Afghanistan
Afghanistan: Taliban bomb destroys 22 Nato fuel tankers
A bomb planted by the Taliban in northern Afghanistan has destroyed 22 Nato fuel tankers carrying supplies to coalition forces, local officials say.

The vehicles were hit by a pre-dawn explosion which triggered a huge fire that engulfed them in flames, they say.

At the time, the trucks were parked overnight in Samangan province, as they headed from Uzbekistan towards Nato forces in the south.

Police told the BBC that the fire caused by the bomb is still burning.

An intelligence official said the device was attached under one of the trucks, which were parked close together.

"Since it was early in the morning, there were not a lot of people around. Otherwise, it could have caused a lot more casualties,'' the official told the BBC.

In a statement, the Taliban said they carried out the attack, which officials say is the first of its kind in northern Afghanistan.

The trucks were attacked in the same province where well-known Afghan politician Ahmad Khan Samangani was killed in a suicide attack on Saturday while attending his daughter's wedding.

#2  "Nobody knows anything about a war until it begins. Just two years before the Polish air force had been blown to hell on the ground. The French caught it the following spring. In spite of that, the same thing happened to our planes at Pearl Harbor. And yet two days later, in spite of all of it the Japs catch our air corps [at Clark Field] on Luzon with its pants down. Only that wasn't the end. Months later, on my way out through Australia, I pass a big American field, and there they are, bombers and fighters parked in orderly rows, wing tip to wing tip. "Hell," they told me, "The Japs are hundreds of miles away." Except that's where they're always supposed to be when they catch you with your pants down, and I thought to myself, Jesus Christ, won't these guys ever learn?"

#4  Perhaps an inside job? Perhaps the 'bomb' was attached earlier and they simply waited for the trucks to be all bunched-up like this.

#5  Generally these aren't "NATO" fuel tankers. They are private Pakistani fuel tankers under contract to move NATO fuel. By blowing these tankers up, they have actually reduced the ability of the Pakistani economy to move fuel domestically for their own use. In other words, the Taliban have just reduced the amount of fuel available in their own gas stations for their own use. But they're apparently too stupid to understand this.

#6  #5 is dead-on - every Tanker or Supply Tank the Militants destroy is another major fuel or food riot in Pakistan's Cities-towns, a consequence which I'm sure the Militants were well-aware of.

* WORLD NEWS > [NATO] SUPPLIES TO AFGHANISTAN NOT FULLY RESTORED YET.

Milyuhns and Tilyuhns of Trucks remain backlogged at staging areas due to ...

i. Lack of reliable security at key checkpoints.
ii.Hard to transport Fuel, etc. to Afghanistan when your Truck isn't carrying any, as due to Pak oil companies not providing any loads to filleth same.

Multiple Insurgents Killed Planting Own Bombs in Roadside
[Tolo News] At least 17 bully boyz were killed this week while planting bombs in the road in three different Afghan provinces, according to local officials.

As many as 11 cut-thoats, including their Iranian trainer, were killed in the blast from an improvised bomb (IED) in northwestern Badghis province, a local official said Tuesday.

The blast occurred in the Bala Murghab district on Sunday while the bully boyz were learning how to plant roadside mines, provincial army commander Gen. Daoud Shah Wafadar said.

The mine went kaboom! killing 11 bully boyz and an Iranian who is understood to have been training the group on how to plant IEDs, he said.

It comes as at least three bully boyz were killed trying to embed an IED in the road in Parwan province, but were fired upon by security forces, a local official said Monday.

The bully boyz were planting the bomb in the Pul Kharawati region of Koh-e-Safi district on Sunday morning when security forces opened fire on them, provincial front man Roshna Khalid said.

Two of the Afghan cops were maimed in the return fire, he said.

Another three bully boyz were killed while planting a bomb in eastern Laghman province on Sunday night, a local official said Monday.

The bully boyz blew themselves up embedding the IED in a road in central Laghman, provincial front man Sarhadi Zwak said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the sea battle, the Terror of the Baltic's career had come to an abrupt and watery end...
12 bully boyz were killed Sunday night in western Kandahar province during a clash with Afghan police.

The bully boyz attacked a police checkpoint in the Shah Wali Kot district and came under fire, provincial front man Jawed Faisal said.

According to Faisal, the clash did not result in any security or civilian causalities.

In addition, a weapons smuggler was killed in a joint Afghan and Isaf military operation in Maidan Shahr district of Wardak province on Saturday, Isaf said in a statement on Monday.

Several other cut-thoat were also killed in operation.

The weapons smuggler, Tor Gul, who was also known as Emal and Mukhlis, was responsible for transporting ammunition and IED components for bully boyz throughout the region, Isaf said.

Sudan prisoners' relatives beaten, dispersed-witness
[Al Ahram] Sudanese security forces broke up a protest in central Khartoum on Tuesday by dozens of people demanding the release of relatives jailed for taking part in four weeks of anti-government demonstrations, a witness said.

The demonstrators began gathering in front of national security headquarters in the centre of the capital, but police and security agents quickly dispersed them, the witness said.

Dawn Explosions rock Ethiopian troops in Beledweyne town
(Sh. M. Network)-Deadly multiple blasts are reportedly rocked on Tuesday Æthiopian troops in Somalia's central town of Beledweyne, a town which is under the control of Somali government soldiers and its allied Æthiopian troops, reports said.

