Former Soviet Talibanski found guilty on terrorism charges
A former Soviet army officer accused of being a Taliban fighter was found guilty of terrorism charges on Friday by a federal jury in Richmond, Virginia, a court official said.

Irek Hamidullin, 55, a former Soviet tank commander who converted to Islam, faced 15 counts ranging from supporting Death Eaters to firearms charges stemming from his orchestration of a 2009 attack on an Afghan Border Police base in eastern Afghanistan's Khost province
... across the border from Miranshah, within commuting distance of Haqqani hangouts such as Datta Khel and probably within sight of Mordor. Khost is populated by six different tribes of Pashtuns, the largest probably being the Khostwal, from which it takes its name...
.

He was the first military prisoner from Afghanistan to be tried in a U.S. federal court. The jury of seven men and five women deliberated more than eight hours before reaching their verdict.

Prosecutors portrayed Hamidullin as the criminal mastermind of the attack whose goal was to lure U.S. troops into a trap and then pound them with heavy weapons and shoot down U.S. helicopters.

"He clearly was setting up for American forces he knew would respond," said Assistant U.S. Attorney James Gillis.

Hamidullin faces a maximum penalty of life in prison when he is sentenced on Nov. 6.

His defense attorney had countered that there was insufficient proof that Hamidullin had intended to kill Americans.

Hamidullin was indicted by a federal grand jury in Virginia last year. The charges include ordering his men to set up a machine gun and a recoilless rifle to bring down U.S. military helicopters.

airport in Qasaba area in the 15th police district of Kabul city.

The main target of the coordinated attack was a military base used by the US Special Operations forces where initially a large kaboom took place allowing the remaining holy warriors to launch attack on the base.

Sporadic clash between the security forces and the assailants continued for several hours involving heavy and lights weapons.

Preliminary reports suggest at least three Americans were maimed in the attack but the security officials have not commented regarding the exact number of casualties so far.

This was the third consecutive kaboom which jolted capital Kabul within the past 24 hours which have left several people dead and scores of others maimed.

Deadly suicide attacks kill 35, wound hundreds in Kabul
[Al Ahram] Two suicide kabooms killed at least 35 people and maimed hundreds more in Kabul

's death.

In the first attack, a powerful truck bomb tore through the centre of Kabul just after midnight on Friday, killing 15 civilians and wounding 240 others.

Less than 24 hours later, at least 20 Afghan cadets were killed when a suicide attacker dressed in police uniform went kaboom! at the entrance of Kabul Police Academy.

The Taliban distanced themselves from the first bombing that struck near a Kabul military base -- as they usually do in attacks that result in a large number of civilian casualties.

But the murderous Moslems were quick to claim responsibility for the second attack, which marks a serious breach of security at a premier training institute for Afghan cops.

support.

Friday's bombings are the first major attacks after Mullah Akhtar Mansour was named as the new Taliban chief last week, in an acrimonious power transition after the murderous Moslems confirmed the death of longtime leader Mullah Omar.

Observers say the escalating violence demonstrates Mullah Mansour's attempt to boost his image among Taliban cadres and drive attention away from internal divisions over his leadership.

A truck packed with explosives detonated just after midnight near an army base in the neighbourhood of Shah Shaheed, rattling homes across the city, ripping off the facades of buildings and leaving scattered piles of rubble.

The force of the kaboom created an enormous crater in the road, around 10 metres (30 feet) deep, and destroyed the boundary wall of the base, although no military casualties were reported.

"The corpse count from the early Friday attack... has risen to 15," deputy presidential front man Sayed Zafar Hashemi told AFP, adding that "240 people have been maimed -- including women and kiddies".

The health ministry said the number of maimed could run even higher, with most suffering injuries from flying glass.

Kabul Police Chief General Abdul Rahman Rahimi said officials were searching for anyone trapped under the mangled concrete debris.

