Algeria Hunts 15 Fugitives in Frenchman's Beheading
[AnNahar] Algeria is hunting 15 suspects in the kidnapping and beheading of French tourist Herve Gourdel on terrorism, kidnapping and murder charges, a judicial source said on Thursday.

The runaways are all Algerians and include the head of Jund al-Khilifa, or "Soldiers of the Caliphate," a group linked to Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
jihadists in Iraq and Syria, the source told Agence La Belle France-Presse.

Abdelmalik Gouri, the 37-year-old head of the group, his right-hand man Abdallah Abou Meriem, and the 13 other suspects are believed to have joined myrmidon organizations during Algeria's civil war in the 1990s.

Gourdel was seized by the group on September 21 while hiking in a national park in eastern Algeria.

The 55-year-old mountain guide was beheaded in a video posted online last week, after La Belle France rejected the kidnappers' ultimatum to halt anti-IS air raids in Iraq.

The investigation into Gourdel's murder is being handled by a special Algerian court that deals with organized crime and those linked to terrorism, while another probe is under way in La Belle France.

On Wednesday Algeria said the suspects were identified during a preliminary probe.

Jund al-Khilifa was formed at the end of August after splintering from Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and pledging allegiance to IS.

Experts say its members are former AQIM members like Gouri, who was the right-hand man of AQIM chief Abdelmalik Droukdel
... aka Abdel Wadoud, was a regional leader of the GSPC for several years before becoming the group's supremo in 2004 following the death of then-leader Nabil Sahraoui. Under Abdel Wadoud's leadership the GSPC has sought to develop itself from a largely domestic entity into a larger player on the international terror stage. In September 2006 it was announced that the GSPC had joined forces with al-Qaeda and in January 2007 the group officially changed its name to the Al-Qaeda Organization in the Islamic Maghreb....

As many as 30 killed in Benghazi suicide attacks
[Libya Herald] Some 30 soldiers were killed and as many 80 maimed in this morning's suicide kabooms at Benina airbase.

The initial double-bombings were the opening phase of an attack by Benghazi Revolutionaries Shoura Council (BRSC) which lasted into the afternoon, Buwabat Al-Wasat reported.

In the aftermath, another suicide kaboom reportedly took place targeting an Operation Dignity checkpoint east of Benghazi. Again, Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libyaand Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. It still uses the old name now and then, probably because the stationery's not all used up and the web site hasn't expired yet...
and its allies have been implicated in the bombings.

Medical sources said that 23 injured members of the BRSC were taken to Hawari Hospital for treatment. Hawari has long been held by Ansar al-Sharia and its supporters.

As many as 62 maimed members of Operation Dignity were received at Marj Hospital in the aftermath of the festivities.

Military sources have said that the fighting which took place on the Airport Road and its approach today was some of the heaviest seen in Benghazi. The area has been the scene of frequent battles between Operation Dignity and BRSC forces since the end of Ramadan.

Benina and a nearby air defence unit base remain the most important positions still held by Operation Dignity forces in Benghazi.

Despite the ferocity of the attack, Saiqa Special Forces
...Libya's elite army unit, insofar as they have one, formed from a mixture of paratroopers and commandos. The group emerged from a militia with the same name in 2010. It now numbers a few thousand and reports to the Ministry of Defence. It deployed in Benghazi in an attempt to control the carnage. As a result, it has been attacked and several of its officers murdered. The force is popular in Benghazi for its stance against Ansar al-Sharia group...
, loyal to Operation Dignity, appear to have retained control of the airport.

Boko Haram Video Shows Beheading of Nigeria Pilot
[NDTV] A new Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
video shows the beheading of a man identified as the pilot of a missing Nigerian Air Force jet and burnt out parts of a plane - the first indication that Nigeria's homegrown Islamic bully boy group has the capability to bring down aircraft.

It also allegedly features Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, a man Nigeria's military twice has claimed to kill in 2009 and again last year. Two weeks ago the military said they had killed in battle a Shekau lookalike who had posed in the group's videos.

