Simple reminders about posting on the Burg
A few simple reminders on posts material to the Burg, which we review here from time to time:

  • Check for duplicates before you post. We've had a number of these lately, so please check on the Burg, particularly if it looks like 'breaking news'.

  • Provide a source URL for your post. If you don't your post will be deleted. None of the moderators have enough time to look for the source of your post. And do not, repeat, do not, bury the URL in the text of the post with an [h ref] tag.

  • Shorter, not longer, titles. Remember, the http:// source does NOT go into the title. Snarky and catchy titles are fine.
But make them explain what the article's about, please!
  • File it in the right place. If it's about Burma, don't file it under 'Great White North'.

  • We focus on the WoT and matters related to the WoT. That includes general thuggery around the world such as Zim-bob-we, and the politics surrounding the WoT. The farther away it is from that, the less likely people here want to read it here on Rantburg. We assume y'all read other weblogs for the other news. Weird animal stories, of course, are always welcome: they go into the SAST as a 'non-WoT' item. But domestic issues in Australia, surface crawlers on Mars, and the general skankery regarding Paris Hilton shouldn't be posted here. Fred gets all the Brittany posts.

  • Opinion pieces go into the 'Opinion' category. Tricky, eh? This includes blog pieces. Some exceptions exist: VDH, Lileks, and Marc Steyn can go into any appropriate category. All the rest go into Opinion. And that's not an invitation for other blog-owners to post stuff in Opinion just to advertise their own blog.
Opinion is also for your own original articles, for everyone, but especially for Rantburg regulars. If you have an opinion, post it there. And don't forget your byline.
  • Please format the post. That means, help us make the post readable. Think of it as a chance to teach English composition to the MSM. Delete the fluff and the stuff we already know. If there are no line breaks, put them in. If there are too many line breaks, take some out. Some sources (e.g., BBC) think that each and every sentence should be a new paragraph. Other sources (e.g., myway.ap.news) think that an entire story is a single paragraph, three pages long. Some gentle editing to make a post readable really helps all of us, especially the moderators who then don't have to go back and re-edit stuff.

  • Your comments are in highlight (yellow) text. Start your comments on a separate line. Don't put a leading line space before or after.

  • Strikout text can be placed in-line in the text. Some here complain when we use too much of it. Unless you've got a sure-fire 'mad-libs' winner, use strikeout text sparingly.

  • Images: 250 pixels width for portrait, 300 for landscape or square.

  • Please compress. I know it's not always possible, but images should be under 20k. It's not the single image we have to worry about, but 80 articles x 20k. Too many images will slow page load dramatically.

  • On a case-by-case basis, max 600 pixels (width of the yellow comments box) wide for charts, diagrams, and maps.

  • I'd love to allow users to upload images, but if I did we'd be dumping 100k erectile dysfunction ads and pictures of nekkid 40-year-old teen hotties all day and not have time for any posting of our own.

  • And as always, thanks for all your support. You make Rantburg a special place.

#1  thanks for the reminder, last week I buried my URL, oops.

#2  Please repost the size limits (in pixels) for images.

A personal request: When cutting and pasting entire articles or large excerpts, please proofread your text for (now irrelevant) photo captions, text insets, (now dead) link indicators and useless prompts like ADVERTISMENT.

I'd also like to use this opportunity to give thanks and high praise for the overall quality found here. The level of scathing retort and badly needed deconstruction warranted by so much modern reportage does not make for an easy job of herding the Rantburg cats moderating this site. So, on that note, thank you very much, Rantburg Moderators, for your fine work. I'd especially like to direct specific honors to Badanov for his inestimable help in making this site far more resistant to spam-bots and DOS attacks. They seem to have dropped off rather dramatically since that last major overhaul. Finally, thank you, Fred. Rantburg is a shining beacon of free speech in an ever more politically correct world. It is nothing short of a profound personal relief to read plainspoken dissection of the misinformation, intentional obsfucation and outright lies being spewed forth by the media, socialists and NGOs.

Even if all of the above didn't measure up, Rantburg's premium quality snark would be worth the price of admission alone. [looks over at Fred and tu3031]

#3  Also, rather than just post an http address in a comment and force me to decide whether or not to expend the extra erg to cut-n-paste it to see what is there, why not make it a link?

    How do you do this?

    1) Write a few descriptive words of what your link is about (even in the middle of a sentence!)

    2) Highlight them

    3) Click the 'Link' button you'll find below the text box

    4) Plop the http address of the link into the popup box and hit 'OK'. You should overwrite the 'HTTP://' that you find there because it is just an example/reminder.

    5) Hit 'OK'. Finish perfecting your comment and hit 'Submit Query'. You'll see that those words magically take on the properties of a link.

