Afghanistan urges Iran to halt use of its nationals as mercenaries in Syria
[ARABNEWS] Afghanistan has called on Iran to stop sending Afghan refugees as mercenaries of its proxy war in Syria, after it was revealed that more than 2,000 Afghan combatants had been killed in the war so far.

"The Afghan government opposes any kind of proxy war. As we dismiss proxy war in Afghanistan, we announce our opposition to proxy war in other countries as well," Shah Hussien Murtazawi, chief front man for President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
, told Arab News.

"The blood of this country’s sons should not be spilt to further the goals and expansionist designs of a few countries ... Afghan sentiments and vulnerabilities should not be exploited for their (Iran’s) goals and objectives."

In a rare confession, an Afghan official with the "Fatemiyoun Brigade," which is composed of Afghan Shiites recruited in Iran, at the weekend said that more than 2,000 Iranian-trained members of the force had bit the dust in support of Bashir al-Assad’s regime.

The official, Zohair Mojahed, who was quoted initially by Iranian media and later became a source for Afghan press too, said that more than 8,000 Afghans had been maimed during Syria’s five-year war.

Abdullah reacts at Afghan MP’s remarks about Ahmadshah Massoud
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The chief executive of the national unity government Abdullah Abdullah
... the former foreign minister of the Northern Alliance government, advisor to Masood, and candidate for president against Karzai. Dr. Abdullah was born in Kabul and is half Tadjik and half Pashtun...
reacted at the recent remarks of an Afghan MP regarding the national hero Ahmadshah Massoud as he insisted on unity among the people.

Speaking during a meeting of the council of ministers in Kabul, Abdullah said the national hero’s role has been internationally recognized, emphasizing that the nation should respect the sacrifices of all Afghans who have laid their lives for the sake of the country.

This comes as an Afghan MP in the Lower House of the Parliament, Wolesi Jirga, Obaidullah Barekzai, had earlier said that Ahmadshah Massoud is the hero only for Panjshir province.

Barekzai went on to claim that Massoud only fought to keep Panjshir province safe and has not fought in other parts of the country.

The chief executive of Jamaat-e-Islami
Ata Mohammad Noor on Sunday also condemned the recent remarks against Ahmad Massoud.

Speaking to his supporters in Balkh province, Noor said Massoud has fought against all invaders and against thousands of forces of Evil who had came from abroad to fight the Afghans.

On the other hand, the deputy speaker of the Upper House of the Parliament, Meshrano Jirga, Mohammad Alam Izadyar also reacted at the remarks of Mr. Izadyar regarding Massoud.

He specifically pointed towards the growing controversies about the new census law that sparked divisions among the different ethnic groups and said mentioning the name of the national hero in connection to such controversies is an unfortunate move against the nation.

Afghan intelligence reacts at Hamid Gilani’s remarks about Taliban leadership
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The Afghan Intelligence, National Directorate of Security
...the Afghan national intel agency...
(NDS), strongly reacted at the recent remarks of Afghanistan Mahaz party chief Syed Hamid Gilani’s remarks regarding the leadership of the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
group.

Gilani on Saturday claimed that all the members of the leadership council of the Taliban are based in Afghanistan. He also went on to claim that the Taliban leaders are prepared to participate in peace talks with the Afghan government and that his party will form a delegation with the Ulema Council members to start peace efforts.

However,
some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them...
the Afghan intelligence, National Directorate of Security (NDS), in a statement said Monday that it condemns the recent remarks by Gilani regarding the Taliban group leadership. The statement further added that the Taliban group leadership council members are all based on the other side of the Durand Line and in key cities of Pakistain.

NDS in statement also added that the international community also has a well understanding regarding the issue regarding the Taliban safe havens in Pakistain.

This comes as a senior US State Department official said last week that "We believe that there is significant evidence that leadership of the Haqqani Network resides inside Pakistain and is able to plan and execute from Pakistain attacks inside Afghanistan. So the disagreement is much more about those facts than it is on our overarching goals in the strategy. And we need them to address these sanctuaries in order for us to be able to be enabled to succeed in Afghanistan."

