57 Taliban Insurgents Killed in Faryab Clash
[Tolo News] Fifty-seven Taliban turbans including their commanders were killed in festivities in northern Faryab province in the past week that also claimed the lives of five Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) soldiers and injured eight others, local officials said on Tuesday.

The festivities started when hundreds of turbans attacked the districts of Qaisar and Ghormach last week, which according to Faryab Governor Mohammadullah Batash is still ongoing adding that the responsibility lies with the released Taliban prisoners.

According to Batash, additional security forces have been deployed to the province to continue the ANSF operations.

Clashes in Faryab follow the recent insecurities in Kunduz, Kunar, Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
and Nangarhar

provinces. Officials have blamed the prolonged election process and the ANSF's lack of modern weaponry as reasons for rising insecurities in the country.

Africa Subsaharan
Boko Haram captures more Nigerian towns
[Iran Press TV] Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
gunnies have taken control of more Nigerian towns as they press ahead with their attacks in the African country.

A Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
ian police source said on Tuesday that Boko Haram gunnies moved into the Nigerian town of Ashigashyia overnight Monday, where they killed three people in front of a church, after soldiers sent there fled to take refuge across the border in nearby Cameroon.

Nearly 500 Nigerian soldiers beat feet from the border towns of Ashigashyia and Kerawa over the weekend to take refuge from Boko Haram Takfiris on Cameroonian territory.

On Monday, the Nigerian army dismissed reports that the soldiers had fled, claiming that it was a "tactical maneuver" as they pursued the turbans.

However,
there's more than one way to skin a cat...
the officials in Cameroon said the troops fought a rearguard battle in the town of Gamboru Ngala before pulling out as they were outnumbered.

Boko Haram gunnies also stormed Gamboru Ngala early on Monday and by evening had taken over the cop shoppe, a military barracks and vocational training center, where they had based themselves, according to locals.

According to residents, the gunnies now control at least the town of Buni Yadi in Yobe state as well as Gwoza and Gamboru Ngala in neighboring Borno state.

In the northeastern state of Adamawa, which has been under a state of emergency along with Borno and Yobe states since May last year, local government officials said scores of gunnies attacked the town of Madagali on Saturday, forcing out soldiers and taking over government buildings.

Arabia
8 arrested as Kingdom busts 'IS terror' cell
[ARABNEWS] Security forces in the town of Tamir in northern Riyadh tossed in the slammer
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
eight forces of Evil who tried to lure youth into joining the Islamic State (IS) and the Al-Nusra Front, according to the Interior Ministry.

Ministry front man Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki said the arrests were made on Monday in accordance with a royal decree issued in March ordering punishment for anyone joining or aiding terrorist or murderous Moslem organizations on the government's blacklist.

Showing sympathy or providing moral or financial support to such organizations is also considered a crime, according to the decree.

The arrests followed complaints from several parents that their children were being influenced to join or support such groups, he said.

"These men used to meet at rest houses and farms close to the town and were frequently visited by youth during their meetings, arousing suspicion among residents, who reported the matter to the Interior Ministry," he said.

"The men had convinced several young people to travel to conflict zones where turbans were on the loose," he said.

#3  May get your chance AlanC. Other than ISJV twatting that the space rock and the cube are idols and should be destroyed, I think the playbook goes something like:

Agents enter a town and recruit fighting age men. From those recruits, intel can be gathered about the town's honchos, sympathizers, police, strengths, weaknesses. If they decide they want the town, agents re-enter and buy off or assassinate opponents, form plans with sympathizers (draw a picture of a goat's bottom on your door when the shooting starts so we know you are on our side, or take and hold this intersection). Flip enough area, then blitz.

[ARABNEWS] A special court on Tuesday sentenced five Saudis and one Omani to prison terms ranging between three and 20 years for plotting to murder a police officer, among other charges.

Charges include branding others infidels, issuing religious rulings encouraging dissidence, traveling to Yemen or other conflict zones to joint murderous Moslems in battle and forging documents.

The second defendant, meanwhile, was sentenced to 16 years in prison and a travel ban equal to his prison term after being found guilty of similar charges, such as propagating the belief that fighting in places of civil war was a binding duty on so-called believers. The second defendant had also provided refuge for the first defendant and sent money to other bad boys.

He was also found to be in possession of banned electronic material supporting Al-Qaeda.