"Here I am, alive and I will remain alive until the day Allah takes away my breath," the man says in the Hausa language. "Even if you kill me ... it will not stop us imposing Islamic rule ... We are still in our Islamic state, reigning and teaching the Koran."

The United States still has a $7 million ransom on Shekau's head, despite the death claims.

The video was made available to The News Agency that Dare Not be Named through the same channels used previously and seems to show the same man claiming to be Shekau.

In the latest video, he says they are prosecuting in accordance with Shariah law in areas under their control. Examples of punishments are shown, including the stoning death of a man apparently accused of adultery; the amputation of the hand of a young man accused of theft; the lashings of a man and what appears to be a girl covered in the hijab.

Nigeria court-martials 97 troops
ABUJA (Rooters) - Nigeria's military court-martialed 97 of its troops on Thursday for offenses including mutiny, assault, absconding, house breaking and disorderly behavior.

The president of the court-martial, Brigadier General Musa Yusuf, did not explicitly state that the trials related to soldiers' conduct in a war against Islamist gunnies Boko Haram

Low morale there has led to a series of desertions and at least one mutiny. A security source said some soldiers had refused to board a bus to a combat deployment. Nigeria's military authorities last month sentenced 12 soldiers to death by firing squad for mutiny in the northeastern region.

Troops have also been repeatedly accused by human rights

French Teen With Jihadi Aspirations Told To Kill Jews At Home
[IsraelTimes] A French teenager who wanted to join jihadists in Syria said her handlers instructed her to commit attacks on Jews in La Belle France.

The testimony of the 15-year-old girl, who was locked away
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
last month after her parents alerted police to her plans, appeared Thursday in Le Nouvel Observateur weekly. The magazine referred to her only as Lea, which is not her real name.

The report said that she was born to a nonreligious family and raised in southern La Belle France.

A juvenile court placed her under arrest and forbade her from leaving the country after her parents read her plans on her personal computer.

The article in the weekly did not say what restrictions if any exist on her freedom of movement or other liberties.

In the interview, Lea said she communicated for months with individuals who contacted her on Facebook. None of them were named. She also met with at least two handlers who allegedly helped prepare fake documents for her ahead of her planned journey to Syria.

But at one point, one of her handlers told her she could not travel to Syria after all and would need to commit an attack against Jews on French soil.

"They told me: 'it's no use, you've got too much of a record to ever come, so now the action needs to take place in La Belle France,'" the girl told the weekly. "They started showing me videos of dead children in Paleostine, telling me about the need to act against the Jews."

According to her testimony, the girl was under pressure to commit a suicide kaboom against Jewish targets or an attack resembling that of Mohammed Merah, the Moslem radical who murdered three children and a rabbi at a Jewish day school in Toulouse

in 2012.

"A woman talked to me about it for the first time. I found the place, ways to get weapons. I don't know if I would've been able to go through with it," she said.

Two brothers of Arshad Pappu killed in 'encounter'
[DAWN] KARACHI: Police on Wednesday claimed to have killed two suspected kidnappers who were brothers of the slain Arshad Pappu of Lyari
...one of the eighteen constituent towns of the city of Karachi. It is the smallest town by area in the city but also the most densely populated. Lyari has few schools, substandard hospitals, a poor water system, limited infrastructure, and broken roads. It is a stronghold of ruling Pakistan Peoples Party. Ubiquitous gang activity and a thriving narcotics industry make Lyari one of the most disturbed places in Karachi, which is really saying a lot....
gang warfare fame.

A special police team of the Anti-Violent Crime Cell with the help of the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee carried out a raid in Tariq Bin Ziad Society of Model Colony in the early hours of the day. The coppers were attacked by the suspects, who opened fire and threw hand-grenades at the police party. As a result, a policeman was hit by a gunshot in the leg and maimed while two other coppers were maimed by grenades, said AVCC chief Nasir Aftab.

In 'retaliatory firing', two suspects were killed. The bodies were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. Later they were identified as Abdullah, alias Shera, and Nasir, alias Bengali, brothers of Arshad Pappu, added the officer.

