Afghanistan
Opium Poppy Farming Ongoing in Nangarhar District
[ToloNews] Many residents of the Shirzad district in the eastern province of Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
are busy growing opium poppy in the Gandamak area, where it was planted months earlier.

Farmers who grow and harvest the opium poppy in the district receive 500 Afs (About $6.40) per day.

"We don’t have money--there is neither work nor school, therefore we came here with our children for work," said Abdul Haq, a laborer in Shirzad district.

The Taliban
...Arabic for students...
had full control over most areas in Shirzad district, said district residents and farmers, adding the Taliban had cultivated the opium poppy while they controlled the district.

The Taliban pressure the landowners in the district to pay them a tax for the cultivation of poppy on their lands, officials said.

"We have to do this--the schools are also shut down due to the war," said Zubair, a young farmer in the district.

"We carry on our daily life with this work, " said Khan, another farmer in the Shirzad district.

The district was recaptured by Afghan cops from the Taliban recently, and opium poppy is being cultivated and smuggled in the district, said Zia ul Haq
...the creepy-looking former dictator of Pakistain. Zia was an Islamic nutball who imposed his nutballery on the rest of the country with the enthusiastic assistance of the nation's religious parties, which are populated by other nutballs. He was appointed Chief of Army Staff in 1976 by Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, whom he hanged when he seized power. His time in office was a period of repression, with hundreds of thousands of political rivals, minorities, and journalists executed or tortured, including senior general officers convicted in coup-d'état plots, who would normally be above the law. As part of his alliance with the religious parties, his government helped run the war against the Soviets in Afghanistan, providing safe havens, American equipiment, Saudi money, and Pak handlers to selected mujaheddin. Zia died along with several of his top generals and admirals and the then United States Ambassador to Pakistain Arnold Lewis Raphel when he was assassinated in a suspicious air crash near Bahawalpur in 1988...
Amarkhel, Nangarhar's governor, who added that soon the cultivation and trafficking will be halted in the district.

"The Taliban are behind all the smuggling, abductions, destruction, and poppy cultivation," he added.

Enamullah Saapai, head of Nangarhar's agriculture office, said there are plans to create dozens of hectares of crops in Hesarak, Khogyani and Shirzad districts this year and, they will contribute seeds for the farmers to grow alternative crops.

In addition to the cultivation of opium, Hashish is also being cultivated in Shirzad, Khogyani and Hesarak districts, said Nangarhar's local officials.

Baghlan police blamed the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
for the attack.

The group has not commented on the incident.

Sources said Narmgo was a well-known surgeon in the province and was involved in other cultural activities as well.

Africa Subsaharan
Boko Haram beheads woodcutters in northeast Nigeria
[AA.TR] Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
forces of Evil beheaded six woodcutters in an attack in Nigeria’s northeastern Borno state.

One of the survivors, Ali Musa, said the men rode to the bush last Thursday in search of firewood to sell but were attacked by the terrorists.

"Six people were killed. They had their heads chopped off," he told Anadolu Agency.

Some locals said they recovered four corpses on the day of the attack, but two other corpses were discovered the following day.

The incident was not reported until late Monday due to poor communication and the remoteness of the area.

Damboa, the town where the attack occurred, is around 87 kilometers (54 miles) from Maiduguri, Borno state’s capital and heartland of over a decade of Boko Haram terror.

The group has grabbed credit for most of the violent mostly peaceful attacks in the region.

Arabia
The back and forth in fighting for Marib region
[SouthFront] The fighting in Yemen, similarly to other battlefields in the Middle East is heating up in 2021.

The Ansar Allah, or the Houthis, as they are colloquially known, have began pushing towards Marib city. The province and the settlement itself are the last Saudi-led coalition stronghold in the relatively calm central region. If Marib city is captured by the Houthis, they would be allowed to carry out even more attacks and operations in Saudi Arabia’s southern regions. These regions are largely depopulated because of the war that Riyadh and its allies began almost 6 years ago.

Starting on February 17th, the Houthis targeted Saudi-led force’s positions near Marib City, as a harbinger of what is to come. That is when the offensive began, with the Ansar Allah rapidly capturing various smaller villages en route to Marib City and the historical Marib Dam. The Saudi-led coalition attempted to halt the advance, by shelling the column and the ditches that were dug to siege the surroundings of Marib. After more than a day of heavy clashes, the Houthis came out victorious, capturing the Marib Dam.

Ma'rib battle: Yemeni army close to retaking city from Saudi-led forces
[PRESSTV] Victory appears to be on the horizon in the heated battle for Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
’s strategic central province of Ma’rib as army troops, backed by allied fighters from Popular Committees, have reportedly taken control of most areas there and dislodged Saudi-led coalition forces and Riyadh-backed hard boyz from those regions.

A Yemeni military source, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
, told the Arabic service of Russia’s Sputnik news agency that Yemeni soldiers and their allies had encircled Ma’rib city, following weeks of fierce festivities with Saudi-led coalition forces and their mercenaries.

