Air strike kills four civilians in Afghanistan
[DAWN] An air strike by security forces killed four people and wounded eight others who were part of a wedding procession in the Afghan province of Kandahar, officials said on Friday.

Abdul Raziq, the Kandahar police chief, said Taliban militants had mounted an attack in the Maroof district when security forces responded with an air strike on Thursday.

“They [Taliban] tried to flee and got mixed up with villagers at a wedding procession.

“The air strike killed four civilians, including women and children, and 10 Taliban militants,” he said.

Aziz Ahmad Azizi, the provincial governor’s spokesman, said that Taliban fighters attacked villages in Maroof district but faced strong resistance by police. He said one policeman was killed and three others wounded.

Ten Taliban were killed and eight were wounded in the battle, he said. After that, the militants hid in people’s houses, leading to civilian casualties in the air strike. Kandahar province, on the border with Pakistan, is a major centre of opium cultivation and a stronghold of the Taliban.

Afghan officials said the incident was still being investigated and it was unclear whether the casualties had been caused by Afghan or US aircraft, both of which flew missions in support of the operation.

A Nato spokesman said its aircraft were not involved. “I can confirm we did not participate in any operations near Maroof [district] within the past 24 hours,” said Col Knut Peters, a Nato spokesman in Kabul.

[Dhaka Tribune] Two members of banned hard boy outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen (JMB) have been killed in a suicide kaboom during a raid on their hideout in Chittagong.

Acting on a tip-off,
[RING!]

several units of RAB 7 cordoned off a house at Sonapahar village under Mirsarai Upazila ‐ suspecting it to be a hard boy hideout ‐ around 3:30am on Friday.

The hard boyz hiding inside the house fired at RAB, triggering a shootout, RAB officials said.

The exchange of fire continued for about half an hour. At one stage, the hard boyz went kaboom! two bombs when RAB members asked them to surrender.

The two hard boyz killed in the suicide blast are yet to be identified.

The magnitude of the blast partially destroyed the roof, damaged the walls, and ripped off the windows of the house, RAB 7 Deputy Commanding Officer Safayat Jamil Fahim told the Dhaka Tribune.

"We interrogated the owner and caretaker of the house. They told us that there was also a female hard boy. They had been living in the house since September 29," he added.

The female hard boy somehow managed to escape, he further said.

RAB’s bomb disposal squad destroyed two IEDs, and recovered: three hand grenades, ammunition, three pistols, and an SMG.

An AK 22 rifle and raw materials for explosives were also recovered from the hard boy hideout.

RAB’s Legal and Media Wing Director Mufti Mahmud Khan said that the hard boyz were planning to carry out a large-scale attack on the Chittagong court.

The severely disfigured bodies of the two hard boyz have been sent to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital for an appointment with Dr. Quincy.

Latakia: turbans ignore ceasefire, shell 8 settlements, Turkish proxies destroy Syrian army post

Several settlements in Syria’s Latakia come under shelling by militants

[ALMASDARNEWS] Several ceasefire violations by Death Eaters were reported in Syria’s Latakia governorate over the past day. One civilian was maimed in the settlement of Sandran, chief of the Russian Center for Reconciliation of the Opposing Parties Vladimir Savchenko said on Friday.

"During the day, shelling attacks were reported from the settlements of Beit Smaira, Sandran, Shir al-Sabah, Barisha, Rueyset Iskander, Safsafa, Ikko and Tell al-Tut in the Latakia governorate. As a result of shelling, one civilian was maimed in the settlement of Sandran in the Latakia governorate," he said.

Apart from that, officers of the Russian reconciliation center delivered a tonne of bread to Aleppo’s Arabal neighborhood. Food products were delivered to 15 families as targeted humanitarian assistance, Savchenko added.
How extended were the families, if they needed a literal tonne of bread?

Jihadists overwhelm Syrian forces in northern Latakia

[ALMASDARNEWS] A group of jihadist rebels carried out a powerful attack on a Syrian Arab Army (SAA) post in the northeastern countryside of the Latakia Governorate this week.

The jihadist group, Fursan al-Iman,
...also known as Fursan’ul Iman, the Turkish-speaking faction operates in Latakia. Their Twitter feed, Telegram channel and Instagram page all appeared online on May 30, 2018. They fight against the Syrian government alongside Ansar al-Islam and other Turkmen jihadists...
targeted and destroyed a Syrian Arab Army post with their anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) near the key mountaintop town of Kabbani in northeastern Latakia.

