Afghanistan
Taliban kill 23 in two attacks on Afghan forces
[DAWN] Afghan officials said on Tuesday that two Taliban

attacks targeted Afghan security checkpoints in the country’s west and east, killing at least 23 members of the security forces.

In western Ghor province, Abdul Hai Khateby, the governor’s front man, says 18 coppers and pro-government gunnies were killed and seven were maimed in hours-long gunbattle with bandidos krazed killers near Feroz Koh, the historic provincial capital. No group immediately took responsibility for the attack.

In eastern Pashtun-infested Logar province, Mohammad Naser Ghairat, a provincial councilman, said bandidos krazed killers overran an army checkpoint in the district of Baraki Barak on Monday, killing five soldiers there.

Ghairat said four soldiers were also maimed while the Taliban captured four others. He says the bandidos krazed killers stole a Humvee and ammunition from the checkpoint. The Taliban grabbed credit for the Pashtun-infested Logar attack.

18 Killed as Taliban Strike near Historic Afghan Minaret

[AnNahar] Taliban fighters have stormed several security posts providing protection to Afghanistan's historic minaret of Jam, cutting access to the UNESCO World Heritage Site and killing 18 security forces, officials said Wednesday.

The attack comes less than a week after the revered 12th-century minaret, located in a remote part of the western province of Ghor, was threatened by surging floodwaters.

"The Taliban have captured some checkpoints around the minaret. We had to retreat because more fighting would cause damage to the minaret," Sayed Zia Hussaini, the deputy police chief of Ghor, told AFP.

Abdul Hai Khatebi, the provincial governor front man, said 15 pro-government militias and three coppers had been killed in the attacks, which started Monday.

"The Taliban have shut off telecommunication towers and have cut any access to the area," Fakhruddin Ariapur, the Ghor province director of information and culture, told AFP.

"The cleaning-up work (from the flood) has stopped and we don't know what is happening there."

Dramatic video footage from late last week showed brown torrents crashing up against the base of the brick minaret, which was built in about 1190.

On Monday, the government said it had hired about 300 local workers to channel floodwaters away from the tower. The work appeared to have saved the minaret from imminent danger.

Located in an area largely under Taliban control, the Jam minaret is the world's second tallest made of bricks, reaching a height of 65 meters (213 feet).

"Al-Shabaab leader in Adala district and three al-Shabaab turbans were killed in Gaharey, 40 km from Adale," the ministry of information said on Tuesday evening.

The ministry did not provide the identity of the senior al-Shabaab leader killed.

There was no immediate comment from al-Qaeda allied group al-Shabaab on the latest incident.

Far-Left Extremist Arrested in Connection with Salvini Party Office Bombing
[BREITBART] Police in northern Italia have locked away
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
a far-left murderous Moslem in connection with the bombing of an office belonging to the League party of populist Italian interior minister Matteo Salvini.

The arrest comes after a long and in-depth investigation by the anti-mafia prosecutor’s office of Venice which determined the identity of the suspect who is believed to be close to the far-left anarchist scene, Il Giornale reports.

The suspect has been named in Italian media as Spanish anarchist Juan Antonio Sorroche Fernandez, 42, who had been on the run from Italian authorities since 2017 for previous offences.

The bombing occurred in August last year and saw one bomb exploding just steps away from the office in the city of Treviso near Venice.

Another nearby device, which was later disarmed, was rigged in order to be tripped by police or other emergency services workers responding to the first device. The detonation of the second bomb would likely have resulted in severe injury or death as it was reported to have contained nails and other fragments of metal.

A group, known as the "Santiago Maldonado Cell", took credit for the attack soon after it occurred stating: "Direct action makes us clear as to why and how. For an internationalist, rebellious, anarchist solidarity! For a world without borders or authority!" The group had also taken credit for a previous bombing at a cop shoppe in Rome.

Iraqi president meets Erdogan as Turkey strikes PKK targets
[Rudaw] Iraqi President Barham Salih met with his Ottoman Turkish counterpart Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
in Istanbul on Tuesday as Ottoman Turkish forces launched a fresh offensive against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) inside Iraq’s Kurdistan Region.