Pretty cool, eh? Much more professional and preserves the flow of your comment/rant/snark! :-)

    Afghanistan
Bomb on bus kills at least 10 in Afghan capital
KABUL - A bomb attack on a bus carrying Afghan army troops in the capital Kabul on Saturday killed at least 10 people, a Reuters witness said.

Police at the scene initially said it was a suicide bomb attack, but one official said it could have been caused by a large land mine. “I think it was a mine,” Deputy Interior Minister Mohammad Munir Mangal told Reuters at the scene. “There are reports of another blast in the city, but it has not yet been confirmed.”

The bus was completely destroyed by the blast and shop windows were shattered all around. Residents helped police pick up pieces of flesh and put them into plastic bags. ”The explosion happened just after a group of Afghan National Army soldiers got onto the bus,” said witness Mohammad Zaher who had cuts in his forehead from flying glass.

    Africa North
Port of Alexandria, Egypt joins "US Container Security Initiative"
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on Friday announced that the port of Alexandria, Egypt, became the 58th operational Container Security Initiative (CSI) port to target and pre-screen maritime cargo containers destined for U.S. ports.

"Preventing the smuggling of illicit nuclear weapons and radiological materials remains CBPs highest priority," said CBP Commissioner W. Ralph Basham. "CSI is a brilliant idea that serves the interests of both business and security. Through the workings of CSI, we must and will achieve our collective twin goals of security and trade facilitation." U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the government of Egypt co-signed the Declaration of Principles to bring the CBP Container Security Initiative to the port of Alexandria on June 22, 2006. CSI, launched months after the Sept.11, 2001, terrorist attacks, is a cooperative effort with host country governments to identify and screen high-risk shipments before they leave participating ports.

More than 85 percent of all cargo containers destined for U.S. shores originate in or are trans-shipped through 58 CSI ports in North, South and Central America, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

    Bangladesh
B'desh police break up Islamist protest
Around 2,000 Muslim protesters took to the streets of the Bangladesh capital Dhaka on Friday, angered by the publication of a cartoon they say offended their religion.

Witnesses said police wielding batons broke up the protest, which started outside the city’s Baitul Mokarram mosque after Friday prayers. Bangladesh is under the emergency rule, and all protests are banned. Outrage erupted two weeks ago when Prothom Alo’s satire magazine Alpin printed the cartoon.

“We do not have any political motive. We are here only to protest against those who offended our religion,” said a leader of Hizb-ut-Tahir, an Islamist group, that led the protest. The government has already banned the publication of the magazine and arrested the cartoonist Arifur Rahman. The newspaper has also apologised and appealed for forgiveness.

The protesters said it was a deliberate attempt by the cartoonist to ridicule Islam’s Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and thus the editor and the publisher of the newspaper should be arrested. They also demanded the closure of the newspaper.

    Europe
Italy: Tunisian deportee to face 20 year jail term, rights group says
(AKI) - A Tunisian citizen facing deportation from Italy after being cleared of terrorism charges would face 20 years in prison if sent home, a human rights organisation has claimed. Campaign group Human Rights Watch has attacked the Italian government saying Tunisian citizen Nassim Saadi would face the lengthy jail sentence because he was convicted in absentia in Tunisia for incitement to terrorism.
If he's a terrorist, a 20 year sentence sounds a little .. light. And he could have stayed home to fight in court. Sounds like he wants to enjoy la dulce vita whilst spreading jihad.
"Instead of sending people back to face ill-treatment, Rome should put pressure on Tunis to stop abusing prisoners," said Julia Hall senior Europe and Central Asia researcher at Human Rights Watch. "Sending people back to risk ill-treatment undermines fundamental European values."
So they don't know for certain that Nassim will get thumped in Tunisia, it's just a 'risk'.
Human Rights Watch last week sent a letter to the Italian Minister of Justice Clemente Mastella, in which it expressed concern about the Italian government's reliance on diplomatic assurances from Tunisia to treat Nassim humanely.

Nassim, who lives in Milan, was declared not guilty of association with international terrorism in 2005 in Italy, but was convicted of criminal conspiracy and forgery. In Tunisia he was convicted in absentia of being a member of a terrorist organisation operating abroad for incitement to terrorism.

Italian Interior Minister Giuliano Amato ordered the "fast-track" deportation of Nassim - a special procedure for terrorism-related cases that denies suspects the right to remain in Italy, while their appeal against deportation is considered.

The United Nations committee against torture has harshly criticised Italy's policy for lacking protection against returns to torture.
It's easy to criticize Y'urp-peons, they just quiver in response.
Nassim had appealed to the European Court of Human Rights, claiming he risks torture if returned to his home country. The court subsequently requested that Italy suspend the deportation until a final judgement in the case is made. The Italian government on the other hand, argued before the court in July 2007 that the Tunisian government promised to treat Saadi humanely, thereby reducing the risk of ill-treatment.
Just you wait til Carla del Ponte hears of this ...