The jihadist rebels were able to score a direct hit on the Syrian Arab Army’s positions in this mountainous region near the Idlib provincial border.

Aleppo: Al Nusra attacks southwest town, Kurds prepare to fight Turks in northeast

Heavy clashes breakout between jihadist rebels and residents of southwest Aleppo town

[ALMASDARNEWS] Intense festivities broke out between the jihadist rebels of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
and residents of a southwest Aleppo town, opposition activists reported today.

According to the opposition activists, the festivities broke out after Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham fighters surrounded the town of Kafr Halab and began arresting residents suspected of seeking reconciliation with the government.

However,
denial ain't just a river in Egypt...
as Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham fighters began arresting people, the residents decided to fight back, leading to a series of fierce festivities.

Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham did not expect this kind of resistance from the residents, who then began protesting against the jihadist group’s presence in Kafr Halab.

Kurdish forces prepare for major showdown with Turkish troops in northeast Aleppo

[ALMASDARNEWS] The Kurdish-led People’s Protection Units (YPG) are preparing for a major showdown with the Ottoman Turkish military in the northeastern countryside of the Aleppo Governorate.

According to local activists, the YPG was seen raising trenches and building new fortifications around western Manbij amid reports of a possible military operation by the Ottoman Turkish Army.

Furthermore, the YPG brought in reinforcements in order to strengthen their forces around Manbij.

The Ottoman Turkish regime’s recent comments about the presence of Kurdish fighters inside Manbij has raised a lot of red flags for the YPG, as it appears Ankara is preparing to launch a new operation to expel the group from the city.

While the U.S. currently has a military presence in Manbij, it appears The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund....
is not willing to budge; they are demanding the complete withdrawal of the YPG or else they will attack.

Al Sweida: Syrian Army advances 200 meters vs. ISIS, ISIS demands absurdities for 27 Druze hostages including end of campaign

Syrian Army advances more than 200 meters deep into ISIS-occupied region

[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) resumed their field operations inside the al-Safa region of al-Sweida this week in a bid to finally liberate this Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) stronghold.

Backed by Russian Arclight airstrikes, the Syrian Arab Army’s 3rd Corps began their assault by liberating the ’Ard Qa’a Banat area in the northwestern part of the al-Safa region.

Following the liberation of this area, the Syrian Arab Army launched another big attack this morning that concentrated on the western axis of the al-Safa region.

According to a military source in Damascus, the Syrian Arab Army managed to advance more than 200 meters deep into the ISIS-occupied al-Safa.

The source said the Syrian Arab Army is now only a few hundred meters away from having fire control over all the hills in the al-Safa region.

Syria families demand regime action to free ISIS hostages

[Rudaw] The families of Druze hostages held by the Islamic State group rallied for a third day on Friday to demand action by the Syrian government to free them, witnesses said.

The jihadists kidnapped around 30 people -- mostly women and kiddies -- from the southwestern province of Sweida in late July during the deadliest attack on Syria's Druze community of the seven-year civil war.

On Friday, a handful of people gathered for a sit-in at the government's provincial headquarters in Sweida, a news hound in the city told AFP.

The protests began on Wednesday, a day after families learned that ISIS had executed a 25-year-old female captive, Nour Radwan, the head of news website Sweida24, told AFP.

They began protesting to "demand that the government intervene immediately to free the hostages," he said.

A protester, who asked to remain anonymous, said he was not related to the Druze hostages but had joined the sit-in to show support.

"Those who are related to them are always here, and there are large numbers that come in solidarity," he told AFP, though adding that the numbers were lower on Friday.

"We're demanding the return of the hostages. That's not a tall order," he said.

Negotiations between the government's Russian ally and the jihadists for the release of the Druze captives had stalled, but Radwan said they resumed on the first day of the sit-in.

Footage of the protest on Thursday published online by Sweida24 showed a few dozen men and women in front of the provincial headquarters.

They gathered on the building's front steps around neatly lined up photographs of the missing, and a sign that said: "We demand the hostages be returned alive."

- ISIS demands $1 mn ransoms -
Government forces have battled ISIS in the volcanic plateau of Tulul al-Safa in the east of the province since the July attack.

Radwan said the jihadists had demanded $1 million in ransom for each of the 27 hostages, as well as an end to the government's offensive against them in Tulul al-Safa and the release of 48 wives of ISIS fighters from government custody.

In the July 25 attack, ISIS killed more than 250 people, most of them civilians, in a wave of suicide kabooms, shootings and stabbings across Sweida province.

