazeera confirmed the 28-year-old’s death along with fellow journalist Mohammed Qreiqeh and videographers Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa in the strike, which it said targeted a tent near Shifa Hospital. An official at the hospital said two other people were also killed in the strike.
The incident came days after Israel approved a plan to fully conquer Gaza City and relocate southward around 1 million Paleostinians currently staying there.
Following Gazook media reports about Sharif’s death, the IDF confirmed carrying out a strike that killed him, saying he was a "terrorist operating under the guise of a journalist."
"The terrorist Anas al-Sharif served as a cell leader in the Hamas terror organization and advanced plans for rocket fire against Israeli civilians and IDF forces," the military said in a statement.
The IDF noted that in October, it published documents seized in Gaza that it said "unequivocally" confirmed Sharif’s "military affiliation with Hamas."
At the time, the military said Sharif headed a rocket-launching squad and was a member of an elite Nukhba Force company in Hamas’s East Jabalia Battalion.
"These documents serve as proof of the terrorist’s integration into the Qatari Al Jazeera media network," the IDF said.
Al Jazeera has fiercely denied No, no! Certainly not! Israel’s allegations and accused it of systematically targeting Al Jazeera employees in the Gaza Strip.
In Sunday’s strike, the military said it took steps to mitigate civilian harm, including "the use of precision munitions, aerial surveillance and additional intelligence information."
Minutes before being killed, Sharif documented Israeli Arclight airstrike ...KABOOM!... s in Gaza City and posted footage to social media.
"Relentless bombing... For two hours, the Israeli aggression on Gaza City has intensified," he wrote on X.
And shortly after his death, his X account, which has more than 500,000 followers, published a message he had left to be posted in the event of his death that read, "...I never hesitated to convey the truth as it is, without distortion or misrepresentation, hoping that God would witness those who remained silent."
A press freedom group and a UN expert previously warned that Al Sharif’s life was in danger due to his reporting from Gaza. UN Special Rapporteur Irene Khan claimed last month that Israel’s allegations against him were unsubstantiated.
In a statement, the Committee to Protect Journalists, which in July urged the international community to protect Al Sharif, said Israel had failed to provide any evidence to back up its allegations against him.
"Israel’s pattern of labeling journalists as Death Eaters without providing credible evidence raises serious questions about its intent and respect for press freedom," said Sara Qudah, CPJ’s director for the Middle East and North Africa.
Calling Al Sharif "one of Gaza’s bravest journalists," Al Jazeera said the attack "is a desperate attempt to silence voices in anticipation of the occupation of Gaza."
"Anas Al Sharif and his colleagues were among the last remaining voices in Gaza conveying the tragic reality to the world," Al Jazeera said.
Paleostinian terror group Hamas, which runs Gaza, said the killing may signal the start of an Israeli offensive. "The liquidation of journalists and the intimidation of those who remain paves the way for a major crime that the occupation is planning to commit in Gaza City," said Hamas, which itself regularly faces accusations of persecuting adversarial journalists.
The Paleostinian Journalists’ Syndicate condemned what it described as a "bloody crime" of liquidation.
Pro-Israel advocates hailed the killing of Sharif and posted photos he took with since-slain Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, as well as a screenshot of a Telegram message he posted on October 7, 2023, hailing the murders and kidnappings during the mass Hamas onslaught that day.
The Hamas-run Gaza government media office said 237 journalists have been killed since the war started. The Committee to Protect Journalists said at least 186 journalists have been killed in the Gaza conflict.
And how many of them are also the Hamas payroll?

[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] Activists on social media posted a video showing a horrific execution carried out against a medical worker inside al-Suweida’s National Hospital.
Was he Druze?
The footage shows members of the Ministries of Defense and Interior dragging the young man and then physically assaulting him before shooting him directly.
The video also shows dozens of individuals wearing hospital work uniforms kneeling during the execution, reflecting a state of tension and terror that prevailed in the site. Following the execution, the victim’s body was dragged away to an unknown place.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, this incident is only one example of the violations committed against civilians in al-Suwaida, where SOHR has documented the execution of 401 individuals.
It pointed to an earlier incident on the 7th of this month, in which a man, his son, and his wife were executed, while women from the same family were kidnapped and later freed under public pressure.
If I recall correctly, they were Druze.
SOHR called for the formation of an independent committee including representatives from all concerned parties to follow up the issue of the missing people, disclose their fate and ensure accountability for those involved in these serious violations.
