Feats of Heroism
This story is about PVT Channing Moss, who was impaled by a live RPG during a Taliban ambush while on patrol. Army protocol says that medevac choppers are never to carry anyone with a live round in him. Even though they feared it could explode, the flight crew said damn the protocol and flew him to the nearest aid station.

Again, protocol said that in such a case the patient is to be put in sandbagged area away from the surgical unit, given a shot of morphine and left to wait (and die) until others are treated. Again, the medical team ignored the protocol. Here's a seven-minute video put together by the Military Times, which includes actual footage of the surgery where Dr. John Oh, a Korean immigrant who became a naturalized citizen and went to West Point , removed the live round with the help of volunteers and a member of the EOD (explosive ordinance disposal) team.

Ulema council: Afghans not servants
[Iran Press TV Latest] Afghanistan's influential Ulema Council gives credence to President Karzai's comments against the West, saying that he gave voice to Afghan's call for an end to inaction.

Karzai recently accused the West of interfering in his country's affairs by promoting fraud during the country's recent presidential election.

Head of the Ulema council, Qiamuddin Kashaf, who was addressing a gathering of about 150 members of the council in Kabul, said that Karzai's stance, which was in line with the official stance of the council, was an "Islamic stance" that called for the Afghan nation to be given due respect for striving to achieve liberty, independence and self-sufficiency, the BBC reported on Wednesday.

"This nation will not accept becoming a servant of anyone," Kashaf added.

The council also condemned the killing of civilians by foreign troops.

Afghanistan's Ulema Council is a state body that has about 3,000 members across the country.

Southport Air Training Cadets furious at English Defence League links
Furious Air Training Cadets have condemned a website which has accused some young Southport members of being part of the extreme anti-Islam group the English Defence League.

The Air Training Organisation has slammed claims made by news website Indymedia, that cadets from the 281 (Southport) Squadron Air Training Corps set up a local branch of the league. Indymedia claims members of the 281 (Southport) Squadron ATC openly set up the anti-Islam group Southport Squadron EDL.

A Facebook group page of the Southport Squadron EDL contains racist jokes, refers to songs about RAF bombers shooting people down and one person makes foul insults against Muslims. The group has 129 fans – it also shows photographs of people holding up Southport Squadron EDL flags and pictures from an EDL demonstration in Stoke.

The Air Training Organisation has quickly moved to distance itself from claims that Southport cadets, who are aged 13 and over, are linked to the group. Ashley Nettleton, an ATO spokeswoman, said: “Southport Squadron Air Training Corps has no affiliation with the Southport Squadron English Defence League.

“The Air Cadet Organisation is a youth organisation that encourages diversity and does not tolerate improper behaviour, including racism. Such behaviour, if displayed by any member of the ACO, would be thoroughly investigated by the organisation and appropriate action taken.'

The national EDL group has organised rallies across the country and on April 3, the Southport Visiter reported on outbreaks of violence at a supposed “peaceful protest' in Dudley. The EDL claims its organisation is solely dedicated to removing the threat of “Jihad on British shores' but the organisation Unite Against Fascism has denounced it as “an organised, violent, racist group'.

A UAF spokesman said: “Wherever these groups have surfaced their ugly heads, violence has been quick to follow. It would be bad news for Southport if this group got any stronger.'

Europe
Osama's son denied European visa for book tour
Omar Bin Laden, son of al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden, was denied visa to promote his book in France and in other European countries, his French publisher said on Thursday, Apr 15.

Omar was planning to travel to Paris on Apr 17, to release his "Osama bin laden: A Family Portrait", which was co-written with his Syrian mother Najwa, Osama's first wife, and American journalist Jean Sasson, said a spokesman for the publishers Denoel. "The countries of the (25-country) Schengen zone decided to reject his request for a visa. As of Tuesday night, France had not decided whether to grant him a visa that would be valid on its territory. Since then, there has been no word. This is taking much longer than usual and the book is due out in bookshops tomorrow," said the spokesman for Denoel.

According to a newpaper report, Omar is at present in Qatar. He was turned back from Spain and deported from Egypt, all of which took place in the same week.

Navy Access to Fox News Web Site Blocked Update: It's back
Update 12:18 CST

U.S. Navy says access to Foxnews.com restored, cannot explain earlier blockage but cites technical, not 'policy' issue

Members of the U.S. Navy were blocked Friday from gaining access to Fox News' Web site, a Navy spokesman confirmed to FoxNews.com.

Lt. Justin Cole, a spokesman for the Navy, said that he wasn't able to access that site along with other news sites, including NewYorkTimes.com. But Navy members could still go to MSNBC.com and CNN.com.

"There's got to be some type of issue with NMCI," Cole said, referring to the Navy Marine Corps Internet. Cole said he was looking into the cause.

When members tried to go to FoxNews.com, the following message appeared: "Access to this site has been denied in accordance with Navy policy to safeguard the security posture and/or to maintain the operational integrity of the NMCI."

