[Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours] This week, History Happy Hour heads to the Pacific. Few Americans know that as Allied forces landed in Normandy on D-Day, the Pacific fleet was lifting anchor and steaming toward Saipan, soon to be a major battleground. A few weeks later came the invasion of Tinian, the island from which the Enola Gay took off to drop the bomb on Hiroshima. Host historians Chris Anderson and Rick Beyer welcome historian Don Farrell, who lives on Tinian, and is the author of "Tinian and the Bomb." Bring your cocktail to the place where history is always on tap! History Happy Hour, right here, Sunday at 4 PM Eastern.

This "Stephen Ambrose" view of history is so dated and lame. So many Youtubers doing a fantastically better job. They really get down into the weeds with the source material and discover new things all the time, than the boring old stories we heard a thousand times already.
For example, here's the story of Japan fighting Italy in the Pacific Theatre - sounds unlikely, but incredibly combat did occur between these two nations in 1943. You ain't gonna hear Ambrose and PBS covering this. Find out the full story here:

The Fleet at Flood Tide, Hornfischer, is a great read.
Start with Neptune's Inferno, then Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors.
Hampton Sides (Ghost Soldiers, fantastic) has a good book about Korea "On Desperate Ground" if you can get past the teenage girl hate he has about General McCarthur as seeded as his man crush for Kit Carson in "Blood and Thunder".
[JPost] - The New York Board of Rabbis condemned recent protests in an Orthodox neighborhood in Brooklyn at which face masks were burned and at least one person wound up in the hospital after being beaten.
"We cannot defend individuals in our Jewish community who demonstrate a blatant disregard for the COVID-19 health protocols and endanger their lives and those of other people," the 750-member rabbinic group said in a statement Thursday, the New York Post reported.
"We are also appalled by the shameful behavior of those who burn masks or beat people who protest their non-compliance," the statement added.
The statement comes in the wake of several nights of protests in the heavily Orthodox Brooklyn neighborhood of Borough Park against measures the city and state are taking to contain the spread of the coronavirus. At one protest, the brother of Mordy Getz, a well-known Orthodox businessman who had been outspoken about the need for masks and social distancing, was beaten and had to be taken to the hospital. A reporter and a cameraman were also the targets of violence. Haredim: the form is, superficially, Jewish - but the content is a weird mixture of Idolatry & Islam.
[Road & Track] Thinking about pulling off a big road trip before winter kicks in? This might be just the truck for you. It's a 1977 Ford F-350 that was converted into a camper when new, and it's covered just over 24,000 miles since. A true time capsule, it looks immaculate and is said to work perfectly. Best of all, it's up for bidding right now on eBay.
Welcome to You Must Buy, our daily look at the cars you really should be buying instead of that boring commuter sedan.
According to the seller, this F-350 motorhome was converted by a company called Country Campers in Eugene, Oregon, and has spent its entire life in the Pacific Northwest. When not in use, it spent its time in indoor storage under a cover—unheard of for most vehicles this size. That would explain the condition and originality, then.
What's more surprising is that everything on the truck works—including the onboard generator, air conditioning, and cruise control. It has everything you need to live on the road: A toilet, a shower, a kitchen area, water storage, and sleeping space for six. The only thing that currently needs replacing is the burner unit for the hot water heater, though the seller says they're planning to replace it before the truck is sold.
The camper is currently up for bidding on eBay in Vancouver, Washington with a high bid of $12,850 and six hours remaining. If cruising across the country in a slick vintage motorhome has always been a dream of yours, this might be your best opportunity to make it a reality.

when will architects take into account the abilities of fire departments to deal with fires in such structures.
The same day Appliance Manufacturers take into account Maintenance and Installation.
Fires on the Windward Side easily jump floors, the wind pushing into balconies, repeat. That fire pressure has to go somewhere and the more 'fire resistant' the apartment the more that exhaust has to go into the wind.
It is a science, but it is also crazy counter-intuitive at times.

The ECB (in Frankfurt, of course) is a pretty much German. But they all roll over in EU land. Even Switzerland, not a EU country, isn't the Switzerland we once knew.
[TheBloggingHounds] Under a Treaty signed in late 2019 with Canada, the People’s Liberation Army of China has been quietly massing military troops in Canada since the beginning of 2020 and those troops are believed to be readying for an actual military invasion of the United States.
While it has long been rumored that China began massing troops and armor in southern Mexico for a similar invasion goal, word of such troops appearing in Canada only began this year. Those rumors were pretty much laughed off until video emerged this week of Chinese troops on a back road of Salt Spring Island, near Vancouver, British Columbia. Here is that 35 second video:
The country that can't even invade Taiwan is supposed to be able to supply a division thousands of miles over the ocean? And this single division is supposed to...what? Occupy the White House and enforce regime change in Washington DC?
As desirable an outcome as ousting the deep state is, I just don't see it happening. This is just disinformation or a troll. Who fell for it?
Sorry about that. I was in the process of adding yellow highlight for cingold’s own comment when my iPad was hit by a stray gamma ray, erasing the post. I am in the process of reconstituting as best I can — link is now fixed, title and text to follow.

