How boring. The first twenty or so times there was some decreasing shock value, but that was long ago and in another country.
No doubt someone will explain at some considerable length in Salon to us mere peasants how a bared breast in Times Square solves the problem in the Ukraine...
[An Nahar] Five topless activists from the Femen feminist group protested in New York's Times Square on Thursday to denounce Russia's incursion into Ukraine, asking for tougher U.S. and EU action against Moscow.
The women, whose bare chests were painted blue and yellow -- the color of Ukraine's flag -- hoisted a placard slamming Russian President Vladimir Putin ...Second and fourth President of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead... 's "occupation" of Crimea and another urging, "U.S.-EU, stop talking start acting".
Inna Shevchenko, a Femen leader, told news hounds the protest was "in support of the Ukrainian people, in support of the Ukrainian revolution against Putin, against Russian occupation."
Shevchenko tore up a Russian flag as part of the protest.
The activists called on the United States and European Union ...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing... to impose sanctions "much more serious than just restrictions of visas" and freezing of assets of officials.
The United States on Thursday slapped visa bans on Russians and Ukrainians it blames for destabilizing Ukraine, setting the stage for more sanctions to come.

[An Nahar] A police officer and a civilian died Thursday during festivities in the Venezuelan capital Caracas, bringing to 20 the toll from a month of anti-government demonstrations in the divided country.
The member of the National Guard succumbed in hospital to a gun shot wound to the chest while a man on a cycle of violence also died, State Attorney General Luisa Ortega Diaz told local television.
Authorities said the incident happened when a group of men on motorbikes tried to break through a barricade in the east of Caracas, where improvised blockades have multiplied in recent days.
Witnesses said the shots came from a crowd of protesters. But the president of the National Assembly Diosdado Cabello blamed "snipers" positioned on top of a building.
Street protests erupted in Venezuela on February 4 and have continued every day since in the biggest challenge yet to President Nicolas Maduro's nearly year-old, socialist-inspired government.
Public anger over rampant crime, shortages of basic goods and arrests of protesters have fueled the unrest, which Maduro charges is part of a U.S.-backed plot by "fascists" to destabilize his regime.

[An Nahar] Kosovo's government proposed on Thursday creating a 5,000-strong army to "protect illusory sovereignty" of the ethnic Albanian territory, six years after it seceded from Serbia.
The army would double the size of the current civil emergency Kosovo security force (KPS), said a statement issued after a cabinet session.
Since the end of 1998-1999 war between independent-seeking ethnic Albanian guerrillas and Belgrade forces under the command of late strongman Slobodan Milosevic, NATO ...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Originally it was a mutual defense pact directed against an expansionist Soviet Union. In later years it evolved into a mechanism for picking the American pocket while criticizing the cut of the American pants... has been in charge of maintaining peace and security in Kosovo.
The lightly-armed KPS, created with NATO assistance in 2009, is tasked with dealing with emergency response and protection of public and civil order.
However, there's no worse danger than telling a mother her baby is ugly... this proposal, which would require a change to Kosovo's constitution, would push the KPS into new areas of operation.
Prime Minister Hashim Thaci said the "armed forces of Kosovo will protect the illusory sovereignty, territorial integrity, citizens, property and interests" of Kosovo, a statement said.
The future army will also have 3,000 reservists, with a yearly budget of 65 million euros ($89.5 million).
The forces are expected to be fully operational after 2019, it added.
In Belgrade, Serbia's Minister in charge of Kosovo Aleksandar Vulin said his government would demand an emergency U.N. security Council session to discuss Pristina's move.

[REUTERS] Crimea's parliament voted on Thursday to join Russia, and its Moscow-backed government set a referendum in 10 days, in a dramatic escalation of the crisis over the Ukrainian region that drew a sharp riposte from U.S. President Barack Obama. I am the change that you seek...
Obama ordered sanctions on those responsible for Moscow's military intervention in Ukraine, including bans on travel to the United States and freezing of their U.S. assets.
He echoed European Union ...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing... leaders and the pro-Western government in Ukraine in declaring that the proposed referendum would violate international law.
Obama also held a one-hour call on Thursday with Russian President Vladimir Putin ...Second and fourth President of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead... , their second phone conversation in the past six days, and urged him to accept the terms of a potential diplomatic solution to the crisis.
The sudden acceleration of moves to bring Crimea, which has an ethnic Russian majority and has effectively been seized by Russian forces, formally under Moscow's rule came as EU leaders held an emergency summit, groping for ways to pressure Russia to back down and accept mediation.

Obama's inactions, despite being warned in 2009 that this might happen, has basically stuck him, and the US, in a spot where all we can do is agree to what Putin is doing. Obama had no contingency plans in place, and was completely oblivious to the signs that this was going to be a problem that were evident months ago. That is, evident to anyone that was paying attention - as opposed to screwing up healthcare, using the IRS to target your domestic enemies list, and playing golf and more golf, sending your dogfaced wife on multiple vacations., etc.
Obama is the most corrupt, inept and dangerously incompetent fool we have had in office. And yet the press continues to bury anything that puts him in a bad light, so the low information voters out there go blindly forth, voting for him and his ilk.
Thanks to Obama, our nation has become nothing more than powerless fools with no ability to act militarily or diplomatically, in many areas that will have international repercussions for us and for the world.