Sudanese students stone police on third day of bread price protests
[ARABNEWS] Hundreds of Sudanese students on Monday threw rocks at riot police and were met with tear gas salvos on the third consecutive days of protests over a doubling in bread prices, witnesses said.

They said police formed a cordon to force more than 300 marchers onto the campus of Khartoum University, the largest in Sudan, and continued to fire tear gas at students chanting, "No, no, no to price rises!"

A smaller number of protesters gathered in Kosti, Sudan’s biggest Nile river port 350 km (217 miles) south of the capital, but were dispersed by baton-wielding police.

Street protests broke out across the sprawling northeastern African country after bread prices doubled following a government announcement late last month that it was eliminating subsidies in its 2018 budget.

A high school student was killed and six others maimed on Sunday in the southwestern city of Geneina. Authorities did not give a cause of death but said investigations were under way.

This month Sudan devalued its pound currency to 18 per US dollar from 6.7 pounds to the dollar previously.

Amid the continuing unrest, the exchange rate on the black market hit about 29.5 pounds to the dollar on Monday, compared with 28 pounds to the dollar a day before.

As chaos and despair grow in Libya, Qadhafi son plans comeback
[DAWN] THE runaway son and one-time heir apparent of Libya’s late Muammar Qadaffy
...a proud Arab institution for 42 years, now among the dear departed, though not the dearest...
is planning a comeback.

Seif al-Islam "decided to run in presidential elections and I see a big chance for him because all the big tribes are supporting him," said Abdel Majeed al-Mansouri, who headed Libya’s economic development board before 2011 and was close to him. "People are frustrated. Even those who were against the old regime will side with him as he’s not coming back representing the old regime. He’s coming with his plan for Libya’s future."

Yemen: Party of slain Saleh elects new chief
[DAWN] The political party of Yemen’s former president former President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh

Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. rebel allies, on Sunday named his replacement.

The General People’s Congress, a key player in Yemeni politics for decades, elected former deputy premier Sadiq Amin Aburas by consensus at a meeting of its general committee, it said in a statement.

It made no mention of the Houthis, but said it would continue to "reject and resist aggression and siege" against Yemen, a reference to a military campaign being waged since 2015 by a Saudi-led coalition.

Aburas, 65, is seen as having been close to Saleh, the long-time Yemeni strongman killed by Houthi button men on Dec 4 after their alliance collapsed.

Saleh held power in the Arabian Peninsula country for three decades before being ousted in 2012 following mass protests.

He later allied with his former enemies, the Iran-backed Houthis, to seize the capital in 2014 from the internationally backed government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

That prompted Iran’s regional arch-rival Soddy Arabia

to lead an intervention against the alliance the following year.

In late 2017, the Saleh-Houthi alliance fell apart after Saleh offered to "turn the page" with Riyadh in return for a ceasefire and the lifting of a crippling blockade.

That sparked fighting in the streets of Sanaa, and Saleh was bumped off as he tried to flee.

The GPC said Aburas would lead it until its next general assembly, a date for which could not yet be set "because of the current difficulties". Aburas also heads the party’s five-member executive committee.

Qatar slammed for funding ‘terrorist’ Muslim Brotherhood in UK
Oh my.
[ARABNEWS] Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates. Home of nutbag holy manYusuf al-Qaradawi...
has been strongly criticized for its alleged funding of the Moslem Brüderbund in the UK by a senior British Army veteran and counter-insurgency expert, who also called the group a "terrorist organization."

Col. Tim Collins, who served in Northern Ireland and the second Iraq War, was speaking in Westminster and said the Moslem Brüderbund was a problem in the UK and that the government needed to challenge it more.

He also hit out at Qatar for allegedly funding the organization, questioning why they would "hurt a friend."

"(The Moslem Brüderbund) has been a problem and continues to be a problem in the United Kingdom and we need to challenge it ‐ and indeed it is challenging our response to terrorism," Collins told Arab News.

"In fairness to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
they are not actively promoting it in this country. I understand why they would have a close relationship with the Moslem Brüderbund given the nature of Ottoman Turkish politics, but the Qataris are actively funding this, what do they think they are doing?"

"We are a close ally and we stood by them in tumultuous times. They’ve been isolated in the Gulf yet we’ve stood by them, we have to ask them to show their friendship and comradeship and stop doing this.

