[DAWN] A Ottoman Turkish court incarcerated Book 'im, Mahmoud! a paedophile a record 572 years for abusing 18 children at the school where he worked, reports said on Tuesday, as alarm grows over the extent of child abuse in the country.
The court in the southern province of Adiyaman convicted the janitor after it was found he raped children and would sneak into some of the pupils' beds, Hurriyet daily said.
The defendant was found guilty of multiple crimes including "child sexual abuse" for which he was given 30 years for each of the 18 boys he abused, the newspaper reported.
He was also sentenced to 32 years for other crimes including "depriving someone of their liberty", "obscenity" and "blackmail", thus adding up to 571 years 11 months and 25 days, Dogan News Agency and Hurriyet reported.
The paedophile started working at a high school offering a specialised religious education, known as an Imam Hatip school, in 2012 but lived at the school between 2013 and 2015, the newspaper said.

[Al Jazeera] Back in September 2016, at the 71st United Nations ...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense... General Assembly, Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos triumphantly announced "the end of war in Colombia".
Since 2012, Santos' government had been negotiating with the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC), an gang that fought the Colombian state for over 50 years. In August 2016, negotiators announced a final agreement to end the conflict that had left 220,000 people dead and displaced millions. Last year, the rebel group relaunched as a political party, changing their logo of rifles for a red rose.
But the historic deal that brought peace to Colombia is now failing. This should come as no surprise after the political gymnastics Santos was forced to perform following the Colombian public's initial rejection of the treaty in an October 2016 referendum. For Colombia, this means an uncertain and problematic presidential election later this year and, worse, a possible end to an already wobbly peace.

[Al Jazeera] The Church of the Holy Sepulchre has announced it will reopen its doors after Israel decided to suspend legislation regarding collecting taxes from churches and their properties in Jerusalem.
Following international pressure and rising protests from Paleostinian Christians, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the formation of a committee to discuss the imposition of the property tax, or arnona, on Jerusalem's churches.
The decision came following a meeting between Netanyahu and the Israeli mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barakat, and after one of the holiest sites in Christianity, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, closed its doors on Sunday in protest against the proposed legislation.
The committee will be headed by Tzachi Hanegbi, the Israeli minister of regional cooperation.

The taxation is on the rental and commercial properties the various Christian churches own in and around Jerusalem, including the land on which the Knesset, Israel’s parliament sits, and on sales to private developers. The legislation would extend to the churches the same treatment meted out to synagogues.

#1 & #2 - Ouch. My guess is that the tax savings from churches and their properties in Jerusalem is pumped back into various charitable purposes, with lite-graft. The committee needs to focus on the revenue gleaned and the charity given.
Does this seem screwed-up to anyone else? Paying perps $180K for mugshots?
[GatewayPundit] Three Muslim women won $180,000 for their suffering after they were arrested and forced to remove their hijabs for their mugshots.
The Muslim women said they felt exposed and violated after they were forced to remove their hijabs for mugshots.
One of the women, Mervat Soliman, 53, was arrested after a tussle with mother-daughter neighbors over a parking spot near her Glendale home in January 2015.
"New York City will have to pay out $180,000 to three Muslim women after forcing them to take off their hijabs for mugshots.
Three lawsuits were settled Monday in Brooklyn federal court stemming from the NYPD policy of photographing people wearing religious head coverings, the New York Daily News reported. The three women settled for $60,000 each.
Some cases date to 2012, when a high school girl ‐ identified as "G.E." ‐ was arrested after a brawl with two other girls whom she thought spread gossip about her.
G.E. was initially brought to a local police station and was told to take off her hijab. G.E. refused and was taken to a secluded room where a female police officer took her photo outside the presence of any men, the Daily News reported.
But at Brooklyn Central Booking the police could not accommodate the girl’s religious needs, telling her that there were not any female officers available and that the camera is in a fixed spot, thus the mugshot could not be taken in a private room.
The girl alleged that a male officer then took her photo without a hijab, making her feel "exposed, violated and distraught" as she was forced to be without the Islamic garb for 20 minutes while male officers and prisoners looked at her."

Her suffering consisted of being looked at by male police personnel. Really, 20 minutes of that is worth $60,000? The entire thing is proof that much of our population has lost their minds.

[DAWN] The US Supreme Court on Tuesday curbed the ability of immigrants colonists held in long-term detention during deportation proceedings to argue for their release in a ruling in sync with President Donald Trump ...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States... ’s get-tough approach toward immigration.
The court’s conservative justices carried the day in a 5-3 decision that overturned a lower court’s ruling that required that immigrants colonists held by the US government who are awaiting the outcome of deportation proceedings get a bond hearing after six months of detention to seek their release.
The ruling could lead to indefinite detentions of certain classes of immigrants colonists, including some with legal status who the government wants to deport.
The court’s five conservatives were in the majority in the ruling written by Justice Samuel Alito, and three liberals dissented, including Justice Stephen Breyer, who sharply criticised the decision. Another liberal, Justice Elena Kagan, did not participate in the ruling.
Class action litigation brought by the American Civil Liberties Union challenged the government’s practice of placing immigrants colonists facing deportation proceedings in detention for months or years without a chance to argue for release.

Personally I don't think illegal aliens should have any standing whatsoever in an immigration court - including 'deportation'. They are not immigrants and, as such, should not enjoy any immigration processes. Simply dump them across the border without a hearing.
But that's just me...

A U.S. judge on Tuesday sided with President Donald Trump’s administration and rejected an attempt by the state of California and environmental groups to stop the government from building a wall on the U.S. border with Mexico.
The lawsuit filed in a San Diego federal court alleged that Trump's proposed wall violates federal environmental standards, as well as constitutional provisions regarding the separation of powers and states' rights.
The plaintiffs asked U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel to stop the administration from pursuing the barrier until it demonstrates compliance with environmental laws.
The wall, a key item for Trump's political base of supporters, has become a sticking point in talks to keep alive a federal program that protects from deportation young people who were brought to the United States illegally as children. Start the damn fence/wall. The Dems, like Paleos, can learn to negotiate from weakness and facts on the ground
In his latest budget proposal to Congress, Trump requested $23 billion for border security, most of it for building the wall.
Curiel said his decision on Tuesday was not based on whether the underlying decisions to construct the wall "are politically wise or prudent." Rather, Curiel said the Trump administration had not exceeded its legal authority in pursuing the project. Same judge Trump accused of probably ruling against him because he was a Mexican in the Trump U case. Heh.
