US and Afghan troops reportedly kill 22 'human shields' in anti-Taliban operation
[ABC.NET.AU] Afghan officials and local residents say 22 civilians, mostly women and kiddies, were killed during a joint operation carried out by US and Afghan forces last week in the southern Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
province.

The presidential envoy for security in Helmand, Jabar Qahraman, said the raid against Taliban bully boyz in the Sangin district killed 13 people from one family and nine from another.

"We are saddened to hear the news of civilians being killed," he said.

"When the Taliban use civilians as their shield against security forces, such incidents occur."

US Navy Captain Bill Salvin, a military front man, said: "We are working diligently to determine whether non-combatants were killed or injured as a result of US air strikes [carried out to support Afghan forces in and around Sangin]."

The investigation is "continuing and has not reached any conclusions", he added in a written statement.

The UN mission in Afghanistan meanwhile expressed "grave concern" at the violence in Helmand, saying its initial inquiries suggest air strikes by international forces killed at least 18 civilians, "nearly all women and kiddies".

Hameed Gul, a local resident, said he lost nine members of his family, including his mother and sister, in Thursday's raid.

"It's all lie that they were attacking the Taliban," he said.

Kareem Atal, the head of the provincial council in Helmand, said a man, two women and two children who were maimed in the raid have been brought to scenic provincial capital Lashkar Gah for treatment.

Helmand has seen months of heavy fighting between Afghan forces and the Taliban, who have repeatedly attacked Lashkar Gah.

Refugees cross to Canada to escape Donald Trump
Why not just get in the car and drive? It would have been much more comfortable... Oh, yes. The Secret Police.
[Al Jazeera] For five hours, Somalis Farhan Ahmed and Mohammed Mualim trekked through the barren and frigid snow-swept fields dividing North Dakota from the Canadian prairies. The snow was knee-deep and it was nearly -20 degrees Celsius.
The Brutal Dakota Winter®...
Then, out of the darkness, a highway appeared. They had arrived in Canada.
"Hurrah, hoser!"
One of them pulled out their mobile phone to call 911.
... or a cab.
"Wow, it was very, very cold," Ahmed, 36, recalled. "You could not walk about the ice. It was too much. Sometimes, it reached our knees. We didn't feel sometimes our hands, sometimes our feet."
Shoulda brought yer snow shoes.
Hours earlier, Ahmed, Mualim, and three other African men paid a man $500 to drive them from Minneapolis, Minnesota to North Dakota, just three miles south of the Canadian border. They were underdressed for the winter temperatures, wearing only light gloves and spring jackets.
They were totally unprepared because Minnesota, as everyone knows, doesn't have winter. I'm still curious why they didn't just spend the $500 on a plane ticket to Vancouver?
"Sometimes, you cannot walk because the snow is very big - sometimes above your knees," Mualim, 28, explained.
But anything to escape Trump. Bet they wished for a little Global Warming, eh?

Among them 161 arrests were made in Los Angeles and some 200 in Atlanta, said local media reports. The authorities didn't reveal the total number of the arrests.

Gillian Christensen, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, said the crackdown was part of "routine" immigration enforcement actions.

A majority of those detained were serious criminals, including some who were convicted of murder and domestic violence, she said.

"We're talking about people who are threats to public safety or a threat to the integrity of the immigration system," she said.

2 kids die in grenade mishap in Swat Valley
Two children were killed and another critically wounded in an accidental grenade explosion near Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Swat Valley on Sunday, officials said.

The children of a shepherd family were playing in a mountainous village in Buner district when they found the hand grenade and accidentally set it off, local government official Zariful Maani told AFP.

The two brothers, aged nine and 10, died, while their seven-year-old female cousin is in critical condition, Maani said.

Another local government official, Aizaz Ahmad, confirmed the details.

School-going children remain caught up in the years-long conflict between security forces and militants in the region following a Taliban insurgency in the area since 2007.

In the beginning of 2007, Taliban militants led by Maulana Fazlullah, now central chief of the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) took control of the Swat district and waged a campaign of attacking schools, killing policemen, and beheading opponents.

However, Pakistani officials say that Fazlullah fled to Afghanistan during an offensive the military launched in 2009. Despite the operation, the Taliban targeted schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai in 2012.

