[BBC.CO.UK] The four-day siege involving suspected Islamist forces of Evil at Nairobi's Westgate shopping centre is over, Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta says.
Five attackers were rubbed out by troops and 11 suspects were in jug, he said in a TV address to the nation.
President Kenyatta said that several bodies - including those of "terrorists" - were thought to be trapped under rubble after three floors of the building collapsed
Kenya has "shamed and defeated our attackers" but the "losses are immense", he said, confirming that 61 civilians and six soldiers had died.
Three days of national mourning have been declared, starting on Wednesday.
President Kenyatta said that several bodies - including those of "terrorists" - were thought to be trapped under rubble after three floors of the building collapsed following a blaze on Monday.
Some 175 people were maimed in the attack; 62 people remain in hospital and many others are being treated for shock and are undergoing counselling.
"I promise that we shall have a full accountability for the mindless destruction, deaths, pain, loss and suffering we have all undergone as a national family.
"These cowards will meet justice, as will their accomplices and patrons, wherever they are," he said.
At least 18 foreigners are among the dead, including six Britons, as well as citizens from La Belle France, Canada, the Netherlands, Australia, Peru, India, Ghana, South Africa and China.
Continued threat
The forces of Evil stormed the Westgate centre on Saturday, throwing grenades and firing on shoppers and staff.
Somali Islamist group al-Shabaab ... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda... said it had carried out the attack in retaliation for Kenyan army operations in Somalia.
The president said he could not confirm reports that a Brit and two or three US citizens were involved in the attacks, but he said forensic experts were carrying out tests to ascertain their nationalities.
In an interview with the US TV programme PBS Newshour, Kenya's Foreign Minister Amina Mohamed said the Americans were 18 or 19 years old, of Somali or Arab origin.
Her remarks have fuelled media speculation about the possible involvement of Samantha Lewthwaite, the widow of one of the men who carried out attacks on London's transport system on 7 July 2005.
But a Twitter post from al-Shabaab on Tuesday evening dismissed claims that women were involved in the attack. The group said it "categorically" denied involvement of any woman".
The group said: "We have an adequate number of young men who are fully committed and we do not employ our sisters in such military operations."
President Barack Obama Republicans can come along for the ride, but they've got to sit in the back... called the events in Nairobi a "terrible outrage" and said the US was providing all the co-operation it could to Kenya.
Somali Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon said those behind the attacks "must be held accountable."
Al-Shabaab, which is linked to al-Qaeda, has repeatedly threatened attacks on Kenyan soil if Nairobi did not pull its troops out of Somalia.
There are about 4,000 Kenyan troops in the south of Somalia as part of an African Union ...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful... force supporting Somali government forces.
Al-Shabaab is fighting to create an Islamic state in Somalia.
Despite being pushed out of key cities in the past two years, it remains in control of smaller towns and large swathes of the countryside.
UN special representative for Somalia Nicholas Kay called on Tuesday for a fresh surge in African troops to Somalia to counter an estimated 5,000 al-Shaboobs.

The governments of every nation that lost citizens in that attack should promise to send a fully-armed division of troops to Kenya for the sole purpose of invading Somalia and killing every single al shablab member in a truly agonizing and embarrassing manner. [Al Ahram] Sudanese police fired tear gas on Monday to disperse hundreds of people protesting in the capital Khartoum against the lifting of petrol subsidies by veteran President Omar Hassan al-Bashir.
Bashir, in power since 1989, has avoided an "Arab spring" uprising of the sort that has unseated other rulers in the region but many in Sudan complain about soaring food prices, corruption, violent conflicts and high unemployment.
The government almost doubled prices for fuel and cooking gas on Monday to bring its budget under control. The Arab African country lost three-quarters of its oil reserves - its main source of revenues and of dollars for food imports - when South Sudan became independent in 2011.
Within hours of petrol stations adjusting their price displays, some 800 protesters gathered in the centre of Khartoum, shouting "No, No to price hikes".
Others called on Bashir to resign, yelling "go, go".
Police arrived, firing tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Late on Sunday, Bashir held a televised news conference lasting two hours to defend his abolition of fuel subsidies. He promised to use much of the money saved to help the poor and increase salaries for civil servants.
But many Sudanese have gorwn impatient with years of what they see as economic crises caused by mismanagement and U.S. trade sanctions.
"The government ... has no idea of what people are going through. I am ready to join any protest against the lifting," said 41-year old Ahmed Iassan, an unemployed worker.