#3  Since Julia is so hyped up about his alledged problems in Tunisia, maybe she should go in his place. I'm sure the Tunisians won't care much. I think 20 years in a Tunisian prison will give her a much better insight into "human rights".

List of politicians as possible attack targets surfaces in Austria
Austrian authorities have found a list of politicians circulated online as potential targets for attacks, an Interior Ministry spokesman said Friday. But, while they notified the people on the list, they said there were no indications any of them were ever in danger. Authorities found the list during an investigation of a video posted online in March threatening Austria and Germany with attacks if they did not withdraw military personnel from Afghanistan, said Rudolf Gollia, the Interior Ministry spokesman.

    Home Front: WoT
Terry Nichols' Declaration About the Oklahoma City Bombing
After the Oklahoma City bombing on April 19, 1995, Terry Nichols was convicted on August 9, 2004, for collaborating with Timothy McVeigh to commit the crime. Nichols was sentenced to life in prison. On February 9, 2007, he wrote a Declaration detailing his knowledge about the plot. The Declaration was obtained by J. M. Berger, who made it public on his excellent website Intelwire on September 21, 2007.

Nichols writes in his Declaration that he now wants “to identify others who played a role in the bombing” but he has “been frustrated in this effort by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Federal Bureau of Prisons and Department of Justice.”

He writes that his trips to the Philippines in the months preceeding the bombing had nothing to do with the plot. Furthermore, he went to the Philippines in November 1994 and stayed there until January 1995 in order to be far away with a good alibi, because he expected McVeigh to blow up a target during that period.

#7  Re #3: And your proof that he's telling the truth is what, precisely?

This declaration is evidence that we can evaluate in the context of other evidence. And then we can make a more informed decision about what to believe.
    Posted by: Mike Sylwester || 09/29/2007 18:16 Comments || Top||

#8  Dunno if I buy this - my first thought on reading this is that he hopes to point any future investigations, whether official or unofficial, in the wrong direction. IIRC, Philippine military intelligence unequivocally stated its belief that Nichols came to PI to learn bombmaking techniques from Muslim terrorists in the south of the country. And guess who said Filipino Muslims are affiliated with? Three guesses and the first two don't count.

McVeigh's a riddle, though; I don't know if anyone will ever figure out his actual role in all of this. This guy was definitely not your average redneck militia type. COL David Hackworth interviewed him in prison, and also got a look at his service records - Hack wrote that McVeigh "tested off the charts" on his ASVABs. I've read other accounts indicating McVeigh turned fanatically pro-Arab after the Gulf War; plus there's the question of "John Doe No. 2", who looked one hell of a lot like Jose Padilla (aka Dirty Bomb Boy).

#9  However, you really haven't given us any 'evidence' to judge at all.

There is no information as to the provenance of this alleged Declaration. Exactly where was it procured, by whom, when and how can that be verified? Note that the links you provide don't go to Berger's site, but to the Wikipedia entry for Nichols.

Wikipedia as a source document is .... unconvincing.

All I see are allegations based on undocumented assertions which have no depth, validation or supporting evidence to bolster their claim to credibility.

That's the usual modus operandi of conspiracy theories, not "evidence".

#12  and your proof that it is information instead of misinformation is what, exactly?

Wise up. True or false, it still represents information that requires investigation, especially so due to its detailed nature. Whether it is of any use is for some intelligence analysts to determine.

my first thought on reading this is that he hopes to point any future investigations, whether official or unofficial, in the wrong direction. IIRC, Philippine military intelligence unequivocally stated its belief that Nichols came to PI to learn bombmaking techniques from Muslim terrorists in the south of the country.

Which occurred to me as well.

#18  So ... I'm following the OK bombing conspiracy sites for the first time. Help me out here.

The Nichols affidavit was released due to a FOIA filing by Jessee Trentadue, who suspects his brother was murdered in prison rather than having killed himself. There are a plethora of sites making pretty strong claims about the manner of his death. I did note that the DOJ investigation, which concluded that both the OK bureau of prisons and the FBI had bungled things, also came down firmly on the side of suicide.

Now, I gather that the imputed reason the Trentadue brother was murdered is supposed to be that he was writing a tell-all book about his 23 month prison acquaintance with McVeigh.

And the 'explosive' details that book would reveal is that McVeigh told that one or more top government officials for whom he worked secretly told him to plan and carry out the bombing.

And here the allegations about who was an informer/agent for whom get pretty ... Byzantine. Or baroque.