Mosul Offensive News

ISIS chemical bomb expert dies in Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) An Islamic State militant, the group’s chlorine bombs expert, was killed mysteriously in western Mosul as the group builds up defenses anticipating a security offensive.

Reports quoted a local source in Nineveh as saying that the so-nicknamed Abu Yaha al-Iraqi, 44, was killed near his residence in Islah al-Zeraie district in “mysterious circumstances”. He was referred to as the “engineer” of the group’s chlorine bombs.

“Al-Iraqi’s family had disappeared before his death,” the source said, noting that the fact adds to the mystery around his killers. The group was unmoved by his death, which makes it possible that its members were the perpetrators, as he put it.

IS lost the eastern section of Mosul to Iraqi government forces on January 24th after three months of battles that left at least 3000 of its fighters dead.

Since security operations launched to retake Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city and IS’s largest stronghold, the group has been ravaged with both combat losses and internal divisions. There had been several reports of infighting and assassinations of senior group figures, while others told of executions of delinquent fighters.

Iraqi forces are awaiting higher orders to carry on with an invasion of the group’s strongholds in the west.

Hamas explosives expert behind armor-piercing rocket
[JEWISHPRESS] The Izz a-Din al-Qassam military wing of the Hamas terrorist organization has announced that the terrorist killed in last week’s “work accident” in Gaza, 37-year-old Mohammad al-Kuka, was actually a high-ranking explosives expert.
Golly. I feel so... apathetic.
Al-Kuka, it turns out, was responsible for having developed an armor-piercing missile that was used during the 2014 counter terror war between Israel and Hamas, Operation Protective Edge.
With how much success?
According to Hamas, the missile is an upgraded version of a Russian anti-tank rocket, similar to an RPG with a tandem charge. It has a 500-meter range.

#1  in 2014 Operation Protective Edge, Israel did not lose any tanks (which have a lot of defensive weapons that intercept anti tank missiles) nor any of their heavy duty APCs. One of the older APCs was hit and destroyed.

too dumb for a Darwin, but perhaps worthy of a nomination for an 'ACME' (with a 'genius' cluster maybe?)

124 ISIS troops die in Syrian rebel Raqqa operation
[ARA News] Raqqa – The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Sunday announced the liberation of 98 villages in the eastern countryside of Raqqa, after clashes with Islamic State’s (ISIS) militants.

“Our forces have liberated 98 villages in an area measuring approximately 700 square kilometers in Eastern Raqqa. The progress comes as part of the Third Phase of the Euphrates Wrath Operation launched nine days ago,” SDF spokeswoman Cihan Ehmed said.

At least 124 ISIS militants were killed and dozens more wounded in the recent clashes, according to military sources.

“Our specialized teams have also dismantled 1256 landmines in the liberated areas,” Cihan said.

The SDF has also seized a large deal of ammunition and weapons from ISIS during the campaign for Eastern Raqqa.

During the first phase of Euphrates Wrath, which began on November 6, 2016, the SDF liberated roughly 560 km² in Northern Raqqa.

On 10 December, the SDF launched the second phase of the Euphrates Wrath, during which it captured over 2500 km² in Western Raqqa. The polyethnic alliance also confirmed that they had cleared 196 villages and dozens of farms.

On 4 February, the Syrian Democratic Forces announced the launch of the third phase of Euphrates Wrath Operation in Eastern Raqqa.

The campaign is ultimately aimed at isolating the ISIS radical group in its de facto capital.

ISIS shooters kill Kurd officer in Qamishli
[ARA News] Spokesman of the Kurdish Asayish forces in Syria’s Qamishli, Ali Hassan, confirmed on Sunday that an IED killed an Asayish officer and injured two others.

An explosion in the Iskenderuna Square in al-Khalij neighborhood in Syria’s northeastern Qamishli city (Qamişlo) hit a Kurdish Asayish patrol at 8:35, and resulted in the death of one Asayish officer and the injury of two others.

Local sources accused the Islamic State (ISIS) of being behind the attack. However, the group has not yet claimed the attack.

This is not the first attack that claimed the lives of Asayish members. On 9 January, Asayish officer Qehraman Omari was killed in a similar IED attack in Qamishli city.