"It’s not using leverage, what you say to friends is ’why are you hurting us, why are you doing this?’"

Four years ago the UK government ordered a review into the Moslem Brüderbund. The result, the Jenkins Commission, concluded that the organization ‐ while outwardly purporting peaceful means to promote its agenda ‐ was willing to use violence and terror in pursuit of its long-term goals and that aspects of its ideology and tactics "are contrary to the (UK’s) national interests and security."

Europe
Greece Suspends Asylum for Turkish 'Coup' Officer
[AnNahar] A Greek court suspended Monday the asylum status granted to a Ottoman Turkish military helicopter co-pilot who fled the country following last year's failed coup, days after Ankara criticized the decision.

The Athens Administrative Court of Appeal said it had "temporarily suspended the asylum for reasons of public interest" following an appeal by the Greek government.

The co-pilot -- who flew seven other Ottoman Turkish military officers to Greece the day after the failed coup in July 2016 -- was granted asylum at the end of December after Greek authorities ruled that his human rights

would be at risk.

The Ottoman Turkish Foreign Ministry complained at the time that the ruling was "politically motivated" and "once again reveals that Greece is a country that protects and embraces plotters."

The Greek government said it requested the status was suspended because it "endangered diplomatic relations" with The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund....
The case is now scheduled for a hearing on February 15.

A ruling on the seven other military officers is due to be made in the coming weeks.

"This is an important decision, we welcome it with satisfaction," Ottoman Turkish government front man Bekir Bozdag said on Monday.

He added that the extradition of the "eight putschists" would have a positive impact on relations between the two countries.

However,
today is that tomorrow you were thinking about yesterday...
the Greek government has repeatedly supported a ruling by the Greek Supreme Court last January which blocked the extradition of the group, saying that they would not have a fair trial in Turkey.

Turkey to extend state of emergency for sixth time
[IsraelTimes] The Ottoman Turkish government says it plans to extend the state of emergency imposed after the 2016 failed coup for the sixth time, despite criticism that it is used to target Ankara’s critics.

Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag says the state of emergency will be "extended one more time" for three months and would be discussed at the next National Security Council meeting. The latest extension is set to end on January 19.

The emergency was introduced a few days after the attempted overthrow of Erdogan on July 15, 2016, blamed on the group led by US-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen
... a Turkish preacher living in Pennsylvania whom the current govt of Turkey considers responsible for all the ills afflicting Turkey and possibly the entire world...
Gulen denies the charges but authorities have used the emergency measures to crack down on those alleged to have links to his movement as well as outlawed Kurdish Death Eaters.

(ISIS/ISIS/IS) wing in South Asia is intensifying its presence in Pakistain, particularly in areas along the country’s border with war-ravaged Afghanistan, the Pakistain Institute for Peace Studies (PIPS) think tank cautions in a new report.

According to the U.S. military, the majority of ISIS jihadists in South Asia are Pak ‐ former members of the Tehrik-e-Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
Pakistain (TTP) terrorist group.

ISIS-K is "actively recruiting from the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain," reiterated American Gen. John Nicholson, the top commander of U.S. and NATO

troops in Afghanistan, in November. "So as you’ll recall, when the Pakistain army ... in 2014 pushed a lot of the TTP into Afghanistan ‐ hundreds of thousands of TTP fighters and their families pushed into Afghanistan and it’s from these ranks that [ISIS] has been recruiting heavily."

"Most of these [ISIS] fighters came from Pakistain," stressed Nicholson, noting that about 1,000 ISIS jihadists are in Afghan provinces that border Pakistain, including "600 to 800" in Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
, considered the group’s primary bastion in the region.

The Afghan Taliban and its Pak counterpart consider themselves two separate organizations.

TTP jihadists, their affiliates, and other faceless myrmidons with similar objectives, including ISIS members, carried out nearly 60 percent (213) of the total 370 reported attacks in Afghanistan last year, notes PIPS.

The Islamic State (IS) alone was allegedly responsible for the six deadliest attacks in Pakistain, which killed 153 people in 2017.

"IS has grabbed credit for just six terrorist attacks in the country, but they were the most deadliest ones," Muhammad Ismail Khan, the senior project manager at the PIPS think tank, told Dawn.

