Sudan rebels free six Bulgarian aid workers: UN
[Iran Press TV] Six Bulgarian UN aid workers have been released after a week in jug of rebels in Sudan, a United Nation agency has announced.

The World Food Program (WFP) said in a Sunday statement that the aid workers, tasked with providing relief aid to the war-wearing people of Sudan and South Sudan, were handed over to South Sudan's Yida Refugee Camp on Sunday and were later flown to the country's capital Juba.

The rebels of Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), which fights against the Sudanese government, captured them after their Mi-8 helicopter had to make an emergency landing on January 26 in a remote area of Sudan's South Kordofan state, bordering South Sudan.

"It is regrettable that this incident took place. However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
we are greatly relieved that the WFP crew members are unhurt and back with us," WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin said.

Air Strike kills 'scores' of Shaboobs in Lower Shabelle
MARKA, Somalia -- Amidst sporadic ground offensives, scores of Al Shabaab militants were killed in air strikes in Lower Shabelle region of southern Somalia on Saturday afternoon according to officials, Garowe Online reports.

Lower Shabelle governor Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur (Siidi) unveiled that strikes made against several positions dealt severe blow to Islamist insurgents: "At least three missiles hit military camp, a building housing foreign Jihadists and fighting vehicle separately," said the government official on BBC Somali Service.

He further noted that 45 to 60 Al Shabaab fighters were killed in the rare aerial attack.

The air strikes carried out by the US targeted the village of Dugule, Nur disclosed. The militants in the camp are said to have been concluded a training course.
And now they've trained on how to flee an airstrike...
Al Shabaab didn't comment on the airstrike but it comes at a time when they are losing grounds against allied forces in Indian Ocean Operation.

Senior Shaboob snatched in Gedo
GARBAHAAREY, Somalia -- Somali National Army (SNA) commander in Gedo region of southwestern Somalia has announced the capture of senior Al Shabaab official, Garowe Online reports.

Speaking on Mogadishu-based radio station, Jama Muse said that the terror official is in the hands of government forces. He didn't disclose his name to media but Musse added that the man had since been responsible for the preparation of explosions.

The capture of the new Al Shabaab official comes less than a week after intelligence official with the group Zakariye Ismael gave himself in and renounced violence. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud called for more defections last week.

Jubaland forces conduct security sweep in Kismayo
KISMAYO, Somalia -- Jubaland security forces have conducted door by door security operation in the southern port city of Kismayo, arresting terror suspects, Garowe Online reports.
And they're using Frank G's F-150 to do it...
Police aided by intelligence officers pressed ahead with the search operation in various neighborhoods. Nearly 10 youths suspected of being Al Shabaab members were captured during the sweep. The search operations also saw popular spots and vehicles on the main roads.

Jubaland President Sheikh Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Madobe) voted no letup in anti terror offensives in Lower Juba, Gedo and Middle Juba.

Allied forces are preparing for new thrusts into Al Shabaab-held areas in Gedo.

Three women killed in clashes in Egypt's Sinai
[CA.REUTERS] Two women were killed by a rocket-propelled grenade while another died in crossfire between bully boyz and security forces in two separate incidents in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, security and medical sources said on Sunday.

Security sources blamed the violence on Sinai Province, Egypt's most active krazed killer network and the same group that claimed attacks on Thursday that killed at least 30 security personnel in the worst anti-government violence in months.

In Rafah, along the border with the Paleostinian Gazoo Strip, bully boyz launched a rocket-propelled grenade at a military checkpoint, but hit a house instead, killing two women, security and medical sources said.

The wayward RPG also maimed two other women and two children, the sources said.

In another incident in Rafah, a woman was killed by a stray bullet during a firefight between bully boyz and security forces, while two others were maimed, security sources said.

A man was also maimed after security forces shot at him at a checkpoint in historic provincial capital Al-Arish for violating a curfew that has been in place since the last major attacks in October, the sources said.

Egypt is facing a Sinai-based insurgency that has claimed the lives of hundreds of security forces since the army removed president Mohahmed Mursi of the Moslem Brüderbund in June 2013 following mass protests against his rule.

that involved a ground and air campaign. Gamboru-Ngala, about 145 kilometers east of Maiduguri, was captured by Boko Haram last year.