The Iraqi president "stressed the need to safeguard Iraqi illusory sovereignty and rejected any unilateral military action beyond Iraq’s borders," according to a statement published by his office on Wednesday morning.

The closed-door meeting was attended by Iraq and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
’s respective foreign ministers, Iraqi’s national security adviser, and Turkey’s intelligence chief.

Turkey launched Operation Claw, a targeted air and ground offensive against the PKK, on Monday.

The aim of the operation is "to destroy the caves and shelters used by the terrorist organization and neutralize murderous Moslems in the Hakurk region," Turkey’s defense ministry said.

Hakurk is in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, close to its borders with Turkey and Iran. It is located just north of Qandil, where the PKK is currently headquartered.

Artillery shelling was followed by Arclight airstrikes, destroying weapons positions, shelters, caves, and ammunition depots used by the PKK. Turkey also launched commando operations.

Nine PKK fighters have been "neutralized" ‐ a term used by the Ottoman Turkish military to connote anyone killed, injured, or captured ‐ according to the National Defense Ministry.

Iraqi and Ottoman Turkish officials have held several rounds of talks in quick succession in recent months as Turkey ratchets up operations against the PKK on the Iraq-Turkey border.

The PKK’s mountain-based operations also tend to pick up during the warmer spring and summer months.

Earlier this month, Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi also visited Erdogan in Ankara. Security also topped the agenda.

In a presser following their May 15 meeting, Abdul-Mahdi rejected the use of Iraqi soil to launch attacks on Turkey.

Ottoman Turkish Foreign Minister Mehmet Cavusoglu visited Erbil and Baghdad a few weeks earlier. Iraq’s Foreign Minister Mohammad al-Hakim issued a statement following his meeting with Cavusoglu "strongly rejecting the use of its land for any military activities against Turkey."

The PKK has fought a decades-long struggle with Turkey for great political and cultural rights for Kurds. Founded in 1978, the group began its armed insurgency in 1984. An estimated 40,000 people have died as a result of the conflict.

Other topics of negotiation between Iraq and Turkey are their shared water resources, trade, and the Kirkuk-Ceyhan oil pipeline.

Turkish jets pound suspected PKK positions in Duhok
[Rudaw] Ottoman Turkish fighter jets bombed suspected Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) positions on Kurazhar Mountain near the town of Shiladze, Duhok province early on Wednesday, a local official confirmed. There are currently no reports of casualties.

"This is the second time Ottoman Turkish planes have bombed Kurazhar Mountain this week," Warshin Salman, a local councilor, told Rudaw.

The sound of jets and kabooms has spread fear and panic among villagers, he said.

"There was shelling and bombing in the past, but this has recently turned into a weekly occurrence. They bomb these places once or twice a week," Salman added.

There are 348 villages in the area surrounding the town of Amedi, Duhok province. Of these, 198 have stood empty for the past 20 years after Ottoman Turkish strikes forced residents to evacuate.

Amedi and its surrounding villages are today home to around 118,000 people.

Iraq condemns 7th Frenchman to death for ISIS membership
[Rudaw] A Baghdad court sentenced a Frenchie to death on Wednesday for joining the Islamic State

group, bringing to seven the number of French jihadists on death row in Iraq.

Yassin Sakkam was among 12 French citizens transferred to Iraqi authorities in January by a US-backed force fighting the jihadist group in neighbouring Syria.

"I admit to having sworn allegiance" to ISIS, he told the court, saying he was paid $70 (62 euros) a month.

Sakkam, who was dressed in a yellow prison uniform and sported a closely cropped goatee, said he regretted his decision to join IS, and asked to be pardoned.

Sakkam, now aged 29, left La Belle France in late 2014 to fight for IS, posting pictures online of himself carrying arms and speaking to multiple media outlets about the group.

He became one of the most notorious jihadists from La Belle France, which has been seeking his arrest since 2016.

Kurdish authorities detained him in Syria in 2017.

His brother Karim carried out a suicide kaboom at the Iraqi-Jordanian border in 2015, according to the French Center for the Analysis of Terrorism.

