[Khaama Press] The NATO ...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions... leaders meeting will kick off in Brussels today to hold talks regarding the deterrence and defence, stepping up the fight against terrorism, and and achieving fairer burden-sharing.
The NATO leaders will also hold talks regarding the extension of the Afghan forces funding beyond 2020.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told news hounds on Tuesday "We will close the Summit with a meeting on Afghanistan, joined by our Resolute Support partners."
He said "Our presence in Afghanistan is vital to ensuring the country never again becomes a safe haven for international terrorism."
According to Stoltenberg "And Allies are increasing their commitment, both in forces and funding."
"We have added around 3,000 more trainers to our mission," he said, adding that "At the Summit, I expect we will also agree to extend funding for the Afghan forces beyond 2020."
Stoltenberg also added that the NATO leaders express full support for President Ghani’s bold peace initiative and his government’s reforms.

....beyond 2025 ..... beyond 2030.... beyond 2100 ... and the place will still be a 10th century shit-hole - such that all of the blood and treasure that we have poured (and will continue to pour) into the place is COMPLETELY in vain. Truly a fool's errand. There is a well-established historical REASON that Afghanistan is known as the "graveyard of empires" - and you would think that our leaders would "get a clue", but - alas - we keep doing the same thing year after year, decade after decade, and then expecting a DIFFERENT outcome. The memes about "the definition of insanity" can just about write themselves.
[Al Jazeera] An Afghan asylum seeker who was deported from Germany last week after spending more than eight years in the country has killed himself, Afghan and German officials have said.
The 23-year-old did away with himself at a hotel in the Afghan capital, Kabul, on Tuesday after being forcibly returned on July 4 along with 68 others, an Afghan official said.
A German interior ministry confirmed the news at a regular news conference saying: "We received confirmation from the Afghan authorities today morning that one of the passengers on the repatriation flight was found dead in accommodation in Kabul.
"According to the Afghan authorities, it was a suicide."
On Tuesday, German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer appeared to joke that the 69 deported Afghans were a birthday present.
"Just on my 69th birthday - and I didn't request it - 69 people were sent back to Afghanistan," he said with a raised smile on his face.
"That's way above earlier levels."

[Libya Observer] The commander of the self-styled army Khalifa Haftar ...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all... ordered Wednesday the arrest of frontlines commander at al-Saiqa Force Mahmoud al-Werfalli for his "escape from military prison while under investigation for military codes’ violations."
Media outlets loyal to Haftar reported sources from the general command of the self-styled army as saying that the arrest order is due to al-Werfalli’s break out of prison in Rajma, eastern Libya.
Libya al-Hadath TV channel, which is owned by Haftar’s family, said Haftar ordered the apprehension of runaway al-Werfalli and his loyalists "for breaking the law and endangering people’s lives."
Al-Werfalli made a cinematic escape from prison and arrived in Benghazi last week.
He also carried out an attack on military investment authority looking for its chief al-Madani al-Fakhri, stealing some of the belongings in there.
A leaked walkie-talkie call was also posted on social media on Tuesday when he vowed to keep looking for al-Fakhri till doomsday, calling home a corrupted person and a thief.

[StrategyPage] The UN persuaded the Arab coalition to pause its offensive in late June so the UN could attempt to negotiate an end to the battle for the Red Sea port of Hodeida. But so far all the rebels will offer is to turn over control of the port to the UN (something the UN has been demanding for years) while the government demands that the rebels move away from the coast. The rebels will not consider this because it would cut them off from the weapons and equipment the Iranians smuggle in as well as opportunities to attack ships in the Red Sea. The rebels show no signs of surrendering control of Hodeida or any portions of the Red Sea coast. The Arab coalition reminded the UN that a "pause" was not a ceasefire and the fighting around Hodeida and other key rebel locations (the capital Sanaa and the Saada, the home province of the Shia rebels) are experiencing more combat with government and coalition forces.
As the battle for Hodeida continues the rebels are taking heavy losses and more of their Iranian advisors are being killed or captured, along with some of the specialized equipment that has been smuggled in.
Strategy Page prefers we post only a taste here at Rantburg, going to their site to read the rest of their reports. I was thrilled to learn that they use Rantburg as one of their information sources.

