--Tech & Moderator Notes
Missing Articles?
We are having some apparent issues with the submission of articles by everyone, guests, regulars and mods. The issue is some elements of stories are "disappearing", such as headlines and the like.

I do not think this is a technical issue rather than a human one, but I want to give everyone a heads up just in case we do have an actual technical problem.

If you submit an article, please make certain a headline is written. That includes articles with just simple links.

I have found in the submissions interface if you post too quickly with a slow link, some of what you have submitted will disappear, because of the automated antispam scans. In other words, please take care that the page has fully loaded before making submissions.

That may be the more likely proximate cause of the "disappearances."

This ain't a race, and you don't get free content or discounts of your next purchase from rantburg.com if you post quickly, so please take take care and take the time to ensure all the elements of the story you post are in the post when you submit your post.

#4  I have been caught out this way in the past, and it might be a minor technical thing. While writing or pasting the headline, or the article for submission, I accidentally hit the enter key and it posts before I'm ready.

I *think* it was when I was manually typing in a headline different from the original article. So a simple test would be to type something in the title, text or source box and hit the enter key. If it posts, that might be the problem.
Posted by: Anonymoose || 11/13/2010 15:18 Comments || Top||

#5  The space key will submit the article if the tab is on the submit key as well, so it is not necessary to hit enter to post an article; the point being in posting articles is to take your time and if you are in a hurry, just don't post.

I have several instances on any given day in the course of rewriting Mexican news that hitting just the right combo of keys will cause the text to highlight and disappear.

In that case, all you have to do is to go to edit and select Undo as many times as needed to recover the text you accidentally deleted.

And when you post it may be helpful not to close a browser window when you are done because if you do make a mistake, you can then see what you did, report it to the mods in the O-club and we can clean it up from there.

Afghanistan
Taliban Assault on FOB Fenty Repelled
US and Afghan troops repelled a Taliban assault on a base in eastern Afghanistan, killing at least eight fighters, in the latest Taliban attempt to overrun a US outpost.

A Taliban force, whose size has yet to be determined, opened fire on Forward Operating Base Fenty in the Behsud district in Nangarhar, an ISAF spokesman told The Long War Journal. The Taliban opened fire with small arms from "insurgent fighting positions," the International Security Assistance Force said in a press release on the incident. A combined US and Afghan quick reaction force counterattacked the Taliban after identifying the enemy positions, and broke up the attack.

US troops estimated
Meaning we were still chasing them and hadn't stopped to count, or the remaining parts were too small to tell how many they came from?
that eight enemy fighters, including one who was wearing a suicide vest,
which indicates AQ, not just 'bunnies
were killed during the counterattack. No US or Afghan casualties were reported.

Fourteen suicide bombers attack Jalalabad airport
FOURTEEN suicide bombers attacked the main airport and a foreign military base at Jalalabad in Afghanistan's east, according to Reuters.

There was no word on casualties but smoke could be seen rising from the airport and explosions were heard, a witness said.

Nangarhar provincial police chief Obidullah Talwar confirmed the raid but had no further details.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said 14 suicide bombers were involved in the assault.

Somali pirates seize tanker near India
[Al Jazeera] Pirates off the coast of Somalia have carried out one of their most daring hijackings yet, seizing a tanker in waters close to India.
If they're pirates off the coast of Somalia they're not near India.
Thursday's raid in the Indian Ocean came as the world's leading anti-piracy experts debated solutions to the growing problem.
"All in favor of yardarm?"
"Aye!"
"And those in favor of keelhauling?"
"Aye!"

NAPALM!!! DRINK!!!
The conference in London also comes as experts claim that Somali pirates have set up a sophisticated network of agents to negotiate and launder ransom money that has turned the seizing of ships into a lucrative business.
What would we do without experts. We knew this a year ago here at the Burg.
An international expert who attended the annual assembly of Interpol, the global police organisation, in Doha, the Qatari capital, told the AFP news agency that sea pirates use the financial hub of Dubai and Somalia's southern neighbour Kenya as key transit points to launder the millions of dollars in ransom money by organised gangs.

"We think that they have a network of correspondents in the region to negotiate the ransoms and to transfer part of the money," he said.

Another expert, who is based in the United Arab Emirates, said Dubai was a platform where the pirates do their business.

"Dubai is one of the places where they launder the ransom money," said the expert, who also spoke . "It's the irony of Dubai. The bulk of negotiations are conducted here, the deliveries are arranged by security companies that are here, the money is delivered or transferred and ends up here, discretely."