The Omani terror suspect will spend seven-and-a-half years in prison for sending SR10,000 in financial aid to terror fighters in Iraq and also possessing banned material on Al-Qaeda, including videos and photos.

The defendant was also found to guilty of being in possession of a machine gun and training others on how to use it.

The man will be deported from the Kingdom following his release from prison.

The fourth defendant was sentenced to 16 years for opposing and criticizing the Kingdom's policies, in addition to other general charges.

He also used to send money to youth who had joined terrorist fighters in other countries, in addition to circulating terrorist literature, including photos and videos of Al-Qaeda.

154 Jamaat, Shibir men face trial
[Bangla Daily Star] A Dhaka court yesterday framed charges against 154 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. in a case filed in connection with torching, vandalising vehicles and attacking police personnel in the capital last year.

Metropolitan Magistrate Tareq Mainul Islam Bhuiyan of Speedy Trial Court-6 also fixed October 12 to start the trial in the case.

However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow...
62 of the accused including, Shibir president Delwar Hossain Sayeedi
...Islamic orator and politician. He was a former Member of Parliament in the National Assembly of Bangladesh from 1996 to 2008, and is one of the most prominent leaders of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami...
and Jamaat Assistant General Secretary Dr Shafiqul Islam Masud, pleaded innocence.

Currently, Delwar and Masud are in police custody while the 60 others are on bail.

The court also cancelled bails to the other 76 accused and issued arrest warrants against them as they failed to appear before it yesterday.

Of the 154 accused, the rest have been absconding since the case was filed with Motijheel Police Station on February 13, 2013.

On that day, the activists of Jamaat and Shibir carried out mayhem in different parts of the capital after they had been barred from holding rallies.

At one point, they attacked several coppers in Agargaon, Paltan, Dainik Bangla intersection, Baitul Mukarram, Fakirapool and Motijheel areas.

They had brought out those rallies, without taking permission from police, to demand the release of Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, facing charges of crimes against humanity.

They also demanded International Crimes Tribunal, which is trying the case against Sayeedi, be dissolved.

Iraq
Iraqi strikes target militants besieging Shiite town
[Al Ahram] The nine strikes by Iraqi warplanes targeted forces from the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group, Colonel Mustafa al-Bayati said.
What aircraft are the Iraqis flying? I don't think their ordered F16s have been delivered -- or have they? As far as I can find on the web, the Iraqis currently have some Cessna propeller-driven trainers, some helicopters and a few C130s. I can't imagine any old Soviet-era planes surviving to now.
IS spearheaded a major offensive in June that overran large areas of Iraq and cut off the Shiite Turkmen-majority town of Amerli.

Time is running out for its residents, who are in major danger both because of their faith, which jihadists consider to be heresy, and their resistance against the fighters, which has drawn deadly retribution elsewhere.

"The people are still besieged and stranded there," said Eliana Nabaa, the spokeswoman for the UN mission in Iraq. There is "no possibility of evacuating them so far," and only limited humanitarian assistance is reaching the town, she said.

UN Iraq envoy Nickolay Mladenov has called for an urgent effort to help the town, saying residents face a "possible massacre."

Nihad al-Bayati, who worked as an engineer at the Tikrit oil refinery but is now fighting to protect his hometown, said its defenders, who are made up of police and volunteers, have repelled two attacks in recent days.

Residents face a major shortage of both food and water, there is no electricity, and the helicopter flights delivering aid and ammunition are targeted with machinegun fire on the way in, and mortar rounds once they land, Bayati said.

"The pilots are suicidal," he said, but the aircraft have been able to land and depart so far.
Brave Iraqi helicopter pilots I would believe. Are the copters also flying combat missions?

15 killed in Baghdad bomb blast
[ARABNEWS] A boom-mobile went kaboom! on Tuesday in a busy area in eastern Baghdad, killing as many as 15 people, officials said, the latest in a series of attacks to shake the Iraqi capital as the government struggles to dislodge Lions of Islam from areas in the country's west and north.

The explosives-laden car went off during the morning rush hour in the main commercial area of the New Baghdad district. It was parked close to outdoor pet and vegetable markets and a traffic police office, a police officer said.

The attack also maimed 31, he added. A medical official confirmed the casualty figures. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

The bombing came a day after a wave of attacks targeted Shiite areas in several cities, including Baghdad, killing as many as 58 people. Among them were 15 worshippers who died in a suicide kaboom at a mosque in the same New Baghdad neighborhood where Tuesday's boom-mobile struck.

