Magnetic storm that lasted on Earth for more than 30 hours has ended
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] The magnetic storm that lasted on Earth for more than 30 hours has ended. This was reported on Sunday, August 10, by the press service of the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

"The past magnetic storm lasted more than 30 hours and reached a peak of G2.0, which was the strongest value since a similar event on June 13-14 this year. The storm level coincided with the forecast," the laboratory's Telegram channel said.

According to scientists, strong disturbances of the Earth's magnetosphere are not expected in the next few days, and after that the situation will depend on the activity of solar flares, which is currently at a high level.

Earlier, on August 8, the solar astronomy laboratory of the IKI RAS reported that geomagnetic disturbances had begun on Earth from the so-called coronal hole - an area on the Sun in which the flow of solar wind is weakened. Scientists then noted that because of this, the planet's magnetosphere would "shake" at a yellow level, with periodic bursts to red.

The day before, the IKI RAS warned that the Earth is expecting the strongest magnetic storm in the last two months on August 8. According to scientists, a major flare of level M4.4 occurred on the Sun on August 5, causing a plasma emission, the impact of which turned out to be stronger than expected.

An explosive plasma outburst has engulfed several active regions of the Sun

An explosive plasma ejection on the Sun covered several active regions in the western hemisphere of the star closest to Earth. This was reported on August 10 by the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in its Telegram channel.

"The Sun experienced a complex and very fast (explosive) plasma ejection, which affected several active regions in the western hemisphere of the star. In total, the event covered an area with a diameter of about half a million kilometers (a third of the visible solar disk). The plasma was ejected exactly in the plane of the planets," the laboratory's report specifies.

Experts indicated that the main center of the explosion (area 4168) was located at a significant angular distance from the direction to Earth, but some of the secondary centers involved in the event were located at a dangerously close distance from the Sun-Earth line. Direct measurements showed that in the near-solar space, parts of the substance and magnetic fields can move toward Earth.

Outrage as baby dies after genital mutilation in The Gambia
[BBC] The death of a one-month-old baby girl who was the victim of female genital mutilation (FGM) in The Gambia
... The Gambia is actually surrounded by The Senegal on all sides but its west coast. It has a population of about 1.7 million. The difference between the two is that in colonial days Senegal was ruled by La Belle France and The Gambia (so-called because there's only one of it, unlike Guinea, of which there are the Republic of Guinea, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, New Guinea, the English coin in circulation between 1663 and 1813, and Guyana, which sounds like it should be another one) was ruled by Britain...
has sparked widespread outrage.

The baby was rushed to a hospital in the capital, Banjul, after she developed severe bleeding, but was pronounced dead on arrival, police said.

Although an autopsy is still being conducted to establish the cause of her death, many people have linked it to FGM, or female circumcision, a cultural practice outlawed in the West African state.

"Culture is no excuse, tradition is no shield, this is violence, pure and simple," a leading non-governmental organization, Women In Leadership and Liberation (WILL), said in a statement.

Two women had been arrested for their alleged involvement in the baby's death, police said.

The MP for the Kombo North District where the incident happened emphasised the need to protect children from harmful practices that rob them of their health, dignity, and life.

"The loss of this innocent child must not be forgotten. Let it mark a turning-point and a moment for our nation to renew its unwavering commitment to protecting every child's right to life, safety, and dignity," Abdoulie Ceesay said.

Vigilante Tube passengers face arrest over 'assault' of naked man on the Tube after they took law into their hands when he dropped his trousers on packed carriage
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] Commuters who took the law into their own hands when a Tube passenger dropped his trousers in a packed London Underground carriage could face arrest, the Daily Mail can reveal today.

British Transport Police (BTP) believe the naked man, who has since been detained under the mental health act, was assaulted on the District line in east London. Up to four men stepped in when he repeatedly refused to pull up his pants at 3.30pm last Thursday. He was pinned to the floor and carried off the train before being arrested by an off duty police officer.

But detectives are probing whether the vigilantes committed any criminal offences in the confrontation after he refused to pull up his pants.

BTP has appealed for witnesses to the incident but there have been no arrests over the brawl.

'The man had been assaulted by a number of other passengers and was initially arrested by an off duty officer, before being detained under the mental health act and taken to hospital,' the BTP statement said.

'An investigation into the incident is ongoing.'

The Daily Mail revealed how he began yelling after the eastbound train travelled between Upton Park and East Ham. He then dropped his trousers and put his belt around his neck. His bottom and genitals were on show, sparking anger and revulsion around him on the train, which was busy with children who are on their summer holidays.

A passenger stood up and quickly confronted him, gesticulating angrily. He politely and firmly told him: 'You need to get off the train.' But the man began repeatedly yelling back: 'F*** off.'

The commuter said in response: 'What do you mean "f*** off"? You need to get off the f***ing train. Now. There are kids on here.'

Footage of the incident showed up to four men kicking and punching the naked man, who was hitting them with his belt. The video then cut to him being pinned to the floor of the carriage. The man was then unceremoniously carried on to the Tube platform at East Ham and dumped to the floor. He was then pinned down as the commuters tried to alert staff.

It appears an off duty police officer was on the train and performed an arrest and he was taken to hospital.

It is yet another horrifying incident on the Tube, which is run by Sir Sadiq Khan's Transport for London (TfL). Since he became Mayor in 2016, Tube crime rates have more than doubled, and today he has been accused of ignoring a manifesto pledge to maintain a 24-hour police front counter in every borough in the capital.

Just last month a brawl broke out on the steps of a packed station - with a screaming toddler ending up on the floor in the chaos.

