HIMARS strike killed 50 Taliban leaders in Helmand, claims US Military
[Khaama Press] The US Military officials claim that the latest rocket artillery strike in southern Helmand province has left at least 50 senior Taliban leaders dead.

Lt. Col. Martin O’Donnell, a spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan, quoted by Military Times said a weapon system known as the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS, which is capable of firing GPS-guided rockets, destroyed a command-and-control position that was a known meeting place for high-level Taliban leaders.

Accordi g to Lt. Col. O’Donnell, the rocket artillery strike left at least 50 leaders dead.

He also added that because of the large number of leaders killed and their involvement in a range of attack planning, the impact of the HIMARS strike “will be felt beyond Helmand province.”

“Task Force-Southwest, under U.S. Forces-Afghanistan authorities, confirmed a ground-based rocket artillery strike using the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS, against a command and control node for high-level Taliban leaders in Musa Qala district, May 24,” the US Forces in Afghanistan said in a statement last week.

The statement further added that the structure was a known meeting location for prominent Taliban leaders, where they planned and facilitated attacks against Afghan National Defense and Security Forces, who are supporting election security in the area.

US forces use B-1B Lancer in latest massive airstrike on Taliban drug facilities
[Khaama Press] The US Military says a B-1B Lancer aircraft was used in the latest Arclight airstrike carried out on drug facilities amid ongoing air campaign to eliminate the financial sources of the group, mainly coming from the drugs business.

A B-1B Lancer aircraft from the 34th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron here bombed multiple Taliban
...Arabic for students...
narcotics production and storage facilities in Afghanistan during a mission on May 18, according to a report by 379th Air Expeditionary Wing.

The 34th EBS BONEs deployed their largest amount of weapons on narcotics facilities since the squadron’s reintroduction in the U.S. Air Forces Central Command’s area of responsibility in April.

This mission was part of realigning airpower from Operation Inherent Resolve, and elsewhere, to support increased activity in Afghanistan and bolster Afghan National Defense and Security Forces capabilities.

"Increased airpower supports a deliberate air campaign designed to degrade the Taliban’s primary means of funding its operations ‐ narcotics production," said Capt. Mark Olme, a 34th EBS pilot. "These strikes will mitigate the Taliban’s ability to fund Lion of Islam operations that kill innocent Afghan civilians and strengthen the ANDSF’s ability to fight and win on the ground."

Since November, more than 75 strikes against narcotics processing and storage facilities and stockpiles have resulted in the loss of tens of millions of dollars for the Taliban. According to Frank Mercurio, 34th EBS chief of weapons and tactics, the intent is to go after the root of the problem.

Africa Subsaharan
Two migrants die, 80 saved in Sahara ordeal
[AlAhram] Two African migrants colonists died of thirst and 80 were saved after they were stranded in the Niger desert while trying to reach Europe, the International Office of Migrations (IOM) said Tuesday, in the second Sahara rescue drama in less than a month.

"Last Saturday, 80 migrants colonists were saved in the desert, 382 kilometres (237 miles) from the town of Agadez," the IOM's Niger office said on Facebook.

"Sadly, two others died from extreme dehydration."

The migrants colonists had been heading to Libya, the crossing point for the hazardous voyage to Europe, when their vehicle broke down and they were "abandoned by their smugglers," the OIM said.

They were stranded for three days before help arrived.

The agency says it has helped to save more than 3,000 people this year through search-and-rescue teams, run with Nigerien NGOs, which comb the desert for stranded migrants colonists.

On May 22, the OIM, a UN-related organization, said 386 migrants colonists had been picked up in a rescue operation the previous week between Arlit and Assamaka, a town on the border with Algeria.

Niger has become one of the main routes for poor migrants colonists heading north to the Mediterranean coast in the hope of crossing to Europe.

The Saharan route is notorious for its dangers, which include breakdowns, lack of water and callous traffickers who abandon migrants colonists in the desert.

In 2015, Niger introduced a law making people-smuggling punishable by a jail term of up to 30 years. The armed forces, for their part, have also stepped up patrols in the desert.

However,
a lie repeated often enough remains a lie...
these measures seem to have had little effect on the trafficking, and may have prompted smugglers to use more dangerous off-road tracks to avoid interception.

Europe
French police clear biggest migrant camp in Paris
[AlAhram] Security forces moved in on the biggest migrant camp in the French capital on Wednesday where some 1,700 people lived in makeshift tents alongside a canal.

The migrants colonists would be housed temporarily at more than 20 sites across the Gay Paree region while the authorities checked their identities, Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said in a statement.

CRS riot police were deployed at dawn, some arriving by boat, as the migrants colonists emerged from their tents and waited patiently to be bussed away from the Port de la Villette camp in the northeast of Gay Paree.

"We don't really know where we are going," said a Libyan who reached Gay Paree seven months ago and gave his name as Issam.

"It was hard here," he added, holding on to his one piece of baggage.

The "Millenaire" or Millennium camp was home mainly to Sudanese, Somali and Eritrea
...is run by the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), with about the amounts of democracy and justice you'd expect from a party with that name. National elections have been periodically scheduled and cancelled; none have ever been held in the country. The president, Isaias Afewerki, has been in office since independence in 1993 and will probably die there of old age...
n migrants colonists.

Two similar camp sites in the capital along the Canal St Martin, which houses 800 mostly Afghan migrants colonists, and the Porte de la Chapelle, home to 300-400 people, would also be quickly evacuated, said regional prefect Michel Cadot.

"The other camps will be evacuated as soon as possible next week," Cadot told news hounds.

The authorities said the dawn operation Wednesday was the 35th such evacuation in Gay Paree in the last three years as thousands of migrants colonists have arrived seeking a better life.

French President Emmanuel Macron has pushed a new immigration law, decried as too hardline by some associations but which he sees as essential to identify genuine asylum seekers and economic migrants colonists.

The law, which is still being debated in parliament, would speed up the asylum process and lead to increased deportations of people who are seeking work in La Belle France, rather than fleeing war or persecution at home.

The issue of migration was thrown into the spotlight at the weekend after a Malian migrant, in the country illegally and working in the construction industry, saved a child dangling from a fourth-floor balcony.

The dramatic rescue act by Mamoudou Gassama, who scaled the Gay Pareeian apartment bloc with his bare hands, turned him into a global superstar and led Macron to grant him honorary citizenship.

Immigration remains one of the main concerns of French voters, polls show, and the far-right National Front leader Marine Le Pen won a third of votes in last year's presidential election.

Rather than Gassama's heroics, some far-right activists have highlighted a different case involving migrants colonists this week: that of two Afghans placed in durance vile
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
for allegedly harassing a woman they judged to be inappropriately dressed on a train.

The Gay Paree mayor's office, run by Socialist Anne Hidalgo, praised the clearance of the camps on Wednesday but said that it had been calling on the national government and interior ministry to take action for four months.

Several officials from the mayor's office were openly critical of Interior Minister Gerard Collomb.