The source added that Yemeni forces had cut off the main supply route into the eastern flank of Ma’rib, which leads to the Arab country’s largest province of Hadhramaut.

India-Pakistan
Police issue security alert for NGO workers in North Waziristan
[DAILYTIMES.PK] Police of North Wazoo has issued a security alert for NGO workers after four women NGO workers were shot in the region’s Miranshah
... headquarters of al-Qaeda in Pakistain and likely location of Ayman al-Zawahiri. The Haqqani network has established a ministate in centered on the town with courts, tax offices and lots of madrassas...
on Monday.

The aid workers were ambushed by two button men as they were driving through a village in North Waziristan district, according to local police chief Shafiullah Gandapur, who said just one passenger survived the assault. "No one has grabbed credit for the attack so far but it was surely an act of terrorism.

Gandapur said the aid workers were affiliated with a programme run by a local institute to develop household skills for women. The incident and corpse count was confirmed by Rasul Khan, another local police official.

Separately, Gandapur said in a statement that the driver of the vehicle was also injured in the attack. He added that a search and strike operation was being carried out in the Mirali tehsil of the district to trace and arrest the terrorists.

Soon after the incident, KP Inspector-General of Police Sanaullah Abbasi asked the North Waziristan DPO to submit a report. "Police have been ordered to arrest the suspects immediately. Those involved in the incident will be punished," the IG said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the shootout, Butch clutched at his other leg......
the Human Rights Commission of Pakistain issued a statement, condemning the attack and demanding that the perpetrators be brought to book.

The tribal areas along the Afghan border remain notorious for the availability of cheap guns, narcotics and smuggled goods. Attacks have decreased in recent years following a series of military offensives against homegrown and foreign bad boys.

In 2014, the army launched a massive operation to wipe out bad boy bases in North Waziristan aimed at ending a near decade-long insurgency that cost thousands of lives. But bad boy groups are still able to carry out sporadic, isolated assaults. A recent surge in attacks targeting security forces along the Afghan border has sparked fears that these groups may be regrouping.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israeli, 17, indicted for stun grenade attack on Palestinians, vandalism
[IsraelTimes] Indictment, which includes weapons and explosives charges, comes after undercover investigation netted 4 other suspects in West Bank assault.

Prosecutors filed an indictment o Tuesday against a 17-year-old Israeli settler who is accused of throwing stun grenades into Paleostinian homes in the West Bank, as well as causing damage to their property.

The filing of the charges at the Central District Youth Court in Ramle made public an undercover investigation into an attack that occurred on January 4.

The unnamed defendant was indicted on charges of conspiracy to commit a crime for racist motives, aggravated battery, carrying a weapon, attempted destruction of property using explosives, deliberate damage to a vehicle as well as other crimes, the Israel Police said in a statement.

The defendant was arrested last week along with four other suspects in connection with the attack in the Paleostinian village of Sarta in the northern West Bank.

He has been under house arrest since, while the other suspects are still under investigation, police said.

The incident is related to another case involving nationalist terror that is still being probed, Channel 13 reported.

According to the indictment, the defendant and seven others — three of whom have yet to be identified — drove to Sarta in two vehicles in the middle of the night and entered the village on foot, armed with stun grenades, large stones, and a sharp instrument.

The defendant threw a stun grenade into two homes as families slept inside, police said. Together with the others involved, the defendant also allegedly hurled stones at four homes and vehicles, causing damage.

As a result of the attack one Paleostinian man, 61, was injured in the forehead from broken glass, while his daughter, 17, suffered a serious anxiety attack, dizziness, and confusion. The man and the teen were both taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

Village residents alerted Paleostinian police to the attack and they, in turn, contacted Israeli authorities.

Attorneys for the defendant from the Honenu legal aid group said in a statement that there was only one piece of forensic evidence against him.

"We believe that this will not be enough for his arrest and certainly not for the conviction of the minor," the attorneys said, adding that they would seek his release.

In the wake of the incident, the Yesh Din rights group said in early January it had received reports of 50 incidents in which settlers attacked Paleostinians and their property, or blocked key junctions in the West Bank.

The group said at the time it had sent a letter to Public Security Minister Amir Ohana and the heads of the Israel Police and IDF in the West Bank demanding they bring an end to settler attacks on Paleostinians, which, at the time, they said were happening on an almost nightly basis.

Last week masked vandals smashed windows and punctured tires of cars belonging to Paleostinian workers near the West Bank settlement of Shiloh.

Footage of the suspected hate crime was caught on a security camera, capturing the moment the group — believed to be young turban settlers, known as "hilltop youth" — damaged at least nine Paleostinian cars by the entrance of the settlement.

Settler violence directed toward Paleostinians has spiked in recent months following the death of 16-year-old Ahuvia Sandak. The car in which Sandak was riding crashed during a police chase, after he and several others allegedly hurled stones at Paleostinians.

According to Yesh Din, there were nearly 50 settler attacks targeting Paleostinians in that period, including several that left young children injured.