Soldiers erected a security cordon around the military base close to Shah Shaheed, a largely middle-class civilian residential area with no major foreign presence.

The maimed were overwhelming city hospitals, officials said, with reports emerging of blood shortages and urgent appeals for donors circulating on social media.

Later Friday, a suicide attacker dressed in police uniform went kaboom! at the entrance of Kabul Police Academy, killing at least 20 Afghan cadets who were returning after their two-day weekend.

The bomber managed to place himself in a queue as police trainees were waiting to be searched before entering the academy, said a senior Afghan intelligence official, requesting anonymity.

"The attacker was wearing police uniform... when he detonated his explosives, 20 cadets were killed and 20 more were maimed," the official told AFP.

Another police official confirmed that toll while a third senior security source told AFP that 25 cadets were killed.

The Taliban were behind the suicide attack, the front man for the group, Zabihullah Mujahid, told AFP.

Heavily-armed security officials cordoned off the area and ambulances with wailing sirens were seen rushing to the scene.

Police Academy in Kabul, a security official said.

The source told TOLOnews on condition of anonymity that a jacket wallah wearing a police uniform detonated his explosives at the entrance of the compound in PD5, near Bagh-e-Bala, in Kabul on Friday night.

The suicide bomber got to the main entrance of the academy and was standing with a group of police trainees when he detonated his explosives, the source added.

This comes only hours after a powerful truck bomb rocked Kabul's Shah Shaheed district in the early hours of Friday morning -- killing 15 people and injuring over 400.

Extensive damage was caused to buildings in the vicinity -- many of them collapsing all together.

No group has yet grabbed credit for either of the attacks.

"The hostage taking is still going on. The corpse count now is three dead soldiers and four maimed," a military source said. "Two bandidos Lions of Islam have also been killed and there are three bodies lying in front of the hotel next to a burned-out minibus."

Earlier the authorities had said that four people, including two soldiers, had been killed at the Byblos hotel, which is popular with foreigners.

However,
some men learn by reading. A few learn by observation. The rest have to pee on the electric fence for themselves...
News Agency that Dare Not be Named said that gunnies stormed two hotels seizing at least six hostages. It added that "Islamic snuffies assaulted one hotel in the town of Sevare, and then after an exchange of gunfire moved on to the Hotel Byblos next door where they grabbed between six and 10 people" according to Lt. Col. Diarran Kone.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry issued a statement based on information from its embassy in Algeria saying that the goal of the attackers was believed to be to take hostages from among the foreign citizens living in the hotel.

"According to the information available, a Ukrainian citizen may be among those foreign citizens taken hostage. In addition, three citizens of South Africa and a French citizen may be held hostage," it said.

AFP said that an Ukrainian citizen fled the standoff.

Gunmen attack hotel in central Mali, one dead
[Al Ahram] At least one person was killed in an attack early on Friday by unidentified gunmen on a hotel in central Mali frequented by United Nations peacekeepers in the West African nation, a witness and a military spokesman said.

The raid targeted a hotel on the road to the airport in Sevare, which services the larger town of Mopti. The body of one victim was visible in front of the building, the two sources said.

A second military source said two people had been killed.

"It started before 8 a.m. (0800 GMT). I saw a body in front of the hotel. It was a white man but I don't know his nationality," said airport worker Moussa Diallo.

The hotel was believed to be lodging nationals from South Africa, France and Ukraine, Malian military spokesperson Souleymane Dembele said in text message.

"The (Malian army) has encircled the zone and is attempting to enter the hotel," he wrote.

A UN source, who asked not to be named, said that the attackers remained in the hotel and that gunfire continued to be heard three hours after the initial assault.

The UN force, known as MINUSMA, was deployed in the wake of an Islamist militant occupation of Mali's desert north. A French-led military operation drove the insurgents, some of them with links to al Qaeda, from cities and towns in the north, but remnants of the Islamist fighters continue to carry out attacks.

