Bangladesh
2 criminals killed in shootouts
[Bangla Daily Star] Two criminals were killed in "crossfire" and two police constables sustained injuries in separate incidents of gunfight with law enforcers in the capital and Pabna early yesterday. The deceased were Mohammad Masud Hasan, 26, of Louhajang upazila under Munshiganj and Atiqul Islam, 35, of Badalgram village of Faridpur upazila in Pabna district.

Sources in Rab-10 said on information that a gang of criminals was preparing for committing a crime, they conducted a drive at Jurain Graveyard around 3:45am. Sensing trouble, the gang opened fire and hurled bombs on the elite force forcing them to retaliate.

Masud died on the spot while rest of the gang members escaped, said the sources, adding that the Rab team recovered a one-shooter gun and 13 bullets from the scene.

According to Rab and Shyampur police, Masud was a listed criminal and accused in five cases, including murder, extortion and arms dealing.

Meanwhile, Atiqul Islam, a leader of an outlawed organisation Bahini, was killed and two police constables were injured in a gunfight at Badalgram in Pabna district.

Police said a joint team of police and Rab raided Badalgram around 2:00am on information of a secret meeting of the outfit. As soon as the team reached the spot, the members of the group sprayed bullets on the law enforcers triggering a gun battle.

Atiq was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot, said police, adding that they recovered a gun and two bullets from the scene.

Police said Atiq was a convicted fugitive in four murder cases and wanted for several other offences.

Four Police killed by Chechen suicide bomber
Four policemen were killed by a suicide bomber Tuesday in southern Chechnya, the office of the Chechen president said. "At about 11 a.m. (3 a.m. ET) a man walked to a police SUV as it parked at a car service station and detonated an explosive device he was carrying," the president's office said.

Three of the policemen died instantly and a fourth was wounded. That officer died later at the hospital, the Chechen Interior Ministry told CNN. The bombing took place in the small village of Mesker-Yurt, 30 kilometers (18 miles) south of the republic's capital, Grozny.

Interior Minister Ruslan Alkhanov was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying that police had already identified the bomber in the wake of the attack. "He is Magomed Shakhidov, a 25-year-old former rebel who was jailed in 2004, and then joined the rebels again after being released from prison," the minister said.

Last week, two suicide bombers on bicycles killed four policemen and wounded another three in the streets of Grozny. That was the first time bicycles had been used in suicide bombing attacks in the restive Russian province.

Gitmo inmate freed without charge after 7 years
Mohammed Jawad, 19, one of the youngest detainees held at the United States prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, was released Monday and sent back to his native Afghanistan in the latest departure from the controversial prison that is set to close in five months. "Jawad was released and returned to Afghanistan today, ending nearly seven years of illegal detention by the United States," said Jonathan Hafetz, a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union.

Jawad's attorneys maintained he was just 12 years old upon arrival at the prison camp in southwest Cuba in 2002. The Pentagon says he was 16 or 17 when originally arrested in Afghanistan on charges of throwing a grenade at a U.S. convoy.

#4  Enemy combatants were handed habeas corpus rights by SCOTUS, a couple of years ago. But, cause for continued detainment is given an extremely low threshold. Any Arab caught in Afghanistan in 2001 or 2002, was a Wahabi terrorist. They had no other purpose other than to support Taliban/al-Qaeda.

It is unfortunate that some NATO allies think Taliban and al-Qaeda were and are separate entities. Al-Qaeda ut Jihad (Base of Jihad) was a mutual Pashtun/Arab creation, with Afghanistan being the base of global terror. Mullah Omar was title "Leader of (world) Muslims," and that was recognized by most in the Saud terrorist entity.

Afghan journalist shot dead in Khyber Agency
JAMRUD: Masked gunmen killed a senior Afghan journalist in Khyber Agency on Monday, in what appeared to be target killing, said witnesses. Janullah Hashimzada – Peshawar bureau chief of Kabul-based Shamshad TV – was en route to Peshawar from Torkhum when the gunmen stopped the passenger van he was travelling in and shot him in the head and neck, the driver of the vehicle, Abbas, told Daily Times.

“The masked men intercepted my van near Sur Kamar in Jamrud, and shot the journalist from close range,” said Abbas.

Jamrud Hospital sources said the journalist had been shot four times – twice in the head and as many times in the neck. The Khyber Union of Journalists, the Peshawar Press Club and the Tribunal of Journalists have condemned the killing of Janullah.

Pakistan police say militant cells raided
[Iran Press TV Latest] Pakistani police have arrested 13 insurgents accused of plotting terrorist attacks across the country and providing information on drug trafficking. Pakistani authorities said seven members of the banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi movement, were arrested in a raid in Karachi on Sunday. They were allegedly planning to attack government buildings and officials in the southern teeming port city with more than 16 million residents.

