TRIPOLI - Calls by the EU Parliament for Libya to free medics sentenced to death for infecting hundreds of children with HIV will only worsen the prisoners situation, a charity run by Muammar Gaddafis son said on Friday. The parliament urged EU states on Thursday to review ties with oil-rich Libya and step up pressure to secure the early release of the five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor.
What the European Union announced recently, that it will put pressure on Libya to free the Bulgarians, will have a negative influence on the situation of the medics, said a statement from the Gaddafi Foundation headed by Saif al-Islam, Libyan leader Gaddafis son and his most influential envoy. All measures taken by the European Union against Libya will have negative consequences on the development in relations that Libya and the EU have seen recently.
Translation: EU and what army?
Diplomats in Brussels said EU foreign ministers would tread a delicate path at a meeting in Brussels on Monday to avoid aggravating the situation.
Sure wouldn't want to aggrevate the Libyans, now would they.
According to a draft statement, they will express grave concerns about the plight of the medics and call for a positive, fair and prompt solution to the case.
Ooooooh, a 'grave' concern, that's even worse than a 'serious' concern.
At the same time, they are expected to hold out the prospect of benefits to Libya rather than tough steps. The statement is also expected to include the idea that EU-Libya relations could further develop if there is a resolution of this case, a diplomat said, adding that the limited scale of current ties meant there was little to be gained by threatening to review relations.
"C'mon guys, why won't you take our bribe?"
It is a difficult balancing act, another EU diplomat said. We want to make clear to Libya that the way they have conducted the trial is just not acceptable. On the other hand, from a Libyan perspective, this is a national judicial process and they dont like being told to do it in a different way.
"They just hate to be told to follow the rules of humanity."

Useless EU jabber. Send NATO troops in and get these people. If you eliminate this moron in the process, so much the better. Your f**king talk has produced ZERO results whether with Iran, this fool, or anywhere else you've ventured. Catch on.

What NATO troops? I thought all the fighting units were in Afghanistan, except for the British and Polish units in Iraq... and garrison units in the former Yugoslavia. Are the draftees really capable of even this kind of action?
Q. May I ask whether a woman can put her elbows on the floor during prostration in prayer, and whether she can read the Quran when she is in her period?
(Name and address withheld)
A. A woman is advised to bring her body together when she prostrates in prayer, which means that she should not put her arms or legs wide apart. Putting ones elbows on the floor is not the proper position for man or woman. The Prophet describes prostration as putting seven bones on the floor. These are the forehead, the palms, the knees and the toes.
The majority of scholars agree that a woman should not read the Quran when she is in her period. The same applies to a man when he is in the state of ceremonial impurity, or janabah. The Prophet is quoted as saying: I do not permit reading the Quran to a woman in menstruation or a man in ceremonial impurity. However, some Hadith scholars cast doubt on this Hadith, describing it as lacking in authenticity. It is more advisable to avoid reading the Quran during menstruation, except where a verse is quoted in a book one is reading. A woman may engage in Gods glorification and praises at any time.