[Al Ahram] Turkey's constitutional court ruled Thursday that the legal rights of a former army chief jugged Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out! over an alleged coup plot had been violated, a decision that paves the way for his release.
The country's top court argued that a local tribunal had not "effectively examined" a release request by Ilker Basbug before rejecting it in January, a statement said.
It also ruled that the local court had unduly banned Basbug -- convicted in a mass trial last year -- from appealing the decision, violating his legal rights.
The constitutional court referred the case back to a local court, which could release him, private NTV television said.
The ruling comes after Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan ... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi only they haven't dumped him yet... said in January he was not opposed to the idea of retrials.
Basbug was sentenced to life in prison in 2013 along with hundreds of military officers who were given long jail terms for their role in the so-called "Ergenekon" conspiracy, an alleged plot to overthrow the government.
The military, which sees itself as the guarantor of Turkey's secular principles, has carried out three coups -- in 1960, 1971 and 1980, -- and pressured an Islamist government to step down in 1997.
Erdogan, himself an Islamist, has spent the best part of his 11 years in power trying to curb the military's influence.
But he has recently sought to get the army back on his side as he fights for political survival in a bitter feud with his ally-turned-opponent Fethullah Gulen, whom he accuses of criminal masterminding a graft scandal to topple him.
So hard to run a war, whether external or internal, when all your remaining officers only know how to sing "Islam, Islam uber alles".
In a conciliatory gesture toward the army that further increases the chances of retrials for the hundreds of convicted officers, parliament in February abolished the specially appointed courts that tried them.

[An Nahar] Canada's broadcasting regulator wants to see more locally-made porn on Canadian television, judging by a notice on its website that accuses three channels of failing to meet licensing requirements.
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) said three Toronto-based adult channels have failed to provide a minimum of 35 percent Canadian content.
The rules require a portion of programming to be at least partly written, produced or presented by persons in Canada, in order to bolster the local industry and showcase Canadian content.
A hearing has been scheduled for April 28 to decide whether the broadcasting licenses of AOV Adult Movie Channel, XXX Action Clips and Maleflixxx should be renewed.
The permits are set to expire at the end of August.
CRTC spokeswoman Patricia Valladao told Agence La Belle France Presse they will be asked to justify a renewal of the licenses, adding that "the CRTC has tried several times to bring the company into compliance."
The networks' parent company Channel Zero did not immediately responded to requests for comment.
But others have not been shy to speak out.
The daily National Post satirically lamented the Canadian porn industry's "reluctance to tackle distinctively Canadian issues."
And the tabloid Toronto Sun hailed the CRTC's call for more "naughty Newfoundlanders and Manitoba MILFs."
But the Globe and Mail disagreed, saying: "Unlike sitcoms or dramas, which are potentially filled with meaning that contributes to a social conversation, porn is a generic product whose national origins are as unimportant as those of... a vibrator."
But the newspaper conceded that "a porn shoot hires lighting technicians and camera operators just like any other TV production and, hey, jobs are jobs."
The CRTC also chided the channels for not providing enough closed-captioning and for not alerting the regulator of a change in ownership.

[DAWN] QUETTA: Environmentalists here on Thursday warned that scarcity of water as a result of depleting water table, would in future force citizens of Quetta to migrate to other parts of the country. Where Islam goes, deserts follow.
Environmental experts, policy makers, growers and members of civil society met in Quetta to discuss ways to find a solution to the problem of scarcity of water.
International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) organized a one day seminar to discuss the growing problem in Quetta and other parts of Balochistan, which is Pakistan's most resource-rich province but also least developed.
The speakers feared that scarcity of water would force citizens to migrate if delay and check dams were not constructed on an emergency basis around Quetta.

Let me guess, they'll discover their Palestinian roots?
[An Nahar] Iraqi authorities forced a Storied Baghdad-bound Middle East Airlines plane to turn around Thursday 20 minutes after leaving Beirut because the transport minister's son had missed the flight, MEA said.
The Airlines said the flight took off after repeatedly paging two passengers, who failed to turn up.
"The passengers did not respond to the calls and the plane took off after being delayed by several minutes," said the statement, carried by the state-run National News Agency.
"About 20 minutes after take-off, Middle East Airlines was informed by its Storied Baghdad office that the plane would be prevented from landing by local civil aviation officials if a passenger was not on board."
The missing passenger was identified as Mahdi al-Ameri, son of Iraqi Transport Minister Hadi al-Ameri, and the plane turned back to Beirut.
MEA said it was in touch with Iraqi authorities about the incident, which it said had caused financial losses and disrupted its flight schedule.
In Storied Baghdad, Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki demanded that heads roll over the incident, while the transport ministry denied any wrongdoing.
Maliki ordered that "all those responsible for preventing the plane coming from Beirut from landing in Storied Baghdad" be "dismissed and held responsible," front man Ali Mussawi told Agence La Belle France Presse.
Transport ministry front man Karim Nuri said it was "completely untrue" that the flight was turned back on behalf of Ameri's son.
He insisted that MEA had been previously informed that the plane would not be able to land due to runway maintenance at the Storied Baghdad airport, which is why it was turned back.

[Haartz] A Ukrainian wounded on the streets of Kiev in clashes between protesters and police arrived for treatment in Israel on Wednesday and six more expected were to arrive Thursday, according to a report by Walla news website.
Surgeons at Kaplan Hospital in Rehovot will attempt in the next couple of days to reconstruct the crushed and shrapnel-ridden hand of 20-year-old Alexander S., the first Ukrainian to arrive in Israel after riots and demonstrations that brought down the country's president.
Orthopedic specialist Dr. Alexander Kaban said a team of surgeons will try to repair the bone and restore the soft tissue in the Ukrainian's hand and arm, according to Walla.
He will able to receive the specialized treatment - better than what would be available in Ukraine - due to efforts by Dr. Valeria Bivitzchik,, who flew to Kiev as a volunteer for the International Red Cross. When she returned to Israel for her regular physician's job at Kaplan Babichek petitioned to bring over Alexander for treatment and the hospital agreed.
Six Ukrainians wounded in the bloody confrontations in Kiev last month were expected at Ben Gurion International Airport on Thursday, and more patients will arrive in the near future, Walla reported.