Eyewitnesses confirmed to Shabelle Media that roadside kabooms targeted Æthiopian forces as they were walking east of Beledweyne, but could not verify the exact number of casualties to the Æthiopian military.

Following the blasts Æthiopian forces momentarily halted business and public transportation operations, opening fire at nearby crowds indiscriminately, but No deaths reported.

No Æthiopian military front man has briefed the media on the incident.

Beledweyne, 350 kilometers north of Mogadishu, and a trading hub near the Æthiopian border, has witnessed a string of attacks and co-coordinated killings against soldiers and civilians since Al shabab vacated at the end of last year without fighting.

Three Kenya police killed near Somali border: police
(Sh.M.Network) -- Three Kenyan police officers were killed in an ambush in northeastern Kenya near the Somali border on Monday, the local police chief said, the latest in a rash of attacks in the region.

Kenya has been hit by a wave of grenade and bomb attacks since its troops crossed into Somalia last October and has blamed al Shabaab, al Qaeda-linked militants, and the group's sympathizers inside its lawless neighbor.

The attackers have targeted Kenya's northeast, the capital Nairobi and the port city of Mombasa, threatening the country's lucrative tourist trade.

"Three administration police officers from Liboi have lost their lives. They were attacked while on the way back to Liboi," Garissa county police chief George Kingi told Reuters. Liboi is a border town near Somalia.

"I can't tell how many officers were injured. We have yet to secure detailed information in regard to the attack or point a finger at any group of persons behind the attack," Kingi said.

Al Shabaab formally merged with al Qaeda this year and has declared war on Kenya because of its incursion into Somalia.

#1  Exact details unclear .. later reports say that one police officer was killed and one seriously wounded. It may be that the first report was wrong, or that 2 incidents occurred. This is the 2'nd attack within a week or so directed against vehicles carrying Kenyan police officers - usually on roads in northern Kenya. Al Shabbab appears to be smuggling weapons and militants thru refugee camps for Somalis located inside Kenya and on the border with Somalia. This poses a big challenge to the Kenyan Gov't - if they close the camps then a lot of innocent refugees will die. But it is almost impossible to enforce security inside these large refugee camps.

Explosion Rocks Central Nigerian City of Jos
[An Nahar] An kaboom rocked central Nigeria's city of Jos on Tuesday, with an official saying a bomb detonated outside a government building while residents reported heavy weapons fire from a lone attacker.

"There was an kaboom this morning... in the Bukuru area of Jos South. The bomb was intended to blow up the secretariat of Jos South local government," said the Plateau state governor's front man Pam Ayuba.

He said it was not yet clear if anyone was killed, but a military front man and residents said one young person died in the attack.

Resident Murtala Abdullahi said an attacker fired a heavy weapon at a building from a main avenue, and that it appeared a Mohammedan school in the Bukuru area, across the street from the government building, was the target.

Later there was a separate attack on a bldg used by security forces in the same town - possibly with one fatality for a person standing outside (unclear).

Arabia
Yemen Militants Cut Off Soldier's Fingers
[An Nahar] Gunmen in south Yemen, where troops are hunting down gunnies linked to al-Qaeda, kidnapped a soldier and cut off three of his fingers, the defense ministry's website said on Tuesday.

The site, 26sep.net, named the soldier as Mohammed al-Jaradi, and said he was kidnapped late on Monday in Daleh, the capital of the province of the same name, and taken him to a village.

Jaradi was later found in the village with three fingers on one hand missing.

The ministry said the authorities were trying to prevent the gunnies from regrouping in Daleh, after they were ousted by the military from neighboring Abyan
...a governorate of Yemen. The region was a base to the Aden-Abyan Islamic Army terrorist group until it dropped the name and joined al-Qaeda. Its capital is Zinjibar. In March 2011, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula declared the governate an Islamic Emirate after seizing control of the region. The New York Times fastidiously reported that those in control, while Islamic hard boyz, are not in fact al-Qaeda, but something else that looks, tastes, smells, and acts the same. Yemeni government forces launched an effort to re-establish control of the region when President-for-Life Saleh was tossed and the carnage continues...
province where they had controlled several areas for a year.

It also said the police headquarters in Daleh was shelled on Tuesday by person or persons unknown. Courts there closed several days ago because of the number of armed attacks, it said.

[Yemen Post] Four Yemeni officers including he deputy director of the central prison in Taiz, Saleh Al-Awlaki, were killed and four others were maimed on Monday in an armed ambush installed at Beer Basha of Taiz city, local sources said.

The sources pointed out that the attackers could escape and security forces are still pursuing them, singling out that a five-year child was also killed.

A security official who spoke on condition of anonymity said it was not known who the attackers were.

One prisoner killed in Dhamar
[Yemen Post] One prisoner was killed and nearly ten others were maimed in the city of Dhamar as violence acts broke out inside the governorate's central prison on Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses said that they heard shootings inside the jail, pointing out that the shootings lasted for two hours.

Security sources said that Ali Jubran was killed as security forces randomly shot fire on prisoners, affirming that the tensions erupted as prisoners refused to allow taking one prisoner out to be executed.