There's McVeigh, who in addition to be a white supremacist and bank robber is variously alleged to really have been a top soldier involved with Iran-Contra, still working secretly for a DOD handler (or is it CIA? or FBI? sources seem to vary on this).

There's the gun & explosives dealer Moore, who Nichols says cooperated with McVeigh to stage a robbery of his own guns etc. I gather he too is alleged by some to have actually been a government informer (FBI? ATF?). As were half the members at the Elohim compound, the white supremacist community in rural OK some of whose members played a supporting role in the plot, if you believe the online speculations.

And McVeigh was, by some accounts, not only a top soldier executing secret orders from a DOD/CIA handler but also/alternately taking orders that came directly from the deputy director of the FBI to bomb the courthouse specifically.

And Nichols says that McVeigh manipulated him and lied to him about various details of his intentions, whereabouts during the Moore robbery, etc.

I can easily see the members of this little underworld spinning cover stories, hinting at their connections, lying to one another, etc. How much of it was based on reality is quite a different issue.

But let's say that there was some slimy behavior on the part of one or more government officials. Has anyone actually come up with a motivation for the deputy director of the FBI to plan and direct the destruction of that federal courthouse?

Yeah, Nichols probably went to the Phillipines to learn bombmaking. And yeah, the antisemitic White Supremacists probably got their jollies from some association with the antisemitic Muslims there. After all, in the Phillipines they were actually in revolt and in quasi-combat engagements, whereas the Elohim crowd were wannabes. Probably hoped the mana would rub off on him.

But in any case, suppose Jesse T. somehow forces the FBI to find documents that are referenced but not turned over in the FOIA discovery. Even if such documents were found and turned over and hinted or outright alleged involvement in the bombing by some senior federal official, it's almost beyond belief to suppose that there would be corroborating evidence to back up those allegations.

Indeed, on Nichols' own account (if you believe him this time around) McVeigh deliberately misled him even while they were working together. Why would any putative allegations in any documents that might get found have any credibility? What sort of 'evidence' would such allegations provide?

I cannot for the life of me imagine that Trentadue will do more than, maybe, provide some detail to the DOJ's critical comments re: FBI and Bureau of Prisons handling of the investigation into his brother's case.

And if there is some association with Padilla, I think it will be a cold day in Hell before we find it out, no matter who gets elected next year.

So, folks .... what have I missed about Nichols' declaration and impending interview that suggests we might get more insight into that whole OK bombing mess? I confess I've stayed away from the conspiracy and other sites on this one, so perhaps I've overlooked some important thread ???

#19  One detail I picked up that really might explain a whole lot of the hints about secret government plots, DOD/CIA/FBI handlers etc:

The summary of McVeigh's trial indicates he and his associates were methamphetamine users (and some associates were manufacturers/dealers too).

Meth is pretty well documented to induce and intensify paranoid thinking.

It would be ironic if, in the end, the reality were that all of the hints and allegations McVeigh made were the outgrowth of that meth use, combined with whatever other toxic influences sent him into the white supremacist / survivalist movement.

It would be even more ironic, but not particularly surprising, if all the FBI lapses used to bolster conspiracy theories regarding the bombing turned out to be garden variety bumbling by field agents combined with a lot of CYA.

RE: Oklahoma City Bomb, same opinion

Most folks believe there were other perps who helped Tim McVeigh with the Oklahoma City Bomb.

¿So Why execute Tim McVeigh when only Tim McVeigh knew who they were?

¿What's so wrong with postponing his death like we do with every other convicted Murder 1 prisoner condemned to death?

#25  Ok, I'm seeing the shape of the argument now.

It was what, about 23 months or so between conviction and execution? IIRC he didn't contest the charges, just pled necessity due to Waco. But then the FBI realized they hadn't given Nichols all their documents (Freeh had to go redfaced to congress on that) & McVeigh's lawyers appealed up to SCOTUS, who refused to hear the appeal.

So maybe a coverup. Or maybe understandable since McVeigh never denied he'd built and detonated the bomb, SCOTUS refused the appeal and there were 160 dead people for which the American public wanted some action.

Dunno. As with most things Clintonian, probably obfuscated beyond recovery.

Re #18: I gather that the imputed reason the Trentadue brother was murdered is supposed to be that he was writing a tell-all book about his 23 month prison acquaintance with McVeigh.

McVeigh told his own story in the book American Terrorist, and this should be the primary book to be read by anyone who wants to study this crime.

I doubt that McVeigh told some different story to any fellow prisoner in the systematic manner alleged by David Paul Hammer, who could have concocted such a book from other publicly available materials.

There is no doubt, however, that Terry Nichols has personal knowledge of the plot. This Declaration deserves attention.

With regard to the suspicion that Nichols went to the Phillipines in order to meet with Moslem terrorists, I wrote a series of articles about that here.

