3 Afghans said dead in foreign forces' air strike
[Ynet] An Afghan official says at least three people have been killed in an air strike by US-led coalition forces but villagers in the remote area dispute the official version, saying the dead are civilians who were protecting their land from nomads. Din Mohammad Darwesh, front man for the governor of Pashtun-infested Logar province, says a delegation has been sent to find out exactly what happened in Baraki Barak district Friday morning.

He says that the US-led coalition has told the governor's officers that the dead, and another five who were maimed, were Taliban murderous Moslems.
An Nahar reports it somewhat differently:
Afghan officials said that a NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's headquartered in Belgium. That sez it all....
air strike on Friday killed five civilians and maimed six others, just days before the US-led military coalition ends combat operations in the country.

NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) did not immediately confirm the strike on Pashtun-infested Logar province, south of the capital Kabul, but always stresses that it tries to avoid civilian casualties.

"At around 3:30 am, U.S. forces conducted an air strike in Aab Josh village of Baraki Barak district," said the district governor Mohammad Amin.

"The air strike hit a residential house killing five and wounding six civilians," he told AFP.

Niaz Mohammad Amiri, Pashtun-infested Logar province's acting governor, said the incident happened as US forces tracked Taliban fighters that have been waging a deadly insurgency since late 2001.

"U.S. forces were chasing down Talibs, but mistakenly bombarded a house. As a result, civilians were victims of the attack," Amiri said.

Top Al-Shabab leader surrenders in Somalia
[AMERICA.ALJAZEERA] A top leader of Somalia's Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Shabaab
... the personification of Somali state failure...
gang has surrendered to government and African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
forces and is now in jug, officials said Saturday.

The group's intelligence chief, Zakariya Ismail Ahmed Hersi, was the subject of a $3 million bounty as part of the U.S. State Department "Rewards for Justice" program. Officials said he surrendered in the Gedo region, where Somalia borders Kenya and Æthiopia.

"Zakariya Ahmed was a very senior person who worked with Godane," said regional military official Jama Muse, referring to former Al-Shabaab leader Ahmed Abdi Godane. "He was in charge of intelligence and finances. He was one of the senior Al-Shabaab commanders who the Americans put a lot of money on their head."

A U.S. drone strike in Somalia killed Godane in September. The State Department declared Al-Shabaab a foreign terrorist organization in 2008, and since then American military forces have targeted the group many times.

An intelligence source said Hersi's surrender was believed to have been motivated by a series of recent bloody splits and purges within the group, with Godane having ruthlessly eliminated many of his rivals and his successor, Ahmad Umar Abu Ubaidah, continuing to maintain strict internal security.

Although presented by the officials as a senior Al-Shabaab operative, it was unclear if Hersi had still been active within Al-Shabaab in recent months or weeks, or if he was among a large group of commanders who had already fallen out with Godane prior to his death. Some of them were killed in a purge.

There was no immediate comment from Al-Shabaab.

The surrender brings some welcome news for Somalia's fragile, internationally backed government as well as the African Union's AMISOM force, who have been facing an almost constant wave of attacks from Al-Shabaab despite recent territorial gains in the south and center of the Horn of Africa nation.

The Somali government has also been locked in bitter infighting, with the president this month falling out with his prime minister. According to a Western intelligence source, the surrender could deliver an "intelligence bonanza" that could prove highly damaging to the Al-Qaeda-linked group.

Death Toll in Somalia Base Attack Rises
The African Union says it has killed the last three of eight al-Shabab militants who attacked its base in the Somali capital of Mogadishu, bringing the death toll to 14. A spokesman for the AU mission in Somalia (AMISOM) tells VOA five AU peacekeepers and a foreign contractor died in Thursday's raid on one of the city's most fortified bases.

Colonel Ali Aden Hamoud said an investigation is under way to find out how terrorists militants dressed in Somali uniforms infiltrated the Halane facility near Mogadishu International Airport, which is also home to a United Nations office and several embassies.