In their fanaticism they might not be the brightest in the world, but they did see the Americans systematically hunt down and kill OBL and in doing so degrade a lot of their fellow jihadists with extreme effectiveness. That usually induces people to try for other lower hanging fruit. They also understand the 'game' that as long as they 'do in Rome as the Romans do', its a safe haven that provides food, shelter, etc beyond anything they could obtain in the 'old country'. Then there's the victim claim which pretty much is reserved for the indigenous people rather than new comers. [Daily Nation (Kenya)] The third day of the Westgate Mall siege was marked by heavy gunfire throughout the day, about 20 powerful kabooms in the early afternoon and part of the shopping complex on fire.
The blasts happened at 1.18 pm and were immediately followed by a fire in the building with thick black smoke then rising from one spot in the roof of the complex on the side close to Ukay Centre, another office and shopping complex.
There were at first 10 loud kabooms- possibly the biggest since the siege started on Saturday afternoon- which were followed by small arms fire and then by another 10 similarly loud kabooms.
It is understood that the rescue team set up bombs on parts of the building in an attempt to gain entry into the areas still occupied by the terrorists.
There had been sustained gunfire earlier in the day at 6.30 am, about 8.30 am. and there was more-suggesting an exchange between the bully boyz and the rescuers.
This continued intermittently from 4.05 pm with Nation news hounds at the scene saying the longest shooting lasted seven minutes.
Israeli and Kenyan Special Forces are working with officers from the United States Federal Bureau of Investigations in the assault on areas of the mall still occupied by the bully boyz and their unknown number of hostages.
It was also apparent that while the bully boyz have some hostages, there were other people in the building who weren't under their control.
Businesses in the vicinity of the mall in Westlands were closed immediately, with workers at the nearby Sarit Centre directed to leave and security guards left. They turned away everybody.
Peponi Road remained closed and the Interior Ministry also announced that civilians ought to keep off Mwanzi Road, Forces Lane and Ring Road Parklands.
"Only emergency services allowed. Stay away for your own safety," the ministry warned.

NAIROBI, Kenya -- Hundreds of elite Kenyan troops -- backed by armored personnel carriers, helicopters, planes and security officials from Israel, France, Britain and the United States -- have amassed against a small group of Islamist militants holed up in a shopping mall where dozens of people were massacred over the weekend. But as night fell on Monday and a thick funnel of black smoke churned from the Westgate mall in central Nairobi, the militants were still holding their ground.
"This will end tonight," Kenyan officials had declared as a major rescue operation got under way on Sunday evening. But shortly thereafter, three Kenyan commandos were shot dead at close range and several hostages were killed as Kenyan forces tried to move in on militants hiding in a dark corner of the mall, Western officials said.
When The Standard, one of Kenya's biggest newspapers, hit the stands on Monday with the headline, "The Final Assault," the sound of gunfire and explosives was still echoing through central Nairobi, spreading even more fear among Kenyans, who have been shocked and demoralized by the events over the past three days.
Several witnesses said that some of the ringleaders of the assault -- in which masked gunmen moved methodically through the crowded mall on Saturday, killing more than 60 men, women and children -- may have escaped during the initial confusion. One witness said that an assailant quickly tore off his clothes and changed into a new outfit before running out, hands raised, blending in with a crowd of fleeing civilians.
Security officials in Nairobi said that two women, who were among the militants and who appeared to be directing other assailants during the killings, managed to escape after the initial stage of the attack. That assertion raised fears that well-trained terrorists could be on the loose in Nairobi. Several witnesses have said that some of the militants were clearly not African and may have been from Western countries, but American officials said they could not confirm that.
Kenya's security forces have a reputation for being lowly paid and underequipped, and they seem to have been ill-prepared for a complex hostage situation against die-hard militants like this. On the other hand, the reason the Shaboobs are attacking Kenya is because the Kenyans (and Ethiopians) threw them out of Somalia. The African Union forces weren't handling the job, and the Somali forces were pathetic.
According to several Western officials, the Kenyans initially rebuffed offers of assistance from the American government and turned instead to the Israelis, who dispatched advisers from the Israeli Defense Forces. The Entebbe approach versus the Boston Marathon approach.
Those advisers are working closely with the Kenyan commandos inside the mall, helping plan specific tactical operations, though officials said the Israeli advisers had not engaged in any combat and had stayed out of public view. "Let us know if you need any help!"