Mr Aftab said the raid was conducted by tracing the telephone location of one of the kidnapped persons with the help of the CPLC.

Arshad Pappu, one of the ringleaders of Lyari's gang warfare, was brutally murdered in a locality of the old city on March 16, 2013 and later his dismembered body was thrown there. The Supreme Court of Pakistain took suo motu

notice of the incident and ordered the registration of an FIR against the suspects, including a PPP MNA from Lyari.

Two killed in warfare

Gang warfare between two rival groups in Mehmoodabad claimed two lives early Wednesday morning, according to police.

The dead men were identified as Faisal Karim and Wali Dad, 28. They belonged to the separate gangs in the area and were wanted in several criminal cases, said South SSP Faisal Bashir Memon.

Blast in passenger van kills three in Gilgit
[DAWN] ISLAMABAD: At least three people were killed and nine others injured on Thursday when a roadside kaboom hit a passenger van near Gilgit town in northern Pakistain, officials said.

"The incident occurred near Haramosh village on Gilgit-Skardu road (around 30 miles south of Gilgit) when a passenger van was hit by a roadside kaboom blast," Zain Muhammad, a police official in Gilgit, told news agency AFP.

He said the injured included five women, two men and three children, adding that all the passengers belonged to the Shia community.

"It's a sectarian attack, the passenger van was going to Haramosh which is a completely Shia populated valley," he said.

Muhammad Ali Zia, another senior police official, confirmed the incident.

"It was a roadside kaboom blast, but we are yet trying to confirm whether it was blown up with a timer device or remote control device," he told AFP.

A bigwig of the Gilgit-Baltistan home department said the federal interior ministry had issued an alert to the Gilgit-Baltistan government last week warning of a possible sectarian attack.

"The interior ministry letter said Shia community might be targeted on the Karakorum Highway (KKH) in reaction to the killing of a Sunni holy man in the garrison city of Rawalpindi recently," he told AFP, requesting not to be named.

One polio team attacked, another threatened
[DAWN] RAHIM YAR KHAN: One polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
team was attacked and another threatened in different areas of Khanpur tehsil, some 50km from here, on Wednesday.

A police official, requesting anonymity, told Dawn that police were reluctant to arrest Masood Khan because of his strong political links.
DDO (Health) Agha Toheed Khan said polio team workers Maqbool Ahmed and Muhammad Saleem were attacked by teacher Muhammad Ashraf and his two colleagues when they visited the Government Primary School at Chak 17-P, Neelgarh. The three teachers tortured them, snatched their mobile phones and destroyed polio vaccine, depriving students of the medicine.

When lady health worker Amna Hameed along with her son Shoaib reached a house in Mauza Ghunyan, Masood Khan came out with a gun and threatened to shoot her if she insisted on getting his kids vaccinated.

Khanpur Saddar police have registered separate cases under sections 506 and 186.

District Coordination Officer Nabeel Javaid said the first incident was a scuffle between teachers not an attack on a polio team and police tossed in the slammer
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
the teacher involved in the incident.

The DCO said he was investigating the second incident in which a woman worker was threatened.

He said the district administration was responsible for the protection of polio teams, adding the police had been directed to take extra security measures.

A police official, requesting anonymity, told Dawn that police were reluctant to arrest Masood Khan because of his strong political links.

Iraq
Airstrike Agreement Keeps US Air Controllers Away From Combat
[Mil.com] U.S. warplanes have been flying close air support missions for Iraqi and Kurdish forces through a complex tactical arrangement that avoids having U.S. troops on the front lines to call in the strikes, an Air Force general said Monday.

"We think it’s being very effective right now," said Air Force Maj. Gen. Jeffrey L. Harrigian, the assistant deputy chief of staff for Operations.

Harrigian said that Kurdish and Iraqi forces in close contact with Islamic State fighters have been calling in suggested targets to U.S joint terminal attack controllers (JTACs) based at Joint Operations Centers in Baghdad and the Kurdish capital of Irbil.

The JTACs then check the suggested targets with live stream video from intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) assets overhead "so that we know where the front lines are" to plan strike missions, Harrigian said.

