Eight Brazilians sentenced for plotting jihadist attacks ahead of Rio 2016 Olympics
[DW] A Brazil judge has sentenced eight men to up to 15 years for plotting a jihadist attack on the 2016 Rio Olympics. Authorities described the group as an "amateur" and downplayed any ties to the so-called "Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
The eight Brazilian men were found guilty on Thursday of recruiting and promoting terrorism, and handed sentences of between five and 15 years

In his sentencing, Judge Marcos Josegrei da Silva said the men "exulted in and celebrated terrorist acts carried out around the world, publishing videos of executions by the Islamic State (group) and instructions on how to swear loyalty to the group's leader."

The 100-page sentence included images of the men extolling the Islamic State group online and posing in front of a flag with the words "Islamic State" scrawled on it in Arabic.

The leader in question according to Brazilian authorities was 33-year-old Leonid El Kadrem, who received the longest sentence of 15 years and 10 months.

'Amateur cell'
According to prosecutors, the group's communications focused between mid-March and July 21 last year, when the first series of arrests were announced just weeks before the start of the Games as part of an operation dubbed "Hashtag."

Brazil's then-justice minister Alexandre Moraes said the group had pledged their allegiance to the so-called "Islamic State" jihadist group but downplayed any links. "Some of them made an oath of loyalty by Internet to the Islamic State, but there was no personal contact by this group with Islamic State by WhatsApp," he said, adding that the group was "an absolutely amateur cell" and "disorganized."

The closest the group got to committing a concrete terrorist act was trying to buy black market weapons from a supplier in neighboring Paraguay. The group's members reportedly also encouraged each other to begin martial arts training.

With a reputation for being a hotbed for armed crime, authorities deployed some 85,000 coppers and military troops around Rio de Janeiro's Olympic venues.

New anti-terror laws
Thursday's ruling marked the first time that a highly debated new Brazilian anti-terror law formed the basis of a legal ruling.

Last year, Brazil's Congress passed the new law that widened the scope of what could be deemed a terror act. The new legislation dictates that anyone found guilty of "advocating terrorism" could face up to eight years in prison, and 10 to years for "joining terrorist organizations."

However,
some people cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go...
the new law drew condemnation from rights groups for failing to define "terrorism" or "terrorist." Rights advocates warned that its broad language could lead to a crackdown against freedom of speech.

ISIS Calls On Jihadists To Buy Weapons At Gun Shows
[Homeland Security] ISIS has called on jihadists to find ways of buying and acquiring firearms to wage holy war on Western infidels in the article, Just Terror Tactics, published in the 9th issue of ISIS's magazine, Rumiyah, released Thursday. The report said, "The acquisition of firearms can be very simple, depending on one’s geographical location."

The last full page of the article instructs lone wolves how to use trucks in an attack. Outdoor markets and rallies, parades and congested streets are recommended as points of attack.

"The 9th issue of Rumiyah highlights once again that one of the terror organization’s continued goal is to inspire lone wolf actors in the West, which has proven to be successful, MEMRI Executive Director Steven Stalinsky told Homeland Security Today. "An interesting note about the most recent edition and its article, Just Terror Tactics, which suggests very specific targets, shows that Westerners, including an increasing number of Americans, are not only supporting groups such as ISIS and Al Qaeda ‐ but that they continue to help and lead in the group’s propaganda efforts."

Iraq
20 ISIS shooters die in airstrike near Hawija in Kirkuk
Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) Twenty Islamic State snipers have been killed by the Iraqi fighter jets in Hawija district, west of Kirkuk.

In a statement on Thursday, the War Media Cell said “Iraqi air force launched two airstrikes that destroyed a stash of weapon of the IS militants and a snipers’ haven in addition to killing 20 snipers in Hawija.

In related news, Gen. Ali Fadel, commander of the East Dijla Operations Command, said operations to be launched soon to drive IS militants out of Hawija.

“Security troops are tightening the grip on the district. Fighter jets launched several airstrikes against several IS militants and pockets there,” Fadel said in statements earlier on Thursday.

The commander urged residents to “stay as they are in case operations were launched to liberate the district and raise white flags to be distinguished and protected by troops.”

Safe passageways, according to Fadel, “will be opened to allow civilians flee so troops would enter the district.”

Dozens of residents from Hawija and the regions in its vicinity escape to Kirkuk province on a daily basis. Despite the risky routes to the freed regions, the civilians prefer death to staying under IS control.

Hawija, located 55 KM west of Kirkuk, has been held by IS since mid-2014.

Mosul Offensive News

New offensive begins in western Mosul

(IraqiNews.com/ Reuters)Iraqi forces recaptured two locations in western Mosul on Thursday as they moved from a new direction targeting Islamic State militants at the Old City area.