"From our coordination, there will be some change for sure," he said.

The identity and nationality of the foreign contractor have not been released.

AMISOM said Thursday it had regained control of the base and "restored normalcy" after terrorists rebels ambushed the compound around midday, trying to gain access to what the peacekeeping mission called critical infrastructure. In claiming responsibility for the attack, al-Shabab terrorists said the raid targeted a Christmas party at the base.
Can't have any of that foreign religion around Mogadishu, by Gawd...
Despite the magnitude of yesterday's attack, Ambassador Maman Sidikou, special representative of the chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia, said the continental body remains committed to supporting the Somali people and government in rebuilding their country.

“Today I’ve been on the phone with generals and officers, and I told them many people will be unhappy with us in coming days simply because you’re going to strictly enforce the regulations so that there is no mistake of this sort," he said, emphasizing the need to fully enforce all security measures to ensure that such an attack would not happen again.

"This means we have to agree with our partners, the U.N. and other partners, on how the camps are going to be monitored, who can enter and who cannot enter,” Sidikou added before expressing grief for the victims and their families.

“We lost five of our colleagues, five young soldiers to this attack by Al-Shabab on our camp. These young men have been [in] Somalia, some of them one year, some a few months, sacrificing to ensure that this part of Africa is free and stable,” he said.

Ambassador Sidikou withheld names and nationalities of the deceased, saying the mission wanted to first notify their families.

When asked how the terrorists militants infiltrated the base, he said the terrorists fighters had disguised themselves with Somali army uniforms, but quickly added that how they entered the base is less important than what will be done about it.

"This is a wakeup call for all of us, precisely because we’re working with Somalis [who] sometimes use tactics such as pretending they are [the] soldiers with whom we work to build their capacity.”

He also said Al-Shabab, which controlled most of Mogadishu before recently losing territory, is desperate to try any methods to show they are still relevant.

“So we have to adapt very, very quickly to the kind of warfare they’re imposing on us right now with the support of Somali institutions," Sikikou said. "If not, what will happen is instability will be the name of the game.”
An Nahar notes:
Officials did not give the nationalities of the AMISOM troops who were killed, but a contingent of Ugandan soldiers is in charge of the base.

19 soldiers killed, oil tank hit in Libya
TRIPOLI: Nineteen Libyan soldiers were killed in clashes with radical fighters on Thursday east of the country, officials said. A military source said the soldiers were killed in attacks launched by the Fajr Libya movement in Sirte.

The Al-Sidra and its adjacent Ras Lanuf terminal have been closed since a force allied to a rival government in Tripoli moved east trying to take them.

Meanwhile, a rocket hit a storage tank in the oil port as armed factions allied to competing governments fought for control of the country’s biggest export terminal.

“A tank was hit but the damage is limited,” said an official from a security service allied to the internationally recognized government, now operating from eastern Libya. He said there were heavy clashes in the Ben Jawad area west of Al-Sidra where he said some of the rival forces were based.

He accused opponents of having shot at the port from boats which they had tried to dock at Al-Sidra. “The air force destroyed three boats which were attempting to seize the port,” he said.

Ismail Al-Shukri, spokesman for the rival force, denied this, saying warplanes belonging to the other side had bombed the port. “Our forces are progressing from all directions toward Es Sider port,” he said.

An Oil Ministry official said the tank was still on fire. Smoke could be seen on pictures posted on social media websites and described as showing the port.

Egyptian teen seized in Libya found dead
BENGHAZI: An Egyptian teenager abducted in Libya by armed men who killed her parents has been found dead, a hospital source said Friday. Residents found the body of the daughter of the two slain doctors on Thursday evening, said the source at the Ibn Sina Hospital in the city of Sirte, without giving the cause of death.

She said the girl was 13 years old. Initial reports had given her age as 18. After murdering her parents in their home on Tuesday, the attackers took the girl but left behind two sisters, local council chairman Yussef Tebeiqa said on the day of the incident.

