RSF accused of killing 18 in two-day assault on Al Jazirah area
[SUDANTRIBUNE] A group affiliated with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) carried out a second day of deadly attacks in the area of Takina, Kamleen locality, Al Jazirah state, killing at least 18 people and injuring many more.

Residents of the central Sudan
...a Moslem country located in the Horn of Africa. It is noted for its affinity for rule by ex- or current generals, its holy men, and for the oppression of the native Afro population by its Arab conquerors. South Sudan, populated mostly by the natives, split off from Sudan proper, which left North and South Darfur to be oppressed by the guys with turbans...
state regularly report widespread violations including killings, arrests, forced displacement, and looting. Further, the RSF, which has controlled the state since December 2023, has been accused of terrorizing local communities and exploiting communication blackouts to their advantage.

Musab Takina, a resident of Takina, recounted the events to Sudan Tribune, stating that the violence began on Monday when RSF forces arrived searching for fuel. Unable to find any, they opened fire on civilians, killing 11.

The following day, the RSF returned with reinforcements, using heavy weaponry against residential areas and killing an additional seven people.

Musab denies the RSF’s claims that locals were armed with military-grade weapons, stating that any firearms used were personal and for self-defence.

As a result of the violence, over 30,000 residents have been forced to flee.

In a released audio recording, RSF commander in Al Jazirah state, Abu Aqla Keikel, claimed he was responding to reports of troublemakers but was met with heavy fire.

However,
there is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened...
the RSF has consistently denied responsibility for the violence, blaming unidentified troublemakers, Islamist brigades, and security agencies for committing crimes in their name.

Mali court jails professor for criticizing government
[AFRICANEWS] A court in Mali has sentenced economist Etienne Fakaba Sissoko to two years in prison, with one year suspended, for criticizing the military junta in his book.

Sissoko’s lawyer, Ibrahim Marhouf Sacko, announced the verdict and plans to appeal.

Sissoko, a professor at the University of Bamako, faced charges of harming the state's reputation, defamation, and spreading misinformation for his 2023 book on government communication during Mali's transition.

THE BOOK
According to reports, the book critically examines the military government’s use of what it terms propaganda, manipulation and even lies to influence public opinion, particularly during the promised "transition" period leading back to civilian rule.

The junta missed their initial deadline of March 2024 for a return to democracy, with no new date set.

Subsequently, at the May 6 hearing, Sissoko defended his work stating his use of factual evidence and expert analysis.

THROWBACK
This isn’t his first run-in with the authorities. In 2022, Sissoko, formerly an advisor to the ousted president, spent months in jail for criticizing the government’s stance on Christmas celebrations and questioning the validity of his academic credentials.

However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
Sissoko’s lawyer suggests the real trigger for his recent imprisonment was his public commentary on the economic impact of sanctions imposed on Mali by neighbouring West African nations.

BACKGROUND
Mali has been grappling with political and security instability since 2012, facing attacks from krazed killers, gangs, and a separatist movement in the north.

Last Friday, the Houthis claimed downing an American drone over the province of Marib, hours after footage circulated online of what appeared to be the wreckage of an MQ-9 Reaper.

Houthi military front man Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree said Tuesday the latest drone was shot down with a locally made surface-to-air missile. He did not say when it occurred but alleged the drone "was carrying out hostile missions" over Yemen’s southern province of Bayda.

Responding to an News Agency that Dare Not be Named inquiry, the US military’s Central Command acknowledged reports about the downing but declined to comment.

Reapers cost around $30 million apiece. They can fly at altitudes up to 50,000 feet (15,000 meters) and have an endurance of up to 24 hours before needing to land.

The Houthis in recent months have stepped up attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, demanding that Israel end the war in Gaza, which was sparked by Hamas’s October 7 onslaught.

The Houthis have launched more than 50 attacks on shipping, seized one vessel and sunk another since November, according to the US Maritime Administration.

Shipping through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden has declined because of the threat.

The rebels claimed last week that they fired a missile toward a US Navy destroyer in the Red Sea. However,

French police arrest protesters who allegedly assaulted security at Jewish event
[IsraelTimes] No one is hurt in incident at aliyah fair in Lyon, which saw a similar disruption in December

Police in Lyon, La Belle France arrested several people who assaulted security personnel guarding an event organized by the Jewish Agency for Israel, the organization said.

The incident Tuesday evening ended without serious injury, the La Belle France office of the Jewish Agency wrote in a statement.