Moreover, in an ISIS attack in July 2016 at least 50 people were killed in two separate bombings.

In December 2015, an ISIS bombing claimed the lives of at least 16 civilians in a Christian district of Qamishli.

Tahrir al-Sham: Al-Qaeda's latest incarnation in Syria
[BBC] The Syrian jihadist group Jabhat Fateh al-Sham
...formerly al-Nusra, the current false nose and mustache of al-Qaeda in the Levant...
(JFS), known as al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli al-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...
Front until it broke off formal ties with al-Qaeda last July, has merged with four smaller Syrian factions and rebranded itself as "Tahrir al-Sham".

The new group's leader has been named as Hashim al-Sheikh, who previously served as the head of the powerful Islamist rebel group, Ahrar al-Sham
...a Syria jihadi group made up of Islamists and salafists, not that there's that much difference, formed into a brigade. They make up the main element of the Islamic Front but they don't profess adoration of al-Qaeda and they've been fighting (mainly for survival) against the Islamic State. Their leadership was wiped out at a single blow by a suicide kaboom at a crowded basement meeting in September, 2014...
Ahrar al-Sham itself has refused to join the new body and has been at loggerheads with JFS in northern Syria.

On 9 February, al-Sheikh delivered the group's first leadership message in which he insisted the new entity was independent and not an extension of former organizations and factions.

By reinventing itself again, JFS appears to be trying to distance itself from its al-Qaeda past and embed itself more deeply within the Syrian insurgency.

No mention has been made of JFS leader Abu Mohammed al-Julani in any of the new group's communications. But he is widely believed to be serving as its military commander.
'Full merger'

JFS announced the creation of "Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham" (which translates in English as Liberation of Levant Organisation) in a statement that was released on 28 January via its channel on the messaging app Telegram.

The statement indicated that the groups which had agreed to join would dissolve themselves and "merge fully" into the new entity.

This was further reiterated in al-Shaikh's recent message which described the new body as a "melting pot for all factions".

In addition to JFS, Tahrir al-Sham founding groups included: Nur al-Din Zinki Movement (one of the most important opposition factions in Aleppo); jihadist Ansar al-Din Front; the Homs-based Jaysh al-Sunnah; and Liwa al-Haqq (operates in Idlib, Aleppo and Hamah).

The new entity also received the endorsement of six prominent Syria-based jihadist clerics, including the charismatic Saudi-born Abdullah al-Muhaisini. The clerics signed a separate statement announcing their intention to join Tahrir al-Sham.

Since the creation of the new entity, JFS has issued no new propaganda under the JFS brand, suggesting that it has been dissolved.

Turkish-backed fighters and Syrian regime forces risk confrontation in al-Bab
[NEWS.XINHUANET] As Turkish army and its rebel allies are pressing on a major offensive in al-Bab town in northern Syria, the advance risks confrontation with regime forces that are besieging the city from the south.

The Turkish forces and the rebels it's backing succeeded to capture a strategic hill in al-Bab last week and advanced towards the Islamic State

He vowed to move Manbij and Raqqa after al-Bab offensive in a bid to create a "terror-free zone" in northern Syria. The ultimate goal is to cleanse a 5,000-square-km area, he stated.

Syrian regime forces have been approaching towards al-Bab from the south since Feb. 6 and they were a few kilometers away from the town at the weekend.

Syrian regime forces advanced to Tadef town near al-Bab, which is located in Aleppo province's northeast, and destroyed IS stronghold, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday.

The move brings the Syrian army to the demarcation line drawn to keep the rival forces apart over an agreement between Ankara and Moscow.

leader Abu Bakr al-Bahgdadi was maimed in a recent Arclight airstrike, several Iraqi news outlets reported on Sunday.

The Iraqi television station al-Hura cited a security source saying Baghdadi and other senior members of the terror group were maimed two days ago in an Arclight airstrike in Iraq. They were reportedly transferred to Syria for treatment.

The Iraqi air force reportedly carried out the Arclight airstrike that injured Baghdadi after receiving information from the Iraqi Falcon Intelligence Cell of his whereabouts.

The security source also said Baghdadi had been living in an underground bunker and was targeted while meeting with the jihadi group’s leadership.