Federal Police chief Shaker Jawdat said in press statements were advancing from the northwestern axis towards Haramat area, and had recaptured Hassouna village and the “Nineveh gas lab”.

Iraq’s armed forces opened a new front against Islamic State in Mosul on Thursday, advancing on the militants’ enclave from the northwest, a military commander had told Reuters.

The army’s 9th Armoured Division and the Rapid Response units of the Interior Ministry were headed towards the city, he said.

The attack would help the elite Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) and Interior Ministry Federal Police troops who were painstakingly advancing from the south, he said.

A U.S.-led international coalition is providing key air and ground support to the offensive on Mosul, Islamic State’s de facto capital in Iraq, which started in October.

The militants are now besieged in the northwestern corner of Mosul which includes the historic Old City centre and the Grand al-Nuri Mosque.

It was from the pulpit of this mosque nearly three years ago that Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared a “caliphate” that also spanned parts of Syria.

Earlier this week, Asharq al-Awsat quoted an army colonel saying the new front opens from the recaptured region of Badush, with the aim of charging at the districts of 17 Tamuz (July 17th), Harmat, Mesherfa and Hawi al-Kanisa in order to accelerate the liberation of the city.

Iraqi army forces, backed by a U.S.-led coalition and paramilitary troops, recaptured eastern Mosul from Islamic State members in January after three months of fighting. A complementary offensive launched in February to retake the western region.

Iraqi generals say they control 70 percent of the western side of Mosul, and that the total of territory held by IS in Iraq is less than seven percent.

ISIS bomber, 3 others die in Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State booby-trapping expert was killed along with three of his aides due to a blast inside a workshop in Tal Afar town, west of Mosul, a local source in Nineveh said.

“Abu Yusuf al-Halabi, a prominent expert of vehicles booby-trapping in Tal Afar, was killed along with three of his aides due to an explosion of a car while booby-trapping it inside a workshop,” the source told AlSumaria News on Thursday.

The source, who preferred anonymity, added that “al-Halabi was a Syrian national in his forties. He was called as ‘al-mohandis’ [Arabic for ‘the engineer’]”

Earlier this week, another militant, called abu-Yusuf, in charge of one of the group’s defense lines, was killed by a sniper in the vicinity of Tal Afar.

Tal Afar is one of the important strongholds still held by IS in Nineveh.

The group has sustained severe losses in personnel and ground since an offensive was launched in mid October to retake Mosul, the second-largest Iraqi city and the militants’ last urban stronghold in the country.

The number of Islamic State fighters remaining in Mosul was recently estimated by Iraqi troops at 200 to 300, mostly foreigners, down from nearly 6,000 when the offensive started.

8 ISIS operatives smoked in northwestern Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) An Islamic State leader and seven others were killed during battles in the northwest of Mosul, according to Federal Police.

“Troops resumed its advance in the northwest of Mosul to reach the bank of the river [Tigris] and besiege al-Jisr al-Khamis region, north of the Old City,” Lt.Gen. Shaker Jawdat said in statements on Thursday.

“Eight IS members, including a leader called Abu Huthaifa al-Hadidi, in charge of al-Zanjili and Ras al-Jadda regions, were killed,” he added.

In previous statements on Thursday, Jawdat said the troops were advancing from the northwestern axis towards Haramat area, and had recaptured Hassouna village and the “Nineveh gas lab”.

A military commander told Reuters earlier that armed forces opened a new front against Islamic State in Mosul on Thursday, advancing on the militants’ enclave from the northwest.

The militants are now besieged in the northwestern corner of Mosul embracing the historic Old City centre and the Grand al-Nuri Mosque, from which the group’s supreme leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi gave a famous sermon in 2014 declaring the establishment of the ‘caliphate’ in Iraq and Syria.

Eastern Mosul was recaptured in January after three months of battles. A major offensive was launched in February to retake the western flank.

11 die in Mosul airstrikes

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Eleven civilians including women and children, died Thursday in strikes by fighter jets at a district in Mosul targeted by a new offensive by the U.S.-backed Iraqi troops’ operations against the Islamic State.

Shafaaq news website quoted local sources saying that the deaths occurred when fighter jets, believed to be from the U.S.-led coalition at Hawi al-Kanisa, northwest of Mosul. The district is on the list of targets for Iraqi troops as operations take a new axis towards the strategic, IS-held Old City district.

The Iraqi command has reiterated it heeded civilians’ safety since it launched operations in October to retake Mosul from IS militants, accusing the group of fabricating reports about civilian casualties and causing the deaths itself. But the Pentagon said in March it was going to investigate reports that coalition jets killed more than 200 people in western Mosul’s al-Jadida district.

