No, really? We had no idea, absolutely no idea, until the Amnesty announcement.
[Al Arabiya Latest] Amnesty International on Monday accused Sudan of using arrests and torture to brutally suppress dissent, days after an international court filed charges of genocide against President Omar al-Bashir.
The London-based group in a report entitled "Agents of Fear" accused Sudan's National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) of perpetrating institutionalized human rights violations "for years."
"The NISS rules Sudan by fear. The extensive, multi-pronged assault on the Sudanese people by the security services has left the critics of the government in constant fear of arrest, harassment or worse" said Erwin van der Borght, Amnesty's Africa program director.

LOL OP. That's not a troll, that's a stuck Spiro.
[The Nation (Nairobi)] The African Union has said the International Criminal court's warrant for the arrest of Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir would paralyse the ongoing efforts by AU and United Nations to bring peace and Justice in Sudan.
Peace and justice in Sudan? Whoa, did I miss something?
Last week, the ICC issued a second warrant for the arrest President Bashir. The ICC has accused President Bashir of war crimes and genocide in the Sudanese region of Darfur.
As a result of the earlier warrant, last month, Uganda refused to invite President Bashir to an African Union summit to avoid 'diplomatic embarrassment' if the ICC tried to arrest Bashir at the Kampala summit.
Iraq posed little threat to Britain just before the 2003 invasion -- but the danger of extremist attacks surged afterwards, a former head of the MI5 security service told an inquiry Tuesday. Eliza Manningham-Buller, chief of the domestic intelligence agency from 2002 to 2007, also dismissed any connection between Iraq and the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.
She was giving evidence at Britain's public inquiry into the war in Iraq, which has heard from figures including former prime minister Tony Blair, who was in power when the country joined the US-led invasion.
Manningham-Buller said that in 2002, MI5 had advised Blair's government that the "direct threat" from Iraq was "low". "We did think that Saddam Hussein might resort to terrorism in the theatre if he thought his regime was toppled but we didn't believe he had the capability to do anything in the UK," she said.
But MI5 "did not foresee" the number of Britons who became involved in extremist plots at home -- such as the July 7, 2005 bombings in London which killed 52 people -- following the conflict, she said.
"Our involvement in Iraq radicalised... a few among a generation -- who saw our involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan as being an attack on Islam," she said. "During 2003-04, we realised that the focus was not foreigners. The rising and increasing threat was a threat from British citizens and that was a very different scenario to, as it were, stopping people coming in."
She said MI5 was not "surprised" that British nationals were involved in terror plots. "There had been an increasing number of British born individuals... who were attracted to the ideology of Osama bin Laden and saw the West's activities in Iraq and Afghanistan as threatening their fellow religionists and the Muslim world," she said. "So it undoubtedly increased the threat."
Manningham-Buller also said there was "no credible intelligence" linking Iraq to the September 11 attacks. "There is no credible intelligence to suggest that connection. That was the judgment of the CIA. It was not a judgement that found favour in some parts of the American machine," she said.
She added that MI5 had been asked to contribute to the government's contentious 2002 dossier on Iraq's supposed weapons of mass destruction, but declined. "We were asked to put in some low-grade, small intelligence to it and we refused because we didn't think it was reliable," she said.
The probe is due to report by the end of the year and will hear from former United Nations weapons inspector Hans Blix as well as senior military figures next week.
As debate intensifies across Europe on banning the veil, a minister has defended a Muslim woman's right to wear the burqa and says it is empowering.
Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman said on Monday that women were "empowered" by the freedom to wear the face coverings.
Every picture of her on Google: not one in a burqa ...
Her comments came after her colleague, Immigration Minister Damian Green, resisted demands from within the Tory party to ban the burqa, according to Daily Mail. Green said a ban would be "rather un-British" and run contrary to the conventions of a "tolerant and mutually respectful society."

You have to be joking me. If she feels women are so empowered under sharia islam, send her on a six month sabbatical to mecca, at the tax payers expense.
#3
A "tolerant and mutually respectful society" where burkas are empowering, but piggy banks, pork pies, Christmas trees and decorations of red and green, church bells, guide dogs, alcohol hand gels, non-halal meals, Union Flag lapel badges, St George flags and crucifixes are "culturally insensitive" and not "inclusive", and cause "hurt feelings" to those who are empowered by wearing burkas and blowing up Tube trains.
#6
True empowerment is the freedom to do or not do whatever you want as long as no one else is harmed. A very unpopular outlook these days...