"There is a need to take the matter more seriously because there is a possibility that imported muscle would come to Pakistain in near future as things are continuously changing in the Middle East," he added.

As the so-called ISIS caliphate in Iraq and Syria continues to collapse at the hands of the U.S.-led coalition and its allies, the ISIS branch in the Afghanistan-Pakistain region is growing, according to the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...

declared the American combat mission in Afghanistan over at the end of 2014.

"Despite a 16% decline in terrorist attacks in 2017, Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain and its associated groups remained the most potent threat [in Pakistain]; they were followed by nationalist-insurgent groups," reveals the report.

"Nationalist bad boy groups," including snuffies seeking independence in the Balochistan

region, were responsible for 138 attacks in Pakistain, which killed 140 people and injured another 265 people, notes the PIPS think tank.

Most of the 2017 casualties in Pakistain are civilians, but they also include security and law enforcement personnel as well as bad boys.

"The report noted that as compared to 2016, the attacks in the country from across Afghan, Indian and Iranian borders in 2017 witnessed a significant surge (131pc). A total of 171 cross-border attacks claimed 188 lives and left 348 people injured," reports Dawn.

While Afghanistan and the United States accuse Islamabad of harboring the Afghan Taliban, Pakistain claims Kabul provides sanctuary to TTP.

Political parties playing the religion card to woo voters in Chakwal
[DAWN] CHAKWAL: Instead of any future manifesto for development or reforms, PML-N and Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
(PTI) politicians involved in Chakwal’s upcoming by-election appear to be relying on the religion card to woo voters.

The PP-20 by-election is scheduled to be held on Jan 9.

The key PML-N supporter in the district is the Tehrik Khuddam Ahl-e-Sunnat Waljamaat (TKASW), founded by the late Maulana Qazi Mazhar Hussain. The TKASW is the main representative of the Deobandi sect in Chakwal, and is currently led by Qazi Zahoorul Hussain Azhar, the founder’s son.

The hardliner organization regularly holds religious gatherings in various parts of the district, to which PML-N leaders are invited as chief guests. PML-N Chairman Raja Zafarul Haq also frequents Madni Mosque, the headquarters of the organization located in the heart of the city.

With the PML-N under criticism from Barelvi leaders over the controversial amendment to the Election Bill, the TKASW has decided to back the ruling party’s candidate, as it has done for years, but at a price.

The organization has decided to back PML-N candidate Chaudhry Sultan Haider Ali Khan, who arrived at Madni Mosque a few days ago with MNA Tahir Iqbal, MPA Zulfiqar Ali Khan and others, and was presented a written statement by the TKASW that he was asked to read out.

By reading the statement, he assured the audience: "By the grace of Allah I am a Moslem belonging to the Sunni sect. I admit Prophet Muhammad (PTUI!) as the last prophet. I declare Mirza Ghulam Ahmed Qadiani and his followers as non-Moslem. Furthermore, I condemn the recent amendment regarding Khatm-e-Nabuwat, although I think it was not done intentionally."

Mr Khan vowed that he would consider it is his obligation and honour to quit the government if it dared to introduce any legislation against Islam or against the finality of the Prophet and the sanctity of his lover companions.

After reading the statement, the 32-year-old aspirant for the provincial assembly seat went a step ahead to appease the leaders and workers of the TKASW.

"As my brother Zulfiqar Ali Khan highlighted that Ahmadis are currently holding key posts, I feel proud that our party’s Capt (retired) Safdar sahib talked about this issue on the floor of the National Assembly for the first time."

He said if Allah gave him an opportunity to reach the assembly, he would also raise this issue.

"The need of the hour is to remove Qadianis from public posts; rather they should be banished from the country," Mr Khan added, as he sought guidance from the TKASW chief.

In that speech, Sufi Muhammad had termed the Constitution "un-Islamic" and demanded enforcement of the Sharia.

In today's hearing, Sufi Muhammad claimed that he should be released "as his health is deteriorating with each passing day."

The TNSM chief has been kept imprisoned since his arrest in 2009, when the final phase of a military operation against snuffies was launched in the Malakand region.