The central prison of Dhamar witnessed violence acts in late 2011 and the beginning of 2012 as festivities broke out between security forces and prisoners in which seven persons were killed and dozens others were maimed.

Well-informed sources said that about 15 persons were killed and dozens others were maimed inside the jail since last September.

Committees formed by the government to probe the events have not disclose any outcomes or reasons of violence.

Policemen foiled in February a large-scale escape attempt by prisoners from the prison. There were several attempts of the prisoners to escape.

The Dhamar central prison witnessed chaos, but the prison management negotiated with prisoners and reconsidered their demands and complaints.

The Yemeni capital, Sana'a, along with some Yemeni main cities witness a state of loose security as suicide kabooms and target of military locations increased during the few past months.

2011 Events that forced the former president President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
to step down led to the spread of violence and a break down law and order in some governorates.

Bangladesh
Terror financed due to HSBC failure
[Bangla Daily Star] Islami Bank Bangladesh Ltd and Social Islami Bank Ltd came into the spotlight yesterday for their alleged links to terrorist financing after a US Senate report exposed British banking giant HSBC's internal governance failure to control flows of suspect funds.

One of the banks was allegedly funding al-Qaeda, and the late Osama bin Laden
... who knows that it's like to live in the belly of a whale only he's not living...
's brother-in-law held shares in a company that has shares in the bank.

In all these cases, profit motive rather than cautions from various levels within the bank and standard procedures ruled the game.

More thoughts were given to the bank's making $47,000 in revenue that might go up to $75,000 a year later than to the terrorist links the banks allegedly had, or the US authorities' view of the banks.

A report of the US Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, a congressional watchdog panel, has revealed these troubling information which show a "pervasively polluted" culture at HSBC Holdings Plc.

The bank acted as financier to clients seeking to route shadowy funds from the world's most dangerous and secretive corners, including Mexico, Iran, Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in their national face...
and Syria, according to the report.

The US report also mentioned that Al Rajhi Bank, a Saudi bank, was involved in suspicious transactions.

HSBC apologised to the US Senate, saying it takes "compliance with the law, wherever it operates, very seriously".

In one instance, when Islami Bank wanted to open a US dollar account with the HSBC US office, questions were raised about the Saudi bank Al Rajhi's 37 percent ownership in Islami Bank. Ears of HSBC's anti-money laundering unit were cocked.

But the then head of HSBC Global Banknotes, Chris Lok, felt that his interest in considering a new account depended upon whether there was enough potential revenue to make.

"Is this an account worth chasing....How much money can you expect to make from this name? It's just that if the revenue is there then we are prepared for a good fight," he wrote. "The money is there and we should go for this account."

"Then Lok and others approved the account despite questions about its [Islami Bank] primary shareholder Al Rajhi Bank, whose past links to terrorist financing had received attention in the media ...and troubling information about Islami Bank itself," the senate report said.

HSBC's own Financial Intelligence Group (FIG) unit had reported that Sheikh Abdur Rahman, chief of Bangladesh's terrorist outfit JMB, had an account with Islami Bank. Bangladesh Bank found that two branches of Islami Bank had been engaged in "suspicious transactions" and urged the bank to take action against 20 bank employees for failing to report the suspicious transactions, according to the FIG report.

Six top snuffies including JMB chief Abdur Rahman and his deputy Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai were executed for killing two Jhalakathi judges in 2007.

HSBC's Know Your Customer unit had reported that Islami Bank be classified as a highest risk client but HSBC rejected the suggestion. It meant HSBC did not subject the bank to any enhanced monitoring.

HSBC's another internal report said a Saudi NGO, International Islamic Relief Organisation (IIRO), had been implicated in terrorist financing by the US government and included on the list of those prohibited to do business in the US. The IIRO had accounts with both Islami Bank and Social Islami Bank, and yet HSBC's Compliance Department denied an internal request of due diligence on the bank.

"Today, although HSBC exited the US banknotes business in 2010, Islami Bank remains a customer of two dozen HSBC affiliates," the report said.

Similarly on Social Islami Bank, the HSBC's internal report said two shareholders of the bank -- the IIRO and Islamic Charitable Society Lajnat al-Birr Al Islam -- had alleged links to terrorism.

"IIRO has also reportedly funded al-Qaeda directly as well as several of its satellite groups. Osama bin Laden's brother-in-law Mohammad Jamal Halifa headed the Philippine branch of the IIRO," said the FIG's internal report.

While the FIG cautioned about opening an account of Social Islami Bank, it failed to inform HSBC that Lajnat al-Birr, whose original name is Benevolence International Foundation, was designated by the US as a "financier of terrorism" with whom US persons are prohibited from doing business.

There were debates within HSBC about whether to open an account of Social Islami Bank, and yet the account was finally opened.

The FIG of HSBC also cautioned the bank about keeping Social Islami Bank as a client, an advice ignored by the British bank.

According to the US report, HSBC Bank USA, the US affiliate of the Asia-focused bank, supplied US dollars to Islami Bank and Social Islami Bank despite evidence of their links to terrorist financing.

The report, prepared by a team led by Senator Carl Levin, said in the case of Islami Bank, the factors included substantial ownership of the bank by al Rajhi, the central bank's fines for failing to report suspicious transactions by bad turbans, and an account provided to a terrorist organization.