On Thursday a group of men surrounded the man who exposed himself and repeatedly ordered him to 'pull your f***ing trousers up'.

A scuffle then broke out. The naked man was showing trying hit them with his belt and the group was punching and kicking him. The men snatched away his belt and pinned him to the floor of the carriage while putting his arm behind his back, still with his trousers around his ankles.

Passengers then yelled: 'We've got to get him off.' He was then removed and arrested.

Fact: What Japan's former Imperial Military did in the Sino-Japanese wars was a true evil horror.

But still, it is, but a drop in the bucket compared to what the CCP Communists have done, in the last 80 years, to the Chinese people since the CCP took control.

QUESTION:
Could the CCP be laying Propaganda groundwork, in its recent increases of anti-Japan propaganda sentiment, for a bigger deflective reason?

Given, Taiwan, is just 110 KM from Japan's outer Islands.
Send a few ships up near the Japan islands, to deflect attention while backdooring Taiwan.

#6  Some Japanese will tell you that the victims of the Nanjing Massacre were Chiang Kai-shek's troops who had shed their uniforms and wore civilian clothes in a cowardly attempt to avoid fighting.

We all know it's the winners who get to write the history books so we'll never know what all the Japanese did in Manchuria that the British hadn't done in India, or what the British hadn't done in China, or what the French hadn't done in Indochina or the Dutch in Indonesia.

But, hey, Roosevelt needed an excuse to get into WWII and the Japanese were handy.

An interesting point there. Roosevelt was backing Chiang Kia-Shek and it probably never occurred to him that Mao would eventually defeat Chiang Kai-Shek and go on to gain control of China. We can only speculate what might have happened if the Japanese had been able to bring all of their forces to bear against the communists instead of having to fight Chiang, Mao and Roosevelt all at the same time.

AI industry horrified to face largest copyright class action ever certified
[ArsTechnica] Copyright class actions could financially ruin AI industry, trade groups say.

AI industry groups are urging an appeals court to block what they say is the largest copyright class action ever certified. They've warned that a single lawsuit raised by three authors over Anthropic's AI training now threatens to "financially ruin" the entire AI industry if up to 7 million claimants end up joining the litigation and forcing a settlement.

Last week, Anthropic petitioned to appeal the class certification, urging the court to weigh questions that the district court judge, William Alsup, seemingly did not. Alsup allegedly failed to conduct a "rigorous analysis" of the potential class and instead based his judgment on his "50 years" of experience, Anthropic said.

If the appeals court denies the petition, Anthropic argued, the emerging company may be doomed. As Anthropic argued, it now "faces hundreds of billions of dollars in potential damages liability at trial in four months" based on a class certification rushed at "warp speed" that involves "up to seven million potential claimants, whose works span a century of publishing history," each possibly triggering a $150,000 fine.

Confronted with such extreme potential damages, Anthropic may lose its rights to raise valid defenses of its AI training, deciding it would be more prudent to settle, the company argued. And that could set an alarming precedent, considering all the other lawsuits generative AI (GenAI) companies face over training on copyrighted materials, Anthropic argued.

#4  Has there been any creator of copyrightable works in the last millennia who was not trained, formally or informally using other copyrightable works?

By this logic any creator would have to prove that he had never been exposed to any work that is even only remotely related to his own work in a rough analogue to clean room design of reverse engineered software.

E.g. James Cameron would have to pay creators of copyrighted non fiction reports and documentaries on the Titanic disaster unless he could prove that no one involved in the film's development had ever been exposed to such works.

#8  #4, Elmert, I think we went through something like this when Apple/Steve Jobs sued Microsoft/Bill Gates over Microsoft's graphical user interface (GUI) claiming that Apple developed the GUI first. IIRC the final ruling was that Microsoft could legally develop a GUI with a similar look and feel as Apple's as long as they did not copy Apple's source code. Fact is, Jobs got the idea for a GUI from Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). It seems the suits at Xerox did not understand or appreciate what had been developed at PARC and let it wither on the vine.

AI might be able to summarize information from other sources. But it would be wise and considerate if AI doesn't copy those other sources word for word, image file for image file and audio file for audio file without even crediting and providing links to the sources.

I'm sure there's more to this story than what I've read here but it sounds like AI is arguing it is "too big to fail" and therefor exempt from copyright laws.

Hundreds of National Guard troops to flood Washington DC as Trump posts images of homeless from motorcade: 'We want our Capital BACK'
The first job of a politician is to make sure the voters are safe from criminals and invading armies, that potholes are filled and drinking water is clean. President Trump gets it.
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] Donald Trump is weighing the deployment of as many as 1,000 National Guard troops to flood the streets of Washington DC as the president threatens a federal takeover of the capital as part of a response to violent crime.

An announcement could come as soon as Monday according to one defense official and two US officials familiar with the plan.

The potential mobilization which is still under discussion and has not yet signed into order would likely draw most of the personnel from the D.C. National Guard, although final numbers remain fluid, officials said on Sunday night.

The White House declined to confirm details but signaled Trump is prepared to act.

'We won't get ahead of the President on any potential announcements,' one official told NBC News, 'but the President has been clear that all options are on the table when it comes to making D.C. safe again.'

Trump has been suggesting he would introduce a crackdown in the city for days, using his Truth Social platform to promise a major announcement on Monday about his anti-crime plan for the capital.

'It has become one of the most dangerous cities anywhere in the World,' Trump wrote on Sunday. 'It will soon be one of the safest!!!'

The president has likened his plans for D.C. as similar to his administration's aggressive crackdown against illegal immigration at the southern border.
