Gun ownership as a mental health disease
[BearingArms] Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-Texas), is proposing legislation which would create an Orwellian database of gun owners.

Perhaps most frightening are the requirements for the psych eval.

"(2) PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION.—A psychological evaluation is conducted in accordance with this paragraph if—

"(A) the evaluation is conducted in compliance with such standards as shall be established by the Attorney General;

"(B) the evaluation is conducted by a licensed psychologist approved by the Attorney General;

"(C) as deemed necessary by the licensed psychologist involved, the evaluation included a psychological evaluation of other members of the household in which the individual resides; and

"(D) as part of the psychological evaluation, the licensed psychologist interviewed any spouse of the individual, any former spouse of the individual, and at least 2 other persons who are a member of the family of, or an associate of, the individual to further determine the state of the mental, emotional, and relational stability of the individual in relation to firearms.

Manchin To Harris - Piss Off
Unlike Republicans, Democrats aren't easily rolled.
Some Democrats...and some Republicans. This new crop of Republican military vets is looking good thus far.
[NY Post] - Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin slammed Vice President Kamala Harris ahead of her meeting with a group of Senate Republicans Monday on passing bipartisan COVID-19 relief.

Manchin (D-WV) denounced Harris for appearing on local TV stations in West Virginia and Arizona last week in what was effectively a targeted pressure campaign on senators from those states to support the Biden administration’s $1.9 trillion relief package.

Speaking to local station WSAZ on Friday, the same outlet where Harris urged West Virginia’s lawmakers to back their coronavirus legislation, Manchin argued that the vice president’s interview went against Biden’s message of unity.

"I saw [the interview], I couldn’t believe it. No one called me. We’re going to try to find a bipartisan pathway forward, I think we need to," the self-proclaimed conservative Democrat said.

"We need to work together. That’s not a way of working together," he continued.
I'm pretty sure she's made her mind up already, Joe.

#2  Don't hold your breath, Darth. Manchin is a consummate Swamp Critter. He's only playing to his constituents until the Dems agree to his price; then he can count on the Democrat Election Manufactory (TM) to keep him in office regardless of what WVA may want. As for the (unspellable) AZ senator, she's a true flake - you wouldn't want to trust her driving your car much less saving the country. Probably trying to play the same game as Manchin but just not as experienced.

#7  If I recall when GW Bush won he had a similar 50-50 split and Cheney as tie breaker. But a squishy Republican flipped to independent and gave the Dems the majority. Maybe Manchin could declare his ‘independence’ but I suspect a squishy Republican would flip just a quick.

Democrats ready to go it alone on next round of coronavirus aid
[Washington Examiner] House and Senate lawmakers pledged to work toward a bipartisan deal on the next round of coronavirus aid, but Democrats are now preparing to ram through a measure unilaterally in a move that will all but shelve a deal Republicans could support.

"I support passing COVID relief with support from Republicans if we can get it, but the COVID relief has to pass. No ifs, ands, or buts," President Biden told reporters on Friday.

Biden’s comments mirror what Democratic leaders in the House and Senate have warned for days: They have little patience for the GOP and are planning to pave the way for passing coronavirus aid, and perhaps other legislation, with only 51 votes.

Both the House and Senate plan to take up budget resolutions as early as next week that will include language allowing the aid package to pass without requiring the usual 60-vote threshold.

The rarely used tactic, known as budget reconciliation, allows Congress to pass legislation through the Senate with a simple majority if it conforms to certain requirements and directly affects the federal budget. Democrats control 50 seats and hold the Senate majority with the tiebreaking vote of Vice President Kamala Harris.

"Our preference is to make this important work bipartisan," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, said. "But if our Republican colleagues decide to oppose this urgent and necessary legislation, we will have to move forward without them."

The threat from both Biden and Schumer threw cold water on burgeoning bipartisan talks between Republicans and Democrats and Biden administration officials.

"It’s certainly not helpful," Sen. Susan Collins, a Maine Republican who has been part of the bipartisan aid talks.

Biden has proposed a $1.9 trillion aid package that includes a provision to raise the minimum wage nationally to $15 per hour.

Republicans hope to negotiate a smaller bill that provides funding for vaccine production and distribution and perhaps a new round of stimulus checks targeted at lower-income individuals and families.

The bid to bridge the differences between Democrats and Republicans barely began before Democrats put budget reconciliation on the agenda for next week.

"That's going send a signal to America, and to Republicans throughout Congress, that this president's message of unity was rhetoric as opposed to substance," Sen. Todd Young, an Indiana Republican, said.

GOP Lawmakers in Key Battlegrounds to Tighten Vote-by-Mail Rules
[Breitbart] GOP state lawmakers in three battleground states where President Joe Biden narrowly defeated former President Donald Trump in November are looking to tighten their states’ vote-by-mail rules.