And in terms of Social Islami Bank, the factors included ownership stakes held by two terrorist organizations whose shares were exposed but never sold as promised, and a bank chairman found to be involved with criminal wrongdoing.

The report said Al Rajhi Bank was associated with Islami Bank Bangladesh that provided an account to a Bangladeshi who had been accused of involvement in a terrorist bombing.

Islami Bank was fined three times for violating the anti-money laundering requirements in connection with providing bank services to "militants."

Al Rajhi Bank provided a correspondent account to Social Islami Bank, whose largest single shareholder had been the IIRO for many years.

A second shareholder was the precursor to the Benevolence Islamic Foundation, also later designated by the US as a terrorist organization, said the report.

In a statement on Monday, HSBC said, "We will acknowledge that, in the past, we have sometimes failed to meet the standards that regulators and customers expect. We will apologise, acknowledge these mistakes, answer for our actions and give our absolute commitment to fixing what went wrong.

"We have learned a great deal working with the Subcommittee on this case history and also working with U.S. regulatory authorities, and recognise that our controls could and should have been stronger and more effective in order to spot and deal with unacceptable behaviour.

"We believe that this case history will provide important lessons for the whole industry in seeking to prevent illicit actors entering the global financial system."

The bank said with a new big shotship team and a new strategy in place since last year, the HSBC Group has already taken a number of concrete steps to augment the framework to address these issues including significant changes to strengthen compliance, risk management and culture.

Canadian killed in Dagestan gun battle
A Canadian was among seven suspected terrorists militants killed Friday by Russian security forces in Dagestan. William Plotnikov, 23, died in a gun battle with Russian security forces near the village of Utamysh. A police officer was also killed.

Plotnikov was born in Russia but moved with his parents to Canada, where they lived in Toronto. He became a Canadian citizen in 2008. He was an avid boxer who trained at the European Boxing Club in Toronto under coach Boris Gitman.

"He was an excellent boxer. I thought for sure he would be good enough for (the) Olympics," said Gitman, who cried during an emotional interview.

Gitman said, "He wasn't comfortable here; he was looking for something and I don't think he found it here. He never talked about going back to Russia, he never talked about politics. But I saw him change while he was here; he wasn't satisfied by this Canadian life. But how his life could end like this, I have no idea."

Two Buses With 40 Israeli Tourists Blown Up At Bulgarian Airport
At least 3 people confirmed dead.
According to BurgasInfo.com not one but two buses were blown up. Unclear if the second one was also carrying Israeli tourists.

According to Bulgarian press Sega.bg, and confirmed by other wire sources, a bus with 40 Israeli tourists was "blown up" at 5:30 pm local time at the local airport of the seaside town of Bourgas. Sega says that according to BTV "it is an assassination attempt." The bomb was located in the trunk of a white bus with Israel tourists from Israel who were en route to the seaside town of Sunny Beach according to an airport source. The mayor of the city, Dimitar Nikolov confirmed the news according to Sega.

Furthermore, according to the airport's website, an Air Via flight from Tel Aviv landed at 4:50 pm local time. The shock wave was so large it also exploded two neighboringing buses located in the arrival area of the airport. The number of casualties is currently unknown, but at least three people are dead according to the local police, with dozens wounded. Sega adds "the flames are huge with three firetrucks on the scene and seven ambulances driving out charred people."

Apparently there were threats against Israeli tourists to Bulgaria in January, a warning from Iran in February about American bases in the country.

#3  Wouldn't surprise me if this turns out to be some AQ Sunni/SA offshoot fomenting aggression between Israel & Iran and making it look like Iran's doing. Result would be debilitating or eliminating one or both players in the coming struggle.

Can't believe the Persians would be this stupid and overt no matter what they say publicly(although I've been wrong before).

Someone else at play, methinks.

#11  7 people now confirmed dead ... 35 injured with several in critical condition. News reports conflicting - with some stories saying the bombing was done by an explosive device in the luggage, while eye witness statements imply a suicide bomber.

Date and timing points to Iran - this could be a very clever way for another group to set up the Iranians as the guilty party. Mossad will have to work very hard to run the true perpetrators to ground.

India-Pakistan
ATC rejects Mumbai attacks commission probe result
[Dawn] The Anti-Terrorist Court (ATC) trying suspects accused of criminal masterminding the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai has decided that the findings of a commission that visited India to gather evidence cannot be used in the case, a defence lawyer on Tuesday said.

Riaz Akram Cheema said the court found that the report by the eight-member commission had no legal value because the commission did not cross-examine four witnesses in India.

The court is trying seven suspects, including the alleged commander of the banned group Lashkar-e-Taiba
...the Army of the Pure, an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI...
, which has been blamed for the 2008 attacks that killed 166 people.

The Pak commission that went to India in March included defence lawyers and prosecutors. But Cheema said India did not allow them to cross-examine key witnesses, including the lone attacker who survived.

Tuesday, wounding a foreign doctor working on a polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. immunisation campaign and a local driver, officials said.

The shooting, which happened in the low-income eastern neighbourhood of Soharb Ghoth, was the latest sign of disturbing resistance to a widely publicised three-day vaccination campaign, which began Monday.

The Taliban have banned immunisations in the northwest, condemning the campaign as a cover for espionage since a Pak doctor was tossed in the slammer

using a hepatitis vaccination programme.