At Least 12 Killed as Mali Hotel Siege Finally Ends

[AnNahar] At least 12 people including four foreign U.N. contractors died in a hostage siege at a hotel in central Mali that ended early Saturday when government troops stormed the building.

"There are 12 dead in all," an army officer told Agence France Presse after the operation at the Hotel Byblos in Sevare, listing the fatalities as five "terrorists", five soldiers and "two white people".

The body of one of the foreign victims had lain in front of the hotel since Friday when the gunmen stormed the building, the officer said.

The UN mission in Mali MINUSMA said two Ukrainians, a Nepalese and a South African were killed in the drama as well as a Malian driver working for a company contracted by the mission. It said four others -- two South Africans, a Russian and a Ukranian -- were rescued and were in "good health."

A source told AFP that a Russian man "hidden inside the building" had supplied "useful information" to Malian forces during the siege.

Gunmen had burst into the hotel at around 7:00 am (0700 GMT) on Friday, according to the government. At least one of the attackers was said to be wearing a belt of explosives.

Malian forces cordoned off the area but their efforts to dislodge the attackers were complicated by the presence of hostages.

There were exchanges of fire throughout Friday and the army brought the siege to an end early Saturday, with one source saying foreign special forces were also involved.

The U.N. mission said the initial target of the attack was a Malian military site.

"The attackers, who were pushed back by the Malian Armed Forces, then took refuge in a hotel," MINUSMA said.

A Ukrainian hostage who managed to escape from the hotel said up to five gunmen had led the hostage-taking in Sevare, which lies 620 kilometers (385 miles) south of the capital Bamako.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, which comes as Mali battles a resurgence in jihadist violence, two years after a French-led offensive routed three Islamist factions from most parts of the country.

France has more than 1,000 soldiers based in northern Mali as part of regional anti-terrorist efforts.

The hotel siege was the third attack in just a week in Mali, which is still struggling to restore stability despite a landmark peace deal agreed in June to end years of unrest and ethnic divisions.

Islamist militants have kidnapped a number of foreigners in Mali in recent years, at least two of whom are still being held hostage by al-Qaida's front group in the region AQIM.

Saudi soldier killed in shelling from Yemen
[Al Ahram] A Saudi soldier was killed by shelling from across the Yemeni border on Friday, becoming the third death this week, the official SPA news agency reported.

Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. rebels in Yemen.

Another soldier died from shelling along the border on Wednesday, and a civilian was killed in Najran three days earlier.

The latest cross-border barrages coincide with advances since late July by pro-government fighters who recaptured the southern city of Aden from the Iran-backed Houthi rebels.

On Tuesday, they also took back Al-Anad airbase north of Aden, using heavy armour supplied by the coalition after hundreds of Gulf Arab troops landed in the port city to bolster the fightback.

The Saudi soldier brings the number of people killed in shelling and skirmishes along the frontier with Yemen

2 Gazans wounded in Israel air strike after rocket fire
[Al Ahram] A retaliatory Israeli air strike on Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,'s military wing in the Gazoo Strip maimed two people Friday, a Paleostinian official said, following a rocket attack on Israel.

Gazoo health ministry front man Ashraf al-Qudra told AFP that one person was seriously hurt and the other moderately in the strike on a training facility of the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, near El Bureij refugee camp in the centre of the strip.

He did not identify the casualties.

A rocket was fired earlier from Gazoo into southern Israel, the Israeli army said.

In an attack claimed by jihadists, Gazoo forces of Evil earlier fired a rocket into southern Israel, without causing casualties, the Israeli army said.

"A rocket fired from the Gazoo Strip hit southern Israel," it said in a statement. "No injuries reported."

Israeli media said at least one other rocket was fired but fell short and landed in the Paleostinian territory.

The air force "targeted a Hamas terror infrastructure in the central Gazoo Strip. A direct hit was confirmed," Israel's military said.

Hamas is the de factor power in Gazoo and Israel formally holds it responsible for any attack launched from the coastal territory.

