We learned a simple thing this week: that the BP clean-up effort in the Gulf of Mexico is hampered by the Jones Act. This is a piece of 1920s protectionist legislation, that requires all vessels working in U.S. waters to be American-built, and American-crewed.

American ships are good ships, built for the American market by Americans. They are crewed by Americans and think like Americans and they vote like good honest Americans in American elections.
It is an honor that we have such a fleet of fine American ships sailing and trading in American Waters for Americans.
Otherwise you'd have Able Bodies only making 30k a year.

If you had actually read the article from the Ottawa Post, you would have seen that the Jones Act can be suspended by the president ( If he knows about it)

Bush suspended the Jones Act in the aftermath of Katrina. Obama won't suspend the Jones Act cause the unions told him not to (and it would interfere with his golf games).

Yes Dave, could be. Don't think it will be, because that would cut out good American jobs, on American made ships working American ports and American Steavadors. Catch muh drift?
However, when it comes to American built and manned sea going vessels, the US Navy has no peer. The world, regardless of its constant anti-American harping, loves the free ride.

We usually associate jihadic warriors with fiery, anti-American and anti-Israeli sermons and with homicide bombings and airplane hijackings. We don't think of jihadists as homebodies or in terms of their family relationships.
But we should.
Islamic fundamentalism (Islamism) is associated both with terrorismand with Islamic gender apartheid. Thus, Islamists demand that their women shroud themselves, marry their first cousins, serve their brothers and father as domestic servants, keep quiet about routine daughter--and wife--battering, and keep away from infidel influences.
If they don't, they risk being honor murdered.
Not all Muslims are Islamists. Many are anti-Islamists, dissidents, moderates, secular, or apostates. I know, because I work with such people.
But, show me a jihadist and I'll show you someone who believes in polygamy, demands that his women wear the Islamic veil, keep away from foreigners,' and remain totally obedient and subordinate to him. If not, their lives are in danger. And they are warned about this repeatedly.
Not all honor killers actually hijack airplanesbut they probably support those who do.
Incredibly, young immigrant girls or first generation citizens are being murdered by their own families in honor killings in the West. In order to prevent such murders, it is important to understand that honor killings differ significantly from western-style domestic violence. However, when an honor killing occurs here, the police, as well as Islamist and feminist groups, still insist that the murder is just like domestic violence everywhere. But that is not true.
- In 1989 in St. Louis, 16-year-old Palestina Isa was murdered by her father and mother because they saw her as too American' and because she was friendly with an African-American boy.
- In 2000, 25-year-old Jaswinder Kaur was murdered by her mother and uncle because she had married someone deemed inappropriate by her wealthy Sikh family.
- In 2007 in Ottawa, Canada, 16-year-old Aqsa Parvez was murdered by her father and brother because she refused to wear the Islamic veil.
- In 2008, in Dallas, teenage sisters Sarah and Amina Said were lured by their mother and murdered by their father who was outraged by their Western' ways.
- In 2009, in Peoria, Arizona, 20- year-old Noor Al-Maleki was murdered by her father (with support from her mother and brother). Faleh ran over his daughter with a two-ton jeep. Noor's family felt dishonored by her flight from an arranged marriage and by her sexually liberated American lifestyle, which included wearing tight jeans and makeup.
Western fathers and mothers do not routinely murder their young daughters or for such reasons.
According to my new study in Middle East Quarterly, such classic killings have accelerated significantly over the last twenty years. The study examined the fate of 230 victims on five continents. I found that Muslims committed 96% of these murders in Europe, 84% in North America, and 91% worldwide. Sikhs and Hindus committed the rest. There may be a more significant Hindu involvement in honor killings where caste has been violated but such killings take place mainly in India, and not in the West.
My study also documents that two types of honor killings and/or two distinct victim populations exist. One group's average age is seventeen; the other group's average age is thirty-six. Both groups are murdered because they are seen as too Western,' too independent,' or because they have engaged in a sexual impropriety'even if only an imagined one.
Thus, immigrant girls and women are at special risk in the West. Those who exercised their option to assimilate were killed in particularly gruesome ways.
In Europe, 68% of such killings were torturous, agonizing. Girls and women were stabbed 20-40 times, raped and set on fire, bludgeoned to death, beheaded, beaten, stoned. These women were tempted by Western freedoms. They did not want to wear religious clothing, they wanted to go to school, have careers, wear western clothing, have non-Muslim friends, and marry for love.
Such murders may be intended as an object lesson for other female immigrants who are expected to lead subordinated and segregated lives amid the temptations and privileges of freedom.
The level of primal, sadistic, or barbaric savagery shown in honor killings often approximates the murders in the West perpetrated by serial killers against prostitutes or randomly selected women.
This suggests that gender separatism, the devaluation of girls and women, normalized child abuseas practiced in an era of Islamism and jihadism, may lead to femicidal levels of aggression towards girls and women.
This culture of honor killings may reflect or even create a climate in which barbaric jihad seems normal, even desirable.
Honor-related violence, including honor killings cannot be justified in the name of cultural relativism, religious tolerance, anti-racism, diversity, or political correctness. These acts are human rights violations and crimes.
As long as Islamist groups continue to deny, minimize, or obfuscate the problem, and government and police officials accept their inaccurate versions of reality, women will continue to be killed for honor in the West.