"A WHO vehicle was fired upon with gunshots. One international staff and one local driver were maimed in the incident," Maryam Yunus, spokeswoman for the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
' World Health Organization, told AFP.

She said the doctor from Ghana and the Pak driver had been transferred to a private hospital in the southern port city where their condition was stable.

"They are out of danger," Yunus said.

Attacks on foreigners are rare in Bloody Karachi, but parts of the city are highly volatile. Ethnic, sectarian and politically-linked violence has killed at least 740 people in the city so far this year alone, rights activists say.

Police blamed the shooting on two Afghan men. Soharb Ghoth neighbourhood is home to thousands of Afghan refugees and migrants from northwest Pakistain looking for work in what is Pakistain's largest city, with a population of 18 million.

Local cop shoppe chief Mohammad Sultan said the doctor could have been targeted deliberately, because he had been working in the neighbourhood for about three months.

"It could be related to the polio campaign, as there is resistance in the population against it. We are, however, still investigating the real motives,"Sultan told AFP.

The UN staff were travelling in an unmarked, white double-cabin pick-up.

Local TV channels broadcast footage of bullet holes in the vehicle.

A health expert, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media, said the attack was the latest in an alarming trend of violence against polio workers.

He said there had been threats and announcements in mosques branding the vaccine anti-Islam and blamed "a new wave of attacks on polio workers" on the CIA's use of Pak doctor Shakeel Afridi to help find bin Laden.

The doctor was jailed for 33 years in May after helping the CIA find Osama bin Laden using a hepatitis vaccination programme as cover.

"It has become a very serious and critical issue. People suspect foreigners involvement in the programme and fake campaign by Afridi has given further credence to conspiracy theory," he said.

He said polio workers were beaten in the capital Islamabad on Monday, a team fired on in the southern town of Jacobabad and a cycle of violence stolen in the southwestern town of Ziarat.

"It is an alarming situation because neither the government, nor international aid agencies have a clear strategy to deal with this issue," he said.

WHO said later Tuesday that there was currently "no evidence to suggest that this was a deliberate or targeted attack against polio eradication efforts or WHO".

Pakistain is one of only three countries where polio remains endemic, along with Afghanistan and Nigeria.

The Taliban ban and insecurity have forced officials to postpone inoculations in parts of Pakistain's northwestern tribal belt, jeopardising the health of more than 350,000 children.

Pakistain says 34 million children under five will be targeted in the campaign that runs until Wednesday.

The highly infectious disease affects mainly the under-fives and can cause paralysis in a matter of hours. Some cases can be fatal.

The Lancet medical journal has said vaccination problems led last year to Pakistain's highest number of polio cases in a decade, 198, compared to 144 in 2010.

That's why: they're Shiites, next thing to infidels.
The Shia Action Committee was protesting the alleged ban of the website www.shiakilling.com, when they were stopped at downtown Bloody Karachi's Numaish Chowrangi, DawnNews reported on Tuesday.

The protestors, who were reportedly in hundreds, set off from Shah-e-Khurasan area (Jamshed Town), chanting anti-government slogans on their way. When they reached Numaish Chowrangi, police tried to stop them, which led to an altercation between both parties. Police officials then resort to gun sex. While the crowd dispersed to the nearby alleyways, some still managed to move past Numaish and continued with their agitation.

A website, which monitors and maintains a "death count" of Pak Shia Moslems targeted in sectarian violence, has been banned by the Pakistain Telecommunication Authority, which operates on the directives of the Ministry of Information. Upon attempting to access the website, users are met with a "Access denied" message, a usual occurrence for banned websites.

Pakistain has previously banned social networking websites including Facebook and Twitter for carrying content considered disrespectful towards Islam and the Holy Prophet ((PTUI!)).

Burqa-clad militants storm police station
BANNU: Two burqa-clad bully boyz stormed a police arsenal and special branch office here on Monday and both of them were killed in an ensuing clash with police.

According to officials, the two bombers, who were wearing boom jackets, entered the armoury and special branch office in the old building of the city cop shoppe and fired at the guard, injuring him seriously.

They hurled grenades and held eight coppers hostage.

DIG Nisar Ahmad Tanoli and DPO Waqar Ahmad reached the place with a heavy contingent of police which encircled the area. Army and FC platoons aided by armoured personnel carriers were also called in as bully boyz holed up inside the building.

Security personnel rubbed out one of the attackers while the other went kaboom!". Two coppers were maimed but the eight hostages were safely rescued.

DPO Waqar Ahmad told news hounds that the bully boyz had come to the area on cycle of violences and their handlers had left after dropping them near the special branch office.

He said the attack might have been carried out to avenge a police operation against bully boyz in Bannu district.

'IDF intercepted over 10 terror setups in Sinai'
MI Chief Kochavi tells Knesset's Defense Committee military has been able to intercept mobilization of multiple terror cells based in peninsula

The IDF has been able to thwart the mobilization of over 10 terror cells based in the Sinai Peninsula, Director of Military Intelligence Major-General Aviv Kochavi told the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Tuesday.

In a briefing to committee members, Kochavi said that the IDF currently has multiple would-be terror infrastructures under surveillance.