Forehead-1
Palms-2 (presumably, although 1 is possible thanks to sharia law)
Knees-2 (or 1, see palms)
Leaving 2 for toes.
Do most pious Muslims have two toes, or do all pious Muslims have big toes longer than the 2nd toes, thus enabling them to load the bases at 7?
There's a whole school of foot reading that analyzes personality types by which of the toes is longest. Does anyone remember what is said about those whose first toe is longest?
"Big Toe Length
The length of the big toe is governed by the dominant gene, H. Individuals whose big toe is shorter in comparison to the second toe possess the dominant gene. The inheritance of the homozygous recessive, hh, results in the big toe being longer than or equal to the second toe."
The Prophet engaged me when I was a girl of six (years). We went to Medina and stayed at the home of Bani-al-Harith bin Khazraj. Then I got ill and my hair fell down. Later on my hair grew (again) and my mother, Um Ruman, came to me while I was playing in a swing with some of my girl friends. She called me, and I went to her, not knowing what she wanted to do to me. She caught me by the hand and made me stand at the door of the house. I was breathless then, and when my breathing became Allright, she took some water and rubbed my face and head with it. Then she took me into the house. There in the house I saw some Ansari women who said, "Best wishes and Allah's Blessing and a good luck." Then she entrusted me to them and they prepared me (for the marriage). Unexpectedly Allah's Apostle came to me in the forenoon and my mother handed me over to him, and at that time I was a girl of nine years of age. [9]
According to Urwah ibn al-Zubayr:
Khadija died three years before the Prophet departed to Medina. He stayed there for two years or so and then he married 'Aisha when she was a girl of six years of age, and he consummated that marriage when she was nine years old.[10]
According to Aisha:
the Prophet married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old, and then she remained with him for nine years (i.e., till his death).[11]
According to Ursa ibn al-Zubayr:
The Prophet wrote the (marriage contract) with 'Aisha while she was six years old and consummated his marriage with her while she was nine years old and she remained with him for nine years (i.e. till his death).[12]
Sahih Muslim
According to Aisha:
Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) married me when I was six years old, and I was admitted to his house at the age of nine. She further said: We went to Medina and I had an attack of fever for a month, and my hair had come down to the earlobes. Umm Ruman (my mother) came to me and I was at that time on a swing along with my playmates. She called me loudly and I went to her and I did not know what she had wanted of me. She took hold of my hand and took me to the door, and I was saying: Ha, ha (as if I was gasping), until the agitation of my heart was over. She took me to a house, where had gathered the women of the Ansar. They all blessed me and wished me good luck and said: May you have share in good. She (my mother) entrusted me to them. They washed my head and embellished me and nothing frightened me. Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) came there in the morning, and I was entrusted to him. [13]
According to Aisha:
Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) married me when I was six years old, and I was admitted to his house when I was nine years old [14]
According to Aisha:
Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) married her when she was seven years old, and he was taken to his house as a bride when she was nine, and her dolls were with her; and when he (the Holy Prophet) died she was eighteen years old.

. . . ceremonial impurity . .
Would the sorority girls in Animal House say EWWWWWW? I think so.
#14
Ceremonial impurity:
The state of ceremonial impurity, or janabah, occurs as a result of ejaculation, whether involuntary, as in the case of a wet dream, or deliberate, or as a result of sexual intercourse. To remove it, one has to have a full bath, washing his head and every part of his body with water. So, a shower, without soap is sufficient. It is not possible to offer prayers while a person is in a state of ceremonial impurity. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to remove that state by taking a shower or a bath immediately. If that is delayed, then one simply does not do well, but there is nothing sinful in it, unless it causes him to miss an obligatory prayer.
If one happens to get into this state two or three times a day, it may not be easy for him to have so many showers. Therefore, he should make sure that removing that state is easy before one gets into it.
If it happens two or three times, without taking a shower in between then one shower would remove it all. Suppose a person goes to sleep after he had prayed Fajr, and on waking up he discovers that he has had a wet dream. He realizes that he must leave home immediately because he is late for work. That is appropriate, if he knows that he will come back before Asr time and he will be able to have his shower and pray Dhuhr on arrival. Similarly, if one has more than one intercourse with his wife during the night, he can have one shower for all. He is recommended, however, to have an ablution, or wudhu', in between.
Involuntary discharge of urine is an illness which can be treated. For the purposes of prayer, however, one should make sure that the urine does not fall on his clothes or his body. [A urinal discharge does not cause ceremonial impurity and needs washing of the affected areas of the body only.] What he should do is to tie a polyethylene bag with a piece of cotton or tissue paper in it. When he wants to have ablution and pray, he replaces it with a clean one and has his ablution. He needs to have a fresh ablution only for every prayer, repeating the same method for cleanliness.

Thanks, Thinemp, I figured it had something to do with jiz. Freud would've had a field day analyzing Muslims' multifarious sexual fixations. And you'd think feminists would also find plenty of phallic boogeymen to deconstruct.
#17
The lack of feminist response to this socio-religious Islamic buffoonery is something that puzzles me. Imagine the uproar if Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson had even hinted at such things.
#18
It is the overarching Political Correctness, anti-Western "All cultures are equal and deserving of the same respect", and plain old Bush Derangement Syndrome that prevents the "feminists" from saying anything. Remember that during Clinton's reign, the feminists were making excuses for his sexual escapades with a subordinate - but the moment a Repub gets caught fooling around with a staff member, it is "Sexual Harassment", and off with his head.