A soldier involved in the operation said Chadian forces were working under the African Union

Nigeria's Military Repels Boko Haram's Attack on Maiduguri
[VOA News] Nigeria's military says its forces have repelled the latest attempt by Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
fighters to take over the key northeastern city of Maiduguri.

Military officials say the attack on Maiduguri was contained, more than 12 hours after Boko Haram laid siege to the city from four different roads.

The officials say many forces of Evil were killed during the fighting in the capital of Borno state. Several civilians also died.

A VOA news hound, Abdulkareem Haruna, saw hundreds of civilians armed with hunting rifles, clubs and machetes advance toward the battles, saying they want to help the soldiers stop the myrmidons.

Separately, security sources say a suicide kaboom targeting a political meeting in the northeastern Nigerian town of Potiskum killed at least seven people.

These incidents come two weeks before Nigeria's February 14 general election.

Analysts have said Boko Haram will likely make another attempt to take over Maiduguri before that poll. The myrmidon group tried to capture Maiduguri a week ago, but failed.

Saudi Arabia Is Putting Aside Billions For Its Own Gas-Fracking Revolution
While at the same time, lower prices are placing the economic nail in the coffin of our domestic fracking operations. Guess I'm just a conspiracy theorist.

#4  I am told that gas prices are starting back up again. The dollar keeps losing value so its bound to go back up. 1929 dollar value was it 24-1 now its 77-1. Probably much higher than that.Print more and get even less impact. So the Fed will be no help this time. The attack on the dollar is nearly done. I guess we go Euro. Provided Angela Merkel allows that. She hates Putin. I think she would go for it just to poke him in the eye.

#9  @49pan,
That's good to hear. My understanding is that people see the $25-95/bbl production cost of shale-oil/gas-fracking (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_shale_economics) and don't always factor in whether that includes up front exploration and initial drilling (i.e. more expensive) or whether it's just the extraction cost (somewhat cheaper).

Either way, I would love to see a number that says where US 'fracking' is still profitable. And although I'm not an American, and don't go in for Government intervention, it would please me immensely to have a tariff placed on all imports into the US to give a floor price of say $80/bbl (isn't this something Sarah Palin brought up?)
Posted by: Tony || 02/02/2015 15:51 Comments || Top||

#10  The more efficient companies, when operating in the 'sweet spots' of the shale/tight sand frac plays can make money at $40 per barrel. At that price the average operator in the average location will go bankrupt. It's always been that way in the oil patch - the only thing that changes is the technology and the price.
Posted by: Glenmore || 02/02/2015 16:05 Comments || Top||

#11  Might be able to find something in Oil & Gas Journal. I don't have graphs, numbers, or statistics, so I guess [like most of the comments I make] this is too anecdotal, but oil well fracking has been going on for decades. It's a process that is likely to remain profitable.

On a side note, I enjoy seeing comments from non-U.S. Citizens, with the possible exception of g(r)om, but even he I often find interesting.
Posted by: Besoeker || 02/02/2015 16:12 Comments || Top||

#12  Fracking has indeed been around a LONG time - I'd guess 100 years. Wells would be drilled until traces of oil showed up in the cuttings bailed out of the hole, then they'd lower a few coffee cans of nitrogycerine into the well to the prospective zones and 'shoot' the well. The nitro would fracture the oil-bearing rock, and would push the heavy drilling fluid out, cutting the back pressure, and the well would 'come in', often creating the famous 'gushers.'
Today fracking is done differently, as a slow motion process with massive amounts of fluid - sand, water and chemicals - pumped into the well until the pressure exceeds the fracture strength of the rock. Pumping then continues to enlarge and lengthen the fracture, exposing thousands of feet of rock to bleed oil into the well. A little oil seeps in at any given place, but it adds up to hundreds of barrels per day. (The fracture is kept open - 'propped' - by the sand carried in by the water, and left behind as the chemicals that kept the water 'thick' enough to carry the sand lose their gel and flow back with the water.