The American, French and British officials are left with a more back-seat role from a command center just down the street from the Westgate mall, helping the Kenyans with the investigation of the attack and some intelligence matters, a high-ranking Kenyan official said Monday.
"There's too much consultation going on," said the Kenyan official, who had not been authorized to speak publicly. "This should have been a small rescue operation, not preparing for war."
On Monday afternoon, Kenyan security officials acknowledged that the effort to end the standoff was taking longer than expected but said that it would be over soon.
"We are in charge of the situation, our people are safe, and hostages have been evacuated," said Joseph Ole Lenku, Kenya's interior cabinet secretary. Kenyan officials have said that around 10 Kenyan soldiers were injured in combat; Mr. Ole Lenku said that he was "not aware" if any had been killed.

Miss Lewthwaite, the former wife of Germaine Lindsay, who detonated the Russell Street Tube bomb that killed 26 innocent people, gave interviews after the London attacks in which she said the actions of her ex-husband and father of two of her children were "abhorrent".
Yet in the diary, she wrote that the "devoted" wife of a "mujihadeen" must realise that her "life in the hereafter promised to be sweeter" because of her husband's "sacrifice", said a police officer. The entry, written in a tatty A5 exercise book, added that such a wife must be "discrete" (sic), "obedient" and must understand that her husband's "calling" meant that both he and his wife would be cut off from their families.
The officer said he believed the exercise book was in the possession of Scotland Yard officers helping Kenyan police investigate a terrorist cell believed to include Lewthwaite and at least two other British jihadists. A woman whose picture in a fake South African passport closely resembles Lewthwaite is wanted by police over her alleged connections to a group planning attacks against Westerners in Kenya.
One alleged cell member, Jermaine Grant, from Newham, east London, has been charged with possessing materials with the intent to create a bomb.
During a raid on his flat in a rundown suburb of Mombasa, on Kenya's coast, police discovered chemicals similar to those used by the July 7 bombers.
There were strong links between Grant and Lewthwaite, it emerged on Monday, as police said that a house in an upmarket area of Mombasa was rented by Grant on behalf of Lewthwaite. His co-accused, Fouad Abubakr Manswab, was a close associate of a woman known to police only as Nassim, who was a friend to Lewthwaite and in whose house the diary was found. Nassim is the widow of Musa Hussein Abdi, an al-Qaeda agent killed in Mogadishu last year.
The day after Kenyan police arrested Grant and Manswab, they questioned Lewthwaite at Nassim's house and took copies of her passport, a fake in the name of Natalie Faye Webb. They did not arrest her because they believed she was an innocent tourist. When they returned the next day to ask to see her laptop, she had fled. Police then found the diary.
Police believe that the terrorist cell has 30 members and have been told that several bombs are "already out there" among "sympathisers" in Mombasa. They have been told that the targets include the United Nations headquarters in Nairobi and a shopping centre called Village Market that is popular with the capital's expatriates.
Police are also searching for a Kenyan associate of Lewthwaite's, thought to go by the name Abdi Wahid, who was pictured with her as they crossed from Tanzania to Kenya in August last year.