In online statements, the Islamic State Death Eater group grabbed credit for Monday's mosque attack and another in the Utaifiya district of Baghdad, where two boom-mobiles tore through a busy commercial area near a crowded restaurant and killed 15 people.

And in two separate tweets, it took credit for boom-mobileings in Karbala and the nearby Hillah city south of Baghdad that together killed at least 23 people on the same day.

The authenticity of the statements and tweets could not be independently verified, but they were posted on a Death Eater website and Twitter accounts frequently used by the group.

No one has grabbed credit for Tuesday's attacks, which bore the hallmarks of Al-Qaeda-inspired Death Eaters. In Iraq's self-ruled northern Kurdish region, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif said the Lions of Islam threaten the whole region, not only Iraq.

"The danger of Islamic State Lions of Islam threatens the Kurdish people of Iraq and Iraqi Shiites as much as it threatens Iraqi Sunnis, other religious minorities in Iraq and all the people in this region," said Zarif, who started an official visit to Iraq on Sunday, at a joint presser with Kurdish regional President Masoud Barzani.

Wednesday, August 27, the 51st day of the Israel-Hamas conflict, and the first since an open-ended truce was agreed by the sides. Hamas killed two Israelis in a mortar attack just before the truce took effect Tuesday evening, bringing the Israeli death toll in Operation Protective Edge to 70, and Israel struck targets in Gaza including several high-rises where it said Hamas had command centers. Hamas hailed victory in the conflict; Israel's cabinet was divided on the truce terms, but was not asked to vote on the deal.
As of this posting, the exact language of the truce has not been released Also as of this posting, the truce has not been broken - of course its only about 10 hours.

PA Security Questions Employees Of Abbas Rival
[IsraelTimes] Two employees at an aid organization run by former Palestinian prime minister Salam Fayyad were questioned by Palestinian Authority security services, apparently under instructions from PA leader Mahmoud Abbas.

The recent questioning of workers at the Future for Palestine fund, which aims to improve the quality of life of disadvantaged Palestinians, was carried out by the Palestinian Preventative Security Service, rather than the regular PA police, Haaretz reported on Tuesday.

Western officials noted that the use of the security service rather than the police indicated that Abbas, a long-time rival of Fayyad, was fully aware of the development.

"There's no doubt that this process was initiated by orders from above," said a Western diplomat. "Such things don't happen just like that."

According to the Jordanian Jafra News website, PA security agents are looking at Fayyad's possible involvement in an alleged coup to overthrow the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank.
Possibly looking for a scapegoat rather than finding scary culprits? Mr. Fayyad always struck me as a technocratic type interested in creating solutions rather than playing local politics.
Two other officials, senior PLO executive committee member Yasser Abed Rabbo and former head of intelligence Tawfiq al Tirawi were also said to face having their bank accounts, personal files, and phone calls "audited."

Last week Abbas ordered his security services to probe Israeli claims that it had uncovered a Hamas plot to topple him and start a third intifada against Israel.

Abbas indicated the report could severely impact the national reconciliation deal signed between Fatah and Hamas in June, saying it represents "a grave threat to the unity of the Palestinian people and its future," the Palestinian news Agency Wafa reported at the time.

Since resigning his position in 2013 over disagreements with Abbas, Fayyad has put his efforts into social activism that has reinforced his status with Western officials.

While the questioning of Fayyad's workers initially looked at the group's funding, much of which is said to come from the United Arab Emirates -- which has poor relations with Abbas -- investigators also grilled the employees about the organization's political aspirations.

The Future for Palestine charity fund was formed several months ago and recently launched a public campaign asking West Bank Palestinians to donate drinking water and equipment on behalf of residents of the war-torn Gaza Strip. The donations were to be delivered to Gaza by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency.

Fayyad played down the significance of the investigation.

"There has been no police search of my office or home," Fayyad said in a statement to Haaretz. "There has been some activity which I am told is part of an effort on the part of the PA to verify compliance with rules and regulations. In the case of the organization I head, Future for Palestine, I am perfectly comfortable that we are in full compliance and with substantial margin to spare."

The PA declined to comment on the investigation but officials indicated that the move was related to a reports at the beginning of the week of a special committee that has been formed to look into the activities of civic action groups in the West Bank and Gaza.

