[FoxNews] Two American citizens were also seriously injured in a head-on collision when a suspect allegedly struck their vehicle
The last defendant involved in a fatal crash that took the lives of nine undocumented immigrants involved in a human smuggling ring near the Texas-Mexico border was recently arrested, authorities said.
Veronica Torres-Mendez, 34, was taken into custody on Nov. 3 at a home in Austin. Authorities allege she participated in a smuggling operation that took the lives of undocumented immigrants on March 15 near the border city of Del Rio.
Torres-Mendez has been charged with conspiracy to transport undocumented noncitizens. Authorities said Sebastian Tovar, 25, of Toledo, Ohio, was driving a Dodge Ram when a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper attempted to stop him.
When Tovar tried fleeing, he crashed into a vehicle in oncoming traffic. Eight people in the truck were killed and another suffered serious injuries. All were non-U.S. citizens, authorities said.
In addition, two American citizens were seriously injured in the head-on collision when Tovar struck their vehicle, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said.
After the incident, a Border Patrol vehicle came into contact with a Ford F-150 stopped in traffic near where the deadly collision occurred.
When Border Patrol agents directed the driver to turn around, the occupants inside the truck fled into nearby brush. Agents eventually found 12 non-U.S. citizens who ran.
After interviews, authorities determined the Dodge and Ford were part of a human smuggling ring that illegally took 20 undocumented immigrants into the U.S.
Those charged in the alleged scheme include Tovar; Torres-Mendez; Nicolas Mondragon-Gonzalez, 33, and Jose Eli Rodriguez, 21, both of Austin; Jennifer Oralia Davis, 40, of San Antonio; Ruben Junior Rodriguez-Jaimes, 19, and Eduardo Rivera Benitez, both residents of Bastrop, Texas; Lauren Michelle Malmquist, 32, of Round Rock, Texas; and Marco Antonio Hernandez, of Paige, Texas.
Tovar, Mondragon, Torres, Davis, Rodriguez-Jaimes, Malmquist, and Benitez are also charged with one count of transporting noncitizens resulting in death, among other charges.
The suspects face sentences ranging from 10 years to life in prison.

[AlAhram] The joint military committee between Egypt and Israel has agreed to increase the number of Egyptian border guards at the Rafah border area with Israel, the Egyptian Armed Forces announced on Monday.
Egypt had already increased its army presence in the area in recent years following increased terrorist attacks in North Sinai that killed hundreds of military and police personnel as well as civilians. Hundreds of bad boyz were potted in the security operations in North Sinai.
Top Israeli military officers spoke with their Egyptian counterparts in a rare public meeting in the Sinai Peninsula on Sunday, the Israel Defense Forces said.
The meeting was held under the auspices of the so-called Agreed Activities Mechanism, a provision of the 1979 Israel-Egypt peace treaty, which required Jerusalem to sign off on any reinforcements that Cairo wanted to deploy to the Sinai through a joint committee made up of senior IDF and Egyptian officers.
"During a meeting of the committee, an agreement was signed to formalize the deployment of guard troops in the area of Rafah to reinforce the Egyptian military’s security control over the area," the IDF said, adding that the decision was approved by Israel’s civilian leadership.

The Swedish diplomat, who took up the post in September, made the comments during a visit to Taez in the war-torn country's southwest.
As he wrapped up talks with Taez's governor and other politicians, the coalition claimed another heavy corpse count among rebels fighting to seize Marib in the north.
As well 115 Houthis killed, 19 rebel vehicles were destroyed in coalition strikes over the past 24 hours in Sirwah, west of Marib city, and al-Jawf to the north, it said in a statement carried by the official Saudi news agency SPA.
Grundberg said, "military operations (are) causing significant casualties, which are exacerbating the humanitarian situation and undermining peace efforts".
"Working for peace in Yemen is an uphill battle," he added while holding out hope of a breakthrough.
"We should never forget that there is always a way to break the cycle of violence. There are always opportunities for peaceful dialogue."
The coalition has since October 11 issued near-daily reports of bombing around Marib, saying it has since killed more than 2,500 hard boys.
Marib, capital of the oil-rich province of the same name, is the internationally recognised government's last bastion in northern Yemen.
The Iran-backed Shia Houthis began a major push to seize the city in February and, after a lull, they renewed their offensive in September.
Grundberg also offered his condolences after a rebel mortar attack last month on Taez, Yemen's third city, left six children dead or critically injured.
"Again, as elsewhere in Yemen, it is the civilians that bear the burden of this conflict," he said.
The coalition intervened in Yemen in 2015 to shore up the government, a year after the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa.