#13  I wonder how much reserves the Saudis really have. Supposedly it is 279 x 10^9 bbl. But other sources that I have been reading say that the Saudis have been using a lot of seawater to keep well pressures up. Because of secrecy on the Saudis part, they could be seriously inflating their reserves, and are playing a big game of chicken.

Glenmore---what is your take on this?

#14  I suggest this is more about torpedoing Iran's gas exports.

Much easier to get Saudi NG to European markets.

#15  AP, I share your suspicion on the Saudi reserves. Their big fields are cutting serious water.
That said, I suspect those same big fields have a LOT of oil remaining in the ground that won't come out with just water-flooding, but might very well yield 50% more if they can CO2 and/or polymer/surfactant flood them. If I was in charge over there I would be researching those options very energetically right now.
Posted by: Glenmore || 02/02/2015 19:28 Comments || Top||

#16  Glenmore, of course the Saudis wouldn't be doing that. They would hire some of the untermeschen to do the work.

#22  Iff the Saudis = Iran, etc. = MSM-Net = Are allegedly "Sitting of a Sea(s) of Oil", THEN WHY THE NEED TO FRACK AT ALL.

When I hear the term "Frack/Fracking", the first thing I think of is that somebody's traditional, already pre-established/existing deep oil field(s) are either running low or is out of [Cheap = Plentiful?] Oil.

Again, I'm still waiting for a genuine OWG Global Consensus on the REALITY-VS-FALLACY/HOAX/MISTAKE of so-called "PEAK OIL".

The World could de facto be running out of Oil [Other Resources?] right now but we're not going to know it, or be informed of it, because PCorrectness-Deniability + Electoralism is the PRIORITY, ... ... and a time when our OWG Govts-Perts are also mostly or wholly uncertain about the depths or magnitude of GWCC = SOLAR ACTIVITY/CHANGE.

Where is Humanity + Earth right now on the astronomical timeline whereby our Middle-Aged Sun will soon begin, or maybe has already begun, its natural evolution toward becom a Red Giant???

IFF THE NASA BOYZ DON'T KNOW, ASK A MADONNA FAN!

lol.

Lastly, lest we fergit "MINI-ICE AGE" = ANOTHER WAY OF SAYING EXPANDED OR INTENSIFYING SUN-LED HEATING OF PLANET EARTH AS AFFECTED BY TEMPORARY OR RANDOM INTERIM PERIODS OF "LIGHT/BENIGN" ICE OR ICY PERIODS.

Iraq
1375 people killed last January in Iraq
On Sunday, United Nations stated that the violence in Iraq had left at least 1375 individuals dead during the month of January, noting that 790 of them were civilians. The United Nations said in a statement published by ‘Reuters’ and followed by IraqiNews.com, “The acts of violence carried out by the terrorist organizations and the military operations in Iraq have left about 1375 people, including 790 civilians, dead.”

It added, “The dead included 585 individuals in the Iraqi Army, which is struggling to rebuild itself after ISIS managed to control large tracts of land last year.”

Noteworthy, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Iraq, considered Tuesday (December 30, 2014) that 2014 was the most “violent and brutal year” because of ISIS crimes, pointing out that the number of violations amounted to 3 millions, 981 thousand and 597 of which were committed by the terrorist gangs in Iraq.

IS executes prominent members who planned coup
[ARANews] Over the previous days, the city of Raqqa, in northeastern Syria, has seen several splits in the ranks of the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS), followed by arrest campaigns against a number of the group’s members.

The most prominent dissident name was Abu Talha al-Kuwaiti, the head of the al-Hisba security force of the group in the state of Raqqa, who fled with eight militants to an unknown destination, which led to imposing curfew in the city as well as carrying out raids and arrests.

Following the defection of al-Kuwaiti, the IS hardline group appointed Abu Huzaifa al-Balijiki as head of Hisba force in the state of Raqqa.

This comes in light of the media blackout imposed by the group.

Military sources in Raqqa told ARA News that the escape of al-Kuwaiti was behind a big coup process led by Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, the IS alderman of Raqqa.

Al-Ansari, aka Abu Luqman, was reportedly fighting in the ranks of al-Nusra Front (Syria’s al-Qaeda branch) before joining the IS and being named as the governor of Raqqa.