Thinemp Whimble,
If I remember correctly, Bedouin washing with water in quite rare, and they usually wash by rubbing their skin with sand.
Do they have to wait till they reach an oasis before they can pray?

What is it with a woman's period and men?
Not just with moslem men, but pretty much all of them.
Here's a clue, guys: Without a woman's period, you wouldn't even exist. Deal with it; we have to.
I presume the moslems believe Allen made everyone and everything - which would have to include menses. So either there's nothing wrong with it, or Allen screwed up.
Or probably Arab men are just f*cked up about women, sex, the koran, sunrise, sunset, air, water, and just about everything else.

HAIL, 20 January 2007 Shoppers at a crowded shopping center in this north-central Saudi city caught a rare glimpse of a woman driving a car (rare, that is, if theyve never traveled outside of the Kingdom), the daily Al-Watan reported yesterday. The 25-year-old was arrested in the city, but only after having driven 250 kilometers of highway from her farm to the south. Bystanders told the newspaper that they were amazed that the rebellious woman had made it that far. The brother of the woman said she had stolen her fathers car when he wasnt looking. He said she had psychological issues. Perhaps she simply needed some drive time to herself.
#2
This is totally unislamic. Let all who witnessed this aberration go blind immediately. Somebody needs a fatwa applied for not controlling this female.
#4
Her psychological issues may relate to her overactive bullsh_t detector. It is amazing that the fathers put up with this and don't get tired of leaving the office to drive their children to after school activities. There are no soccer moms there, only dads who miss work to take children to the doctor, music lessons, and soccer practice.

Do you get the feeling we're being prepared for something?
The Venezuelan president, Hugo Chávez, yesterday offered the bleakest medical update yet on Fidel Castro, saying he was "battling for his life". The pessimistic view came days after Mr Chávez, who is one of Castro's closest allies, and who speaks with him regularly, had said his recovery was slow and not without risks.
Mr Chávez, attending a summit of Latin American leaders in Brazil, said he had spoken to the Cuban leader in the past few days. He compared his condition to the difficult days in the run-up to the 1959 revolution when he was a guerrilla leader in Cuba's Sierra Maestra. "Fidel is in the Sierra Maestra again, battling for his life," said Mr Chávez.

Well, they put the toe tag on him already, so it is looking grim. Someone is going to inherit a practically new skateboard if ol' Foodel doesn't perk up.
Fiji coup leader Commodore Voreqe (Frank) Bainimarama who yesterday threatened to retaliate against New Zealanders for sanctions against his administration has separately promised his Government will respect human rights. He also claimed the military-backed Government was making serious efforts to deal with complaints that had been lodged against "alleged military interrogation tactics".
Soldiers have been beating and humiliating some critics of the coup who have been taken military headquarters for interrogation, and one man is reported to have died after being picked up by the military in unexplained circumstances.
At Christmas, six pro-democracy activists complained of being beaten at the barracks, with a group of men and women forced to run around the barracks parade ground in their underwear. Yesterday Cdre Bainimarama said that questioning people at the military camp had always been the last resort. "People who were taken in for questioning were people who repeatedly defied warnings," he said in a statement. "There was a need to take people in for questioning to suppress any disruptive intentions by individuals and groups so as to contain the peaceful transition required in the military's clean-up campaign".