According to Jerusalem sources, the growing terror infrastructure in Sinai was one of the subjects discussed during US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

"It may take more time, I can't give you an exact number, but it will happen," he said.

The MI chief further warned that the security concerns evident in Sinai may soon echo in the Golan Heights, as a result of the Islamic Jihad's tighting grip on Syria.

Still, Kochavi said that chances of an imminent armed conflict between Israel and Syria are low.

Meanwhile,

Another Cyber Espionage Campaign Targeting Iran
Security experts say more than 800 hit by operation, including infrastructure companies, financial services firms and Mideast embassies

Security experts have uncovered an ongoing cyber espionage campaign targeting Iran and other Middle Eastern countries that they say stands out because it is the first such operation using communications tools written in Persian.

Israeli security company Seculert and Russia's Kaspersky Lab, said on Tuesday that they identified more than 800 victims of the operation. The targets include critical infrastructure companies, engineering students,
Engineering students? The trailing daughters' university provides antivirus services for free, to protect againt the university's system being shut down. I can see Emglish lit. majors missing something technical, but engineering students??
financial services firms and government embassies located in five Middle Eastern countries, with the majority of the infections in Iran.

Seculert and Kaspersky declined to identify specific targets of the campaign, which they believe began at least eight months ago. They said they did not know who was behind the attacks or if was a nation state.

"It's for sure somebody who is fluent in Persian, but we don't know the origin of those guys," said Seculert Chief Technology Officer Aviv Raff.
Plenty of native Farsi speakers in Israel. Plenty in America, too, some of whom are Jewish.
The Mahdi Trojan lets remote attackers steal files from infected PCs and monitor emails and instant messages, Seculert and Kaspersky said. It can also record audio, log keystrokes and take screen shots of activity on those computers.

The firms said they believed multiple gigabytes of data have been uploaded from targeted machines.

"Somebody is trying to build a dossier of a larger scale on something," Raff said. "We don't know what they are going to do at the end."

Researchers have previously said that nation states were almost certainly behind the Flame virus, which was discovered earlier this year, and Duqu, which was uncovered in 2011.

Seculert and Kaspersky dubbed the campaign Mahdi, a term referring to the prophesied redeemer of Islam, because evidence suggests the attackers used a folder with that name as they developed the software to run the project.

They also included a text file named mahdi.txt in the malicious software that infected target computers.
It's hit Israel, too:
Russia's Kaspersky computer security lab and Israel's Securlet announced Tuesday that they have discovered that a "Trojan Horse" that has been active in the Mideast for months has infected computers of senior Israeli officials.

According to the security companies, the program collected data, screen shots, and sensitive material from individuals involved with national infrastructures, financial entities, and academic institutions. The experts discovered parts of the program that indicate that it originated in Iran.

18th Syrian General Defects to Turkey
[An Nahar] A Syrian general and several soldiers crossed into Turkey on Monday, a Turkish diplomat told Agence La Belle France Presse, bringing the number of defections by generals from Bashir al-Assad's embattled regime to at least 18.

Turkey has become home to dozens of defectors who have crossed the border and formed the Free Syrian Army in opposition to Assad's regime.

The latest defection brings to 18 the number of generals who have fled into Turkey since the conflict in Syria erupted in March last year.

The diplomat, who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity, said Tuesday that almost 42,700 Syrian refugees are now living in camps near the border with Syria.

"We are seeing an increase in the number of Syrians arriving in Turkey, whether they are civilians or military."

Syria says security forces push back Damascus rebels
[Al Ahram] Syrian security forces have confronted fighters who infiltrated the capital Damascus
...Capital of the last remaining Baathist regime in the world...
and forced many of them to flee, Information Minister Omran Zoabi said on Tuesday, denying media reports which he said "do not reflect facts on the ground".

"What is happening is that some armed elements infiltrated Damascus and tried to make a move in one of the areas. But the security forces surrounded them and dealt with them - and are still dealing with them," he told Rooters.

"Some (fighters) have surrendered and others escaped on foot and by car and are firing randomly in the air to frighten people," Zoabi said.

Israeli intel chief: jihadis head for Syria border
[Al Ahram] Israel's military intelligence chief on Tuesday warned that global jihadists have moved into Syrian territory bordering the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights and could soon use the area to stage attacks on the Jewish state.
Maj. Gen. Aviv Kochavi told a parliamentary committee that the Islamic Islamic fascisti have taken advantage of the chaos created by the Syrian civil war to approach the Golan area.

He said Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Light of the Alawites...
has pulled troops out of the Golan to fight rebels in other parts of the country, after concluding that the likelihood of war with Israel at this time is low.

The intelligence chief told politicians that a power vacuum has created a possible arena for anti-Israel operations, like Egypt's Sinai desert.

"The Golan area is liable to become an arena of operations against Israel in much the same way the Sinai is today, and that's a result of the increasing entrenchment of Global Jihad in Syria," he said.

His comments were relayed by a participant in the meeting, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting was closed.

Syria uses helicopters to battle rebels in capital
[Al Ahram] Syrian government forces backed by helicopter gunships battled rebels in heavy festivities in Damascus
...The place where Pencilneck hangs his brass hat...
, a clear escalation in the most serious fighting in the capital since the country's conflict began last year, activists said.
The fierce festivities, which have raged over the past three days in at least four neighborhoods across the city, were the latest sign that Syria's civil war is moving ever closer to the heart of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Despoiler of Deraa...
's regime. Government forces have already thrown tanks and armored personnel carriers into the battle in the capital, but the use of airpower reflected the intensity and seriousness of the fighting.