#1  This is nuts. FACs (as they used to be known) are combat trained troops, and they are, outside of the PJs, the best ground grunts the USAF has - at least the ones SOCOM uses. And they are vital eyes on the ground in every combat unit I've seen.

This whole "do it with a drone" is still unproven, and apparently ineffective because airbreathing overhead assets are not a flexibly tasked as a well trained guy on the ground with a radio, binocs and a laser, who can get into observation points and see things the overhead might miss from 5000+ feet

#2  No direct observation of the enemy. No ground troops to do survey and BDA. No use of manned aircraft if a drone is available.

#4  Soo....Joe is with Ali, Ali tells Joe the target, Joe cell phones Bob, Bob talks to command, command talks to lawyers, lawyers gather strike packages, strike packages go to prez, prez confirms, lawyers confide with country's reps, then if approved, Ali reconfirms strike, then action made?

Please tell me I'm crazy on this flow chart.

#5  No. Joe is not allowed to be on the ground because our commander-in-chief with his non-existent military experience has deemed it so. Therfore Ali has to phone Joe in the clear. ISIL wouldn't be intercepting cell calls, now would it. ~

So much for rapid response. Then again, I suspect it's more a matter of avoiding one Shiite militia using airstrikes to take out another militia.

Iraq Butcher's Bill: 40 jihadists, 17 police and army

They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group launched attacks on Iraqi bases in two western towns that left at least 17 members of the security forces and 40 jihadists dead, security and medical sources said Thursday.

Seven coppers and four soldiers were killed in an attack on police headquarters in the Anbar provincial town of Heet, while at least six members of federal forces were killed in an assault on a major army base in Ramadi.

In Heet, on the Euphrates River about 150 kilometres (95 miles) west of Baghdad, 25 gunnies attacked the police headquarters shortly after midnight.

"They smashed the gates open with suicide boom-mobiles, then 25 men tried to break into the HQ, sparking heavy festivities," Colonel Jabbar al-Nimrawi told AFP.

"The police potted 20 of them and the remaining five withdrew to the electricity building. They are still under siege; they have sniper rifles.

Nimrawi said the building was surrounded by police, army, elite counter-terrorism troops and anti-jihadist Sunni tribal forces. Heet hospital's Doctor Nael Ahmed said seven coppers and four soldiers had been killed.

Just outside Ramadi, less than 100 kilometres (60 miles) west of Baghdad and further down the Euphrates, a similar suicide unit attacked the 8th Brigade headquarters Wednesday.

"They attacked from three directions. They used suicide armoured vehicles to break into the compound, then 13 fighters with boom jackets entered," said senior army officer Awad al-Dulaimi.

"We killed the last one at 5:00 am (0200 GMT) after fierce exchanges. We also killed seven who had come from another direction," he said.

A doctor at Ramadi hospital, Ahmed al-Ani, confirmed that he had received the bodies of three members of the counter-terrorism force, including a colonel, and three soldiers.

Some of the last pockets still under government control in the Sunni province of Anbar are in Heet and Ramadi. The government also retains control of Haditha dam, further up the Euphrates towards Syria. US warplanes have struck IS forces around the dam several times.

of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and Sunni militias is raging in the west of Iraq's Anbar province, with a fierce battle taking place for control of the strategic town of Heet.

ISIL had reportedly seized control of most of the town on Thursday, but Sunni militias, fighting on behalf of Iraq's government, swiftly denied the claim saying the battle was ongoing.

State television said the gang had occupied the mayor's office and cop shoppe but were locked in fighting with the local Sunni Albu Nimr tribe.

, reporting from the capital Baghdad, said the town had yet to fall - with ISIL fighters unable to move in and out freely. Khan added that the fighting appeared to have sparked again over the past three days, prompted by US and French air strikes on an ISIL base-camp last week.