Lou Dobbs is making some noise on behalf of the recently sentenced border patrolmen.
Bits from transcript of recent broadcast:
DOBBS: New developments tonight in the case of the two imprisoned former U.S. Border Patrol agents, Jose Compean and Ignacio Ramos. And new indications that the border fence project is losing support both in Washington and in some towns near the border with Mexico.
Casey Wian tonight reports that President Bush says he'll take a hard look at the Ramos and Compean case -- a major development.
CASEY WIAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Lou, family members of imprisoned former Border Patrol agent Ignacio Ramos say they've been in telephone contact with the White House, pleading for a presidential pardon.
WIAN (voice-over): For the first time since former Texas Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean were convicted of shooting and wounding an illegal alien Mexican drug smuggler, their supporters are hopeful President Bush will intervene in a case many lawmakers of the president's own party say is an outrageous miscarriage of justice.
MARY STILLINGER, IGNACIO RAMOS' ATTORNEY: We were very excited to hear that the president will be looking into this case. I know he probably doesn't know the facts of the case right now. In our opinion, there's been a lot of misinformation issued by the U.S. Attorney's Office about this case, and we're looking forward to correcting it.
WIAN: The president spoke about the case for the first time this week with CNN El Paso affiliate KFOX. While federal prosecutors have sought to portray the agents as rogue law enforcement officers, the president engaged in no such rhetoric.
GEORGE W. BUSH, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: The Border Patrol or law enforcement have no stronger supporter than me. There are standards that need to be met in law enforcement, and according to a jury of their peers, these officers violated some standards.
I -- on this case, people need to take a hard look at the facts, at the evidence that the jury looked at, as well as a judge. And I'll -- that's -- I will do the same thing.
WIAN: While he refused to rule out a pardon, the president did attempt to deflect the issue.
BUSH: Now, there's a process for pardons. I mean, it's -- and it's got to work its way through a system here in government. But I just want people to take a sober look at the reality.
WIAN: The reality is there's no requirement a pardon must go through that lengthy process.
JEFFREY TOOBIN, CNN SR. LEGAL ANALYST: President Bush is well within his rights if he wanted to pardon them tomorrow.
WIAN: Meanwhile, Ramos and Compean remain in protective custody. The U.S. Marshal Service says that's because they are former law enforcement officers.
Turning to our poll question tonight, the question is: Do you believe that Congress should launch an investigation of the prosecution of the two U.S. Border Patrol agents and the Justice Department's decision to give immunity to an illegal alien drug smuggler as a basis for that prosecution? Yes or no?
Cast your vote at LouDobbs.com. We'll have the results upcoming.
When I checked, the poll was running 97% 'yes'; that might get some politicians' attention.
These guys shot at the dope runner 14 times. They walked around the area after he hightailed and picked up all the shell casings. Then they didn't report the shooting incident. There's lots of moving parts here and I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Bush waits for things to slow down and all the facts to emerge before he takes action. This is not necessarily the no-brainer it is being made to appear. Let's wait for all the facts.

Having done internal investigations on BPAs, these fellows (and suprs) would have had some time off, but no way would I have given any credence to the doper, much less talk an AUSA into giving him immunity. These two BPAs are nothing more than a political statement by someone who is or who is going into politics.
New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton says on her Web site that she is entering the 2008 presidential race. The excitement was so thick you could smell it. At least I think that was excitement...
Clinton's announcement, coming days after Sen. Barack Obama shook up the 2008 race with his bid to become the first black to occupy the White House, establishes the most diverse political field. Clinton is considered the front-runner, with Obama and 2004 vice presidential nominee John Edwards top contenders. New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who would be the first Hispanic, intends to announce his plans on Sunday.
With millions in the bank, a vast network of supporters and top status in nearly every poll of Democratic contenders, Clinton has launched the most viable effort by a female candidate to capture the White House. She is the first presidential spouse to pursue the office; her husband, Bill, served two terms in the White House from 1993-2001.

As a New York voter and taxpayer, my primary objection is that the next eighteen months will be taken up with campaigning and not representing the people of New York. Panic rush after watching Obama-fever catching fire
Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton embarked on a widely anticipated campaign for the White House on Saturday, a former first lady intent on becoming the first female president. "I'm in and I'm in to win," she said on her Web site.
Clinton's announcement, days after Sen. Barack Obama shook up the contest race with his bid to become the first black president, establishes the most diverse political field ever.
Clinton is considered the front-runner, with Obama and 2004 vice presidential nominee John Edwards top contenders. New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who would be the first Hispanic president, intends to announce his plans on Sunday.
"You know after six years of George Bush, it is time to renew the promise of America," Clinton says in a videotaped message in which she invites voters to begin a dialogue with her on the major issues - health care, Social Security and Medicare, and the war in Iraq.
"I'm not just starting a campaign, though, I'm beginning a conversation with you, with America," she said. "Let's talk. Let's chat. The conversation in Washington has been just a little one-sided lately, don't you think?" "I'll talk, you listen. You talk, I'll pretend to listen"