The moves come after Trump spent the lead-up to the general election by going after vote-by-mail, which was implemented in many states to stop the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Trump repeatedly claimed that vote-by-mail would lead to “fraud” and would “destroy this country.”

There was a surge in early and mail-in voting during the 2020 election, with most votes cast by Democrats.

Now, with legislative sessions in the statehouses in session, GOP lawmakers are coming up with a flurry of laws aimed at restricting vote-by-mail.

In Georgia, Republican state Sen. Jason Anavitarte introduced SB 29 this week. The bill, if implemented, would require voters to provide a form of identification when requesting and dropping off their absentee ballot.

Biden won Georgia by less than 12,000 votes out of the nearly 5 million ballots cast.

In Arizona, lawmakers introduced several bills aimed at limiting or getting rid of vote-by-mail. SB 1503, introduced by state Sen. Kelly Townsend (R-Mesa), would make voters return their ballots received in the mail in person.

Her House colleague, state Rep. John Fillmore (R-Apache Junction), called for limiting vote-by-mail to people who cannot physically get to a polling place, according to the Arizona Republic.

But one bill that had passed the Senate Government Committee along party lines would take voters off the early voting list if they do not vote-by-mail in two consecutive election cycles, the Arizona Republic reported.

Biden won Arizona by slightly over 10,000 votes.

In Pennsylvania, Republican state Sen. Doug Mastriano introduced legislation to repeal the “no-excuse” absentee voting law passed in 2019, WHP reported.

Biden won Pennsylvania by just over 80,000 votes out of nearly 7 million ballots cast.

Dems Press Pelosi to Smuggle Path to Citizenship Into COVID-19 Relief Bill
[PJMedia] Considering the fact that Democrats are abandoning all hope of getting any Republican support in the Senate for Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion pandemic relief package, there is a growing movement to throw all sorts of radical proposals into the bill, which is now almost certain to be rammed through Congress using the reconciliation process.

That means a simple majority in the Senate could mandate a $15-per-hour minimum wage, climate boondoggles, "social justice" schemes, and a host of other proposals the American people were never asked to vote on.

But the biggest outrage being proposed by Democrats is giving a pathway to citizenship for millions of illegal aliens. A hundred House Democrats led by the Hispanic Caucus signed a letter to the House leadership asking that "undocumented essential workers, Dreamers and temporary protected status recipients" be given a path to citizenship in the pandemic relief bill.

Pandemic's ‘Essential Workers’ May find Citizenship Path
Front-page news in the Sunday paper.
Deep in bathos territory, a perfect example of the type. One imagines the suffering of the journalists and editors involved from the ladles of artificial sweetener added to the vats of artificial tears.
[Dallas News] Jacoba has sliced and packed chicken fillets at a processing factory and cooked savory stews in a restaurant kitchen, keeping people fed at her two jobs.

But for the past 24 years, the Mexican illegal immigrant, who asked that her last name not be published because she lacks legal immigration status, has feared a deportation agent might pop up at any time.

Could her anxiety finally be coming to an end?

Jacoba is one of an estimated 4 million to 5 million unauthorized immigrants who are essential workers.

They are first responders and last responders. They tend to sick patients, keep food on tables, and repair vehicles so others can get to their jobs. They’ve kept the country running during a pandemic that has taken more than 420,000 lives.

Now, some key politicos want to repay immigrant essential workers for their contribution to the fight against the coronavirus. There are at least three legislative proposals in Congress aimed at legalizing unauthorized immigrants who are essential workers.

The thank-you is a stunning pivot from the often-racist abuse that illegal immigrants took under the administration of President Donald Trump. While the future of these bills is uncertain, the number of proposals has spiked optimism among immigrant groups.

After Elon Criticizes Biden's FAA, Biden's DoJ Launches Investigation Alleging SpaceX Discriminates Against Non-US Citizens
[NationalFile] Biden's Department of Justice is very concerned that Elon Musk may prefer to hire American citizens over foreign labor.

Only hours after Elon Musk derided the decision of the Biden administration FAA to delay a manned mission to Mars, the U.S. Department of Justice, under the Biden administration, announced it is investigating Musk’s SpaceX to determine whether the company discriminates against non-US citizens in its hiring practices.
Can the IRS be far behind?
Wait for the Department of Education referral...
After Biden’s FAA delayed a SpaceX test flight, Musk wrote on Twitter that "the FAA space division has a fundamentally broken regulatory structure."

"Their rules are meant for a handful of expendable launches per year from a few government facilities," Musk added. "Under those rules, humanity will never get to Mars."

Only six hours later, news broke that the Department of Justice was investigating SpaceX after a complaint alleged that Musk’s company prefers hiring American citizens over non-citizens.