They are also charged with possessing the rifle ammunition without authority.
The brothers spoke only to confirm their names, dates of birth and their address in Stratford, east London, which played host to the 2012 Olympic Games.
It is alleged they drove from Stratford to Calais, then flew from Lyon in southeastern La Belle France to Turkey, before travelling over the border into Syria.
It is also alleged that officers who stopped their car in Dover also found a balaclava, some "heavy-duty clothing", six mobile phones and a SIM card inside a Koran.
Mohommod Hassin Nawaz faces a third charge, of possessing a laptop containing material "of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism".
It is claimed that this includes four copies of the al-Qaeda terror network's online magazine Inspire.
The brothers were remanded in jug until October 21, when they are to appear at the Old Bailey in London, England's central criminal court.
Separately, police said that a 37-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman arrested in Essex, northeast of London, on Wednesday had been released without charge.

A man was found tortured and decapitated in Hidalgo de Parral municipality Sunday. The victim was found on a road between the villages of Bufalo and Allende. The victim's head was not found at the scene.

Sources in police said that a heavy contingent of Rangers and Karachi police with an armoured personnel carrier arrived here from Karachi before dawn and went straight to Abdul Salam village, where they rounded up the eight suspects after sealing off the village.
Then they raided a place nearby Nisar Kaimkhani village but failed to find the suspects they were looking for there, said the sources.
The sources said the law-enforcement personnel carried out raids on a tip-off about the presence in the village of criminals and outlaws who were involved in assassination and extortion in Karachi. The suspects were shifted to some holy man's guesthouse an undisclosed location, said the sources.
The SHO of Jhuddo cop shoppe, Shahnawaz Khaskheli, told journalists that Rangers and Karachi police kept local police away from the areas where they were to conduct the raids and did not even share information about it afterwards. They, therefore, did not know if any arrest had been made or arms recovered, he said.

[Dawn] A bomb targeting police potted at least five people and maimed five others in Pishin district of restive southwest Balochistan ...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it... province on Monday, police said.
The attack was staged in Pishin district, 40 kilometres north of Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province which is racked by a separatist insurgency and sectarian violence.
"The bomb was planted underneath the police van, which went kaboom! while the officials were performing routine checks, killing five people including three coppers and two civilians," district police chief Mehboob Rasheed told AFP.
He said the blast also maimed five people including passengers of a minibus.
A senior local administration official Zahid bin Maqsood confirmed the incident and the casualties.
The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) grabbed credit for the the attack.
"We attacked the police in Balochistan today to avenge killing of our men by the army in a recent staged encounter," in the country's northwest, TTP front man Shahidullah Shahid told news agency AFP by telephone from some holy man's guesthouse an undisclosed location.

[Dawn] While most protests from local Christian community against the deadly Church attack in Beautiful Downtown Peshawar ...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire. remained peaceful, participants in a protest demonstration turned violent as they pelted moving vehicles with stones, torched a cycle of violence and clashed with law-enforcement agencies near Hasan Square on Sunday.
Police and witnesses said that scores of protesters came out of their homes in Essa Nagri, a predominantly Christian neighbourhood, lit bonfires on Sir Shah SLearned Elders of Islamn Road, threw stones on moving vehicles and blocked the road for vehicular traffic.
The situation caused a traffic mess, as vehicles coming from Liqauatabad towards Hasan Square were diverted from Baloch Hotel near Essa Nagri.
A parked cycle of violence, owned by a cameraman of a private TV, was also torched.
The situation continued for two hours and a heavy contingent of police, backed by Rangers, reached the scene and tried to disperse the protesters. However, some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them... some people among the protesters had gun sex and the police also retaliated.
The police resorted to teargas shelling and their armoured personnel carriers entered the congested Essa Nagri area to chase and arrest the protesters.
Witnesses said that the police after a 'door-to-door' search operation tossed in the clink You have the right to remain silent... several people even from the rooftops of their residences.
"The police reacted when the protest turned violent and the protesters had gun sex," said DIG-East Munir Sheikh. "The police also had gun sex and fired teargas shells to disperse the mob and prevent the situation from deteriorating further."
He said that the police chased the protesters and incarcerated Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un! around 23 of them. However, a hangover is the wrath of grapes... on the intervention and assurances of their community leaders, the held suspects were released, said the DIG.
Rescuers said that a passer-by, identified as Abdul Rehman, 41, sustained a bullet wound and was shifted from the troubled area to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Two bombs targeting Sunni mourners in Storied Baghdad ...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate... killed at least 16 people on Monday, officials said, the third attack on a funeral in the Iraqi capital.
The blast in the Adhamiyah area of north Storied Baghdad also maimed at least 20 people, the sources said according to Agence La Belle France Presse.
The incident came after a jacket wallah struck a Sunni funeral in Storied Baghdad on Sunday, killing at least 12 people, and two blasts targeting Shiite mourners in the Sadr City district that killed at least 73 people on Saturday.
Two people were also killed on Monday, following the kaboom of a bomb near an ambulance taking a pregnant woman to hospital that wounding her, police and a doctor said reported AFP.
Mosiul, the capital of the Nineveh province is one of the most dangerous areas of Iraq, with Death Eaters carrying out near-daily attacks.