if Spelman thinks the burqa is so empowering, she should experience the empowerment first hand. Insist spelman wear a burqa for just 3 months. She may not leave the home without wearing it, lest she be beaten by her male relatives. Let her understand that choice is between harm and haram.
Let her feel empowered by no longer having to drive herself places. Driving is also haram for the burqa crowd. Burqas babes, often as not, are forbidden from leaving the house without a male escort. Any male - a two year-old will suffice.
Let her feel empowered by the beating she gets when she dares to reveal herself to any male or leaves the house without her burqa. Let her feel empowered by the sense of detachment, the difficulty of movement, the restriction of vision. let her embrace the empowerment of losing a full communication with others through the lack of facial expression. let no-one see her smile or her tears.
In the third month, let her forget to don her burqa for a quick trip to the store for milk - let her call it her choice. And have her face the same violent reaction - and possibly death - for "shaming" her family by appearing unveiled in public.
just 3 months, Caroline. let's see how "empowered by the burqa" you feel then. Understand that it is not a 'freedom' nor a 'choice' to live hidden under a burqa. It's wear-it-or-die. Burqa babes will say it is their choice to wear such a garment because to say anything else invites gross physical harm.
#8
Women feel empowered by the burqa in Afghanistan because in many parts of the country leaving the house without one is a death sentence. Thus, the burqa functions to allow a woman to walk in the streets, should her lord and master husband permit it. There should be no similar need in Britain.
#12
I think I understand much better as a result of actually visiting why a lot of Muslim women want to wear the burqa," she said.
Yeah - as others have said here, they wear the burqua because they don't want to be beaten, have acid thrown in their face, or be killed.

I was forced into watching that music channel and they had a "young people buck the system" show on, three youngsters in Saudi Arabia. One was a gal who decided to start a business which sold women's clothing in colors other than black. In a way, its empowering the women by giving them a choice in fabric color/design.
About a week after watching the program I heard she had been arrested, along with the other 2. Empowering, huh.
Hopefully I categorized this correctly under WoT Politix.
The United States is sending the aircraft carrier USS George Washington to South Korea this week in a display of "the strength of our alliance and our constant readiness to defend the Republic of Korea," the ship's commander said Monday.
The visit comes after months of heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula after the sinking of a South Korean warship in a torpedo attack in March. A multinational inquiry found North Korea responsible for the attack on the corvette Cheonan, in which 46 South Korean sailors were killed. North Korea has denied any connection with the attack and said it is the victim of an international conspiracy.
Earlier this month, the Useless Natterers United Nations debating club formally denounced the sinking of the Cheonan, but did not specifically mention North Korea.
In anticipation of the U.S. announcement, Pyongyang at the weekend said the presence of the carrier would be a "reckless provocation," according to the state-run Korean Central News Agency. It said the U.S. and South Korea were trying to save face after suffering a "diplomatic defeat" in the United Nations. Maybe the Norks could send out one of their latest midget subs or something. That'd show us.
Two U.S. destroyers will also join the George Washington for its call in the port of Busan. A third destroyer will visit Chinhae, U.S. Forces Korea said. The four-day port call begins Wednesday. And don't forget the fast attack subs! They're just itchin' for a fight right now I'll bet.
"The U.S. Navy maintains a robust forward presence in the Asia-Pacific region and the people of the Republic of Korea are our good friends and allies," George Washington commanding officer Capt. David Lausman said in a statement Monday.
The 97,000-ton George Washington, based in Yokosuka, Japan, is the only U.S. carrier whose home port is outside the United States.

[Al Arabiya Latest] Turkish prosecutors have indicted 196 people, including several former heads of service, over accusations they plotted a coup against the Islamist-rooted government, reports said on Monday.
According to the indictment cited by the Anatolia news agency, the plan was drawn up at the Istanbul base of the First Army shortly after the Justice and Development Party (AKP) came to power in November 2002.
The First Army's former top general Cetin Dogan is the chief suspect while former navy chief admiral Ozden Ornek, former air force commander general Halil Ibrahim Firtina, and the former number two of the general staff, retired general Ergin Saygun, are also among those charged.

and provoke tensions with Greece
That bit was overtaken by events. With all her economic problems, Greece can't afford to become tense about anything -- her budget has no room for adventuring.
#4
I thought part of the problem was that the various bits weren't connected properly, but that the other problem was that the proper fertilizer had been pulled from the marked some years ago, precisely because a terrorist might use it to make a bomb. (There also was the point about using sparklers instead of cherry bombs or something, but the news articles didn't last Christmas didn't say whether he could have gotten the right fireworks.) So the fertilizer part of the formula was unobtainable.