The US state department has also identified the UAE, whose seven emirates include Dubai, and Kenya as centres pirates are using to run their illegal operations.

#1  Are they saying that the irony is that ordinary shipping traffic is coordinated in Dubai and piracy is also coordinated in Dubai?
Posted by: American Delight || 11/13/2010 9:48 Comments || Top||

#2  Probably.

Dubai is not the only place. I suspect the major shipping centers have informants in them, and probably not Somalis. Money is still a lubricant.
Posted by: Pappy || 11/13/2010 13:13 Comments || Top||

#3  That is the way the organized pirates have always operated : buy clerks in shipping offices or insurance exchanges to get the information on the juicy targets. Henry Morgan did that, as did many of the successful pirates operating in the Spanish Main.

Nigeria says diplomat may be linked to arms cache from Iran
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Nigeria's foreign minister on Friday said a diplomat may be linked to an illegal arms shipment sent from Iran and discovered in the country last month.

Nigeria has so far secured clearance to question one Iranian national who has taken refuge in the embassy in Abuja since security forces intercepted 13 containers of arms at a port in Lagos, Foreign Minister Odein Ajumogobia said.

"We are talking about two individuals, one of them is a diplomat," Ajumogobia told a news conference, without providing further details on the diplomat.

The diplomat enjoys immunity under international laws so Nigeria cannot at this stage question him.

"If the Iranians are willing to waive immunity, then we will pursue that," he said a day after he held talks in Abuja with Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki.

Arabia
Lawyer Cori Crider, "Sharif Mobley was tortured in Yemeni Prison."
The simplicity of Yemeni expatriates in New York was the reason why Sharif Mobley and his family went to Yemen in 2008 to study Arabic, said Zenja Mobley, wife of terror suspect Sharif Mobley.
Try the Berlitz course next time ...
"We did not expect that our visit to Yemen would become a living hell after we lived there for two years quietly and in peace."
I would. That's why most people don't go there...
Zenja complained that her husband, now facing the death penalty, was even investigated with at the U.S. Embassy because he was "bearded and was interested in religious affairs".
That's two warning signs for me, sure enough ...
She accuses the U.S. Embassy of ignoring the issue of her husband. She adds that the U.S. Embassy refused to give her a translator when she asked for one.

Mobley's U.S. lawyer, Cori Crider added that U.S. intelligence officers threatened Sharif that they would torture his family as well if he does not specify where Anwar Awlaki, a terror suspect, was. Crider added that investigators told him that he and his family would be raped in Yemeni prisons if he does not cooperate.
More likely the interrogators told him that they would confine him to a cell with his mouthy wife, after which he sang like a canary ...
She added that the reason why Sharif was taken to the hospital was due to his bad health situation after being held in an underground prison, which in result, made his health condition bad.

According to the Crider, after Mobley spent two months in prison, American investigators approached him again, and when they did not find the information they wanted from Sharif, they threatened to treat his family the same way. She claims that Mobley was tortured in prison.

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
his wife claims that she recognized a number of Yemeni officers who searched her house when she went to the embassy and are employed at the U.S. Embassy in Sana'a.

On January 24, 2009, governmental troops wearing masks kidnapped Mobley early on the 24th of last January, in front of Maqaleh Grocery Store in the Asbahi area of the capital Sana'a.

He is now being trialed not on terror charges, but for killing a soldier. Yemeni government has said that there is no proof that Mobley is linked to terrorism.

That's a new keyboard you owe me, fella. :)

Also wanted to mention that it ain't hard to learn Arabic here in the states - a young man working for me is a convert to Islam and he speaks it quite well with nothing more than books you can buy at just about any decent bookstore. I've looked at 'em - quite reasonable, they are, teaching you how to learn phrases that will enable you to buy groceries, ask for a doctor, carry on an intelligent conversation, that sort of thing. I'm guessing those Yemeni books were needed to learn that green wire/red wire stuff.

#2  Mr. Wife studied Arabic with a tutor provided by Inlingua, a competitor of Berlitz (in Cincinnati the two companies are within walking distance of one another). While the nice Palestinian university student and the textbook provided was very useful for daily conversation, reading menus and shop signs (Mr. Wife greatly impressed his colleagues in India by reading the Urdu shop signs, written in Arabic), the teaching clearly would not have been adequate for studying the Koran, written in the classical dialect, any more than English as a Second Language classes would prepare one for Shakespear and Chaucer.