[Ynet] A Libyan commander and a dozen other fighters from al-Qaeda's Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant have been killed in festivities with rival rebel forces in northern Syria, a monitoring group said, in the latest spate of internecine rebel violence. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said six local fighters were also killed in Sunday's battle with ISIL in Hazano, west of the city of Aleppo and close to the border with Turkey.
Clashes pitting the al-Qaeda-linked ISIL and Nusra Front brigades against less effective but more moderate rebel forces have been intensifying.

Assad ordered me three times to gas my people but I couldn't do it, says former Syrian weapons chief
A former Syrian weapons chief has claimed that he was ordered to by President Assad to use chemical weapons on his own people, but that he could not bring himself to do it. Brigadier-General Zaher al-Sakat, who was in charge of chemical weapons in a contested area of southern Syria, said he was given orders directly from Assad to use deadly gases on rebel soldiers, but replaced the payloads with a harmless substitute.
Apparently he wants to be remembered as the 'good Syrian'...
The general, who has moved to Jordan, also said he believed that the Syrian government had perpetrated 34 chemical weapons attacks, many more than the 14 previously thought.
The Assad regime still vigorously denies that it ever ordered chemical weapons attacks which it blames on rebel forces but it has nonetheless admitted that it possesses chemical weapons, and has agreed a sensitive deal to hand over its arsenal.
But, in an interview with The Sunday Telegraph, general Sakat also claimed that Assad is trying to cheat the deal, brokered by Russia, by sending a portion of his chemical weapons to allies in Lebanon and Iran.
International pressure on Syria came to a head last month after footage emerged of the victims of an attack in the countrys capital city, Damascus. UN inspectors were later allowed to inspect the site, and found evidence that the deadly chemical agent sarin had been used, killing more than 1,400 people.
But the general says that chemical attacks had been ordered and were underway - long before that. In the interview he said that he had been ordered to attack civilian targets in the rebel districts of Sheikh Masqeen, Herak, and Busra, using a mixture of phosgene and other chlorine-based gases, which are less deadly than sarin.
But general Sakat said that before each of the attacks between October 2012 and January 2013 - he secretly replaced the chemical canisters with a mixture of bleach and water, which would still smell like deadly chemical weapons but not kill anybody.
He said: They were completely convinced that this was the same poisonous material. In this way I saved hundreds of lives of children and others.
He then fled to Jordan after he felt his superiors were suspicious of the lack of deaths caused by his attacks, but claims to have been keeping up with the progress of the attacks using a network of informants.
Although Preisdent Assad has agreed to hand over his weapons, and Russian officials have said they are making plans for what to do if Assad cheats the system. But General Sakat said that before a deal was even proposed, the Syrian regime had begun sending its weapons to allies in the militant organisation Hezbollah in Lebanon at four different sites.
A spokesman for the rebel Free Syrian Army, backed the claims, saying: We, along with many other international sources learned, through documents and other evidence about the transfer of Syrian chemical weapons to Hizbollah in Lebanon nearly three months ago.