The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and Damascus-based activist Maath al-Shami said Tuesday's festivities were concentrated in the neighborhoods of Kfar Souseh, Nahr Aisha, Midan and Qadam.

"I can hear cracks of gunfire and some kabooms from the direction of Midan," al-Shami told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named via Skype. "Black smoke is billowing from the area."

Syria's state-run news agency
...and if you can't believe the state-run news agency who can you believe?...
said troops were still chasing "terrorist elements" who had fled from Nahr Aisha to Midan. Syria refers to its opponents as terrorists.

An amateur video showed two armored personnel carriers with heavy machineguns on top along with troops who were said to be advancing in an empty road toward Midan on Tuesday.

Activists have dubbed the fighting in the capital the "Damascus Volcano" in what appears to be an attempt to bring the fighting into Syria's seat of power.

The festivities are the most sustained and widespread in the capital since the start of the uprising against Assad in March last year and a crackdown that activists say has claimed the lives of more than 17,000 people. In the past, festivities happened at night in the capital. Now, the fighting rages during the day -- a sign of the growing strength and boldness of the rebels.

That has brought the bloodshed to the heart of Damascus -- and Syria's largest city, Aleppo
...For centuries, Aleppo was Greater Syria's largest city and the Ottoman Empire's third, after Constantinople and Cairo. Although relatively close to Damascus in distance, Aleppans regard Damascenes as country cousins...
-- which are both home to elites who have benefited from close ties to Assad's regime, as well as merchant classes and minority groups who worry their status will suffer if Assad falls.

Activists also reported festivities and shelling in the rebel held towns of Rastan and Talbiseh in the central province of Homs.

One amateur video posted online showed helicopters firing missiles in Talbiseh, while another video showed gunnies attacking what appeared to be a government position in Rastan. The caption said the rebels were carrying "intensive operations" in support of Damascus and Homs.

As the violence across the country has spiraled out of control, diplomatic efforts to halt the bloodshed have seemingly come to a dead end.

Much of the international community has condemned Assad's crackdown, but world powers remain deeply divided over who is responsible and how to stop the fighting. The U.S. and many Western nations have called on Assad to leave power, while Russia, China and Iran have stood by the regime.

UN chief the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon
... of whom it can be said to his credit that he is not Kofi Annan...
was headed to China on Tuesday as part of a diplomatic push to get Beijing and Moscow to back a tougher response to attacks by Assad's regime. Ban's trip comes ahead of a UN Security Council vote this week. A Western-backed resolution calls for sanctions and invokes Chapter 7 of the UN Charter.

A Chapter 7 resolution authorizes actions that can ultimately include the use of military force, which US administration and European officials -- for now -- are playing down as a possibility.

Ban was to hold talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao
...Hu has been involved in the Communist party bureaucracy for most of his adult life, meaning his viewpoint has a lot more theory than it does practice. He espouses a Harmonious Society approach, suggesting everybody should play nice or they'll be shot...
on Wednesday, with Syria expected to top the agenda.

UN special envoy Kofi Annan
...Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh and so far the worst Secretary-General of the UN. Annan and the UN were the co-recipients of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize for something or other that probably sounded good at the time. In December 2004, reports surfaced that Kofi's son Kojo received payments from the Swiss company Cotecna, which had won a lucrative contract under the UN Oil-for-Food Program. Kofi Annan called for an investigation to look into the allegations, which stirred up the expected cesspool but couldn't seem to come up with enough evidence to indict Kofi himself, or even Kojo...
, meanwhile, was meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin
...Second President of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Because of constitutionally mandated term limits he is the current Prime Minister of Russia. His sock puppet, Dmitry Medvedev, was installed in the 2008 presidential elections. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law. During his eight years in office Russia's economy bounced back from crisis, seeing GDP increase, poverty decrease and average monthly salaries increase. During his presidency Putin passed into law a series of fundamental reforms, including a flat income tax of 13%, a reduced profits tax, and new land and legal codes. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. in Moscow to discuss the conflict. Annan is seeking support for his faltering peace plan, which put some 300 UN observers in Syria to monitor the implementation of a cease-fire.

That truce never took hold, however, and the monitors have been largely confined to their hotel for weeks because of the escalating bloodshed. The mission expires on July 20.

The leader of Syria's outlawed Moslem Brüderbund, Mohamad Riyad Shukfa, criticized Annan's six-point plan and the observer mission, saying "the Syrian people have no faith in it."

"We would like this mission to leave Syria soon because it gives more chances to Assad to kill," Shukfa said from Turkey, where the Brotherhood, which was crushed in 1982 by Assad's late father and predecessor, Hafez Assad, is holding a meeting.

In Tehran, Iranian Foreign Ministry front man Ramin Mehmanparast warned against foreign intervention in Syria. Iran, one of Syria's strongest allies, offered to mediate and host a meeting between Syrian government and rebels to help resolve the conflict.

"Iran is prepared to use all its capacities to resolve the crisis in Syria," Mehmanparast told news hounds Tuesday.