The altercation followed a pro-Paleostinian demonstration that took place earlier Tuesday near the Perrache train and bus station in the second district at the center of the eastern city.

Several hours after that demonstration ended, the Jewish Agency for Israel held an aliyah fair — an event to encourage immigration by Jews to Israel — at a venue in the same district.

About 90 minutes into that event, several pro-Paleostinian activists arrived and began assaulting the security guards, leading police to intervene, the French-language statement said.

"At no point did the assailants enter the venue and none of the participants was in any danger," the statement said. No protesters were present on the street when the fair ended and participants left the venue "in total safety," the statement said.

More than 3,000 people have attended a series of aliyah fairs in Gay Paree, Marseille and Lyon this week, Sofer said. The Jewish Agency expects some 3,200 new immigrants colonists, or olim, to move to Israel this year, more than three times last year’s tally, Jewish Agency representative Shay Felver said Monday at a Knesset committee discussion about aliyah.

Ariel Kandel, the head of the Qualita nonprofit for encouraging aliyah from La Belle France, told The Times of Israel that a similar incident happened in Lyon during an aliyah fair in December. "Unfortunately, this is the current reality in La Belle France," he said.

In 2023, La Belle France registered the highest increase in recorded antisemitic incidents of any country with reliable statistics, according to a report published earlier this month by Tel Aviv University and the Anti-Defamation League. The report showed a near-quadrupling of incidents in La Belle France, from 436 in 2022 to 1,676 last year.

On May 17, a synagogue was torched in Rouen, La Belle France, in what police suspect was an antisemitic hate crime.

The 2023 tally showed that 74 percent of the incidents happened after October 7, when invading Hamas

Police break up University of Michigan encampment; New School to hold divestment vote
[israelTimes] Camp was threat to safety with overloaded power sources, open flames, says school president; Drexel University campus on lockdown as officials threaten to clear encampment

US police broke up a pro-Paleostinian, anti-Israel encampment Tuesday at the University of Michigan, less than a week after demonstrators showed up at the home of a school official and placed fake body bags on her lawn.

Officers wearing helmets with face shields moved in before sunrise to clear the Diag, known for decades as a site for campus protests. Video footage posted online showed police at times using what appeared to be an irritant to spray people, who were forced to retreat.

The encampment had been set up in late April near the end of the school year and as families arrived for spring commencement. Posters taunting president Santa Ono and other officials were also displayed.

After the camp was cleared, nearby buildings, including the undergraduate and graduate libraries, were closed, and police turned away students who showed up to study.

Ono said in a statement that the encampment had become a threat to safety, with overloaded power sources and open flames. Organizers, he added, had refused to comply with requests to make changes following an inspection by a fire marshal.

"The disregard for safety directives was only the latest in a series of troubling events centered on an encampment that has always violated the rules that govern the Diag — especially the rules that ensure the space is available to everyone," Ono said.

Protesters have demanded that the school’s endowment stop investing in companies with ties to Israel. But the university insists it has no direct investments and less than $15 million placed with funds that might include companies in Israel. That’s less than 0.1 percent of the total endowment.

"There’s nothing to talk about. That issue is settled," Sarah Hubbard, chair of the Board of Regents, said last week.

A group of 30 protesters showed up at her house before dawn last week and placed stuffed, red-stained sheets on her lawn to resemble body bags. They banged a drum and rolled their eyes, jumped up and down, and hollered poorly rhymed slogans real loud over a bullhorn. People wearing face coverings also posted demands at the doors of other board members.

"This conduct is where our failure to address antisemitism leads literally — literally — to the front door of my home," board member Mark Bernstein, a bankrupt, increasingly impoverished, reliably Democrat, Detroit

-area lawyer, said at a board meeting last week. "Who’s next? When and where will this end? As a Jew, I know the answer to these questions because our experience is full of tragedies that we are at grave risk of repeating. Enough is enough."

Students and others have set up tent encampments on campuses around the country to press colleges to cut financial ties with Israel.

Tensions over the war have been high on campuses since the fall, but demonstrations spread quickly following an April 18 police crackdown on an encampment at Columbia University. Arrests at campuses have surpassed the 3,000 mark nationwide.

solidarity encampment being dismantled. According to a statement from the school, an investment board will hold a vote on June 14 to end any investments in certain companies in line with calls made by anti-Israel student protesters and a slew of faculty members who launched their own demonstrations following a police crackdown.

