Taliban kill 21 Afghan security forces in country’s north
[PRESSTV] The Talibs have killed at least 21 Afghan cops and maimed nearly two dozen others in a number of simultaneous attacks in the country’s north.

Local officials said on Tuesday that the casualties took place when the bandidos murderous Moslems carried out attacks on security outposts in Sayad district of the northern province of Sar-e Pul.

Zabihullah Amani, a front man for the provincial governor, said at least 21 local forces, including police and intelligence, were killed and another 23 maimed in the raids, which he said were aimed at seizing control of several oil wells on the outskirts of the historic provincial capital city of Sar-e Pul.

Amani also said hundreds of bandidos murderous Moslems were still outside Sar-e-Pul
...a city and eponymous province in northern Afghanistan, population about 500,000. Demographically it is majority Tadjik and Uzbek. There are small Pashtun, Arab, and Hazara
communities, of which the Hazaras mostly don't bother anyone...

, warning that the city was at risk of falling to the Taliban

if reinforcements were not sent.

"The enemy is still amassing forces outside the city," he told AFP. "We have deployed all the forces available in the city, but no reinforcements have arrived from outside so far. The people inside the city are very worried. They have attacked the city many times in the past, but this time the threat is more serious."

The Taliban confirmed the attacks on the northern Afghan province, claiming that they had captured three checkpoints and killed or maimed 50 members of the security forces.

Somali Troops Executed Six Militants In Gedo Region
[RADIOSHABELLE] Colonel Guhad Mohamud Moalim Omar known as [Tima-Jilac], one of the Somali security officials in Bardere town said several al-Shabaab

members were executed on Monday.

He added that the city’s military court sentenced 6 murderous Moslems to death and then publicly executed on Monday after SNA commander General Indha Qarshe ordered.

Somali security forces have carried out a series of anti-Al-Shabaab operations in Gedo region over the past few weeks in an attempt to improve the security after a string of attacks.

The execution of the six murderous Moslems came after Al-Shabaab killed two top Somali military commanders in a kaboom outside Somali capital, Mogadishu last month.

Food aid stolen in 'Houthi-controlled areas' as Yemen starves
[France24] Food aid meant for starving Yemenis is being stolen and sold in some areas controlled by the Houthi movement, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) says, and has threatened to suspend some of its shipments unless the theft stops. "There are certain Houthi elements that don’t care about the people. They are literally diverting aid and we are demanding it be stopped because innocent people are the victims here," WFP Executive Director David Beasley said. "At a time when children are dying in Yemen because they haven’t enough food to eat, that is an outrage. This criminal behaviour must stop immediately."

Mexican mayor shot dead on his first day in office
[NY Post] The newly sworn-in mayor of a town in Mexico's southern state of Oaxaca was on his way to his first official meeting at City Hall on Tuesday when he was killed by a group of gunmen, according to reports.

Alejandro Aparicio Santiago ‐ a member of the National Regeneration Movement ‐ had just taken office in Tlaxiaco when he was attacked.

Gov. Alejandro Murat promised a thorough investigation and said a suspect was already in custody. Four other people were wounded in the attack.

María Ascención Torres Cruz, another politician in the party of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, was killed Sunday in the state of Morelos.

The state government announced the death on Twitter, writing, "Que en paz descanse" ‐ Spanish for "Rest in peace," according to NPR.

Holding public office can be very perilous in parts of the country. Between September 2017 and August 2018, 175 politicians were murdered, according to the consulting firm Etellekt.

Obrador, who campaigned on a platform of restoring order, formed a National Guard and has traveled with light security ‐ riding in a Volkswagen with only unarmed citizens providing protection, NPR reported.
Perhaps he should rethink that

Border agents fire tear gas at migrants throwing rocks, trying to cross border, authorities say
The Daily Mail has the usual photos here.
[SD Union Trib] A group of about 150 migrants attempted to breach a San Diego border fence on New Year's Eve, and some began throwing rocks at responding U.S. border agents who deployed pepper spray and tear gas on the crowd, authorities said.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the group was attempting to climb over and under the San Diego border fence. When agents and officers responded, about 45 migrants turned back to Mexico, according to the agency.

Some migrants began throwing rocks over the fence at agents and officers, according to the agency.
"Peaceful"
"Several teenagers, wrapped in heavy jackets, blankets and rubber mats were put over the concertina wire. Border Patrol agents witnessed members of the group attempt to lift toddler sized children up and over the concertina wire and (have) difficulty accomplishing the task in a safe manner," a news release U.S. authorities states.

The news release does not say what time the incident occurred, and a follow-up question was not immediately answered.
"We're busy"
The Customs and Border Protection release said agents and officers deployed smoke, pepper spray and CS gas to address the rock throwers, who they said were assaulting border agents and also risking the safety of migrants who had already made it onto the U.S. side.

The gases caused people to stop throwing rocks and flee, CBP said. The agency apprehended 25 people, including two minors, the release said.

Ukraine's security service prevents eight terrorist attacks in 2018
[UNIAN] Access to over 300 websites used by the Russian Federation in the hybrid war against Ukraine was blocked in 2018.