Iraqi government troops, backed by coalition fighter jets and ground paramilitary forces, recaptured eastern Mosul in January after three months of fighting, and have been sweeping through the western region since mid February, claiming to have retaken 70 percent of territory from militants.

According to the Iraqi government, the war in Mosul has displaced at last 600.000 civilians since October.

Iraqi forces capture more locations in western Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) The Iraqi armed forces have recaptured one whole district and part of another in western Mosul on Thursday.

The army’s 9th Armoured Division took over Mesherfa al-Thalitha district, according to Lt. Gen. Abdul-Amir Yarallah, commander of the Nineveh Operations. Troops also gained control on the Mesherfa water purification project and liberated the northern part of Mesherfa al-Thaniya district.

Security troops earlier liberated two villages and a street in northwestern Mosul as they resumed advance in the city, local sources said.

Joint troops of armed forces and Federal Police controlled Mesherfa town, in the northwest of Mosul, and street 60, in the Mesherfa al-Thaniya district, the sources said.

Islamic State militants used four booby-trapped vehicles, driven by suicide bombers, to hamper the troops advance.

Moreover, the troops also took over Dijla village, northwestern Mosul and freed thirty families who were held by the militants in the village, according to news reports.

According to local residents, IS militants began evacuating their families from Mesherfa and 17 Tamuz (July 17th) regions amid heavy firing to prevent civilians from fleeing.

Earlier on the day, Iraqi forces recaptured Hassouna village and the “Nineveh gas lab” in western Mosul as Iraqi armed forces opened a new front against Islamic State in Mosul on Thursday, advancing on the militants’ enclave from the northwest.

Eastern Mosul was recaptured in January after three months of battles between the militants and the Iraqi troops, backed by the U.S.-led coalition and the paramilitary troops. A new offensive was launched in February to retake the west.

Iraqi forces attack ISIS positions in northwestern Msul

[ARA News] The US-backed Iraqi forces imposed a siege on Islamic State’s (ISIS) militants in the northwestern part of the war-torn city of Mosul, officials reported on Thursday.

“The remaining Daesh [ISIS] terrorists in Mosul are now under heavy siege by the Iraqi forces in the northwestern corner of the city,” an army officer told ARA News, adding that their troops are trying to storm the last ISIS stronghold in the Old City of Mosul.

The Iraqi army said in an official statement on Thursday that its 9th Armored Division and the Rapid Response units of the Interior Ministry have opened a new front in the northwest of the city.

“Our forces are making a steady advance in the first hours of the offensive and Daesh fighters are breaking and retreating,” Iraqi Army’s Brigadier General Yahya Rasool told state television.

Mosul is Iraq’s second most populous city, and is deemed the ISIS de facto capital in Iraq. The city fell to ISIS in June 2014.

After showing heavy resistance against the US-backed troops, ISIS is now slowly being pushed, especially since the Iraqi and Kurdish forces launched on 17 October, 2016, an operation to take Mosul.

The major offensive is being supported by the US-led coalition.

The Mosul assault involves a 100,000-strong ground force of Iraqi government troops, members of the Kurdish Peshmerga forces and the Shia paramilitary Popular Mobilization Units (PMU).

Anbar Antix

Iraqi forces prepare clearing operation in Anbar

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) A limited military offensive launched Thursday to clear Anbar’s western desert areas from Islamic State militants, according to the province’s army leaders.

Maj. Gen. Mahmoud al-Falahi was quoted by Alsumaria News saying that army commando and police forces sat on a military offensive to purge the desert area which falls 160 kilometers to the west of Ramadi. The operation targets a space of 10 kilometers of that area.

Another operation is planned sooner for the desert area around the city of al-Rutba (310 Km west of Ramadi), which will be backed by tribal troops, according to Falahi.

Islamic State militants have held Anbar’s western towns of Annah, Qaim and Anbar since 2014. Fighter jets from the Iraqi army and the allied U.S.-led coalition have also regularly pounded IS locations in the province. Anbar’s military command previously launched a brief assault early January that managed to recapture some western villages before stopping again.

Local officials believe Islamic State is holding thousands of civilians at its western strongholds to use them as human shields against any future security offensive.

The Iraqi government and army commanders say they will aim at IS havens in Anbar once it is finished with eliminating the group from Mosul, its biggest bastion in Iraq.

IS has escalated its attacks against army and paramilitary forces in the province over the past few months, leaving several personnel dead.

IDF: Terrorists stashed M-16 in child’s ‘Dora the Explorer’ bed
[IsraelTimes] Shin Bet nabs 3 alleged members of a cell it says carried out 10 shooting attacks on northern West Bank settlements.