A number of cases were registered against Sufi Muhammad; however, in each case, witnesses against him had either died or could not be traced.

[DAWN] Pakistain Awami Tehrik (PAT) chief Tahirul Qadri
...Pak politician, and would-be dictator, founder and head of Tehreek-e-Minhajul Quran and Pakistain Awami Tehrik. He usually resides in Canada, but returns to Pakistain periodically to foam at the mouth and lead demonstrations. Depending on which way the wind's blowing, Qadri claims to be the author of Pak's blasphemy law. Other times he says it wasn't him...
on Monday ‐ making good on an earlier threat ‐ called for a nationwide movement starting January 17 with an eye on ousting the PLM-N government.

Addressing a presser in Lahore following a meeting with key opposition leaders, Qadri regretted that Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif
...Pak dynastic politician, brother of PM Nawaz Sharif, chief minister of Punjab...
and Law Minister Rana Sanaullah were "given a seven-day deadline to tender their resignations but they failed to do so".

"Now we will not ask for resignations, but will take them ourselves. We will not stop at resignations but will bring down the PML-N government too," Qadri said.

The PAT chief believes the incumbent government has lost its moral standing and should have been dissolved. "Now we will kick off nationwide protests in a bid to topple the PML-N government," he said.

US conveys 'concrete' steps Pakistan must take to resume security aid flow
[DAWN] The United States has told Pakistain what it must do if it wants Washington to resume paying out hundreds of millions of dollars in security aid, the Pentagon said on Monday.

"Our expectations are straightforward," Pentagon front man Colonel Rob Manning told news hounds.

"Taliban
...Arabic for students...
and Haqqani leadership and attack planners should no longer be able to find safe haven or conduct operations from Pak soil."

Last week, President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
froze payments from the "Coalition Support Fund" for Pakistain, worth $900 million, saying Pakistain is not doing enough to target Afghan Taliban and Haqqani group bases.

The coalition funding is set aside to refund Pak spending on counter-terrorism operations.

Also in question is almost $1 billion of US military equipment that has allowed Pakistain access to advanced military technology.

"The United States has conveyed to Pakistain specific and concrete steps that it could take," Manning said.

"We stand ready to work with Pakistain to combat terrorist groups without distinction. We will continue these conversations with the Pak government in private."

Pentagon officials are watching to see if Pakistain is going to retaliate against the US by cutting supply lines to US troops from its port at Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
into Afghanistan.

So far, Manning said, there was no sign Islamabad was preparing to take that course of action. He stressed that the suspension of funding was not permanent "at this time" and that the money was not being diverted elsewhere.

Pakistan warns US over military offensive against Taliban
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] As the US military is gearing up to increase pressures on Taliban
...Arabic for students...
through military offensives as part of the new US strategy, the Pak officials have reportedly warned Washington regarding the negative consequences in the event the military operation does not yield any positive result.

According to reports, Islamabad has told US interlocutors that a major military offensive against the Taliban from both sides of the Afghan border, if ending in failure, will have negative consequences for the entire region.

According to Pakistain’s Dawn News, citing diplomatic sources, the key element in the new US strategy for Afghanistan is to launch a two-pronged military offensive that inflicts a military defeat on the Taliban and forces them to join the Afghan reconciliation process on Kabul’s conditions.

This comes as the foreign minister of Pakistain Khwajah Asif has told the Wall Street Journal that Islamabad would not allow the Afghan war to be fought on Pakistain’s soil.

"We have relative calm in Pakistain at the moment," Asif said. "But if we go against these people [Afghan krazed killers], then the war will again be fought on our soil, which will suit the Americans," he added.

In the meantime, pressures are on the rise on Islamabad to act against the Afghan Taliban, Haqqani network, and other bully boyz having safe havens in Pakistain.

The US President Donald Trump

last week criticized Pakistain in strong words for harboring the terrorist groups despite receiving billions in aid to support the counter-terrorism efforts in Afghanistan.

Iraq
Maliki rejects joint electoral list with Abadi: Dawa Party
[ARABNEWS] Former Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki will participate in the forthcoming parliamentary election, but refuses to do so as part of a joint electoral list with his successor Haider Abadi, big shots of the Islamic Dawa Party told Arab News.