#4  Pappy, my mother found it helpful to read Chaucer as if it were in modern Dutch instead of Middle English. Her professor praised her pronunciation, and she had no trouble with the vocabulary or grammar. In fairness, though, it must be remarked that her first reading assignment in the English language was Romeo and Juliet, so perhaps her feel for the language was a bit skewed.

Bangladesh
Two killed in 'shootout'
Two people were killed in a shootout between Rapid Action Battalion personnel and alleged carjackers in Ashulia early yesterday.

The deceased are Hasan Matbar, 25, and Monir Hossain, 28. Rab claimed they were involved in carjacking.
What? They weren't Purba Banglar commies?
Acting on a tip off
... another special thank you to Mahmoud the Weasel ...
that some carjackers were waylaying near Morning Glory School on Bishmail-Jirabo Road,
No, we don't know where that is ...
a special team of plainclothes Rab
No black uniforms? No spiffy sunglasses?
went on a drive to capture them, says a Rab press release.
Went on a drive with Hasan and Monir in the trunk, it meant to say ...
The press release claimed that the gang halted the unmarked Rab vehicle and tried to overpower the Rab personnel inside to take over the vehicle.
Danger Sensing: Malfunction...
The Rab personnel chased them but the 'carjackers' opened fire on them forcing Rab to retaliate. According to Rab officials, the two were bullet hit during that time.
One behind each ear ...
The injured died after they were taken to Savar Upazila Health Complex.
Not a Level One trauma center, but they do have a spacious, well-equipped morgue ...
Rab recovered two foreign pistols, 10 bullets, six bullet shells and two knives from the spot.

Rab officials claimed that a group of thugs had been mugging, abducting people and carjacking over the last few days in the area.

However, Shumi Akhter, sister of deceased Hasan Matbar, told The Daily Star that Hasan was the owner of Chandra Para Automobiles and Manir Hossain was a worker of his workshop.
Maybe they were carjacking to get spare parts ...
They have no priors or cases filed in any police station, she said.
"They were good boys!"
She claimed that a driver of the workshop, who was arrested in connection with kidnapping a child, implicated her brother and Rab personnel murdered him.
The RAB does like to tidy up ...

Costa Rica, Nicaragua in border row
[Iran Press TV] Costa Rica has threatened to take its border dispute with Nicaragua to the United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society and the International Court of Justice if no other solution is found.

On Wednesday, Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla issued a 48-hour ultimatum to its neighbor to remove troops that San Jose says are stationed on Costa Rican territory.
Thanks to Google Maps, for misplacing the border. *sigh* They don't make mapmakers like they used to, either.
"Costa Rica is not afraid to go before any international body," Chinchilla told CNN en Espanol on Wednesday.

The dispute is over a parcel of land on the Atlantic coast, along the San Juan River, known as Calero Island. Both sides claim ownership of the island.

Last week, the Nicaraguan government sent troops to the territory and planted its flag there. Costa Rica, which is one of the few countries in the world without a military, immediately demanded the withdrawal of the troops, saying that it has been invaded.
Which is why they're going to the UN instead of kicking the Nicaraguans out themselves. I think we can all see how this is going to end ...
The Organization of American States (OAS) is to meet Thursday to discuss the issue.

Last week, OAS Secretary-General Jose Miguel Insulza visited both countries and also flew over the disputed land to brace his mediation efforts.

In his report, Insulza said both Chinchilla and Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega have so-far agreed to bilateral talks and that the military and police presence near the disputed area should not be escalated.

However,
The infamous However...
the dispute remains far from being solved.

Chinchilla has said she will only enter border talks with Ortega if Nicaragua pulled its troops out of the disputed area "as a sign of good will."

Otherwise, she stressed, no talks would be possible. She also threatened to send the Costa Rican police to the enclave if the troops do not pull out.

#2  After the last C.A. curfluffle, Costa Rica better be sure which side of the border the Marines will be deployed upon. What does it say they went to the OAS then the UN, but no mention of the USA?

In a sane world there are already US advisors and forward artillary spotters there.

#3  Gee, anybody else sense that Danny Ortega sees an opening since the Oblahblah administration hasn't got the faintest idea what the Monroe Doctrine was about, except that some old white guy wrote it and so it must be bad, and we aren't going to act like a superpower anymore, not even a regional power, so Danny and Lula and Hugo and the Iranian/Chinese connections can just further set up Latin America for a hegemon and resource base linked to the rising Pacific Power? No, No, we are way too smart to stop that.....