"They call for complete divestment from industries implicated in military and police violence in Gaza and the West Bank, and all global militarized conflict such as companies or subsidiaries involved in weapons manufacturing, military supplies and equipment, military communication, and public surveillance technology," the statement read.

The agreement also gave amnesty to those involved in protests.

The statement coincided with one by the school announcing that Joel Towers will take over as school president. Towers previously headed the Parsons School of Design, whose faculty has been involved in the anti-Israel protests.

"We will continue to strengthen our commitment to academic excellence and freedom, and foster openness and mutual respect," he said in a statement.

Also Monday, Drexel University in Philadelphia threatened to clear an encampment with the campus on lockdown and classes being held virtually as police kept watch over the demonstration. Many Drexel employees were told to work from home. President John Fry said late Monday that the encampment had disrupted campus life and "cannot be allowed to remain in place."

"This demonstration already has proved intolerably disruptive to normal University operations and has raised serious concerns about the conduct of some participants, including distressing reports and images of protesters subjecting passersby to antisemitic speech, signs and chants," Fry said, declaring that "this encampment must end."

The walkout began as Yale president Peter Salovey started to announce the traditional college-by-college presentation of candidates for degrees on the grounds of Yale’s Old Campus, filled with thousands of graduates in their caps and gowns.

At least 150 students seated near the front of the audience stood up together, turned their backs to the stage and paraded out of the ceremony through Phelps Gate, retracing their steps during the processional into the yard. Many of the protesters carried small banners with such slogans as "Books not bombs" and "Divest from war." Some wore red-colored latex gloves symbolizing bloodied hands.

Other signs read: "Drop the charges" and "Protect free speech," in reference to 45 people arrested in a police crackdown last month on demonstrations in and around the New Haven, Connecticut, campus.

Wesleyan University in Connecticut said it had reached an agreement with student protesters to review possible divestment, with meetings scheduled for later this month and in the fall. Wesleyan president Michael Roth announced the deal over the weekend and disclosed that 1.7% of Wesleyan’s endowment was invested in aerospace and defense businesses, but that none were directly involved in the manufacture of weapons. As part of the agreement, Wesleyan protesters cleared their encampment on Monday, according to a school spokesperson.

’s (PTI) spokesperson Raoof Hasan in Islamabad on Tuesday, drawing strong condemnation from his party.

"Extremely shameful and deplorable," PTI said in a statement on X, formerly Twitter, adding: "Central Information Secretary Raoof Hasan attacked by unknown persons outside the office of a private channel."

It is, however, unclear why did the persons attack the politician.

In the video shared along with the statement, Hasan could be heard asking people to call the doctor, with injuries and blood seen on his face as he walked into a building.

PTI, in another statement, said if the spokesperson of the "largest party" can be attacked in the federal capital in broad daylight, then "what can we make of the safety of others".

According to the CCTV footage of the incident obtained by Geo News, Hasan can be seen being attacked by a group of apparent transgender persons, who used a sharp object as well.

The footage shows Hasan was interrupted by an apparent transgender person while he was walking on the side of a road, subsequently, the attacker engaged in conversation with the PTI leader for a few seconds.

After a brief conversation, the PTI chief spokesperson tried to take a few steps back, seemingly sensing danger.

However,
Switzerland makes more than cheese...
the attacker grabbed the PTI leader from his collar and along with three other apparently transgender persons began thrashing him. The attackers were only dispersed after the intervention of a passerby.

The footage also shows a person filming the entire incident. It is not clear whether the attackers were really transgender persons or they were guised as transgender persons.

Later, while talking on Geo News' programme Capital Talk, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar condemned the attack and called for a detailed investigation into the incident.

(IS) group Lions of Islam killed three Syrian regime soldiers in an attack Tuesday on an army position in the Badia desert, a war monitor said.

The Lions of Islam "attacked a site where... regime forces were stationed," the Syrian Observatory for Human Right said, adding that a lieutenant colonel and two soldiers died.

The Syrian army had sent forces to the area, where IS attacks are common, ahead of an expected wider sweep, said the Britannia-based Observatory which has a network of sources inside the country.

In an attack on May 3, IS fighters killed at least 15 Syrian pro-regime fighters when they targeted three military positions in the desert, the Observatory had reported.

IS overran large swathes of Syria and Iraq in 2014, proclaiming a so-called caliphate and launching a reign of terror.