Heet is a walled market town 30km from Anbar's provincial capital Ramadi, and lies close to the Ain al-Asad military base, one of Iraq's largest defense facilities. Anbar Province, which borders Syria, has been a major stronghold for ISIL and continues to be largely controlled by the group.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Palestinians Caught With Explosives At Tapuach Junction
[Ynet] The two Paleostinians were also carrying an improvised firearm and several knives; suspects transferred to Shin Bet for questioning.

Border Police officers tossed in the calaboose
Please don't kill me!
two Paleostinians on Thursday carrying three pipe bombs, an improvised firearm and several knives near the Tapuach junction.

The Paleostinians, in their 20s, raised the suspicion of Border Police officers who were stationed in the area and after conducting a search, the officers uncovered the explosives. The two were then arrested and transferred to the Shin Bet for questioning.

Border Guard sappers were dispatched to the scene to neutralize the bombs.

An investigation of the incident revealed that after one of the bandidos murderous Moslems had pulled out a gun, a Border Guard officer cocked her weapon and another officer, who also at the checkpoint, managed to knock the gun out of the suspect's hands.

The troops then saw that one of the suspects was carrying a black backpack, which he had refused to open. The officers noticed there were electrical wires inside the bag and realized the suspect had an bomb with him, after which they cleared the scene, ordered civilians who were in the area to disperse, and called the police sappers.

"Two young Paleostinians arrived at the bus stop near the Tapuach checkpoint, and I notified two officers who were stationed nearby. The officers approached the suspects in order to examine them, and they initially said they were headed to Ramallah. At that point, one of the suspects pulled out a gun and directed it towards one of the officers," checkpoint commander First Sgt. Almog Ohana said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the comedy club, Boogie ducked another tomato...
the West Bank district police heightened security ahead of Yom Kippur and Eid al-Adha celebrations this weekend. Crossings into the West Bank will be closed from midnight Thursday until Sunday. Officers of the West Bank district police, Border Police officers, volunteers, and IDF soldiers will be deployed in towns and communities throughout the country from Friday until the end of Yom Kippur, placing an increased emphasis on the security of communities and synagogues.
The Times of Israel adds this background:
The Tapuah junction, which is located near the Paleostinian city of Nablus, has been the site of several terror attacks in the past. Over the past few months, security forces say they have thwarted a number of planned attacks at the site.

In May, Border Police forces at the junction discovered a Paleostinian man wearing an explosives vest, in an apparent suicide kaboom attempt. Several days later, a Paleostinian man was rubbed out by Border Police forces near the site after apparently opening fire at them. The man's family, however, maintained he was innocent and had arrived at a checkpoint near the junction in order to receive a shipment of cellphones for a store he owns.

Government
Disclosures Pried From Gov't Strongly Suggest Terrorist Awlaki Was an Informant
BLUF
[PJ Media] The new information corroborates my suggestion here two years ago that, in letting Awlaki go rather than arresting him on the pending fraud charge, the government was “acting on the misguided hope of using him as an informant.” This is not only cause for potential embarrassment in its own right; it adds to the concerns over the circumstances of Awlaki’s death.
Fox News Catherine Herridge research tends to confirm the notion held by some, that Nadal Hasan as well as the Tsnareav brothers may have also been part of a failed intelligence recruitment effort, or an effort which had run it's course and been terminated. The potential social media linkage of the recent OK City beheader to Awlaki, and the reluctance of the Fed's to classify his acts as domestic terrorism vs 'workplace violence' may also support the Herridge theory.

#1  Title should read "Prospective Informant."

#2  An amazing bit of coincidence:

The New York Times suggested later that al-Awlaki had claimed birth in Yemen (his family's place of origin) to qualify for scholarship money granted to foreign citizens.[61] US Congressman Frank R. Wolf (R-VA) wrote in May 2010 that it was his understanding that by doing so, al-Awlaki fraudulently obtained more than $20,000 in scholarship funds reserved for foreign students, for which he was not legally eligible.

Other interesting info found here.

#3  Was he droned zapped because he was deep into the terrorism or because he was a because of what he knew? Or both? FBI Agent Wade Ammerman probably has some info on why the warrant for Al-Awlaki's for passport fraud was ordered lifted by Ammerman on the morning of 10-2-2002.
