Africa Subsaharan
15 Suspected Jihadists Killed in Joint French-Niger Op
[AnNahar] Some 15 suspected jihadists have been killed near the Niger-Mali border by a joint Franco-Nigerien task force, the French military high command said.

"On the night of December 27 (...) an air raid mounted by fighters and Tiger attack helicopters struck" jihadists gathered near Tongo Tongo, in southwestern Niger, the high command said in a tweet overnight Saturday to Sunday.

Tongo Tongo was the site of an ambush on October 4, 2017 where jihadists killed five Nigerien and four U.S. special forces' soldiers.

Nigerien and French soldiers, backed by helicopters, took control of several key positions in the area before mounting a 48-hour sweep.

Overall, about 15 jihadists were "put out of action", a term generally used by the military to say they were killed.

During the sweep, "some 20 cycle of violences were recovered, along with 26 weapons, including machine guns, and ammunition, the high command said.

French Defence Minister Florence Parly praised the operation in a tweet as "an example of a successful joint operation in western Niger."

"The strengthening of the G5 Sahel armies is continuing," she added, referring to the regional force consisting of troops from Niger, Mali, Chad, Burkina Faso

and Mauritania which has been set up to fight jihadists.

La Belle France, the former colonial ruler, has deployed a 4,500-member 'Barkhane' force in the region to conduct counter-terrorism operations.

Arabia
Houthis begin withdrawal from Hodeida port
[DAWN] Yemeni rebels have begun to withdraw from the port of Hodeida, the country’s key aid lifeline, under an agreement reached in Sweden earlier this month, a UN official said on Saturday.

The official said the Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
rebels began to pull back from the Red Sea port at midnight on Friday.

The rebel withdrawal from the port, which is the point of entry for food aid to some 14 million Yemenis UN agencies say are on the brink of famine, is a key part of a ceasefire that went into effect on Dec 18.

Pro-government forces are also supposed to pull back from parts of the city they recaptured in an offensive they launched with the backing of a Saudi-led coalition on June 13.

The Houthis began "the first phase of redeployment from the Hodeida port", a rebel official told the Houthi-run Saba news agency. The rebels held a ceremony to mark the occasion, a correspondent reported.

The UN Security Council last week unanimously approved a resolution authorising the deployment of observers to oversee a hard-won truce for Hodeida that was agreed by the Saudi-backed government and the rebels in Sweden this month.

Retired Dutch general Patrick Cammaert is heading a joint truce monitoring committee, which includes both government and rebel representatives, and chaired its first meeting this week.

The UN-led panel addressed "the first phase of the implementation of the agreement ... based on ceasefire, confidence building measures to deliver humanitarian assistance and redeployment", a UN statement said.

It added that the panel would convene again on Jan 1 to discuss "detailed plans for full redeployment".

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel jails Palestinian for Briton's killing, says is mentally ill
JERUSALEM (Reuters) - An Israeli court sentenced a Palestinian to 18 years imprisonment on Monday for stabbing to death a British woman in Jerusalem last year, under a plea bargain acknowledging he is mentally ill.

Jamil Tamimi, 59, killed 21-year-old exchange student Hannah Bladon on a tram as she was going to the church where she volunteered, the court heard. He targeted her at random when she came within his reach after offering her seat to an older woman, stabbing her at least seven times.

"This was not a terrorist incident ... This was a terrible murder carried out by a mentally ill person," the prosecutor said, explaining why a life prison sentence had not been sought, according to a court transcript.

Tamimi’s lawyer said the defendant attacked Bladon in a rage at his sons insisting that he stay in a mental institution rather than with them. "This drove him to stab a person to death so that he would be shot dead," the lawyer said.

In the April 14, 2017 incident, Tamimi was overpowered and arrested.

Dozens of Palestinians who carried out similar attacks, many of them as a political act against Israel, have been shot by security forces or armed civilians.

Bladon’s relatives said the sentence was too lenient.

Southeast Asia
2 killed, dozens wounded in bombing near Philippines mall
[NY Post] Two people were killed and dozens wounded in the Philippines on Monday when a bomb believed to be detonated remotely by pro-ISIS militants blew up near a shopping mall, according to reports.

The crude device exploded near the entrance of the South Seas mall in the southern city of Cotabato as people made last-minute preparations for New Year's Eve festivities, army Maj. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana said.