Tebeiqa said the attack took place in Sirte, home town of slain leader Muammar Qaddafi. Sirte, 500 km east of Tripoli, is in the hands of armed militias including Ansar Al-Sharia, which the UN Security Council last month added to its terror list over links to Al-Qaeda and for running Islamic State group training camps.

Several Coptic Christian Egyptians have been killed in Libya in recent years. In February, the bodies of seven Egyptian Christians who had been shot were found near the second city of Benghazi.
That's more than 'several'...

Roadside bomb kills 2 soldiers in Sinai
Cairo: A roadside bomb explosion struck an army vehicle in the volatile Sinai Peninsula, killing an army captain and a soldier, a military spokesman said. The spokesman Brig. Gen. Mohammed Samir said on his official Facebook page Friday that another soldier was injured in Thursday’s explosion near the city of el-Arish.

The militant group Ansar Beit al-Maqdis,
Who?
Also known as Al Qaeda in the Sinai, until they went for the temporary strong horse.
Oh, them! Why didncha say so?
We spell it Ansar Bayt, etc., which is why you were confused.
which pledged allegiance to the ISIS group,
Splinter!
has claimed responsibility for most of the attacks in Sinai.

Meanwhile Egypt’s state news agency MENA said police exchanged fire with three gunmen in the eastern Cairo neighborhood of al-Salam on Thursday, killing two of them while three policemen and two passers-by were injured. The third gunman fled. MENA said the three gunmen refused to stop their car at a police checkpoint.

A video message posted by the Ansar Beit al-Maqdis Friday on a militant website affiliated to the ISIS group showed four Egyptians identifying themselves by their names and confessing they collaborated with the Egyptian army. The four were later shown being shot and killed one after the other by a rebel. The group had already posted videos showing similar executions of suspected collaborators.

The video also showed rebels checking identities of passengers and drivers along what it said was the international road between el-Arish and Rafah. The authenticity of the video could not be verified.

French police arrest 4th suspect in Paris rape, robbery
[IsraelTimes] French police locked away
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
a man they suspect was involved in the rape and robbery of a Jewish family in a Gay Paree suburb.

The suspect, who was not named, was apprehended Tuesday during a routine police inspection of his vehicle while he was driving in Saint-Etienne near Lyon, 340 miles southeast of the capital, Le Figaro reported. The report was based on police sources who spoke under condition of anonymity.

The man is believed to have participated in a break-in on Dec. 1 at the home of a Jewish family in Creteil along with two other individuals. The three are said to have targeted the home because they knew it belonged to Jews they thought were wealthy. A fourth suspect is in jug for his alleged involvement.

One of the men raped a 19-year-old woman they found in the house while another guarded her 21-year-old boyfriend and a third withdrew money from an ATM using credit cards they took from the couple, police Sherlocks said.

The incident sparked outrage in La Belle France?s Jewish community and came amid a string of anti-Semitic attacks. The SPCJ watchdog on anti-Semitism recorded 527 attacks in La Belle France from Jan. 1 to July 31 of this year. In all of last year, SPCJ documented 423 incidents.

Police arrested two suspects in the break-in shortly after the incident and a third accomplice whose role has not yet been determined. The two suspects arrested earlier this month are awaiting trial for religiously-motivated assault, rape, conspiracy to commit a crime, extortion and several other charges.

The brutal case prompted La Belle France?s interior minister to vow to make the fight against anti-Semitism a ?national cause.?

Bernard Cazeneuve said earlier this month: ?We need to make the fight against racism and anti-Semitism a national cause by getting all bodies concerned involved.

Cazeneuve said anti-Semitic acts and threats have more than doubled in the past 10 months and called for the authorities to ensure that ?none of them goes unpunished?.

?The Republic will defend you with all its force because, without you, it would no longer be the Republic,? he added, speaking at a rally in Creteil.