American Woman Is Being Held Hostage In Syria
[Ynet] The Islamic State militant group is holding hostage a young American woman who was doing humanitarian aid work in Syria, a family representative said Tuesday. The 26-year-old woman is the third American known to have been kidnapped by the radical group.
Jihadis like kidnapping. It's a lovely source of funds, demoralizes future conquests, and in the meantime keeps their attention focussed on the hostages instead of waging the war against the group taking hostages.
The Islamic State group recently threatened to kill American hostages to avenge the crushing airstrikes in Iraq against militants advancing on Mount Sinjar and the Kurdish capital of Irbil.

The 26-year-old woman was captured last year while working with three humanitarian groups in Syria. A representative for the family and US officials asked that the woman not be identified out of fear for her safety. All spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the issue publicly.

US begins surveillance flights over Syria: Report
[Iran Press TV] The United States has begun surveillance flights over holy warrior-controlled parts of Syria after US President Barack Obama
I am not a dictator!...
's authorization, according to American officials.

One unnamed official said on Tuesday that the reconnaissance flights had started, while two other officials said earlier that Obama had ordered the flights, The News Agency that Dare Not be Named reported.

According to reports, the flights will provide intelligence information on potential targets for Arclight airstrikes in Syria if the US president approves.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey said that the Pentagon wanted more clarity on the ISIL terrorist group in Syria, but declined to comment on the flights.

"Clearly the picture we have of ISIS (ISIL) on the Iraqi side is a more refined picture,'' said Dempsey. "The existence and activities of ISIS on the Syrian side ... we certainly want to have more insights."

On Monday, the Syrian government insisted that any military action on its soil must be coordinated in advance. Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem said that Syria rejects any unilateral military strikes by the US or any other country.

"Any violation of Syria's illusory sovereignty would be an act of aggression," he said. There would be "no justification" for strikes on Syrian territory "except in coordination with us to fight terrorism."

American officials, however, said they do not intend to ask permission from Damascus for the flights.

The United States' decision to expand its military and reconnaissance activities in Syria and Iraq is triggered by the growing fear of ISIL which now controls large parts of Iraq and Syria.

#1  Assad's targeting of rebel/jihadi strongholds appears to have very recently gained momentum and effectiveness.

Of course in the media, Pentagon and State Department spokespersons continue to pursue the Muzzi-speak doubletalk, 'dump the evil Assad' line at every opportunity [no longer mentioning the regime's failed "Arab Spring" campaign].

Officials: American fighting for ISIS killed in Syria
[CNN] An American named Douglas McCain was killed last weekend in Syria, where he was fighting for ISIS, two U.S. officials told CNN.

The man's uncle, Ken McCain, said that his nephew had gone to fight as a jihadi and that the U.S. State Department told the family Monday about the death.

Douglas McCain died in a battle between rival bully boy groups in the suburbs of Aleppo, Syria's once-bustling commercial capital and largest city, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based group that monitors the conflict.

Like the U.S. officials, the group described McCain as an ISIS fighter and said he died battling al-Nusra Front, an al Qaeda-linked organization that the U.S. government has blacklisted as a foreign terror organization.

McCain is not the first American to fight alongside forces of Evil in Syria, nor is he the first killed -- even if he may be the first with ISIS. Attorney General Eric Inaction Jackson Holder
... aka Mister Fast and Furious...
estimated this summer that there are 7,000 imported muscle in the war-ravaged Middle Eastern nation, many from places like Europe and the United States.

Yet McCain's death takes on added significance, and perhaps urgency, given the evolution of American strategy pertaining to ISIS and Syria.

Until now, Washington largely has limited its involvement in Syria to diplomatic efforts and supporting "moderate opposition,"
Suuuure Washington efforts were so limited.
as described by Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Martin Dempsey and others, that is fighting to unseat Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Oppressor of the Syrians and the Lebs...
That's the same goal as ISIS, which aims to rule a caliphate, known as the Islamic State, spanning Iraq and Syria.

Even so, the United States initiated Arclight airstrikes against ISIS in Iraq this month and signaled that it might next go after the group inside Syria.

The United States has started gathering intelligence on the locations of ISIS leadership and troops in Syria, two U.S. officials told CNN. President Barack Obama
Ready to Rule from Day One...
has OK'd reconnaissance flights over the war-ravaged nation, according to a U.S. official.