#34  Re #8: Philippine military intelligence unequivocally stated its belief that Nichols came to PI to learn bombmaking techniques from Muslim terrorists in the south of the country.

I don't think that Nichols brought information and bomb materials from the Philippines to the USA. Rather, I supsect he intended to make a lot of money by taking information and bomb materials from to the USA to the Philippines.

Nichols was broke, was stealing lots of explosives and weapons in the USA, and was traveling to the Philippines. This situation presented money-making possibilities that Nichols probably recognized.

If he did become involved with Moslem radicals in the Philippines, I think he did it without McVeigh's participation or even knowledge. Nichols was interested primarily in making money for himself and his family, a goal of no interest to McVeigh. Why should Nichols let McVeigh intrude into and perhaps take over Nichols' own money-making schemes.

If Nichols could predict to Moslem contacts there that the courthouse in Oklahoma City would be blown up on a particular day, his knowledge and credibility might become very valuable to those contacts.

If Moslem radicals were present at the Murrah building when it exploded, I think they were there only to observe, based on a tip they received from Nichols. I don't think they planted explosives in the building to help the blast McVeigh detonated from the Ryder truck.

    India-Pakistan
Twelve tourists injured in Maldives explosion
MALE (Reuters) - Twelve tourists were injured in a suspected bomb explosion on Saturday in the Maldives' capital, Male, local media and a witness said. The blast occurred near a mosque at the entrance to the capital's Sultan Park, a stop-off for tour groups in the capital.
Somebody doesn't like tourists defiling their holy mosque?
In London, the British Foreign Office said the explosion was caused by a bomb and two Britons were among the injured. "We have been informed that two Britons were injured. It was a bomb blast outside the main mosque at Male," a spokesman said. News media in the Indian Ocean archipelago said a Japanese and eight Chinese tourists were injured.

Some local media said the explosion was triggered by a home-made device using a mobile phone and washing machine motor attached to a gas cylinder. A witness said he saw nails scattered in the park before the area was cleared by security personnel. The park is in the shadow of the Maldives army headquarters, and several surveillance cameras are trained on the area.

More than 500,000 tourists visited the Maldives last year, and the tourist industry is the linchpin of the country's $1 billion economy.
    Bingo
The Muslim country has a reputation for tranquillity and the capital has not witnessed gunfire or explosions since an attempted coup in 1998.
Well, so much for that tranquillity. Can't be having that in a Muslim counrty now, can we? It's unIslamic.

#2  I did an evaluation of the Maldives after the 2006 tsunami that swept over the islands. There are about 80 islands, ranging in size from a few dozen square miles to a few acres each. Some of the main islands were heavily inhabited, while others were sparsely settled. The damage to several of the islands was pretty extensive, but the coral reefs limited damage to others. I think the availability of drinking water is more a restriction on population than land area. Many of the smaller islands have NO fresh water at all.

#5  In response to #3, yes there is reasonably high rainfall in the Maldives but the islands themselves are very low-lying and don't have the topography to support a fresh water table or runoff reserves. For water in those conditions, you have to build cisterns and bring in fresh water whenever you can - just like you have to do in many of the Caribbean island chains.

Hurriyat activist sentenced to jail for receiving funds from Pakistan
NEW DELHI: A city court here on Friday sentenced Hurriyat activist Zamrooda Habib Anjum to five-year imprisonment under a stringent anti-terrorist law for receiving money “intended to be used for terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir” from the Pakistan High Commission (PHC) in February 2003. Additional Sessions Judge Ravinder Kaur held Zamrooda guilty of accepting more than Rs 300,000 from the then Pakistan Deputy High Commissioner Jalil Abbas Jilani “to be used for terrorist activities in J&K”.

The court also refused to entertain a defence plea that the Hurriyat Conference was a political organisation. It also rejected the pleas seeking leniency for Zamrooda for her being a political activist. Earlier, making a last-ditch effort after being convicted, a visibly depressed Zamrooda pleaded for leniency in the sentence. She told the judge that she had suffered a lot and committed no crime. “I have suffered in jail for the last four years and eight months and my health has also deteriorated,” she said. Judge Ravinder Kaur said that a five-year imprisonment was the least punishment under the Prevention of Terrorist (activities) Act.

US drone 'shot down' in N Waziristan
A US drone was reportedly shot down in North Waziristan and local residents seized the sensitive espionage paraphernalia onboard, security officials told Daily Times on Friday.
Such planes fly constantly over North and South Waziristan and use state-of–the-art equipment to track down Al Qaeda and Taliban elements.
Remains of the small plane were seen 25 kilometres west of Miranshah on the Dattakhel-Miranshah road near Land Muhammadkhel village, the officials said.