Thousands? C'mon. It was a good-sized FAE-type bomb. He had about ten gallons of gas, a few bags of fertilizer, and a can of firecrackers. Talk about making something out of nothing. Is someone trying to discredit someone else?
Here's my not-so-professional "Holiday Inn" analysis:
The Oklahoma City bomb was composed of several barrels of fertiizer and diesel in a V-formation aimed at the Federal Building. It took a Ryder truck to carry it, not a Pathfinder. Those two bombs aren't even in the same league.
I can see why it is tempting to assume that the gasoline and fertilizer would be distributed ideally by the initial blast, the the structure of the SUV and any people milling about and any nearby objects would seriously diminish this effect. Only the mixture going upwards would stand a chance of getting any distance, and then it would only pound people from above and give them a good headache, and only at close range.
Was this thing parked in the middle of a concert or something?

So the fertilizer part of the formula was unobtainable.
If you cannot find AN at your local garden center or Home Depot, any rural farmers supply will carry it. Be prepared to offer your name and address. Usually farm suppliers know their regular customers, so strangers ordering larger quantities will get special attention.

I had a friend once that was developing a fusion of copper and steel plate for applications in industrial welding. He rented a gravel pit where he buried the copper and steel, cover it with fertilizer and diesel, and ignited it. This was all pre-911.
Needless to say the neighbors grew quickly tired of the noise, to say nothing of the numerous environmental regulations he was breaking,
A Marine colonel at the center of a court-martial case about leaking secret intelligence information to civilian law enforcement agencies has died, the Marine Corps announced Tuesday.
Larry Richards, a Marine reservist and a retired detective with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, died Saturday of natural causes. He had been scheduled for an Article 32 hearing, akin to a preliminary hearing.
The case involves allegations that Marines working for Richards in the intelligence division at Camp Pendleton gave him classified documents about purported terrorism threats so that he could share them with an anti-terrorism task force organized by the Sheriff's Department. Richards, in his civilian job as a sheriff's detective, was a co-founder of the task force, based in Norwalk.
The Terrorism Early Warning Group, formed in 1996, was meant to bring together intelligence analysts from local, state and federal agencies. However, Marines were not authorized to share intelligence documents, including some from the CIA, with the group, according to military prosecutors.
In May, a Marine major charged in the case pleaded guilty to dereliction of duty and conduct unbecoming an officer and was given a reprimand and ordered to forfeit $6,000 in pay. Three enlisted Marines have been convicted in the matter.

He died of natural causes when he fell off a ladder while driving, breaking his neck and causing the car to drive off a steep cliff and explode in a fireball.

[Al Arabiya Latest]The United States must drop its "cowboy" attitude if it wants to hold dialogue with Iran over its nuclear program, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Monday as news surfaced that Tehran is is using a bank in Germany to beat sanctions.
"We are for negotiations, but to do so you have to sit down like a good boy," Ahmadinejad said, referring to the United States, in a speech broadcast live on state television.
"They adopt a resolution to force a dialogue, but this cowboy logic has no place in Iran."

"cowboy" attitude
They always say that like it's a bad thing. To an American, however, it's a high compliment. We all grew up wanting to be cowboys (except maybe someone who went to school in Indonesia...).

The United States is headed for a downfall, wanted radical Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki said in an audio tape released Monday.
The American-born al-Awlaki said U.S. cockiness will lead to the country's ruin, ABC News reported. "Imperial hubris is leading (America) to its fate: a war of attrition, a continuous hemorrhage that would end with the fall and splintering of the United States of America," al-Awlaki said.
He said U.S. Army Maj. Nidal Hassan, the accused Fort Hood shooter, and Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Nigerian charged in the failed Christmas Day bombing of an American jetliner, were inspired by U.S. foreign policy. "America refuses to admit that its foreign policies are the reason behind a man like Nidal Hassan, born and raised in the U.S., turning his guns against American soldiers," said al-Awlaki, who also met with Abdulmutallab before his attempted attack.
A U.S. counterterrorism official said the tape is probably authentic but has little import, ABC said. "It's not just extremist bravado, it's trash," the official, whose name was not reported, said.
Al-Awlaki also gave an explanation for his decision to fight the country where he was raised. "I could not reconcile between living in the U.S. and being a Muslim, and I eventually came to the conclusion that jihad against America is binding upon myself, just as it is binding on every other able Muslim," he said.

You notice how all of these juvenile goat-gangers do all their preaching and spewing while hiding out, afraid that a HELLFIRE or some other type of US retribution will smack 'em in the face.
"I could not reconcile between living in the U.S. and being a Muslim"
I can believe that. The United States is predicated on individual liberty. I-slam is all about being a cog in the wheel, and never straying even a millimeter from the path Mo-ham-head laid out in the 7th Century. I guess the freedom just got too much for him. May the rest of the followers of islam follow him out the door. Besides, the more that gather together, the cheaper it'll be to take 'em out.