"Hamas must fulfil its responsibilities or face the consequences," the army statement said.

Earlier, a previously unheard of group calling itself "The Grandsons of the Companions of the Prophet" grabbed credit for the rocket fire.

The rocket fire was "the first response by Salafist jihadists to Jewish attacks against Al-Aqsa", it said.

Last month, Israeli police entered Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque as they clashed with Paleostinians angered by Jews' being granted access to the compound on an annual day of Jewish mourning.

The mosque compound, one of the most volatile sites in the Middle East, is the most sacred site in Islam's third holiest, after Mecca and Medina.

have made no secret of their disdain for Hamas over its observance of a tacit ceasefire with Israel and failure to implement Islamic law.

Last summer, Israel launched a 5-day military offensive on Gazoo, killing about 2,220 Paleostinians. On the Israeli side, 73 people were killed, mostly soldiers.

U.S.-trained Syrian rebels refuse to fight al-Qaeda
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A group of U.S.-trained Syrian rebels have declared their refusal to fight al-Qaeda's affiliate in the country, the Nusra Front, following a series of kidnappings by the Lion of Islam group, The Guardian reported on Thursday.

In late July, al-Nusra Front vowed to cut off "the arms" of the American government in Syria when they attacked headquarters of Division 30, killing at least five fighters.

A source in the U.S.-backed group said those captured were families of the fighters.

On Tuesday, the Pentagon also said members of the Free Syrian Army

I keep thinking it can't get any stupider, more evil, hilarious (in a black way) something else digs deeper.

Fatah Army seizes new village in Sahl al-Ghab near Hama
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] The Fatah Army on Friday has seize a new village in Sahl al-Ghab plain, an advance follows a week of gains, activists said while regime supporters lament 27 soldiers killed in the battles.

In less than one week, key Islamist rebel group was able to regain villages and hills from regime army in northern province of Idlib and neighboring plain, a move has triggered panic amid Bashir al-Assad's supporters what pushed tens of Alawite families to fled their villages.

Fatah Army took control of al-Qarqour village on Friday and had seized days ago Tel Hekmah, Tel A'awar and Marj al-Zuhour villages northeast of Sahl al-Ghab, and recaptured Zaizoun thermal station in the plain.

Last Saturday, the regime army and allied militia NDF had regained control over several northwestern villages from rebels in Sahl al-Ghab which is crucial for defending coastal areas that Assad holds. But very soon its victories returned to humiliating defeats.

The predominantly Alawite plain is considered as a main manpower supply for Assad army. Activists who praised the advances on social media say rebels' progress can not be stoppable.

Alawites living near the coast are worried by Fatha Army to advance closer to their areas.

According to Rooters, some analysts argue that even if there is dissent in the Alawite community, the threat posed by rebels will bind it more tightly together rather than cause divisions.

The Army of Conquest, or Fatah Army, has made advances against the military in several parts of Syria in recent months, including capturing most of Idlib province.

ISIL abducts dozens of Christians from Syrian town

of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) forces of Evil have kidnapped dozens of Christian families after seizing a strategically located town in the central Syrian province of Homs, a monitor said on August 7.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 230 people were kidnapped, including dozens of Christians, some of whom were taken from a church in Qaryatain, the town captured overnight after heavy fighting with the Syrian army.

Qaryatain is near a road linking the ancient city of Palmyra to the Qalamoun mountains, along the border with Leb.

ISIL has killed members of religious minorities and Sunni Moslems who do not swear allegiance to its self-declared "caliphate". They also consider Christians as infidels.

Last February, the hardline jihadists kidnapped at least 250 Assyrian Christians, many of whom were children and women, during raids on villages in northeastern Syria, in a mass abduction coinciding with an offensive in the same region by Kurdish forces backed by US led air strikes.

The fate of many of these civilians is unclear, as is that of a number of priests who went missing and are believed to be held by the myrmidons, according to Christian groups.