Military spokesman Maj Gen Waheed Arshad confirmed the incident. “The likely cause of the crash [is] technical malfunction. The local residents have seized the equipment onboard the plane,” he said.

Iraq's Sunnis and Shi'ites sign up in Qaeda battleground

TUWAITHA, Iraq (Reuters) - Hundreds of Sunni Arab men, and a smattering of Shi'ites, have begun signing up for local tribal police units in areas southeast of Baghdad where pitched battles were fought with al Qaeda only weeks ago.

In one rural area not far from the Tuwaitha nuclear plant, idle after Saddam Hussein's atomic energy programme was shut down following the 1991 Gulf War, about 30 young Iraqi men queued patiently in the ruins of a bombed-out watchtower.

The tower stands at an odd angle in a field next to a narrow road along the Tigris River. U.S. soldiers in humvees bounced along the road, over one repaired section where they said a bomb detonated by al Qaeda in Iraq militants left a 15-foot crater.

Further on, date palms stand next to a gutted power station, their trunks blackened by the explosion and fire.

"I'm not afraid. I'm wanted by al Qaeda anyway," Mahmoud Jablawi, a Sunni Arab sheikh in the town of Tuwaitha, said when asked about the dangers of working with the U.S. military, which organised a visit to the area on Thursday for Reuters.

Apologising for his limp handshake -- he said he was shot in the arm in a gunbattle with al Qaeda three weeks ago -- Jablawi said two of his brothers had been killed in the past two weeks.

"We don't want to live in an Islamic country the way the Taliban live," he said of al Qaeda's strict version of Islam.

In Tuwaitha, 256 young men have joined a "concerned citizens" group, one of the latest examples of tribal police units based on the "Awakening" model established in western Anbar, once the most dangerous province in Iraq Continued...

More Background on the Offing of Charlie the Tuna
The U.S. military released a handwritten note that it said was found on the site where Tunisi was killed in which he describes himself as being "surrounded" for 2 1/2 months. Anderson said the note was indicative of an organization in disarray.

"They are very broken up, very unable to mass, and conducting very isolated operations," he said. "And I think what that little note says is that he was very desperate; he wasn't getting the materials, the supplies, the guidance information; anything he needed."

Tunisi -- one of about six to 10 top leaders of al-Qaeda in Iraq -- oversaw the movement of foreign fighters into Iraq as well as their operations, which account for more than 80 percent of the suicide bombings in Iraq, Anderson said. But he added that the flow of fighters -- until recently between 60 and 80 a month -- had been cut in half because of tighter controls by Iraqi border guards working with U.S. teams.

The military said Tunisi's group was responsible for capturing and killing Pfc. Kristian Menchaca and Pfc. Thomas L. Tucker south of Baghdad on June 16, 2006. The bodies of the two soldiers were found mutilated and booby-trapped three days later along with that of Spec. David J. Babineau, who was killed at a checkpoint

#1  Counter Terrorism Blog has more insight:

Oddly enough, this is not the first time that Abu Usama al-Tunisi has been reported killed. Over a year ago (in May 2006), Al-Qaida supporters posted online announcements declaring the "martyrdom" of Abu Usama al-Tunisi. The news of al-Tunisi's death was distributed on, among other places, the highly credible Al-Hesbah Islamic Network--which has been directly endorsed in past propaganda films produced by Al-Qaida in Iraq. According to that announcement

    [..]

This naturally leads us to the problem of addressing this obvious discrepancy. Is it possible that there are two separate Abu Usama al-Tunisis serving as commanders for Al-Qaida in Iraq? Perhaps... but the likelihood of this incredible coincidence rapidly plummets when one considers that both of these men have been identically described as the commander of Al-Qaida's Aeisha Brigade and active in the area of al-Yusifiya. If we put aside this theory, we are left with quite limited possibilities. It would seem that either Al-Qaida supporters were engaged in a deliberate misinformation campaign on their own password-protected chat forums, or else the U.S. military has potentially been the victim of questionable intelligence. It should be further noted that Al-Qaida has prided itself in the past on providing accurate and timely information concerning the "martyrdom" of its military commanders. When former Al-Qaida commander Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed in a U.S. airstrike in mid-2006, the same Al-Hesbah Network was one of the first sources to correctly confirm the news of his death on behalf of Al-Qaida.

U.S. Air Force F-16 Air strike kills 3 terrorist leaders
A U.S. Air Force F-16CJ Fighting Falcon dropped precision munitions near Al Nussayyib, Iraq Sept. 25, killing Abu Nasr al-Tunisi and two other Al Q’aeda in Iraq operatives.