They kidnapped around 30 people -- mostly women and kiddies -- at the same time.

In August, ISIS executed a 19-year-old male student among the captives.

A 65-year-old Syrian woman among the hostages also died, with her ISIS captors telling negotiators she had died of an illness.

Kurdish forces refuse to leave Manbij, prepare to defend town
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) did not withdraw from the northern Syrian town of Manbij, as was ordered by The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...Qatar's colony in Asia Minor....
and the United States, and are preparing to defend the town, the Anadolu news agency reported on Friday.

The YPG militia dug about 30 kilometers (19 miles) of anti-tank trench lines around the town’s center and built escape tunnels, the Ottoman Turkish media reported citing sources.

Ottoman Turkish presidential front man Ibrahim Kalin said earlier this week that the United States was delaying the YPG withdrawal from Manbij, thereby failing to implement Washington’s joint plan with Ankara.

In early June, Turkey and the United States adopted a roadmap that provided for the withdrawal of the US-backed YPG, which is regarded by Ankara as an affiliate of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), from Manbij. The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization in Turkey, the United States and the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
Meanwhile,
...back at the barn, Bossy had come up with a new idea, one that didn't involve kerosene...
the Syrian authorities have condemned the presence of Ottoman Turkish and US forces around Manbij.

Unpunctual Baghdadi barely survives Iranian attack by showing up late to meeting
[ALMASDARNEWS] Sometimes it pays to be late, which is especially the case for the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...the head of ISIS, or what remains of it, and a veteran of the Abu Graib jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us. So far he has been killed at least four times, though not yet by a stake through the heart...
, as he allegedly escaped the Iranian attack on eastern Syria.

According to a report from Iraqi News, the Islamic State leader barely survived the Iranian attack this week after showing up late to the terrorist group’s meeting near the strategic city of Albukamal.

Citing a Baghdad Today interview with Hashd al-Sha’abi leader Jabar al-Ma’amouri, the report claimed "the Iranian shelling against specific pockets of Islamic State, east of Euphrates in Syria, using missiles few days ago targeted an important meeting for the so-called Islamic State’s war council, to which Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was on way."

The terrorist leader "was about to get killed in the shelling but he survived as he was late few minutes for the meeting."

They would add that ’Ali al-Mashadani, Baghdadi’s deputy, was killed during the attack; he was reportedly in line to be his successor.
Love the tone of the above, missing from the original Iraqi News report. Iraqi News does add:
According to Maamouri, "Ali al-Mashadani, Baghdadi’s deputy, who was killed in the shelling. He was nominated to be the coming caliph."

Several Islamic State leaders were killed by the strikes, he added.

#6  American intelligence, despite vastly greater resources, can't.

We’ve just missed him a number of times, too, Herb. And given how ISIS had exploded outward, conquering in all directions until President Trump changed our rules of engagement, with the result that ISIS in Iraq is reduced to small remnants hiding in the desert and in smaller cells hiding in reconquered areas, it looks an awful lot like we are not on ISIS’ side.

As for the stupidities Mr. Obama engaged in when he was in the White House, it seems unfair to blame President Trump for those. Mr. Trump has disengaged from a number of groups, others have openly deserted to either Al Nusra or ISIS or merged with other third parties in Toad The Wet Sprocket fashion, such that parsing the extremely long list of parties involved in the various factions is well beyond my capabilities. Wikipedia’s page on the armed groups of the Syrian civil war is exceedingly long, extensively footnoted, and appears to have been updated as recently as September 2018. Link.

For those interested, the Wikipedia list of armed groups in Iraq is considerably shorter, but still — to me, at least —startling. Link.

Syrian Army foils rebel infiltration attempt from Idlib buffer zone
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Salafist tough guys of Jaish al-Izza attempted to infiltrate the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) positions from the Idlib buffer zone this evening.

According to a military report, Jaish al-Izza attempted to sneak past the Syrian Arab Army’s front-lines south of the towns of Lahaya and Markabah near the Idlib provincial border.

However,
there is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened...
the Salafist tough guys were spotted by Syrian Army scouts before they could reach their intended area in the northern countryside of the Hama Governorate.

The Syrian Arab Army quickly opened fire on the rebel fighters, forcing them to retreat back towards the town of Lahaya.

A source from the Syrian Arab Army’s 4th Division told al-Masdar that the Salafist tough guys were attempting to bypass their lines in order to place mines and IEDs along the roads used by the military.

The source did not say whether or not there were any casualties from either side.