the cult that threatens the elusive "moderate" muslim with death. to the extent none will speak out against them. many don't want to - tacit approval - elsewise a fatwa. there is nothing to islam but fear and ignorance, slavery and death.
The silence is that muslims who fear the islamists cannot fight the battle for their own lives. They rely solely upon the hope that the western world will save them. It's not freedom lest you take up arms and demand it. And they won't. iran as an easy example. until they no longer fear the basjid and their beatings and arms, nothing will happen. Then again, how can you ask a cult that is based on submission and ignorance and brutality and fear and death and slavery - no, terror - founded on terror. to the point that the most lacksadaisycal "muslim" has eyes shuttered and lips sown shut. lest they find you.
Never have a people been so hard to free. it's been centuries folks, pick up a book that isn't the Koran. Really, try it. Try education. Try freakin' anything. But we are fed up with the whining about the things you desire and are not permitted to do, say, learn, love.. And have you do absolutely nothing but submit - and look westward.

A YEAR ago on Saturday, a movement was born that offers the best chance of ending the threat posed by Iran's support for terrorism and pursuit of nuclear weapons. Millions of Iranians turned out to vote against the extremist government of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in a presidential election - and were outraged when the regime announced an improbable landslide victory for the incumbent. Since then, what is now known as the Green Movement has swelled into the most consequential challenge ever mounted to Iran's Islamic theocracy. Through sheer brutality - shootings, mass arrests, tortures, rapes and executions - the regime has mostly driven it off the streets; leaders called off demonstrations that had been planned for Saturday. But the popular revulsion with Iran's rulers that drives the opposition has not faded. What was the name of the young lady protester murdered last year? I know her photo is in the RB files.

To a large extent, the Green Movement is leaderless. The opposition presidential candidates it initially rallied behind are aging adherents of clerical rule who have little in common with Iran's huge ranks of frustrated young people. Yet it seems likely that a victory by the opposition would mean a shift toward democracy and liberal reforms. The White House was slow to embrace the movement - so much so that protesters held up signs last year asking President Obama, "Are you with them or with us?" Lately, Mr. Obama has made some stronger statements, including one on Thursday that was delivered in his name by an aide before the National Endowment for Democracy, which gave its annual award to the Green Movement.
But as Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) pointed out in a powerful speech before the group also on Thursday, the president has hesitated to "unleash America's full moral power to support the Iranian people." Mr. Obama clings to the hope that the radical clique in Tehran will eventually agree to negotiate in good faith - "an assumption," Mr. McCain noted, that "seems totally at odds with the character of this Iranian regime."
The senator proposed "a different goal: to mobilize our friends and allies in like-minded countries, both in the public sphere and the private sector, to challenge the legitimacy of this Iranian regime, and to support Iran's people in changing the character of their government - peacefully, politically, on their own terms and in their own ways."
In fact, the administration has been inching in this direction. It has taken some small steps to help Iranians overcome the regime's Internet censorship. Many of the new sanctions are focused on companies controlled by the Revolutionary Guard, which is the regime's backbone and prime instrument of repression. But the policy could be much more aggressive: The State Department, for example, is still sitting on tens of millions of dollars appropriated by Congress for Internet firewall-busting.
Mr. Obama's strategy hasn't slowed Iran's nuclear program or its aggressions toward Iraq, Lebanon or Israel. The popular discontent reflected in the Green Movement offers another avenue for action, one that is more in keeping with America's ideals. It's time for the president to fully embrace it.