They were killed when the aircraft, assigned to U.S. Central Command Air Forces, dropped two laser guided 500 lb Joint Direct Attack Munition GBU-12 bombs, destroying the terrorist safe house where the three were meeting. “Air power is crucial to setting the conditions for stability in Iraq,” said Lt General Gary L. North, Combined Air Forces Component Commander.

He continued with, “Air power overhead provides capability to the fight with precision targeting which was used on Tuesday to ensure these individuals could no longer target innocent Iraq citizens.”

Iraqi Army, U.S. Special Operations Forces detain 17 suspected terrorists, kill three armed insurgents
Iraqi Army soldiers, with U.S. Special Operations Forces as advisers, detained 17 suspected terrorists during two raids Sept. 27 in Northern Iraq.

In an early operation, Iraqi Army Scouts conducted a series of intelligence-driven helicopter assault raids southwest of Taji, resulting in the detention of an al-Qaeda in Iraq cell leader and 14 others suspected of conducting recent attacks against Coalition Forces.

The terrorist cell is believed to be responsible for the deaths of two Coalition Forces members during an Aug. 15 rocket and mortar attack against a forward operating base in Taji. The cell is also suspected of conducting a small-arms and rocket attack Feb. 25 against a U.S. Army UH-60, which resulted in an emergency landing and recovery operation. In addition, they are allegedly responsible for transporting weapons and facilitating foreign fighters.

In a separate operation, Soldiers from the 4th Iraqi Army Division detained two suspected terrorists during an intelligence-driven raid near Bayji. The Soldiers detained the targeted individual who is allegedly responsible for making improvised explosive devices and targeting Iraqi and U.S. Forces operating in the Bayji area.

Additionally, the assault force detained one individual suspected of assassinating an Iraqi Police officer.

En route to the targeted area, an improvised explosive device detonated between two of the assault force vehicles. The shrapnel from the IED hit several vehicles, but all were operational and the forces continued the mission.

In another operation, an air weapons team supporting U.S. Special Operations Forces in the Diyala Province, near Dali Abbas village, killed three enemy combatants Sept. 27. Three individuals carrying weapons were observed by the air weapons team as they maneuvered toward a landing zone being used by U.S. Special Forces Soldiers. The air weapons team engaged the armed individuals, killing them.

Coalition forces capture wanted terrorist, detain six suspects
Coalition forces captured a wanted suspected terrorist and detained six other suspects during operations Friday to disrupt al-Qaeda in Iraq operations in the Tigris River Valley.

Coalition forces captured a suspected terrorist in Bayji believed to be associated with al-Qaeda in Iraq and have a significant role in recent attacks in the city. Intelligence led the ground force to his exact location where he identified himself and was captured without incident.

In two precision operations in Tarmiyah and Baghdad, Coalition forces detained three suspected terrorists during raids targeting individuals reported to be key communications links to al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leaders and their associates in and outside the country. Also in Baghdad, Coalition forces targeted an individual believed to be involved in attacks on Coalition forces in the area. Three suspected terrorists were detained on site. “We’re steadily chipping away at the al-Qaeda in Iraq network,” said Maj. Winfield Danielson, MNF-I spokesman. “The disruption to their operations and supply of information hinders al-Qaeda in Iraq’s ability to attack innocent Iraqis.”

Turkey, Iraq sign security accord without clause on rebel Kurds
Turkey and Iraq signed on Friday a security anti-terrorism accord that did not include an article on Turkish military operations against rebel Kurds in northern Iraq.

The agreement was signed by Iraqi Interior Minister Jawad Al-Bolani and Turkish counterpart Besir Atalay.

Although grueling talks were held for three days, the two sides did not agree on allowing Turkish troops to penetrate into northern Iraq to crack down members of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

During a joint press conference after signing the deal, Atalay said "It was not possible to reach a deal on chasing Kurdish rebels. However, we hope this issue will be solved in the future." He noted, "We are expecting this cooperation against terrorism to be broadened as much as possible." The accord also included holding follow-up meetings every six months, as well as forming a joint liaison bureau to monitor PKK activities, added Atalay. Iraqi Kurds rejected adding another article stipulating handing over PKK leaders to Turkish authorities.

    Sri Lanka
Sri Lankan air force bomb LTTE sea tiger base
Colombo, Sept. 29 (PTI): Sri Lankan air force today pounded a LTTE position in the north west of the country besides killing three rebels in Vavuniya, defence ministry officials said. "Sea tiger base popularly known to Sea Tigers as 'Lima Two' base located at Thevipuram in the North West of Puthukudiyirippu area was pounded by air force fighter jets this morning," Air Force spokesman A D'silva told PTI. The Air Force believes that the air strike was a success inflicting severe damage to the LTTE Sea Tiger Base, he said, adding the video clippings suggested the loss for the LTTE was huge.