“Two weeks ago, Abu Luqman was found dead, but the IS didn’t announce the news of his death or the conditions behind it,” a local source in Raqqa (who spoke on the condition of anonymity) said on Sunday.

The same source reported that al-Ansari (Abu Luqman) was earlier accused of coordinating with Abu Talha al-Kuwaiti to carry out a coup against the leadership of the IS group in eastern Syria.

The Islamic State hasn’t issued any statement yet regarding the rebellion of al-Kwaiti or the death of al-Ansari.

Last week, the hardline group of IS executed at least 60 foreign militants who defected from the group’s ranks in Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor.

On Thursday, the IS militants shot dead four other members in the neighborhood of Rumaila in central Raqqa after describing them as traitors. The group shot the four members dead under the pretext of preserving the group’s unity. The militants killed in Rumaila were Tunisian nationals who had joined the group months ago.

The Islamic State has recently started launching organized campaigns of arrests and assassinations against its own members in different areas under its control, mainly because of their refusal to follow orders and attempts of rebellion.

Daesh claims beheading of Iraqi security personnel
Baghdad - The Daesh group beheaded an Iraqi police officer and a soldier, the latest in a long series of atrocities committed by the militants, according to pictures posted online on Sunday.

In one photo, a blindfolded man said to be a police lieutenant colonel kneels in a street in front of a row of gunmen. A masked militant is then shown beheading the victim with a machete, after which his severed head is placed atop his body and the machete driven into his back.

Another photo shows an overweight masked militant apparently struggling to behead a man identified as a captured Iraqi soldier. The caption says a second soldier was also beheaded, but his death is not shown.

The authenticity of the photos could not be independently confirmed.

Daesh spearheaded a sweeping militant offensive in June that overran large areas north and west of Baghdad, and also holds significant territory in neighbouring Syria. The brutal militant group has killed thousands of people in both countries, some of them in highly-choreographed videotaped sequences in which the victims are beheaded.

Iraqi security forces, backed by Kurdish troops, Shia militias, Sunni tribesmen and a US-led campaign of air strikes, have managed to regain some ground from Daesh. But the militants still control significant territory, including three major cities.

Troops persue commies in Mindanao
[Sun Star] Philippine troops launched Sunday a pursuit operation against suspected members of the New People's Army (NPA) they encountered in Barangay Dagohoy, Talaingod, Davao del Norte.

"We are tracking these rebels with the help of the community. Information is coming from them. We will continue to pursue them in their lairs and ensure the protection and security for the people and of the communities," Eastmincom commander Lieutenant General Aurelio Baladad said.

Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) spokesperson Major Ezra Balagtey said troops were on patrol when they encountered a number of insurgents around 3 p.m. Saturday. After around 20 minutes the NPA militants withdrew and scampered to different areas. Balagtey said that the troops recovered landmine paraphernalia, medical kits and subversive documents.

In a separate incident, troops encountered retreating NPA militants in Barangay Andap, Laak town in Compostela Valley on Friday morning following a previous encounter in nearby Barangay Kiokmay, where the gun battle lasted for about 30 minutes.

Balagtey said, "Fortunately, there were no casualty from the government side and the communist rebels side as well, despite the series of encounter. The government still encouraged the NPA rebels lay down their firearms and return to the folds of the law."

BIFF said to be mobilizing
[Philippine Star] The Philippine military is monitoring movements of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters in Mamasapano, Maguindanao in seeming anticipation of a government assault.

One security official said that tension is high in Mamasapano and nearby areas, as the BIFF has been mobilizing its fighters. He said, "Despite this, our troops are under orders to maintain their positions."

Mamasapano was the scene of the worst loss of life in Philippine National Police history, when 44 of its elite Special Action Force commandos were killed in separate clashes with the BIFF and the MILF last weekend.

More than 400 SAF troops swooped down on the remote village in Mamasapano on January 25 to capture Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir and his Filipino cohort, Basit Usman. But after killing a person reported to be Zulkifli, the SAF commandos came under separate ambushes from the BIFF and the MILF. Usman was able to escape.

Sounds as though the extraction was poorly planned, someone knew they were arriving, or both. The set up of a proper ambush takes a bit of time and preparation.