He had gutted the Indian military and the ChiComs knew it. Taliban, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi plan suicide attacks on Eid
[Pak Daily Times] The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi
... a 'more violent' offshoot of Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain. LeJ's purpose in life is to murder anyone who's not of utmost religious purity, starting with Shiites but including Brelvis, Ahmadis, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Rosicrucians, and just about anyone else you can think of. They are currently a wholly-owned subsidiary of al-Qaeda ...
Taqfiris are such lovely people.
(LJ) have planned to carry out suicide kabooms in Islamabad and other parts of the country, sources said.

According to threat alert-503 based on intelligence information, TTP Commander Qari Momin has sent four boomers to attack Eid congregations in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan and Faisalabad. The intelligence and law enforcement agencies have also received threats through fax by the TTP.

According to another intelligence report, a terrorist, Ibrar, has assigned the task of suicide kabooms to his accomplices across the country. Sources said the agency had intercepted a telephonic conversation between Ibrar and his accomplices on suicide kabooms across the country, particularly the areas, which had been peaceful so far.

According to another intelligence report, the TTP Islamic fascisti have planned to carry out suicide kabooms in Punjab, particularly in Islamabad. Reports based on secret information further revealed that the Islamic fascisti had sent an explosive-laden vehicle from Miranshah to the high value targets in Punjab.

Another reports stated that Islamic fascisti were focusing on major cities of Punjab, especially Lahore and Rawalpindi as 762 major Eid congregations would be held in various cities of the province, many at open places.

According to various reports, the LJ was involved in various acts of terrorist activities and was likely to target Eid congregations, mosques, imambargahs, shrines, police and army establishments and places of worship belonging to minorities.

Terrorists could target innocent civilians in markets, bazaars and sale points of sacrificial animal, the reports said.

A police official suggested that the district administration should arrange walkthrough gates at important Eid congregations in collaboration with social workers and the Civil Defence Department.

However,
The infamous However...
the Special Branch has also decided to install walkthrough gates at sensitive places while sniffer dogs will be deployed at important points in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan and Faisalabad.

The law enforcement agencies have been directed to remain vigilant to avoid any untoward incident while an effective strategy has been be chalked out to monitor the activities of banned organisations with regard to the collection of hides, as this was likely to embarrass the government on international levels.

After receiving the report, the National Crisis Management Cell of the Interior Ministry has issued a circular to the all home departments, provincial coppers and heads of other law enforcement agencies with direction to immediately put security on high alert.

In the light of the threat, the Punjab Home Department and the inspector general of police has directed the all the regional coppers, the city coppers and the district coppers to immediately take all necessary and preventive security measures to foil the nefarious designs of terrorists.

Pakistani Minister holds Lashkar e-Jhangvi responsible for Karachi blast
(KUNA) -- Pak Federal Interior Minister Friday held outlawed bully boy group, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi
... a 'more violent' offshoot of Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain. LeJ's purpose in life is to murder anyone who's not of utmost religious purity, starting with Shiites but including Christians, Buddhists, Rosicrucians, and what have you. They are currently a wholly-owned subsidiary of al-Qaeda ...
Don't let's forget the poor Ahmadiyyas, so active in the U.S. as Muslims denouncing jihadi terrorism, so terrorized in Muslim countries for daring to think of themselves as Muslim.
(LJ), responsible for Thursday nights suicide blast in the city of Bloody Karachi that left 20 dead and over 140 maimed. In statements to the press in Bloody Karachi, Minister Rehman Malik said that LJ was behind the Bloody Karachi suicide blast. However,
The infamous However...
on Thursday some segments of local and foreign media reported that Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) was behind the kaboom.
The two statements aren't mutually exclusive. Lots of turbans carry two or three or more membership cards in their wallets, since they're all on the same side.
The Minister reiterated the governments resolve to fight terrorism and said that snuffies wanted to spread waves of fear among the people through acts of terrorism. He vowed to root out terrorism from the country by taking strict action against the bully boys.

Law enforcers clueless about Karachi terrorists
[Pak Daily Times] Law enforcement agencies have so far been unable to locate the culprits behind Thursday's suicide blast at the office of Crime Investigation Department Civil Lines. The investigation DIG said law enforcement agencies had received evidence that the blast was similar to the one at Marriott Islamabad and FIA office Lahore, and it could be possible that the same TTP group was behind the recent attack. A Bomb Disposal Squad official disclosed that around 1,000kg of explosives had been used in the blast, adding that the squad had not been able to identify the vehicle that carried the explosives.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Egyptians tipped Israel on Gaza missile zap
Namnam, a senior commander of the group some analysts describe as linked to al-Qaeda, was tracked and killed after Israeli security operatives learned that he was preparing a terror attack on U.S. forces stationed in the Sinai Desert not far from coastal Palestinian enclave ruled by Hamas.