The SBU, Ukraine's security service, prevented eight terrorist attacks in 2018. Five of them were solved, the SBU said on Facebook on January 2. During the SBU's counterintelligence activities from 2016 to 2018, it prevented 28 terrorist plots in the country.

The recent one was reported in November 2018 when the SBU said it had blocked an arms trafficking channel in Kyiv region. The channel was organized by supporters of the international terrorist organization "Islamic State."

SBU agents established that citizens of Central Asian countries, using fake documents, illegally arrived in Ukraine after deportation from another Asian state over ties with ISIS. The SBU documented the sale of two foreign-made guns and ammunition. One of the members of the gang was detained by Ukrainian law enforcement agencies. He was notified of a suspicion of committing an offense under Part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and was arrested.

Militants attempted to launch an assault on a residential compound of the paramilitary troops when they were confronted at the entry point, the statement added.

The exchange of fire led to the death of four soldiers and four attackers including a bomber.

No group has grabbed credit for the attack, but Baloch separatist groups and Lions of Islam have attacked security forces in the province in the past.

Arab Israeli man charged with incitement to terror
[IsraelTimes] An Arab Israeli man was indicted on Tuesday for incitement and expressing support for the Lebanese terror group Hezbollah.

Ali bin Adbullah Sarhan, a 64-year-old resident of the northern town of Nahf, was a member of a group on the WhatsApp messaging application called "Shabkat al-Ghaliboun" (Network of the Victors), whose users shared pro-Hezbollah content, according to an indictment filed at the Haifa District Court.

In addition to sharing some of the content on his Facebook account, the indictment said Sarhan also sent messages in the WhatsApp group expressing support for Hezbollah and calling for attacks on Israeli soldiers.

Prosecutors allege one such message shared by Sarhan includes photos of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

next to an image of the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, on which was written, "I’m Paleostinian and my commander is Bashar Hafez Assad. Jerusalem is the capital of Paleostine."

Sarhan is being charged with incitement to terror, contact with a foreign agent, and identifying with a terror group.

Prosecutors asked the court to keep Sarhan, tossed in the calaboose

Security raised in Thai south after wave of attacks
[Bangkok Post] Security has been stepped up in Thailand's far south following a wave of violent attacks that happened in the past week. Additional measures have been ordered in the provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat, as well as around strategic locations and tourist hot spots in Songkhla.

National police chief Chakthip Chaijinda visited Narathiwat on Sunday evening following a series of attacks in Narathiwat last week, and instructed his men to intensify their efforts to keep things under control.

Bomb and gun attacks have rocked Narathiwat's Ragnae district in recent days with the latest reported in tambon Ba Ngo on Sunday night. Two roadside electricity poles were damaged when the bomb went off, but there were no reports of injuries.

Security officers suspect the bomb was the work of insurgents behind an explosion at a concrete railway sleeper near Ban Yaba in Rueso district, as well as another bomb attack on roadside power poles at Ban Bo Thong in Rangae on December 28-29.

Also on December 28, a group of insurgents seized a community hospital in Rangae to launch an attack on a nearby civilian defense volunteer base. The assault reportedly lasted for half an hour before the attackers fled. There were no reports of injuries.

After inspecting some of the attack targets including the civilian defense volunteer base, police chief Chakthip's team flew to Phuket to inspect security preparations ahead of the New Year celebrations. The resort island is crowded with tourists as well as VIPs.

Meanwhile, a military source close to the situation in the South said young insurgents are opposed to a meeting between Dulloh Waemanor, identified as head of Barisan Revolusi Nasional's (BRN) armed group, and Gen Udomchai Thammasaroraj, head of the Thai negotiation team.

Malaysia's new facilitator for the peace talks, Abdul Rahim Mohd Noor, has brokered a meeting for the pair, which is believed to have triggered the attacks, according to the source.

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has championed the peace negotiations. He suggested Thailand try offering southerners more autonomy to persuade them to give up their struggle for independence.

Fighting erupts between rival insurgent groups in Syria
[Ynet] Clashes broke out between two powerful bad boy groups in northern Syria on Tuesday, leaving up to seven people dead in the most serious fighting in months in the last major rebel stronghold in the country.

The al-Qaeda-linked Hayat Tahrir al-Sham
‐Arabic for Levant Liberation Committee‐and the The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
-backed Nour el-Din el-Zinki group blamed each other for triggering the fighting in the northern province of Aleppo.

...the Turkic paramilitaries intended to replace with their native jihadi ferocity all the highly trained soldiers Sultan Erdogan I “the much beloved” has jailed in the last few years for not worshipping the ground he walks upon. The Uighurs and so forth who did not join Al Nusra or ISIS seem to have ended up here...
that has clashed with snuffies in the past. Other factions in the NLF have been sending reinforcement to rebel-held parts of Aleppo to back their allies against al-Qaeda-linked button men raising fears that the fighting will escalate.

According to activist collectives in northern Syria, both groups used heavy weapons, including tanks, in the fighting.
A teachable moment found here.