Wrist slap for Zazi's 'tip' imam
The Queens imam who lied to the FBI about tipping off subway suicide-bomb plotters was given a wrist slap yesterday by a Brooklyn federal judge who sentenced him to the four days he's already served in jail.

Ahmad Wais Afzali, 38, had been facing six months in the clink after pleading guilty to lying to authorities about telling convicted suicide subway bomb plotter Najibullah Zazi that federal agents were following him.

But despite his break, he will have to leave the country in 90 days or be deported to his native Afghanistan under the plea agreement.
I'm sorry, but being deported to Afghanistan, presumably with concomitant revocation of American citizenship, is not exactly a slap on the wrist.
Zazi, who is also from Afghanistan and who the feds say had three co-conspirators, planned to murder hundreds of New Yorkers by detonating homemade backpack bombs in the Manhattan subways during rush hour.

Afzali, who worked as an informant for the NYPD, told Zazi that his phones were tapped, but warned him not to get involved in "nonsense" in Iraq and Afghanistan. The al Qaeda-trained bomb plotter aborted his plan, threw away his bomb material and fled the city after Afzali spilled the news that the law was onto him.

"I take full responsibility for my actions," he told the judge yesterday. "Honest to God, it was never my intention to help those idiots for what they do in the name of Islam. I apologize . . . I am pleading for mercy. I am not a bad man. The spiritual and psychological burden is far greater than any sentence you can impose."

Gates orders security fixes after Fort Hood case
Defense Secretary Robert Gates has ordered a partial overhaul of Defense Department safeguards against terror-like attacks after a scathing report found that the department's policies were "unclear" or "inadequate" to prevent the mass shooting that killed 13 soldiers at Fort Hood in November.

Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Hasan is charged in the shootings that also wounded 31.

Secretary Gates ordered the department to:
* Fully institute a department-wide FBI threat reporting system to handle suspicious incident activities.
* Establish an Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense to work directly with the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force.
* Strengthen significantly DOD's anti-terorrism training program.

Secretary Gates based his recommendations on earlier findings that:

* DOD's commitment to the Joint Terrorism Task Force is "inadequate," resulting in "inconsistent" coordination with the FBI. The Joint Task force knew well before the shooting that Hassan was in communications with an al Qaeda sympathizer and recruiter but that was not reported to DOD or the military.
* Commanders and supervisors do not always receive information about individuals who may commite violent acts.
* Counterintelligence training does not address "emerging threats including self-radicalization" that may contribute to potential violence. Hasan was known to have gone off on Islamic-related religious rants and expressed strong opposition to Muslims in the US military serving in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
* DOD policy prohibiting certain supremacist or extremist behavior is "unclear" and "limited," when it comes to individual behavior.
* DOD does not have a comprehensive cyberspace counterintelligence program to alert authorities to "non-foreign intellligence" on potential threats.

Gates' recommendations came as Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman and ranking member Susan Collins threatened to issue subpoenas to the Defense and Justice Departments on Monday if the Obama administration fails to turn over information the panel needs to conduct its inquiry of the Fort Hood shooting.

The Joint Task force knew well before the shooting that Hassan was in communications with an al Qaeda sympathizer and recruiter but that was not reported to DOD or the military.

Bullshi* flag down! More Gates doubletalk. The local Criminal Investigation Office (CID) at Fort Hood had liaison with and possibly a designated representative(s) at or from the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF). Think about it! Law enforcement from the largest military installation in CONUS has NO coms with the JTTF and the SAC in WACO? What does Gates think the word 'Joint" means? How is it now that it is DoD and the Army's "inadequate commitment" that is at fault?

Bottom line...the Bureau was monitoring or using Hasan as an intelligence source and purposely told the Army NOTHING about it! Nice, quiet little operation....until the source went POSTAL on them. Once again, Army takes the hit and DoJ/FBI slide by. Nicely done Gates. Nicely done indeed.

Gates order appears to be the first time the word 'terrorism' has been used by the gov't in the Hasan case. Issue the subpoenas anyway. You've been LIED to.

#7  Civilian question here -- Hasan was recently transferred from Brooke in San Antonio to the Bell County jail in Waco. There were so many people around him, it looked like every SWAT team in Texas was there!

Why the county jail? I would think he would be in the Army jail system. Or is this the normal when murder is committed?

#8  When the military was gutted from 750,000+ during the 90s Peace Dividend to 480,000 by 2000, executed both by the Donk White House and Trunk Congress, the Army choose to downsized detention facilities. The only long term warehousing of miscreants is the US Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth. Since the individual is going to face courts martial, he remains in the jurisdiction of the Command having that authority, which is in this case, Fort Hood. They do not have long term holding facilities, so it's 'contracted out'.

#10  What Gates ordered seems like a pretty lukewarm response; that which one would expect from a bureaucrat: threat reporting system, appoint an Asst. Secretary of Defense to work with DHS, strengthen anti-terrorism training program.

