In an interview with broadcaster France 2, Mr Darmanin described the stabbing as "a new bloody attack against our country, against journalists".
"It's the street where Charlie Hebdo used to be. This is the way the Islamist terrorists operate," the interior minister said.
He said he had ordered security to be stepped up around synagogues this weekend for Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
The main suspect has not been named, but Mr Darmanin said he arrived in the country three years ago "as an isolated minor" of Pakistani nationality.

Colleagues of the victims said they had been outside the Premieres Lignes news production agency smoking a cigarette when they were attacked.
The firm has offices in the Rue Nicolas Appert, a side street off Boulevard Richard-Lenoir where the former Charlie Hebdo offices are located. A mural to those killed in the Charlie Hebdo attack is nearby.
"I went to the window and saw a colleague, bloodied, being chased by a man with a machete," one employee, who asked not to be named, said.
"They were both very badly wounded," Paul Moreira, the founder and co-head of Premieres Lignes, told AFP news agency.
The minister added that the suspect was not known for being radicalised, but had a previous arrest for carrying a screwdriver.
Police quickly sealed off the 11th arrondissement in eastern Paris and a blade - described as a machete or a meat cleaver - was recovered nearby.
Nearby metro stations were closed and five schools in the area immediately went into lockdown. The schools were allowed to reopen some hours later.
Police said they arrested the main suspect in the nearby Bastille area. Shortly afterwards a man said to be from Algeria was also detained.

Some hours later five other men, said to be of Pakistani origin, were detained in the north-eastern suburb of Pantin during a search of building believed to be the home of the main suspect, French media reported, citing police.

11 a.m., Delta Park: Several hundred people affiliated with Proud Boys have amassed in the park. Loudspeakers blasted AC/DC’s "Thunderstruck." Since Beethoven is racist.
Some demonstrators carried guns, baseball bats, magazine clips, knives or batons. Militia members armed with different types of weapons are also posted throughout the park. One person asked to check the credentials of The Oregonian/OregonLive journalists. I guess so they know who to shoot first.
Some Portland police officers stood in uniform at the north and south ends of the park.

I use to say once the rioters started attacking the vehicle and its occupants to proceed steadily and slowly thru the mob.
But the Rioters have countered now by covering the vehicle windshield to blind the driver, damaging vehicle, pouring gas of the vehicle and slashing tires.
Now I would never stop. I'd just lay down on the horn and proceed safely as possible thru and not worrying about what feels like previously unseen Speed Bumps.
If stopped by Police:
Consider having a police report statement ready.
eg.. We suddenly found the vehicle surrounded by a VIOLENT MOB that was threatening the Lives of myself and my passengers/Family. Being surrounded and blocked in, I had no option but to warn the mob with my horn and proceed, otherwise face serious injury or even possible death. .
Then ask the officer.
Officer: _(badge name), Does this violent mob have a City issued gathering permit and did that permit allow for such illegal violent behavior, like attacking peaceful by-standers and motorists?

Two American supporters of Isis living in Texas and South Carolina were arrested for conspiring with a terrorist organization to plan "Netflix worthy" attacks on Trump Tower, the New York Stock Exchange and federal buildings, according to the FBI.
Jaylin Christopher Molina, who goes by "Abdur Rahim", and Kristopher Matthews, who goes by "Ali Jibreel", were arrested on Monday for allegedly planning attacks that would earn them "rock star status baby", according to San Antonio-based KSAT news.
The two men are also accused of discussing travel to Syria to join Isis and recruit additional members, according to a criminal complaint filed in the US District Court for the Western District of Texas in San Antonio,
Kristopher Sean Matthews, 34, from Eglin, South Carolina:
Covert agents tracked communications between the two over encrypted messaging applications as they allegedly shared graphic Isis videos, AK-47 training manuals, bomb-making instructions, and attempted to radicalize others to join the terrorist organization, according to the affidavit.
An investigator with the FBI says in the criminal complaint that the secretive chat groups professed their loyalty to Isis and their hate for the United States, saying America is the enemy that needed to be defeated.
“We need to stick together, we need to defeat them, we need to take a lot of casualties,” Mr Molina is alleged to have said, according to The State.
Mr Matthews allegedly said they shouldn't attack places "like malls where innocent children are", but should rather attack government buildings like the CIA, FBI, and DEA, as well as the New York Stock Exchange and Trump Tower.
“I would hit places like that to send a message,” Mr Matthews allegedly said, according to The NY Post's reporting of the criminal complaint.
“In my opinion, if you really want to do some damage and make a statement I would have a team … have a three to four-man team and everyone spreads out … hit different sides then boom engulf them.”
As recently as 25 August, Mr Molina was in contact with a woman in Europe who was requesting instructions on bomb-making, according to authorities.
Mr Matthews allegedly wrote in one of the chat groups that if they accomplished the "mission", they would be given "rock star status baby".
"This could be Netflix worthy,” Mr Matthews allegedly wrote in the chat group, according to the reported court papers.
The pair face up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