'INHUMANE TREATMENT'
Also on Wednesday, an Iraqi court sentenced 24-year-old Tunisian Mohammed Berriri to death for joining ISIS, after a hearing lasting less than an hour.

Berriri, also dressed in a yellow prison uniform, admitted to joining IS, saying he thought it was "defending the weak", but said he now regretted doing so.

Sakkam and the six other French citizens handed death sentences in recent days have 30 days to appeal.

The remaining five French suspects face trial in the coming days.

Iraqi courts have dealt with a steady flow of jihadists ‐ with 500 foreign men and women already found guilty of having joined IS. None of those sentenced to death have so far been executed.

on Wednesday 188 children of Turks accused of belonging to the Islamic State group, a capital offence in Iraq, the judiciary said.

The move follows the repatriation to Tajikistan late last month of 84 children of nationals convicted by Iraqi courts of membership of IS or other jihadist groups.

That came after dozens of children were flown to Russia and after La Belle France and Germany repatriated the children of women nationals detained in Iraq.

Three Killed in Ramadan Violence in Restive Thai South
[AnNahar] Two people, including a 14-year-old boy, were killed in a market place bombing in Thailand's Moslem-majority south, a military front man said Tuesday -- an apparent retaliatory attack for the killing of a wanted rebel leader.

Thailand's three southernmost provinces, Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat, have since 2004 been plagued with conflict between ethnic Malay-Moslem rebels and the Buddhist-majority Thai state, which annexed the region around a century ago.

Around 7,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in violence that rarely makes international headlines despite taking place a few hours south of some of Thailand's tourist hotspots.

On Monday afternoon, the forces of Evil detonated a cycle of violence bomb at a crowded market place in Nong Chik, Pattani province, killing two civilians.

"A 14-year-old boy and a 38-year-old woman died," Colonel Thanawee Suwannathat, front man for the southern army, told AFP.

Four military rangers were maimed in the blast.

The bombing appeared to be in "retaliation" for the death of a runaway suspected rebel leader in neighbouring Yala province earlier in the day, who was rubbed out as authorities surrounded his house, Thanawee told AFP.

The 37-year-old suspect, named as Abdulloh Lateh, was "head of operations" in the Yaha district.

The highly secretive rebels, who are pushing for autonomy from Thailand, operate in small village cells, with their big shots based overseas far from the reach of Thai authorities.

The grinding conflict is characterised by tit-for-tat attacks that usually target symbols of the Thai state and its security forces but civilians from both Moslem and Buddhist communities often get caught in the crossfire.

The region usually sees an uptick in violence during the Moslem holy month of Ramadan, which ends next week.

Monday's violence came a day after another kaboom in Songkhla province killed a police officer at a checkpoint, wounding three others.

Video footage of Sunday's attack showed a plume of thick smoke as the blast went off, leaving a police officer's body lying in the middle of the road.

Thailand's junta leader Prayut Chan-O-Cha -- who is expected to return as a civilian prime minister in the coming days -- condemned the latest attacks as "inhuman".

Peace talks have been inconclusive despite an intensification of army operations in the border zone with Malaysia.

21 civilians dead as Syrian planes pound Idlib
[DAWN] At least 21 non-combatants were killed on Tuesday as Syria’s regime intensified its bombardment of the last jihadist stronghold in the country’s northwest, a monitor said.

Nine children were among the 21 killed in government fire on several towns in Idlib province and the countryside of neighbouring Aleppo, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Strikes on a busy street in the village of Kafr Halab, on the western edge of Aleppo province, killed at least nine civilians.

A photographer said the bodies of the victims were torn apart and several stores lining the side of the road were destroyed.

The street was crowded with people out and about before breaking the daytime fast observed by Moslems during Ramazan.

A hospital in the Idlib town of Kafranbel was also hit by artillery shells, said David Swanson, a front man for the UN humanitarian office.

"The facility is reportedly out of service due to severe structural damage," he said.

The hospital’s administrative director Majed al-Akraa confirmed the attack. "The hospital is completely out of service," he said. "It was a strong attack. The generators and even my car caught fire," he said.

It follows two days of intensified regime bombardment on the region that killed a total of 31 civilians on Sunday and Monday, according to the Britannia-based Observatory.