Official: Obama authorizes recon flights over Syria

Who was Douglas McCain?

According to his uncle, Douglas McCain's journey to Syria began after he converted several years ago from Christianity to Islam.

The family wasn't alarmed by his conversion, but they became aware of Facebook posts sympathetic to ISIS when he traveled to what they believed to be Turkey.

The fact that Douglas McCain became a jihadi left his family "devastated" and "just as surprised as the country," Ken McCain said.

He described the nephew he knew as "a good person, loved his family, loved his mother, loved his faith" -- the latter being a reference to the Christianity he practiced before his conversion.

U.S. counterterrorism Sherlocks had been looking into McCain's activities for some time before his death, one U.S. official said.

He was on a list of Americans who are believed to have joined Death Eater groups and who would be stopped and subjected to additional scrutiny if he traveled, according to the official.

Islamic State turns radical Islam on Syria Muslims
[REUTERS] As Islamic State Lions of Islam advanced in the Syrian province of Deir al-Zor last month, those who had held out against them faced a simple choice: beg for mercy or face certain death.

Their options were laid out in stark religious terms by the turban Islamists who are trying to carve out their own state in Syria and Iraq. Defeated fighters were required to "atone" or die, a choice set out in Islamic terms and implying that resisting Islamic State rule amounted to a sin against God.

"I surrendered my weapons," said a rebel fighter who capitulated to Islamic State on July 2 and has been living in fear for his life ever since. He still believes Islamic State could execute him at any moment. "Everyone is subject to this. Everyone is afraid," he said, speaking via internet link.

In cementing its control over the oil-producing province of Deir al-Zor, Islamic State has unleashed one of its bloodiest waves of repression to date, employing mass executions, threats and house demolitions as the attention of Western states has focused on rolling back the group in neighboring Iraq.

While some have been granted a pardon on Islamic State's terms that require complete allegiance, others have been shown no mercy. One tribe in particular has been singled out for persecution.

Hundreds of members of the Sheitaat clan have been executed after their tribe refused to submit to Islamic State. The entire tribe have been deemed "hostile apostates" by the group, an offshoot of al Qaeda that has declared a "caliphate" in the territory it holds.

Their killings are a reminder, say locals, that many of Islamic State's victims are not minority Shi'ites, Yazidis or Christians, but Sunnis who - nominally at least - follow the same denomination of Islam.

As Islamic State's advances in Iraq have sent minorities fleeing for fear of execution or forced conversion to Islam, the group's radical interpretation of the religion has, in the case of the Sheitaat, laid grounds for mass persecution of Sunnis.

INFIDELS

Islamic State has declared the Sheitaat tribe "an unbelieving sect" that should be fought as if they were infidels, according to a report from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which tracks violence in the Syrian war.

At least 700 hundred members of the tribe have already been executed, the Observatory reported on Aug. 16.

Another 1,800 are still missing after being detained by Islamic State, according to the Observatory, which gathers information from all sides in the Syrian war. Its efforts to pledge allegiance to Islamic State have been rebuffed.

Pictures of the bodies of men apparently slain by Islamic State fighters in Sheitaat areas are surfacing every day, said Rami Abdelrahman, founder of the Observatory. "We have repeatedly expressed concern
...meaning the brow was mildly wrinkled, the eyebrows drawn slightly together, and a thoughtful expression assumed, not that anything was actually done or indeed that any thought was actually expended...
s about extermination," he said.

"It is the first time that the Islamic State has used these (religious) concepts against an entire tribe," he said.

It has provided a convenient religious tool for crushing a tribe that until recently controlled several oil fields in Deir al-Zor, according to a source familiar with the conflict. That revenue stream is now fully in the hands of Islamic State.

The treatment of the Sheitaat has served as a powerful deterrent to further rebellion in Deir al-Zor, a province bordering Iraq in the east mostly inhabited by Sunni Arabs many of whom are members of tribes that span the border into Iraq.

Besides the Sheitaat tribe, thought to number about 150,000 people, the Islamic State has accepted the surrender of other influential clans in the area which have publicly capitulated to the group.

It was in early July that Islamic State, boosted by territorial gains in Iraq, staged a rapid advance in the province, securing a corridor of Syrian territory along the Euphrates river all the way to the Iraqi border.