Both Abadi and Maliki belong to the party. The current prime minister replaced his predecessor in September 2014 following widespread opposition to Maliki’s desire for a third term. Tensions between the two have persisted ever since.

So far, 205 political parties and 12 registered alliances will participate in the election, which is due to take place on May 12, the Independent High Electoral Commission told Arab News.

Ali Alaq, a Dawa leader, told Arab News that the party "wants to participate in the election in one electoral list."

This "will preserve the interests of the party and won’t disperse the (electoral) votes, but Maliki has another opinion," Alaq said.

But Maliki’s political adviser Abbas Mossowie told Arab News: "Participating in two electoral lists, one headed by Maliki and the other by Abadi, has been discussed during recent party meetings."

Mossowie added: "The final decision hasn’t been made yet, but the majority (of the party) supports having two lists. Maliki prefers to run the election in two lists."

The rebuilding of the security establishment, the retaking of territory lost to ISIS and the Kurds, and increased international and regional support for Abadi’s government, contributed to his nomination as head of Dawa’s electoral list, party leaders told Arab News.

"Abadi is more worthy than anyone else to head the list. Our field research suggests he has a great chance at re-election as head of the next government," a Dawa leader told Arab News on condition of anonymity.

"There’s almost an international, Arab and popular consensus on Abadi. He deserves to win another term to finish his work on the economy, fight corruption and rebuild liberated areas."

Maliki believes that Abadi, Dawa and his Shiite rivals betrayed him when they opposed him having a third term even though he gained the most votes in the 2014 election.

Iraqi government orders probe into Kurdistan region's oil exports
[ARABNEWS] The Iraqi parliament on Monday launched an investigation into the quantities of oil exported by the Kurdish regional government (KRG) during the past three years from Kirkuk’s oil fields and the Kurdish region.

It is seeking to prosecute officials involved in oil smuggling and to monitor their bank accounts inside and outside of Iraq.

KRG took advantage of the dramatic collapse of the Iraqi Army in June 2014 to drive Iraqi security forces out of the northern oil hub city of Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
its lucrative oil fields and all the nearby disputed areas. It seized control of oil exports from the area until Oct. 26 when Baghdad launched a huge military offensive to drive Kurdish forces into the Kurdish region.

KRG has been exporting an average of 400,000-650,000 bpd from Kirkuk and the fields of the Kurdish region, but exports have halved since October as the federal government in Baghdad imposed a series of punitive measures including banning international flights from and to the region and shut down the border crossings between the region and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Palestinian Authority paid terrorists nearly $350 million in 2017
[Jpost] The Palestinian Authority paid terrorists and their families over $347 million last year, according to its own records, the Defense Ministry reported to the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Tuesday.

The average income of a Palestinian is $580 per month, which is what the PA pays terrorists who are sentenced to three to five years in prison.

The PA pays terrorists who are sentenced to 20 years or more in prison ‐ in other words, those who committed more severe crimes, and likely were involved in killing Israelis ‐ five times that each month for the rest of their lives.

Terrorists who are Israeli citizens receive a $145 bonus, which, when added to the amount PA pays for the most severe crimes, comes to over $2,900, more than the average Israeli income of around $2,700 per month. There are also increases in pay for being married and for each child a terrorist has.

Southeast Asia
Another Marawi-type siege may be coming, says Philippines
[ARABNEWS] Troops should prepare for a possible repeat of the Marawi siege in "another city" in the country, Philippine Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana told them on Monday.

Lorenzana admitted that more foreign turbans are reported to have entered Mindanao.

In a speech during the Philippine Army Special Operations Command (SOCOM) turnover ceremony here, the defense chief warned the troops that they will again be called upon later on, or "maybe immediately" as there’s still "some work to do in Mindanao.

"It is not far-fetched that one of these days they (ISIS-inspired turbans) will again hold another city for quite some time."

Lorenzana made the statement after a petition urged the Supreme Court to stop the year-long extension of martial law in Mindanao. The petitioners claimed martial law has no factual and legal basis.

But in a news conference after the turnover ceremony, the defense chief expressed readiness to defend the extension of martial law as there is "continuing rebellion" in the southern Philippines.