The Syrian opposition is unlikely to accept Iran, which has provided Assad with military and political backing for years, as a mediator.

The Observatory and al-Shami said helicopters fired heavy machine guns during overnight festivities in the neighborhoods of Qadam and Hajar al-Aswad.

An amateur video showed a military helicopter flying over the Damascus neighborhood of Qaboun. The narrator could be heard saying "aerial bombardment" of Qaboun, although the helicopter was not seen firing in the 30-second video. The authenticity of the video could not be independently verified.

Another activist in the capital, who asked to be identified only as Bayan because of fear for her safety, said troops fired mortar rounds at the neighborhoods of Qaboun and Jobar, causing a major fire near Jobar's Grand Mosque.

"People are trying to extinguish the fire with water hoses or buckets filled with water," Bayan said via Skype. She added that government troops had set up checkpoints around Damascus and were searching cars and demanding passengers' identity cards.

Al-Shami said residents of hard-hit areas were fleeing to safer neighborhoods where they were staying at schools and mosques. He added that many of the maimed were being treated at secret hospitals for fear they might be tossed in the clink
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
if taken to official ones.

The Local Coordination Committees activist group reported heavy shelling of rebel-held areas in the central province of Homs where they said there were casualties.

As the violence has escalated, the number of Syrians fleeing the bloodshed has swelled to some 112,000, according to United Nations

#1  This is a clear sign of impending disaster for the Syrian regime, since we know any military with hair on its chest fights exclusively using infantry. For instance, Coalition forces in Iraq were infantry-only - helicopter gunships, jet fighters, bombers, AC-130's, A-10's, drones, MLRS's, tracked howitzers played no part in the conflict, since our infantry commanders viewed the supporting arms the way a fish views a bicycle.

#2  If "Pencil Neck" falls just as occured in Egypt anf Lybia, israel will be bracketed on two fronts by Islamic extremist nations. Only extremists in Syria will have access to chemical weapons arsonal. Israel will have to nuke Damascus WHEN major jihad begins.

FSA Says Battle to 'Liberate' Damascus Has Begun as Choppers Strafe Capital
Syrian rebels declared the battle to "liberate" Damascus
...The place where Pencilneck hangs his brass hat...
has begun as heavy fighting
... as opposed to the more usual light or desultory fighting...
raged across the capital on Tuesday and Russia said it will do everything to support a tattered peace plan.

The proclamation by the Free Syrian Army came as U.N.-Arab League
...an organization of Arabic-speaking states with 22 member countries and four observers. The League tries to achieve Arab consensus on issues, which usually leaves them doing nothing but a bit of grimacing and mustache cursing...
envoy Kofi Annan
...Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh and so far the worst Secretary-General of the UN. Kofi Annan called for an investigation to look into the allegations, which stirred up the expected cesspool but couldn't seem to come up with enough evidence to indict Kofi himself, or even Kojo...
said the 16-month-old crisis, which is increasingly being described as a civil war, was at a "critical time."

The front man for the FSA's Joint Command, Colonel Kassem Saadeddine, said in Homs that "victory is nigh" and that the fighting would not stop until the whole of the capital has been conquered.

"We have transferred the battle from Damascus province to the capital," said Saadeddine. "We have a clear plan to control the whole of Damascus. We only have light weapons, but it's enough."

"Expect surprises," he added, without elaborating.

Fighting between Assad's forces and the Free Syrian Army has raged in Damascus since Sunday, and the FSA announced on Monday the launch of a full-scale offensive dubbed "the Damascus volcano and earthquakes of Syria."

Hours later, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said regime helicopters fired into Qaboon district of Damascus, while festivities broke out in al-Midan and al-Hajar al-Aswad neighborhoods.

"Regime forces used helicopters equipped with heavy machineguns to strike the district of Qaboon," the Observatory said.

An activist in the capital told Agence La Belle France Presse that FSA fighters had blocked an attempt by the army to storm Qaboon.

"The army tried to raid the neighborhood yesterday but the FSA stopped them," said the activist, who calls himself Omar.

Backed by tanks and low-flying helicopter gunships, the army randomly pounded the neighborhood with mortars and heavy machinegun fire, he said.

An activist who said he was in al-Midan said via Skype that the army was shelling the neighborhood "hysterically."

"The collapsing regime has gone mad," said the man, who identified himself as Abu Musab.

"The army has tried to storm the district, but the Free Syrian Army has stopped them. So they have intensified their shelling. They are shelling everything," he said, adding Ghazwat Badr mosque had been destroyed.

Witnesses also reported heavy machinegun fire in Sabaa Bahrat Square in the heart of Damascus, as well as in Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
Street, a main road nearby.

The regime vowed on Monday not to surrender the capital.

"You will never get Damascus," read the headline in Al-Watan newspaper, which is close to the regime.

In that context, the Israeli army's intelligence chief said Assad has moved troops from the Golan Heights next to Israel toward Damascus and other internal conflict zones.

"Assad has removed many of his forces that were in the Golan Heights to the areas of (internal) conflict," Major General Aviv Kochavi told MPs.

"He's not afraid of Israel at this point, but mainly wants to augment his forces around Damascus," Kochavi said, while saying the "probability of a conflict between Israel and Syria as a last resort for Assad is low."