Security forces who swept the mall discovered another suspected bomb and destroyed it, police Chief Inspector Rowell Zafra said.

At least 32 people were wounded by the bomb, which bore a "Daesh-inspired signature," Sobejana said, referring to Islamic State by another name.

Sobejana said he suspected the attack was retaliation for the killing by government forces of seven members of a small militant group that has pledged allegiance to ISIS.

Islamist extremists operate in the south of the largely Christian country and some are known to have links with groups abroad, including al Qaeda and ISIS.

The improvised explosive device used ‐ which was packed with concrete nails and metal fragments ‐ was left under a table lined near the mall's entrance where vendors displayed fireworks for sale, according to the Philippine Star.

#1  Set as today’s headline. Prayers that this is the worst jihadi attack during this holiday season.

CBS NY reports there will be thousands of police on duty in and around Times Square, and:

Past years have seen Times Square protected by officers with long guns, K-9 units, bag searches, and sanitation trucks blocking off access to normally busy New York City streets, and that will be the case again Monday night.

This year’s beefed-up security includes something new — extra eyes in the sky. The NYPD announced it is deploying drones to help guard the event. They will join a network of more than 1,200 cameras trained on the celebration, CBS2’s Dave Carlin reported.

Bombings, gun attacks rock Narathiwat
[Bangkok Post] Three rangers were seriously hurt after assailants hiding along the roadside next to a rubber plantation opened fire in Narathiwat province on Saturday afternoon.

The ambush occurred in Sri Sakhon district when the pickup truck carrying the three rangers arrived at the spot. An unknown number of gunmen opened fire with M16 rifles at the vehicle. Bullets hit cooking gas cylinders in the rear of the truck, causing a fire that engulfed the vehicle.

The three rangers immediately got out of the vehicle and returned fire. After the exchange of gunfire, the attackers fled. Police spokesman Singha Wasanhirankit said the three rangers sustained serious gunshot injuries.

When police and soldiers arrived to inspect the scene, the officers found the pickup truck, loaded with food supplies and the cooking gas cylinders, engulfed in flames. Fire trucks and firemen were called in to put out the fire.

A police investigation found that the rangers had gone to buy food supplies at a market before going to their outpost in Chanae district. On the way to their outpost, they were attacked.

Authorities blamed southern insurgents for the attack.

This attack followed several bombings and shooting on Friday night. Four people were wounded in a series of bomb blasts and a shooting attack at eight locations, including a security outpost, in four districts of Narathiwat province on Friday night.

In the first location, an unknown number of armed men opened fire on
a security outpost in Rangae district. This prompted defense volunteers to return fire. As both sides exchanged fire, another group of assailants cut a roadside tree on a way to the outpost with metal spikes scattered over the road to prevent assistance from entering the area to help those inside. After firing into the outpost for more than 30 minutes, the attackers decided to flee to a nearby forest.

Shortly later, bombs targeting power poles went off at seven locations in Chanae, Sri Sakhon and Tak Bai districts. In Sri Sakhon district, two bombs went off at different locations, injuring four villagers.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syrian Defense Forces (SDF) Capture 979 Daesh Fighters Holding 48 Nationalities
[Middle East Monitor] The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) warned of the possibility that hundreds of Daesh fighters and their families, who were detained in camps in the north of Syria, would escape if the Turkish army decided to continue its military operation in the area.

The SDF also noted that 970 Daesh soldiers, holding 48 different nationalities, are currently in its custody.

"2,622 elements affiliated to Daesh, including 584 women and 1,248 children, are being held in heavily guarded camps in northern Syria by the SDF," it said.

"If the Turkish army carries out its attack on the northern area, we are afraid that we will lose control and that the detainees will return to the terrorist cells they used to belong to or may escape to other countries," he added.

The source, who asked not to be identified, told Germany’s Deutsche Presse‐Agentur (DPA): "We have detained 970 armed Daesh fighters who came from 48 countries, including the US, France, Britain, Belgium, and Chechnya, as well as the Russian Federation. Besides, hundreds of these fighters come from different Arab countries, in addition to others who hold dual nationalities. Nonetheless, we have ten captives who have committed crimes in a number of countries and are pursued internationally."
