Baltimore And Chicago Are In A Race To The Bottom, Murder-Wise

Perhaps Mayor Pugh could send a memo to Rahm Emanuel out in Chicago. He still seems to be so busy blaming his own police for all the city’s ills that he doesn’t have much time to deal with the spiraling murder rate growing right under his nose.

Officers To Be Put On 12-Hour Shifts, As City Violence Increases
[BALTIMORE.CBSLOCAL] Baltimore sees multiple deadly shootings in just a matter of hours. It was a burst of violence that forced the commissioner to make a drastic move today.

All uniformed officers will be on mandatory 12-hour shifts, as the city hustles to control the crime.

Ava-joye Burnett reports the violence spilled over from the night into broad daylight today.

After a violent night, the police department announced a plan on how to address this problem, as the Police Commissioner was angered by the violence.

The violence in Baltimore started Monday evening and lasted through the night. It spilled over into the middle of Tuesday and by the end of it all, at least 12 people had been shot and at least six dead.

The victims include a 28-year-old man killed during a drug dispute on Bentalou Street, a 37-year-old woman killed in a bullying incident on Gertrude street and a man and woman‐ both in their twenties, killed during a quadruple shooting on Bonaparte Ave.

The police commissioner didn’t hold back or temper his tone.

"Quite frankly it pisses off the community, it angers us, it frustrates us," says Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis.

Shortly after that passionate presser from the police commissioner, there was another shooting in northwest Baltimore. That was around 1:30 p.m. in the afternoon.

Every patrol officer, detective, even administrative officers will put on uniforms and start patrolling the streets in 12-hour shifts, effective immediately.

"It’s sad, it’s just very sad."

One woman lives near one of the shootings. She thinks more police is a good start.

"It’s just really treacherous on these streets. A lot can be done. I wouldn’t give up on this city. I wouldn’t personally, living here all my life," says Hope Aye, from Baltimore.

The commissioner said there’s a broken system that allows repeat offenders to get back out on the streets.

"We are going to keep fighting our way through this, there is nowhere for us to run. There is nowhere for us to hide. We are responsible for public safety in the City of Baltimore, and we are going to keep working our hearts out until we get to a safer better place."

#5  ...And it should be pointed out that the BPD is still officially under sanction as to the use of force. They may have to work overtime, and the city is obligated to PAY that overtime - but I don't think it's going to make any difference. As soon as some Feral Youth (TM) gets blown away by one of the admin cops.who haven't seen the street in years, it'll stop.

Bodega worker suffers broken jaw after violent avocado attack
[NYPOST] Two men were caught on video launching avocados at a Bronx bodega worker -- breaking the man’s jaw with the succulent fruit.

The men went on the wild fruit-slinging spree in the Stadium Gourmet Deli near Yankee Stadium after an argument about their food order at about 4:45 p.m. on May 29, according to police.

After being viciously pelted with both avocados and bananas, the 21-year-old bodega clerk was taken to Lincoln Hospital.

The victim suffered cuts and fractures to his face as well as a broken jaw.

Cops were looking for the two suspects Tuesday night.

Women-only ‘full nudity' spa's ‘no male genitals' rule ignites transgender debate

TORONTO ‐ Controversy over a female-only spa's "no male genitals" policy has reignited debate over the rights of transgender people to access traditionally gender-exclusive spaces, even as the federal government pushes stronger protections prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity and gender expression.

The uproar over Toronto's Body Blitz Spa prompted a flurry of complaints on social media, with longtime regular Shelley Marshall among those vowing to boycott the luxurious retreat.

Marshall says she tried to bring her transgender friend to the spa last year but was told she would only be welcome at the bathing suit-optional facility if she had undergone sex reassignment surgery.

Megyn Kelly’s Second Episode Limps
[ADWEEK] A re-air of CBS’s 60 Minutes more than doubled the viewership of NBC’s Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly.

In head-to-head competition, 60 Minutes, which was Sunday’s most-watched show, drew 7.9 million viewers while the second episode of Kelly’s show, which included an interview with Erin Andrews, averaged 3.6 million, down -42 percent from its debut episode a week earlier.

In the A25-54 news demo Kelly’s show averaged a 0.8 rating (down -33 percent from last week’s 1.2), while 60 Minutes averaged a 1.1 rating. Kelly’s show improved the 7 p.m. ET timeslot for NBC by +13 percent in the demo, vs. the network’s season-to-date average for the hour (excluding sports and awards shows).

Pipeline Environmental Review Re-opened, while the oil still flows
US District Judge James Boasberg on Wednesday instructed the US Army Corps of Engineers to conduct a new environmental review of the Dakota Access Pipeline but did not suspend the pipeline's operations.

He ruled that the US Army Corps' review "did not adequately consider the impacts of an oil spill on fishing rights, hunting rights, or environmental justice, or the degree to which the pipeline's effects are likely to be highly controversial."
So now environmental impact statements need to consider whether an action might be highly controversial? Environmental justice? The Progs are gonna *love* that!

Arabia
How BAE sold cyber-surveillance tools to Arab states
[BBC] A year-long investigation by BBC Arabic and a Danish newspaper has uncovered evidence that the UK defence giant BAE Systems has made large-scale sales across the Middle East of sophisticated surveillance technology, including to many repressive governments.