There was no immediate reaction from the LTTE. D'silva said the intelligence agencies were still assessing the extent of damage. The Kfir and Mig fighter jets of the Air Force were involved in the air sorties on the Sea Tiger training base in Thevipuram, D'silva said.

Meanwhile, according to the army, its troops during the past 24 hours, beginning last morning, confronted Tiger rebels at several places in Vavuniya in Northern part of the country killing at least three rebels and inflicting heavy damages to the group. In Ampara, the Special Task Force conducted search operations and recovered arms, satellite receivers, electric generators and satellite antennas, an army official said. In Mannar, the army confiscated a vehicle carrying 180 kg of Gelignite which was concealed in it.

In another search operations, the army said it recovered several anti-personnel mines at Kallikulam area in Vayuniya.

    Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran's Parliament Signs Resolution to Label CIA, Army as 'Terrorist Organizations'
Iran's parliament on Saturday approved a nonbinding resolution labeling the CIA and the U.S. Army "terrorist organizations," in apparent response to a Senate resolution seeking to give a similar designation to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The hard-line dominated parliament cited U.S. involvement in dropping nuclear bombs in Japan in World War II, using depleted uranium munitions in the Balkans, Afghanistan and Iraq, supporting the killings of Palestinians by Israel, bombing and killing Iraqi civilians, and torturing terror suspects in prisons.

"The aggressor U.S. Army and the Central Intelligence Agency are terrorists and also nurture terror," said a statement by the 215 lawmakers who signed the resolution at an open session of the Iranian parliament. The session was broadcast live on state-run radio.

The resolution, which is seen as a diplomatic offensive against the U.S., urges Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's government to treat the two as terrorist organizations. It also paves the way for the resolution to become legislation that — if ratified by the country's hardline constitutional watchdog — would become law. The government is expected to wait for U.S. reaction before making its decision.

On Wednesday, the Senate voted 76-22 in favor of a resolution urging the State Department to designate Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organization. While the proposal attracted overwhelming bipartisan support, a small group of Democrats said they feared labeling the state-sponsored organization a terrorist group could be interpreted as a congressional authorization of military force in Iran.

The Bush administration had already been considering whether to blacklist an elite unit within the Revolutionary Guard, subjecting part of the vast military operation to financial sanctions.

The U.S. legislative push came a day after Ahmadinejad told world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly that his country would defy attempts to impose new sanctions by "arrogant powers" seeking to curb its nuclear program, accusing them of lying and imposing illegal penalties on his country.

He said the nuclear issue was now "closed" as a political issue and Iran would pursue the monitoring of its nuclear program "through its appropriate legal path," the International Atomic Energy Agency, which is the U.N.'s nuclear watchdog.

Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have escalated over Washington accusations that Iran is secretly trying to develop nuclear weapons and has been supplying Shiite militias in Iraq with deadly weapons used to kill U.S. troops. Iran denies both of the allegations.

Muslim cleric suspected of smuggling fighters to Iraq shot dead in Syria
A Sunni Muslim cleric who in the past has been suspected of recruiting militants to fight in Iraq was shot dead as he left a mosque after Friday prayers in the northern city of Aleppo, an aide said. Mohammed Gul Aghassi, 34, was instantly killed by a gunman who pumped five bullets into his body as he left the Imam Mosque where he regularly preaches after the noon prayers.

Additional: The Reputed Mentor of Fatah al-Islam and other notorious Islamist terrorists operating in Lebanon and Iraq was gunned down in Syria Friday. Mahmoud Gul Aghasi, a Kurd who goes by the name of Abu al-Qaaqaa, was killed by a gunman who stepped out of a car and opened fire at him from an automatic weapon as he walked out of a mosque in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo after Friday noon prayers, according to an Agence France Presse report attributed to witnesses and medical sources.

Aghasi was hit in the head and stomach and passed away a few hours later in Aleppo's al Shaaba hospital, according to a medical source at the hospital. Three people with him were wounded in the attack. Witnesses said one of his attackers was detained by Aghasi's followers.

Al-Qaaqaa was known for his anti-American views and recordings calling for holy war against U.S. forces, and had set up a group which recruited young men to fight coalition forces in Iraq. He had recently fallen foul of fellow jihadists, however, for allegedly colluding with the Syrian regime of President Bashar Assad, and several extremist websites had called for his assassination.

Al-Qaaqaa, according to reliable sources, was responsible for preaching the radical doctrine to Jihadi recruits at a camp in Syria before dispatching them to fight in Iraq, and most recently in Lebanon. The sources said al-Qaaqaa was the God Father of Fatah al-Islam militants and their terrorist mastermind Shaker Abssi, who remains at large in north Lebanon after the army finished off his group in a 106-day battle in Nahr a-Bared on Set. 2.