But the most striking element of the operation was the source of the tip: Egyptian intelligence gleaned news of the plot from Army of Islam operatives captured earlier in the Sinai. Egyptian security forces work to interdict arms and explosives on smuggling routes that run across the vast expanse from Sudan to Gaza. But sharing the intelligence on Namnam with their Israeli counterparts marked a level of Egyptian cooperation not seen by the Jewish state in years.
Looks like nobody liked Namnam...

#1  Proctor & Gamble, the manufacturers of the Namnam diaper in Egypt, were "largely relieved" to hear of his demise.

#2  A wonderful joke, Johnnie, but Procter & Gamble's diaper brand in Egypt is Pampers. They generally reuse product names across the world, which is why in Japan their laundry detergent brand is called Ariel -- not one of the smartest moves by one of Harvard Business School's favourite companies for case studies.

I s'pose it's possible, though, that the local term for nappies is namnam, or perhaps its a local brand?

Hamas arrests dozens of Fatah members
(KUNA) -- Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, security services carried out campaigns of mass arrests in the ranks of the Fatah movement to prevent commemorating the sixth anniversary of late President Yasser Arafat on Friday.
So much for that much-vaunted attempt at 'merging'...
Forces of the Islamic group, in Gazoo Strip, nabbed Ashraf Jumaa, a Fatah member of the Paleostinian Legislative Council (PLC), and a number of Fatah members, local sources said. They raided Jumaa's office and jugged him, plus other members of Fatah and escorted them to an unknown location, they added.

They also jugged dozens of Fatah followers in the town of Khan Younis in southern Gazoo Strip, and summoned 13 others in eastern Gazoo, it noted.

Fatah's parliamentary bloc denounced the actions made by Hamas, Fatah said in its statement.

"The attacks are serious against members of Fatah movement, including elected representatives," it added.

Hamas bans activities in homage to the late leader, one of the founders of the Paleostine Liberation Organization (PLO).

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Lebanon cleric sentenced to life
[Al Jazeera] A Lebanese military court has convicted a Mohammedan holy man of terrorism charges and sentenced him in absentia to life in prison.

Omar Bakri Mohammed was among 54 people sentenced on Friday as part of ongoing trials against fighters who were allegedly involved in deadly festivities with the Lebanese army in 2007.

Bakri was convicted of "belonging to an gang with the aim of carrying out terrorist acts and plotting to kill Lebanese soldiers".

The holy man, who holds Syrian and Lebanese citizenship, lived in Britain for 20 years where he headed the now-disbanded group al-Muhajiroun [The Emigrants].

Bakri left Britain for Leb in 2005 and the British government barred him from returning.

In absentia
Judicial officials said Bakri was sentenced to life because of his failure to show up in court for his trial.

Bakri, who lives in the northern Lebanese town of Tripoli, a hotbed of Sunni fundamentalists, said he was "shocked'' to learn of the verdict through his lawyer on Friday.

"I never received any summons for a trial, or any arrest warrant," he said, adding that the charges were "lies and fabrications".

Bakri's lawyer informed him he had 15 days to appeal the ruling, but the holy man refuses to hand himself in.

It was not immediately clear why authorities have not jugged Bakri, who appears regularly on television and does not live in hiding. Security officials declined to comment.

Bakri became a focus of British attention after he said he would not inform the police if he knew Mohammedans were planning attacks such as the July 7, 2005 bombings in London that killed 56 people.

The holy man, who also has been criticised in Britain for his fiery sermons, said his Mohammedan faith prevented him from reporting fellow Mohammedans to the British police.

Britain later said it had barred Bakri from returning to that country because his presence was not "conducive to public good".

Bakri says he is now "retired" and spends his time preaching and teaching students and followers in Europe, Australia and Canada.

He appears often on local Lebanese TV stations as a guest on political talk shows, including an appearance last week.

"Everyone knows my address, I go on TV and army intelligence interrogate me after each TV appearance. Now all of a sudden Omar Bakri is a runaway who failed to appear in court. Why?" he asked.

In addition to Bakri, 53 other people - 20 of them in absentia -- received sentences ranging from one year to life imprisonment.