[PRESSTV] Protesters chained themselves to the front steps of the ministry of transport in Rome on Wednesday morning over the migration policy of Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, namely the closure of ports to migrants colonists arriving over the Mediterranean.
Footage shows police and firefighters cutting chains with bolt cutters and carrying the protesters away as they shout slogans.
Salvini recently gained notoriety for his hardline stance on migration and his decision to close Italian ports to the migrant rescue ship Aquarius, which was eventually allowed to dock in Spain.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Since the entrance of ISIS into Sinjar which is the stronghold of the Yazidi people in northern Iraq in August 2014, and until June of 2018, official UN statistics revealed that 3,300 Yazidi Kurds were able to escape ISIS’s grip out of 6,417 others who had been kidnapped by the krazed killer group.
Samira Hassan, one of ISIS’s Yazidi survivors in Sinjar, now resides in a camp in Erbil, the capital city of the Kurdistan region in Iraq, tells a story of defiance and strength in the face of war and darkness brought on her people by the krazed killer group.
Samira said that she was only 18-years-old when her family, along with12 other families, "miraculously" escaped the atrocities of ISIS in their region in Sinjar.
Four years later, Al Arabiya English met with Samira and her family who are living in a building which is still under construction in Erbil, to share a story of love and war.
Samira said in the middle of the night in June, 2014 while paying a visit to a family friend, she and others were told that ISIS has surrounded Sinjar and that there’s no way out, otherwise they will "just be an added number to ISIS victims".
The young Yazidi added that she and her family bravely ran away through a border crossing with Syria, escaping an attack by ISIS.
Arriving in a northern town called Zakho, it became a temporary home for them until they moved towards Erbil looking for shelter and work to survive.
Despite her agony of the continuous move and displacement, her love for Saeed (her husband) conquered all odds, meeting him in the camp in Erbil where they got married and later had her daughter Freiha.
She said her daughter Freiha was deprived from living in her grandparents’ home as ISIS put an end to her childhood before it even began.
She is now pregnant with their second child, hoping that one day they will reunite with all loved ones in their land.
Gang rapes and brutal crimes
Moving from her happy moments, she starts with tears in her eyes telling her accounts of the atrocities of ISIS. She tells how three maiden of tender yearss, family related, were gang raped, while another Yazidi woman who just gave birth to her child, lost her mind and did away with himself when ISIS slaughtered her infant child and cooked his flesh and gave it to her to eat, then the krazed killer group told her that she just ate her child.
She said that the road to escape this brutality was not easy, as they got lost many times when trying to reach the Syrian border.
Samira described their trip to Erbil as being full with fear and blood, saying after they escaped an ISIS attack, they were faced with a flat tire causing a car crash leading to a head injury to a family relative in her thirties who had witnessed the execution of her brother by ISIS because of his religion.
The impossible return to Sinjar
Despite that seven months have passed since the Iraqi government declared victory over ISIS, still the security situation in Sinjar and other nearby areas in djinn-infested Mosul ... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn... , are unstable.
Khodr Hassan, one Yazidi who escaped ISIS atrocities and lives in Erbil said to Al Arabiya English that the reason why it is impossible to go back to Sinjar, is because the place is completely destroyed and full of diseases resulting from corpses left unburied.
He added that there are many land mines left by ISIS in many areas, while the security situation is unstable, as armed forces of Evil from the Kurdish group PKK and the mobilized forces are taking over Sinjar as stronghold.
Khodr called on all concerned parties and the UN agencies to interfere and look into their situation to provide a safe return to their homes.
The Yazidis, a Kurdish-speaking minority came to the spotlight when ISIS took over large parts of Iraq, victimizing its members, committing massacres and subjecting them to forced conversions, sexual slavery and other reported atrocities.