Pakistan blames the group for the bombing of Islamabad's Marriott Hotel last year that killed 60 people. The movement is also blamed for the beheading of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl.

Nearly 4.5 pounds (2 kilograms) of heroin and 33 pounds (15 kilograms) of explosives were seized in the raid, police said, adding that the terrorists provided clues to drug sales in Asia and the Persian Gulf.

Twin blasts kill 10 in southern Iraq
[Iran Press TV Latest] At least 10 Iraqis have been killed and another 19 wounded when bombs exploded in two buses near the southern city of Kut, police says.

Women and children were among the victims of the attacks on Monday, according to an AFP report. "Sticky bombs were attached to two buses and 10 people were killed," police lieutenant Mohammed Fadhil said. "Nineteen people were wounded."

The first bomb exploded around 15 kilometers (nine miles) north of Kut, causing eight deaths and leaving eight wounded, he added. According to Fadhil, the second blast occurred half an hour later about 40 kilometers north of the city, the regional capital of Wasit Province, leaving two dead and 11 wounded.

The explosions came less than a week after two massive truck bombs left at least 95 people dead and about 600 wounded in Baghdad.

Baghdad attackers paid $10,000 to pass checkpoints
A mastermind of last week's attacks in the heart of Baghdad's heavily guarded Green Zone says they paid $10,000 to get the bomb-laden trucks past the checkpoints.

In a video released on Iraqi television, the Iraqi military showed a Saddam Hussein loyalist on Iraq's national television who was apparently confessing to coordinating one of the two truck bombings that killed at least 101 people and injured hundreds of others in Baghdad last Wednesday.

Wissam Ali Kadhem, a former police chief, acknowledged plotting the attack and said that $10,000 was paid in bribes to checkpoint security staff in order to reach the Finance Ministry where the blast occurred.

Major General Qassim al-Moussawi, the Chief Military Spokesman for Baghdad said the man was a senior member of Saddam Hussein's ousted Baath Party. He said the culprit had confessed before his lawyer and judiciary officials to supervising the attack against the Finance Ministry.

At least 101 people were killed and hundreds of others were wounded in the series of mid-morning blasts, which coincided with the sixth anniversary of the deadly bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad.

Israeli forces kill Gazan man
Ma'an -- Israeli forces shot two Palestinians in the northern Gaza Strip on Monday afternoon, killing one of them.

The shooting took place in the Al-Atatra area north of the town of Beit Lahiya.

Mu'awiya Hassanein the head of Ambulance and Emergency Services in the Palestinian Health Ministry said that one critically injured man was taken in an ambulance to Kamal Udwan Hospital in northern Gaza.

Ambulances were unable to immediately reach the other man who lay on the ground bleeding and eventually died. Hassanein identified him as Ata Al-Hasoumi, 20. Medics told Reuters that the man was a farmer.

Israeli military sources told reporters that two "suspicious" people had approached the border with Israel and ignored warning shots.

Israel: Two rockets fired from Gaza
Ma'an -- Israeli sources said that two "rockets" were fired from the northern Gaza Strip on Monday evening. According to the news website Ynet, the projectiles landed near the Ashkelon Beach Regional Council. The same report states that one soldier was mildly wounded after sustaining a head injury while running for cover. It is unclear whether the projectiles were homemade "Al-Qassam" rockets, or mortar shells. No Palestinian group has claimed responsibility for the reported attack, which was the first in two weeks.

Car bomb at restaurant wounds 42 in southern Thailand
A powerful car bomb ripped through a restaurant packed with government officials in Thailand's troubled Muslim-majority south Tuesday, wounding at least 42 people, the army said. The blast was one of the most serious for months in the kingdom's insurgency-plagued provinces bordering Malaysia where a bloody separatist rebellion has been raging for more than five years.

The 50-kilogramme (110-pound) device was hidden inside a stolen Toyota pick-up truck and exploded during the busy lunch hour in the centre of Narathiwat, the main town in the province of the same name, officials said.

"It's very horrible. We had intelligence that militants would mount a large-scale attack," Lieutenant General Pichet Wisaichorn, the southern region army commander, told reporters. He said that seven of the 42 people injured in the blast were in a critical condition. Most of the wounded were Buddhist government officials, who are often targeted by the Islamist militants in the region. Police and rescue workers were rushing the wounded to hospital and the local government chief was among those injured, a policeman said on condition of anonymity.

The timing of the attack just after the start of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan was "very interesting", said Sunai Phasuk, an analyst for Human Rights Watch in Thailand. "We are in the holy month of Ramadan and the bomb went off clearly to harm the non-Muslim population," he told AFP.