You mean that Laughing Girl, I mean Cuddles, is running?
NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- The amphibious transport dock ship USS Trenton (LPD 14), was decommissioned Jan. 17 in a ceremony at Naval Station Norfolk. Immediately following the decommissioning, Trenton was recommissioned and transferred to the Indian Navy, bearing the name INS Jalashwa. The event marks the first time a U.S. Navy vessel has been transferred to the Indian navy. In recent months, the crew of Trenton has been working alongside Indian sailors, training them to operate the ship efficiently and safely.
Trenton will continue to serve all the free nations of the world, just as she served the United States, as we expand the 1,000-ship navy, said Rear Adm. Garry Hall, Commander, Amphibious Group 2.
The commanding officer of Jalashwa, Indian Navy Capt. B.S. Ahluwalia, expressed his gratitude to the crew of Trenton, and praised their professionalism. Todays transfer is a significant event in the growing relationship between our two countries and our two navies, said Ahluwalia.
Commissioned in March 1971, Trenton took part in numerous humanitarian operations, including the evacuations of American civilians from Liberia in 1996 and from Lebanon in 2006. In addition, in 1991, Trenton was responsible for evacuating the U.S. and Soviet ambassadors and 193 foreign nationals from Somalia. During Trentons final deployment, the ship took part in maritime security operations off the Somali coast of eastern Africa.
Trentons commanding officer, Cmdr. Samuel Norton, spoke proudly and fondly of his crew and time aboard the ship, saying that without such an outstanding crew, Trenton would not have been the same. Its people that have made Trenton what she is today, and its people that will keep the memory of Trenton alive, Norton said.
Trenton employed a crew of approximately 415 Sailors and could embark nearly 1,000 Marines.
The ship was a member of the Austin-class amphibious transport dock ship. The ship is 570 feet in length and displaces approximately 17,000 tons when fully loaded. The Austin-class currently is being replaced by the newer, more-modern San Antonio-class LPD.
More from Wiki: The Indian Navy has renamed the USS Trenton as the INS Jalashva (river horse, or hippopotamus) and plans to keep it at Norfolk Naval Base for refitting until May 2007. Six H-3 Sea King maritime utility transport helicopters will be operated from the ship. The ship likely to be based at Visakhapatnam under the Eastern Naval Command.

India is earning its place as a major world power with the three ingredients: a strong economy, a strong military, and a willingness to project that military, not just for their own ends, but for international goals as well.
The last goal is not as meeching as it sounds. By force projecting when you don't have to, or when it is not in your vital interest to do so, you both create useful alliances and open the door to trade.
#2
Though the Trenton is old, and has had a fair number of problems, the IN was eager to get their hands on her.
They want to study the design and actually learn how to operate a LPD for a few years before building their own.

Considering all the problems that the Indians have had with aircraft production, it seems more probable that over the next 10-15 years, the US will be decommissioning this class of ship and it will be immediately recommissioned into the Indian Navy. The Austin and follow-on classes are very complicated ships to build, and if you do it wrong, you get a ship like the De Gaulle - where the propeller keeps falling off.
Besides which, the Indians have several advantages with the buy it used approach - for the last year of US operations, the Indians can have a secondary crew assigned, learning the ship and its problems; immediately after the ship is transfered, they can have SLEP done to it to correct all known issues; the ships in question have already had their shakedown cruises and had all the issues discovered then fixed; and no nasty surprises like failed welds or non-functional electronics, which Indian tank and aircraft production have been prone to.
Jordans King Abdullah II told an Israeli newspaper Friday that his country wants its own nuclear program. In an interview with the daily Haaretz, Abdullah said his desert kingdom, which borders Israel and has a peace agreement with it, wanted nuclear power for peaceful purposes and was already discussing its plans with western countries.