For third time this week, shots fired at Paris Jewish target
[IsraelTimes] Days after similar attacks against Jewish targets, shots were fired at a Gay Paree publishing house owned by Jews on Thursday night.
Just boys being boys, not Sudden Jihad Syndrome at all.
Bullets holes were discovered at the entrance to the building on Friday morning, Israel Radio reported.

Investigators believe the shooter used a high-powered air gun, the same type of weapon used in the two previous attacks this week.

On Wednesday, bullet holes were discovered in the window of the Al Haeche kosher restaurant located in the 19th district of northeastern Gay Paree. The attack occurred Tuesday night, the JSSNews website reported.

That bullet, too, was reportedly fired from an air gun. An air gun is believed to have been used Monday night when a bullet crashed through a window of the David Ben Ichay Synagogue in Belleville, in the northeastern section of the French capital. The synagogue is located less than a mile from the restaurant.

Pakistani army says airstrikes kill 23 militants
[FOXNEWS] The Mighty Pak Army says its warplanes have killed 23 gunnies as part of an ongoing operation in a troubled tribal region near the Afghan border.

An army statement says the Arclight airstrikes were carried out Friday evening in the Datta Khel area of the North Wazoo tribal region.

The attacks also destroyed an underground tunnel system and a large underground cache of weapons and ammunition, the statement said.

The army says it has killed over 1,200 gunnies since the start of a massive offensive launched June 15 against gunnies in North Waziristan.

Journalists are barred from the region and it is impossible to independently verify the information.

The operation is aimed at eliminating those Pak and foreign gunnies accused of launching attacks in Pakistain and neighboring Afghanistan.

'Facilitator' of Taliban School Attack Killed in Pakistan
[AnNahar] Pak security forces have killed a Taliban capo who allegedly facilitated the Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. school massacre, which left 150 people dead in the country's worst ever terror attack, officials said Friday.

Named only as "Saddam", the holy warrior was killed Thursday night in a shootout with security forces in the restive Khyber tribal area, which borders the northwestern city of Peshawar where last week's horrific attack took place.

"Commander Saddam was a dreaded terrorist, who was killed in an exchange of fire with the security forces in Jamrud town of Khyber tribal region," top local administration official Shahab Ali Shah told a presser in Peshawar.

"Six of his accomplices were maimed and tossed in the clink

He added that Saddam is believed to have facilitated the school attack, although the extent or capacity of his alleged involvement was not yet known.

"Authorities are currently interrogating the injured terrorists," Shah said.

He described Saddam as an important commander in the Pak Taliban, or Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP), and said he had criminal masterminded several kabooms.

Saddam and his accomplices had been involved in several recent attacks on security forces that had resulted in heavy casualties, Shah said.

The military said it killed 23 Lions of Islam in aerial strikes in the troubled northwest near the Afghan border on Friday evening.

"In very effective and precise aerial strikes in North Wazoo this evening, 23 bandidos Lions of Islam including some important commanders were killed," the military said in a statement.

"A huge underground ammunition dump and tunnel system have been destroyed," it added.

The Taliban and other Lions of Islam have taken refuge in Khyber from a major army offensive launched in June in North Waziristan, another restive tribal area on the Afghan border that has been a hub for al-Qaeda and Talibs since the early 2000s.

Meanwhile,

a U.S. drone strike on a Taliban compound in North Waziristan killed at least four Lions of Islam on Friday, officials said, the second such incident in a week.

Another drone strike in North Waziristan on December 20 killed at least five holy warriors, officials said.

The area is generally off-limits to journalists, making it difficult to independently verify the number and identity of the dead.

The Pak military says it has killed more than 1,700 Lions of Islam so far in its heavy offensive in the tribal zone, with 126 soldiers having bit the dust.

Pakistain has ramped up its anti-terror strategy in the wake of the December 16 slaughter at an army-run school in Peshawar, where 134 children were among the victims bumped off by heavily-armed Talibs.

Drone zaps leave seven bad boys dead
DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan: Pakistani intelligence officials say a suspected US drone fired missiles at two compounds in the North Waziristan tribal region killing at least seven alleged militants.