These sales have also included decryption software which could be used against the UK and its allies.

While the sales are legal, human rights campaigners and cyber-security experts have expressed serious concerns these powerful tools could be used to spy on millions of people and thwart any signs of dissent.

The investigation began in the small Danish town of Norresundby, home to ETI, a company specialising in high-tech surveillance equipment.

ETI developed a system called Evident, which enabled governments to conduct mass surveillance of their citizens' communications.

A former employee, speaking to the BBC anonymously, described how Evident worked.

"You'd be able to intercept any internet traffic," he said. "If you wanted to do a whole country, you could. You could pin-point people's location based on cellular data. You could follow people around. They were quite far ahead with voice recognition. They were capable of decrypting stuff as well."

China-Japan-Koreas
Parents of coma-stricken American college student keeping bedside vigil for their son, who has shown no signs of improvement after being 'brutalized and terrorized by the pariah regime' of North Korea
[DailyMail] - Otto Warmbier, the 22-year-old student serving a 15-year prison sentence in North Korea, arrived home in Ohio late Tuesday

- Looking tired and drawn, father Fred Warmbier was spotted in the hospital coffee shop on Wednesday morning to get much needed refreshment for family

- Otto, wearing a blue shirt and black pants, was carried off the plane and placed on a stretcher and rushed to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center

- He reportedly fell into coma after getting botulism and taking 'sleeping pills'

- Trump administration takes credit for the release, calling it a 'Trump-led effort'
It certainly didn't happen as a result of "leading from behind."
Update from the Daily Mail at 3:10 p.m. EDT:
Otto Warmbier has a 'SEVERE neurological injury': Father says there's 'no excuse' for what North Koreans did to his son as he blames the Obama administration for not doing enough to secure his release

University of Cincinnati Medical Officials say Otto Warmbier is in stable condition, but has a severe neurological injury.
It should be noted that Mr. Fred Warmbier is the head of a successful mid-size chemical company, and the family live in one of the more expensive suburbs of Cincinnati. The idea that their son would steal a poster to earn a used car from a church is utterly absurd. Separately, I strongly suspect Mr. Warmbier was among the one third of Donald Trump voters who earnt upward of $100,000, as opposed to the third in the middle class $50,000-100,000 income range or the third who earned below $50,000.

#1  Good job Trump and Tillerson. Hopefully Otto will recover, but at least for his family, they are all back together again.

A crucial mission for Tillerson MUST be the cancelation of the Boeing and Airbus sale of long range aircraft to North Korea's nuclear ambitious ally, Iran.

While the world makes the mistake of only focusing on NK's miserable record of inter continental missile development (a calculated distraction by Kim?) as delivery systems for nukes, these planes can be modified to extend range and to carry nuclear payload internally while on the outside appearing as airliners on international flights to major population centers.

#4  The poster issue has always been irrelevant.

Warmbier put himself at the Nork's mercy when he travelled to North Korea. That was his mistake.

Good behaviour or not, if the Norks want to seize a Western traveller they will do so because they can.

Also I don't see this release as a success for the US.

I hope for Warmbier's recovery but I suspect that he was intentionally put in this state and that the Norks made sure that it is irreversible.

I.e. this was a cruel and unusual execution.

This is a demonstration of North Korea's ruthlessness and power, akin to the WMD murder in Malaysia.

Calibrated exposure to low oxygen levels can do the same thing. Put the victim into an airtight chamber and simply drop the oxygen level to one that destroys cerebral function but preserves other organs. Norks have probably experimented to get that exact effect without killing the victim, i.e., no "heart attack" necessary at all.

Sandy Hook Promise Foundation Drops Megyn Kelly as Gala Host After Alex Jones Interview
The Sandy Hook Promise Foundation, a nonprofit founded by family members of some of the Sandy Hook shooting victims, dropped NBC's Megyn Kelly as the host of its annual gala following her interview with Infowars' Alex Jones.

The foundation, a gun violence prevention group, made the announcement late Monday, saying the organization cannot support anyone who gives Jones a prominent platform, the Washington Post reported.

"Sandy Hook Promise cannot support the decision by Megyn or NBC to give any form of voice or platform to Alex Jones and have asked Megyn Kelly to step down as our Promise Champion Gala host," Nicole Hockley, the co-founder and managing director of the organization, said in a statement. "It is our hope that Megyn and NBC reconsider and not broadcast this interview."

Jones, a radio show host and conspiracy theorist, has called the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., which killed 20 children and six adults, a government hoax.

Kelly's interview with Jones does not air until next Sunday, but the NBC host previewed the conversation on this past week's episode of "Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly."

The interview has faced widespread criticism since its announcement. Mothers of Sandy Hook victims have spoken out against Kelly, saying the interview legitimized Jones' views by having him on her show.

JPMorgan Chase pulled its local television ads from NBC News programming until after the interview airs.

Jones himself has called for the interview to be canceled.

"I'm calling for @megynkelly to cancel the airing of our interview for misrepresenting my views on Sandy Hook," Jones tweeted Monday.
Continues.