Oh those wily Chinks. They try to take out our leadership with the Kung Flu then invade us from the frozen North. Thank God Trump shucked off the virus like a common cold and is still commander in chief.

Seriously arrrgh!! In case Things Happen again, the link is here. There is a map of the west coast of Canada with the location in question marked. It looks like only a plane-load of troops in the videoed column, but that number of American Special Forces would make me nervous...
[Jerusalem Post] The letter concludes by saying that Barrett would run counter to the example set by Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Jewish justice who died last month and whom Barrett would replace.
An array of liberal Jewish groups signed a letter with other faith-based organizations appealing to senators not to confirm President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett, citing her past opposition to the Affordable Care Act.
The letter, signed by 41 groups in all — and spearheaded by the National Council of Jewish Women — notes a case upcoming on the Supreme Court docket that could dismantle the act, also known as Obamacare.
President Donald Trump, who wants the legislation dismantled, has said he will replace some of its provisions, including guaranteeing coverage to people with preexisting conditions, but he has not yet advanced legislation that would do so.
"Should the ACA be struck down, tens of millions of Americans will immediately lose access to coverage as an unprecedented health crisis rages on, plunging our entire health care system into confusion and chaos," said the letter sent Friday to all 100 senators. "People of faith refuse to remain idle while the health, safety, and lives of countless individuals are on the line and believe that our next Supreme Court justice must commit to upholding precedent affirming the constitutionality of the ACA."
The letter concludes by saying that Barrett would run counter to the example set by Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Jewish justice who died last month and whom Barrett would replace.
In addition to NCJW, the 17 Jewish groups signing the letter include a number of Reform and Reconstructionist movement bodies, in addition to Jewish human rights advocacy groups.
In a separate statement this week, the Reform movement said it opposed Barrett’s nomination because of what it described as her stated opposition to the ACA, the right to an abortion and LGBTQ rights. The Reform movement has rarely opposed Supreme Court nominees in the past.

[Forbes] The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against Yale University, alleging it violated civil rights law by discriminating against white and Asian-American students in its admissions process, in the latest step President Donald Trump’s administration has taken in opposition to affirmative action.
KEY FACTS
The DOJ filed the lawsuit Thursday in federal district court in Connecticut, where it claimed that Yale’s "oversized, standardless, intentional use of race has subjected domestic, non-transfer applicants to Yale College to discrimination on the ground of race."
Yale has been under investigation by the DOJ since 2018, after a complaint was filed by the Asian American Coalition for Education claiming discrimination in Yale’s admissions process.
In August, the DOJ said its probe found that race was a "determinative factor" in hundreds of admissions decisions per year, and it asked that Yale submit a plan within two weeks describing how it would eliminate race and national origin from its admission process.
Yale President Peter Salovey responded at the time by saying that Yale would not comply, arguing that the DOJ’s demand would actually put the university at odds with existing law.
The Wall Street Journal first reported the lawsuit Thursday.
Yale did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Forbes.
CRUCIAL QUOTE
"Because Yale claims that its race discrimination is necessary to admit sufficient numbers of racially-favored applicants, mostly Black and Hispanic applicants, Yale signals that racially-favored applicants cannot compete against Asian and White applicants," the lawsuit said, according to the Journal. "This kind of race discrimination relies upon and reinforces damaging race-based stereotypes."
KEY BACKGROUND
In 2017, the Civil Rights Division of the DOJ announced it would investigate and file lawsuits against universities using race as part of admissions. That move was followed up in 2018, when the Trump administration rescinded a policy put in place under President Barack Obama calling for race to be a considering factor in college admissions. The Trump administration has also pushed to end the consideration of race in admissions at Harvard University, while the Department of Education sent a letter to Princeton University last month demanding documents in order to inspect whether the elite university engages in discriminatory practices.
BIG NUMBER
7%. That’s Yale’s acceptance rate. Yale is ranked third in the most recent edition of Forbes "Top Colleges" list.

Weren't we treated by a Big Ivy league President admitting his Univ. had practiced Racial applicant selection and placement for generations just a month ago? But did his Univ. also accept Federal money then for falsely stating they were adhering the Federal Educations Civil Rights Guidelines?
The DOJ should either have the Univ. President and Board up on Perjury, fraud & civil Rights charges.
Or, in front of a Senate Committee presenting an OFFICIAL Retraction read under under oath by the President and each Board member individually. A statement DOJ pre-approved that states their racial statements were false and made purely to incite and support a false political narrative.