Not far away is Oak Ridge, the city behind a fence during WWII. Security was intense. People kept their lips zipped. Secrecy was of the utmost priority. Oak Ridge was not even on maps of the area. Today, you would be confronted by armed security in most secure DOE areas. You might get shot if you would not comply with directives when ordered by security. One would think security at military bases would be as good.

Defense ministry receives Phoenix base in GZ
BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: The Iraqi Defence Ministry on Thursday received the responsibility of the U.S. Phoenix base inside the Green Zone in central Baghdad, a senior Iraqi army officer said.

“The ministry received the responsibility of the Phoenix base which belongs to the U.S. army,' Deputy Chief of Staff, General Hussein Jassem told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The transfer of responsibility from the U.S. army to the Iraqi ministry came after an agreement between the two sides a few months ago after the approval of the council of ministers,' he added, noting that the transfer is part of the U.S. withdrawal agreement signed between the two governments.

Iraqiya hails successful Iran talks
[Iran Press TV Latest] The Iraqiya party, which won the most seats in the country's March 7 parliamentary elections, has announced that its members have had a "successful" visit to Iran.

The bloc, led by former prime minister Ayad Allawi, won 91 seats of Iraq's 325-member parliament.

"The talks were successful and Iran would like the Iraqiya List to play a key role in building bridges with other countries in the region," DPA quoted Maysoon al-Damlooji, an Iraqiya spokesperson, as saying on Thursday.

She added that the parties held discussions in order to create "a balanced relationship preserving the interests and sovereignty of both countries, without interfering in each other's internal affairs."

She stressed that her party leaders "would not allow Iraq's territory or its airspace to be used to support any attack on Iran".

Last month, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast expressed Tehran's readiness to host all Iraqi political movements to show Iranian support for the Iraqi political process and help the country form its new government as soon as possible.

Allawi's Iraqiya bloc defeated Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's Rule of Law Party by securing only two additional seats. None of the parties contesting the polls are able to form a government on their own.

Iraqiya is in talks with other parties to form a coalition government.

Woman denies death wish
[Straits Times] AN INDONESIAN woman facing a possible death sentence for allegedly harbouring terrorist Noordin Mohammed Top said on Thursday she feared she would die during a police raid on her house last year.

Putri Munawaroh, 20, was the only survivor of a nine-hour shoot-out with police at her house in Central Java in September, in which Noordin and three other Islamist extremists including her husband were killed.

She calmly told the South Jakarta district court she was unable to leave the house during the siege as she was pinned under part of a collapsed roof.

'If I had died then, I might have died a martyr. But I don't want to die... I want to live,' she said as a witness at the trial of Rahmat Puji Prabowo, one of Noordin's alleged accomplices. 'I heard the police asking us to come out but I couldn't do anything because I was trapped.'

In her own trial which started earlier this month, prosecutors have described her as a committed extremist who intended to die as a martyr while protecting Noordin, whom her husband had brought home as a 'guest'.

But Munawaroh, who has given birth in police custody, said on Thursday she did not know Noordin and was also unaware of illegal firearms and explosives found in her house.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
'Hezbollah entitled to end occupation'
Lebanon's foreign minister says Hezbollah has been granted the right to use power against the occupation of Lebanese territories.
They mean to use force, naturally...
Ali al-Shami told Press TV on Wednesday that the movement has been given the right by the government to liberate the country's occupied territories. He added that a recent government policy statement recognizes the Lebanese nation's right to liberate the territories remaining under the Israeli occupation.
So they can start another war with the Hated Zionists, thereby getting downtown Beirut reduced to rubble. Again.
The foreign minister has also denounced Tel Aviv for infringing on his country's sovereignty. Shami said that since 2006, Israel violated Lebanese airspace for more than 6,500 times, despite the UN resolution 1701 which brought a 33-day Israeli waged war to an end in the summer of 2006.

Syria denies arming Hezbollah with Scud missiles
[Al Arabiya Latest] Syria denied U.S. charges it had supplied Hezbollah guerrillas with long-range Scud missiles and said on Thursday that Israel might be using the accusation as a pretext for a military strike against Syrian targets.
"No, no! It wudn't us. Somebody else musta give 'em to 'em!"
Israeli President Shimon Peres on Tuesday accused Syria of sending Hezbollah long-range Scuds. The United States said on Wednesday it was "increasingly concerned" about the transfer of more sophisticated weaponry to the Syrian and Iranian-backed Hezbollah, which fought a war with Israel in 2006.

"Israel aims from this to raise tension further in the region and to create an atmosphere for probable Israeli aggression," the Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"The Syrian Arab Republic denies these fabrications."

Terror Networks
Osama bin Laden has a page on Facebook
Osama bin Laden has a page on Facebook. The al-Qaeda leader is using it as a platform to show videos and speeches to Islamic militants. His address is given as "the mountains of the world".

Last night, security experts urged Facebook's US owners to shut down the profile page, named "The leader of the Mujahideen, Osama bin Laden."

A Sun investigation revealed it became active less than a month ago but had already attracted nearly 1,000 extremists. Access is via the Taliban's own Facebook presence. Although the language used is Arabic, messages in English have started to appear.