Security forces tossed in the calaboose
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
three Paleostinians suspected to have been behind 10 shootings last month, and found the assault rifle used in the attacks hidden inside a child’s Dora the Explorer bed, the army revealed on Thursday.

"This cynical exploitation of hiding things in a children’s room is known to us. It’s not the first time, and it won’t be the last time that weapons are hidden in a child’s room or other places where they think we won’t look," a senior IDF intelligence officer said.

The attacks took place in the first few days of April. The targets were the northern West Bank settlements of Shavei Shomron, Hermesh and Shaked, near the Paleostinian cities of Jenin and Nablus, as well as Israeli vehicles traveling on the roads and the IDF’s Salem checkpoint, the Shin Bet security service said.

The attacks did not result in any injuries, but did cause damage to property.

During interrogation, the suspects also admitted to planning more attacks, the Shin Bet said.

The frequent nighttime attacks "were a significant threat to civilians and security forces in the Samaria region," the security service said in a statement, using the biblical name for the northern West Bank.

The three suspected turbans were arrested in the village of Faham, southwest of Jenin, on April 4.

Two of the suspects were identified as Louie Ahmad Shafik Saabana, 34, and his cousin Mahmoud Shafik Saabana, 26. The third suspect could not be named publicly "out of operational considerations," the Shin Bet said.

The elder Saabana is an attorney linked to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Paleostine terrorist group, the Shin Bet said.

However,
you can observe a lot just by watching...
the senior intelligence officer said the suspects did not carry out the attacks on behalf of any particular organization.

"It’s still being investigated, but it looks like it was for the dumbest reasons: boredom and things like that. It didn’t come from anything seriously nationalistic or seriously religious," the officer said.

According to the Shin Bet, one of the suspects "expected to be killed during the activities and therefore prepared a will that he kept at home."

The operation to locate and arrest them was carried out by the Shin Bet, IDF and the Israel Police’s West Bank Division.

The rifle was located inside a secret compartment of the child’s bed. The IDF released pictures of where the rifle was hidden, but would not specify in which of the suspects’ houses it was found.

"The M-16 was under a girl’s bed with -- as you can see in the picture -- a Dora comforter on it. That’s the last place that we as a military want to go into and search," the senior intelligence officer said.

In addition to the M-16 assault rifle stashed in the Dora the Explorer bed, security forces elsewhere found two handguns, according to the Shin Bet. The IDF intelligence officer said the overall cost of the weapons was over NIS 100,000 ($27,600).

"These were people with a lot of money," he said.

Forces also seized a number of vehicles that were suspected of being used in the attacks, the Shin Bet said.

Indictments are to be filed in the coming days, the Shin Bet said.

on Thursday, before he was shot by Israeli troops, police said. The assailant, who ran at a Border Police officer with a knife while screaming, was taken to the hospital for medical treatment. His condition was not immediately known.

No Israeli troops were maimed in the incident, which took place at a checkpoint in the West Bank city near the Tomb of the Patriarchs.

Police originally said the attacker was also carrying a grenade and a pistol, which appeared to be fake. In a later statement on Thursday morning, police said that information was incorrect and based on suspicions, clarifying that no such items were located.

The would-be stabber was a Paleostinian Hebron resident in his 20s, police said.

On Wednesday, a knife-carrying Paleostinian man was jugged

by Israeli security forces at a checkpoint in East Jerusalem, police said. Police did not say if the man attempted to use the knife. The suspect was taken into custody unharmed, and no other injuries were reported.

Grl ISIS vigilante found dead in Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) A senior female member of the Islamic State’s vigilantism squads have been found dead west of Mosul, according to local sources.

Alsumaria News quoted the sources saying that the woman, nicknamed Um Qays, a senior official at the group’s Hisbah (religious vigilantes) division, was found dead with marks of gunshots in the chest at an unfinished house on the outskirts of Tal Afar, a major Islamic State stronghold.

The source explained that Um Qays was in charge of intelligence cells as as well as “women police” forces within the group.

Since taking over large areas of Iraq in 2014, Islamic State has employed vigilantism teams to observe commitment to its extreme religious rules among civilians under their control.

Several senior IS leaders have been reportedly killed in mysterious circumstances at Tal Afar over the past few weeks as U.S.-backed Iraqi forces launched an offensive in October to retake Mosul. The group has lost dozens of leaders since then, with the coalition commanders saying its fighters in Mosul shrunk to less than 1000. Iraqi commander say the group now holds less than seven percent of Iraqi territories, and the campaign currently presses on the group in the western side of the city.
