U.S. sanctions RSF commanders over civilian deaths in Darfur
[SUDANTRIBUNE] The U.S. Department of the Treasury Wednesday imposed sanctions on two commanders of Sudan
...a Moslem country located in the Horn of Africa. It is noted for its affinity for rule by ex- or current generals, its holy men, and for the oppression of the native Afro population by its Arab conquerors. South Sudan, populated mostly by the natives, split off from Sudan proper, which left North and South Darfur to be oppressed by the guys with turbans...
’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for their role in a recent military campaign in North Darfur that has caused civilian casualties and threatened a fragile grinding of the peace processor.

The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated Ali Yagoub Gibril, the RSF Central Darfur commander, and Osman Mohammed Hamid Mohammed, the group’s head of operations. The sanctions freeze any assets they hold within U.S. jurisdiction and prohibit American citizens and companies from doing business with them.

"The RSF’s attacks in North Darfur have endangered nearly one million civilians and impeded access to humanitarian aid," said Under Secretary of the Treasury Brian Nelson. "These sanctions target individuals who are undermining peace efforts and further perpetuating the conflict in Sudan."

The U.S. administration had previously sanctioned the RSF itself and its deputy commander in 2023 for human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
abuses. Today’s action highlights the ongoing concerns about the paramilitary group’s activities in Darfur.

Escalating violence and humanitarian concerns

The RSF’s offensive in North Darfur began last month and included the encirclement of the region’s capital, El Fasher. This escalation in violence has displaced thousands of civilians and increased fears of mass atrocities.

The Treasury Department emphasizes Gibril and Mohammed’s critical roles in the RSF’s operations. Gibril commands troops surrounding El Fasher, the last major government-held city in Darfur, and Mohammed, as head of operations, plays a key role in planning RSF actions.

The United States is committed to supporting a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Sudan. These sanctions aim to pressure the RSF leadership to stop their offensive in Darfur and encourage a return to dialogue.

Army, RSF clash for 4th day over El Fasher control
[SUDANTRIBUNE] A deadly battle for control of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, has entered its fourth day, raising fears of a full-blown war. The festivities between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and a combined force of the Sudan
...a Moslem country located in the Horn of Africa. It is noted for its affinity for rule by ex- or current generals, its holy men, and for the oppression of the native Afro population by its Arab conquerors. South Sudan, populated mostly by the natives, split off from Sudan proper, which left North and South Darfur to be oppressed by the guys with turbans...
ese army and allied armed movements have resulted in a growing number of civilian casualties.

The RSF launched a large-scale offensive, deploying thousands of fighters from across Darfur in an attempt to capture El Fasher. The Sudanese army and its allies responded by reinforcing their presence within the city.

Eyewitnesses reported to "Sudan Tribune" that the RSF bombarded densely populated areas in the south and west of the city with artillery fire, causing significant civilian casualties and widespread destruction of homes.

Conflicting Narratives:

A military official from the joint forces claimed they repelled a "treacherous attack" by the RSF, inflicting heavy losses on them and capturing several military vehicles. He further alleged that the RSF used foreign mercenaries in the assault.

In contrast, an RSF spokesperson countered that their forces successfully defended their positions from an attack by "mercenary movements and coup forces." They claimed capturing military vehicles and inflicting significant casualties on their attackers. They also accused the army of war crimes for shelling civilian areas.

General mobilization announced:

Minni Minawi, head of the Sudan Liberation Movement and Governor of Darfur, reacted by announcing a general mobilization to defend El Fasher and its citizens. He accused the RSF of mobilizing fighters and mercenaries to plunder the city and urged residents to protect their lives and property.

Minawi further condemned the RSF’s actions, including shelling civilian areas and blocking aid deliveries, calling them "criminal" acts.

The situation in El Fasher remains highly volatile, with both sides offering conflicting narratives. The heavy fighting and disregard for civilian life raise serious concerns about a potential escalation into a wider conflict.

Mosque attack in Nigeria's north injures at least 24 people, including children
[AFRICANEWS] At least 24 worshippers, including four children, were maimed in northern Nigeria's Kano state after a man attacked the mosque where they were praying early Wednesday morning, resulting in a kaboom, the police said.

The suspect, a 38-year-old resident of the area, confessed that he attacked the mosque in Kano's remote Gadan village "purely in hostility following prolonged (a) family disagreement," police front man Abdullahi Haruna said in a statement.
If there are no appropriate targets, the Sudden Jihadist will take it out on the nearest possiblr target, no matter how inappropriate.
The incident caused panic in Kano, northern Nigeria's largest state, where periodic religious-related unrest has occurred over the years, sometimes resulting in violence.

Haruna said preliminary forensic analysis suggested a gasoline explosion, but a full investigation was still ongoing.

The police have also cordoned off the scene while the injured were rushed to a hospital in the state capital.

The Daily Trust newspaper reported that the worshippers were locked inside the mosque, making it difficult to escape the earth-shattering kaboom. It said the suspect had attacked people in the area in the past over the same family dispute.

"The disagreement (was) over sharing of inheritance of which those that he alleged to have cheated on him were in the mosque at that moment and he did that for his voice to be heard," the police statement said.