"It started in May and continued until October. It is the belief of the armed forces and the police that there is continuing reorganization of the rebellious forces. They would again conduct a Marawi-type operation some time in the future. I also believe that," Lorenzana said.

He added that "the rebellious forces were not all killed in Marawi." Quite a number, according to the defense chief, "were able to extricate themselves, and they (now) are somewhere there in Mindanao.

"Some of them are in Central Mindanao, some are in Lanao," Lorenzana said.

Based on reports from the military, the police and also from civilians, recruitment is in progress and there are also small groups conducting training.

"So we will address those during this martial law extension," Lorenza stated.

When asked to confirm a statement by a Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) official on the arrival of more imported muscle in Mindanao, Lorenzana said: "That is also what we got and we are trying to confirm it. That’s also another reason why it bolsters our argument to extend the martial law."

Lorenzana noted that if it is confirmed that more foreign turbans have entered the country, "the more we are going to do it strictly in Mindanao, fighting against them using martial law."

Mohagher Iqbal, chair of the MILF peace panel, earlier told Arab News that despite the liberation of Marawi City in October last year, ISIS-oriented groups in Mindanao have not been completely defeated.

"And as far as an intelligence report is concerned, their recruitment is ongoing in Mindanao," he said. "Expect that they will surface once again."

The MILF official added that "reports of the arrival of ISIS personalities from the Middle East is very much happening in Mindanao, especially in the island province of Sulu and Basilan
...Basilan is a rugged, jungle-covered island in the southern Philippines. It is a known stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf, bandidos, and maybe even orcs. Most people with any sense travel with armed escorts...

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran FM warns neighbours, says they seeking unrest in Iran
[DAWN] Iran's foreign minister on Monday warned neighbouring countries over fomenting insecurity in Iran in a reference to anti-government protests that have roiled the country over the past two weeks.

The remarks by Mohammad Javad Zarif at a security conference in Tehran echoed the Iranian authorities' stance, which alleges that foreign powers including regional rival Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
stirred up unrest linked to the protests.

"Some countries tried to misuse the recent incidents," Zarif said without blaming any specific country, and added that "no country can create a secure environment for itself at the expense of creating insecurity among its neighbours."

"Such efforts" will only backfire, the official IRNA news agency quoted Zarif as saying.

The anti-government demonstrations first broke out in Mashhad, Iran's second-largest city, on Dec 28 and later spread to several other cities and towns.

The protests were the largest seen in Iran since the disputed 2009 presidential election. They were sparked by a hike in food prices amid soaring unemployment but some demonstrators later called for the government's overthrow and chanted against the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

What Makes the Recent Unrest Different
[IRANWIRE] An editorial published in Iran’s Javan Newspaper, which is closely linked to the Revolutionary Guards, has set out reasons why the recent protests, which began in Mashhad on December 28 and began spreading to several provincial cities the next day, are unlike any previous unrest Iran has experienced over the last almost four decades.

The article was written by Dr. Abdollah Ganji, the paper’s managing editor, who holds a PhD in political science and is a professor at Allameh Tabatabaei University.

Recent spates of unrest in some cities in the country have, in their own way, brought a new experience to the people and the state that can add to earlier experiences and offer new and different lessons and attitudes. These instances of unrest have characteristics that make them different from all other riots, protests and unrest after the revolution, although they might share certain aspects with previous cases in terms of how foreigners have handled it.

#1  The decisions rest with Khameni and IRGC. Were will you sit when the music stops?

Iran is my biggest problem as a Nation State.
It makes the Sunni crazy.

On the other hand, where would my Shia be with no state sponsor?

The mind reels but again, the islam is supposed to be stateless, no?

So convert or die belongs to anyone that does not believe your brand of islam, no?

I have no clue how you all involved GOD Almighty in your little un-checked book but I do recall an edict that anyone who tries to add or take away from MY Bible should be put to death.

What do you think about those apples?

Had I sat in Mine Temple and looked at you from there, you may have learned that I AM not with you.

Who names their nation "The Race"?

You are foreigners with foreign and alien law that Persians only have to deal with temporarily. Or maybe they can correct Persia all by themselves.

But I will be watching... and tweeting.