Four intelligence officials say the early Friday strikes hit the compounds of the Punjabi Taleban and Uzbek militants in Shawal area of North Waziristan. They say two missiles each hit the compound of Punjabi Taleban in Kund village killing four and the compound of Uzbak militants in Mangrotai village killing three Uzbeks.

Drone strikes are largely unpopular in Pakistan where many consider them a violation of the country’s sovereignty. But the US insists these attacks are effective to eliminate militants in areas inaccessible to the Pakistani military.
Both sides are absolutely correct!

Jordan: ISIL didn't down plane in Syria
A Jordanian army general on Thursday denied reports that a Jordanian air force plane was shot down in the northern Syrian city of Raqqa by the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militant group, Anadolu agency reported.

In a statement that was published by the website of the Jordanian army, the general added that early indications had showed that the plane was not shot down by ISIL, which controls the Syrian city. Nevertheless, the general went on to say that it was difficult to determine the reason why the plane fell down.
I'd believe him completely if he blamed inshallah maintenance...
He said the Jordanian army could not reach either the debris of the plane, or its pilot, who was taken hostage by ISIL.

On Wednesday, ISIL claimed that it had shot down a Jordanian air force plane that launched strikes against the targets of the militant movement in the Syrian city.

The Pentagon said in a statement on Wednesday that there were indications that ISIL did not down the aircraft.

Jordan in secret talks to secure release of captured pilot
Jordanian authorities have begun indirect negotiations with the Islamic State (IS) to secure the release of a Jordanian Air Force pilot, whose plane crashed near the IS stronghold of Raqqah, Syria, Al Jazeera reported, citing government sources.
But don't tell anyone because it's a secret...
"Indirect negotiations are under way… We are ready to begin settling the [pilot's release]," the source was quoted as saying.

According to the broadcast network, Jordanian authorities are in close contact with high-level political figures in Iraq and tribal leaders that enjoy "strong relations" with Jordan, who could potentially serve as intermediaries. Additionally, Turkey and Qatar could also potentially fill that role, RIA Novosti reported.

"Contact is under way with our Turkish [colleagues]. We will also send [requests] to establish contact with [colleagues] in Qatar," the source was quoted as saying by the network, adding that Jordan is considering a prisoner exchange of IS fighters held in Jordan for its pilot, 26-year-old Maaz Kassasbeh.

The Jordanian military confirmed on Dec.24 reports that Kassasbeh had been captured by militants near Raqqah after one of its F-16 jets had crashed during an anti-IS air campaign. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) and the Jordanian Armed Forces later announced that, contrary to claims by the militant group, evidence indicated that IS did not shoot down the aircraft.

Kassasbeh's family appealed for his release and the army urged media outlets to exercise restraint in publishing information and "take into account the feelings of the pilot's relatives."

In June 2014, the Islamic State jihadist group declared a caliphate in swaths of Iraqi and Syrian territories under its control, prompting the United States to build a 60-nation strong anti-IS coalition directly or indirectly involved in airstrikes targeting the militant group's strongholds.

3 Militants Killed as Army Thwarts Infiltration Attempt near Arsal
[AnNahar] Three gunnies were killed overnight when the Lebanese army thwarted an attempt by murderous Moslems to infiltrate an area on the outskirts of the northeastern border town of Arsal.

The state-run National News Agency said Friday that one of the dead jihadists is a Syrian member of the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra

Front.

NNA identified him as Adham Shaddad.

The fighters died when the army repelled their infiltration attempt in the area of Wadi al-Hosn, the agency added.

The nearby border is long and porous, and has proved an easy crossing point for smugglers, refugees and fighters.

Tens of thousands of Syrian refugees are being hosted in the town, and opposition fighters have bases in the mountainous border area outside Arsal.

The strikes occurred Thursday. Another Syrian monitoring group also reported the raids, and activists uploaded video of the strikes' aftermaths to social networks. They appeared genuine and corresponded to News Agency that Dare Not be Named reporting.