Houthis claim missile attack on US destroyer in Red Sea
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] The military representative of the Yemeni Houthis, Yahya Saria, said that the rebel movement launched a missile attack on a US destroyer in the Red Sea, on the Al Masirah TV channel.

“The Yemeni navy conducted a combat operation during which it fired several anti-ship missiles at the US destroyer Mason in the Red Sea,” Saria said.
Note that he says nothing about actually hitting the target.
He added that the Houthis also launched a missile attack on the commercial ship Destiny in the Red Sea. It was heading to the port of Eilat in Israel.

As Regnum reported, on May 8, the head of the Houthi Supreme Political Council, Mahdi al-Mashat, said at a military parade that the United States was sending “tempting offers” so that the movement would stop attacking merchant ships in the Red Sea. He called these steps by the American leadership humiliating. Al-Mashat said the Houthis will continue their attacks in support of the Gaza Strip, whose residents are suffering from attacks by the Israeli army.

Saria on May 9 announced missile strikes on three Israeli ships in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.

IDF tanks kill 5, injure 7 in Gaza friendly fire accident
[Jpost] On Wednesday, a friendly fire incident occurred in Jabalya, involving two IDF tanks firing on a forward IDF battalion headquarters, resulting in casualties.

Two IDF tanks killed five IDF soldiers and injured seven more in a friendly fire incident on Wednesday when they fired on a forward IDF battalion headquarters in Jabalya in northern Gaza. The IDF cleared for publication on Thursday.

The tanks were said to be under extreme pressure from dozens of rocket-propelled grenade attacks in the area.

All openings to the tanks, including the canopy on the top, were ordered to be kept closed to avoid any hole or vulnerability to the RPG attacks.

This, in turn, limited the tank's visibility.

IDF TANK INCIDENT
Tank Unit 202 is a Haredi-integrated unit, and the soldiers said that they saw a potential threat emerge from the battalion headquarters, which was only 10-20 meters away from them.

It was unclear why they did not recognize the battalion headquarters. However, the IDF said that the tanks had taken over the junction in Jabalya around 9:00 am and that the Battalion headquarters deputy commander had only arrived many hours later.

The incident itself took place in the early evening on Wednesday.

NAMES OF THE FIVE SOLDIERS KILLED
The IDF released on Thursday the names of the five soldiers who were killed in the friendly fire attack in the northern Gaza Strip on Wednesday:

Sergeant Roy Beit Yaakov, 22, from Eli, was a combat officer in Battalion 202, Paratroopers Brigade.

Sergeant Daniel Chemu, 20, from Tiberias, was a soldier in Battalion 202, Paratroopers Brigade.

Sergeant Ilan Cohen, 20, from Karmiel, was a soldier in Battalion 202, Paratroopers Brigade.

Staff Sergeant Gilad Arye Boim, 22, from Karnei Shomron, was a soldier in Battalion 202, Paratroopers Brigade.

Staff Sergeant Betzlel David Shashuah, 21, from Tel Aviv, was a soldier in Battalion 202, Paratroopers Brigade.

, both sides said on Wednesday.

Israeli tanks reached densely populated neighborhoods and narrow alleyways of the bad boy stronghold of Jabalia in the northeast, facing heavy resistance. Residents said the army destroyed clusters of homes there in areas where they had not invaded before.

Gaza's Civil Emergency Service and health ministry said rescue teams have been unable to reach areas where the army was operating to respond to calls for help.

once the United States opens a temporary pier, US officials said Wednesday, as they also pushed for the reopening of a key land crossing.

In a briefing with news hounds, US officials involved in the pier project, in which humanitarian aid will be screened and loaded in Cyprus before being offloaded into Gaza, repeated that it would become operational "in the coming days."

"Today we have hundreds of tons of aid ready for delivery and thousands of tons of aid in the pipeline," said Vice Admiral Brad Cooper, deputy commander of US Central Command which operates in the Middle East.

Cooper also warned that the United States would not tolerate attacks on the pier, saying it took the security of service members and humanitarian workers "very seriously".

"This is a 100 per cent humanitarian mission and any attack on those working on it — on this mission — is an attack on aid for the people of Gaza," he said.
Yeah! That'll stop Hamas from killing our servicemen!

Hezbollah says struck Israel after field commander's killing
Yes, yes — but were they effective strikes? I think not.
[GEO.TV] Leb
...an Iranian satrapy currently ruled by Hassan Nasrallah situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozen flavors of Christians, plus Armenians, Georgians, and who knows what else? It is the home of the original Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
's Iran-backed Hezbollah group said it launched dozens of rockets at north Israel military positions Wednesday in retaliation for the killing of a member Israel said was a field commander.

Hezbollah fighters on Wednesday attacked "the Meron base with dozens of Katyusha rockets, heavy rockets and artillery shells" as well as targeting a barrack with "heavy rockets," the group said.

The attacks were "part of the response to the liquidation carried out by the Israeli enemy in the south" the previous day, it said.

Israel’s army said sirens sounded in Meron on Wednesday without providing further details.