[Rudaw] Hundreds of migrants colonists, including Kurds, have gathered on the Belarus border with Poland, facing a line of Polish border guards through a fence and hoping to make it across the frontier.
Videos of migrants colonists in Belarus making their way by foot towards the Polish border have been circulating on social media since early on Monday. The Polish Ministry of National Defence published a clip that shows hundreds of people sitting in yellow-dried grass near the village of Kuzinca, where the temperature is 7 degrees Celsius.
"More than 12,000 people [soldiers] are on duty at the border," the Polish minister of national defence Mariusz Błaszczak said in a tweet. "We are prepared to defend the Polish border."
Poland’s interior ministry said they prevented an attempt by the migrants colonists to cross the border.
Thousands of migrants colonists have tried to gain entry to European Union ...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing... nations from Belarus this summer. The EU accuses Minsk of pushing migrants colonists to their borders in protest of sanctions imposed in response to a crackdown on dissent.

Poland has declared a state of emergency on their border and the parliament passed a law that grants border guards the power to push migrants colonists back across the border. It’s part of an effort by Belarus’ neighbors to fortify their borders and stop the migration, but could breach Warsaw’s commitments under international law.
Many Kurds from the Kurdistan Region are among the migrants colonists making their way through Belarus in the hopes of reaching Western Europe. A video from the border published on Sunday shows a group of people wearing thick jackets and warm gloves. A woman screams angrily in Kurdish while her child cries, "Mom, please don’t do this to yourself."

A security source said today, Monday, that the security forces thwarted an ISIS attack on the outskirts of al-Azim district, north of Diyala.
The source told Shafaq News Agency; festivities erupted between the security forces and ISIS when eight murderous Moslems attacked security points belonging to the Iraqi army in the "Najana" area.
The Army foiled the attack, and ISIS elements fled.
According to the source; The attack injured a soldier and killed and maimed some of the terrorists.

A security source reported that seven members of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) were killed and injured in a kaboom in the south of Kirkuk.

A few days ago, four button men claiming to be ISIS visited Liheban.
"They entered the house and immediately took the phone. I was very ill at the time," recalled villager Haji Mohammed Hassan. "They tried hard to convince me to go with them, but I said, ’I can't go with you. I feel drained.’ I had a fever and chills."
One of the men spoke Kurdish and the other three were Arabs.
"ISIS button men have attacked us," said farmer Asaad Fayaq. "They have infiltrated the village. They have been patrolling the village and entering some homes."
In the first 10 months of this year, ISIS has carried out 206 attacks, most of them in the disputed areas, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Peshmerga Jabar Yawar told Rudaw last week. In the disputed areas, ISIS has conducted at least 2,412 attacks since 2018. The group was declared territorially defeated in Iraq in December 2017, but remains a serious threat.
Last week, the holy warriors killed two Peshmerga in Pirde (Altun Kupri), Kirkuk. And the group grabbed credit for killing 15 villagers in Diyala province last month.
At a Peshmerga base within an area of Kurdish control, a commander said they don’t have coordination with Iraqi forces to protect the villages. "The Iraqi army is present in this area but no Peshmerga forces are there. The villages under Iraqi army control have been evacuated. We have no coordination with them," said Major Muzafar Fetah.
Patrolling the troubled disputed areas is a "chief concern" of the US-led coalition against ISIS, according to a recent Pentagon report.
Baghdad and Erbil are working to increase their collaboration. Joint coordination centres were set up in the disputed regions early this summer, though both sides recognize these are "not functioning optimally due to a lack of clarity of the roles and responsibilities of the officers assigned to them," the Pentagon stated.
Talks for joint Iraqi-Peshmerga brigades have stalled.
At the foot of Mount Qarachogh, many families are choosing to leave. Just four families remain in the village of Sleiman Pakhshan that was once home to 40 households.
During the night, those who have stayed behind keep close watch over their houses. And in the day, farmers take their guns with them into the fields, just in case they need to defend themselves.
"If the situation continues like that, it will be inevitable that it [the village] will be completely evacuated. Why? If your life is in danger, would you live here?" said villager Sharif Majeed.

Three ISIS hideouts were raided in Anbar’s Rutba desert, Yehia Rasool said in a tweet.
ISIS leader Abu al-Baraa was killed during the operation, he added. No information was given about Baraa’s role within the bad boy group.
ISIS seized control of swaths of land in Iraq in 2014. The group was declared territorially defeated in 2017, but it continues to carry out bombings, hit-and-run attacks, and abductions across several provinces, particularly in remote border areas of Anbar, and provinces disputed between Erbil and Baghdad where turbans have taken shelter in a security vacuum.
On Saturday, Iraqi and Peshmerga forces conducted a joint operation to clear out ISIS remnants in Nineveh province. The Ministry of Peshmerga said the operation ended "successfully."
ISIS attacked the Peshmerga forces on the Erbil-Kirkuk border three times in the past week. The forces repelled two of the attacks but two Kurdish soldiers were killed in one incident.
ISIS also grabbed credit for a bloody attack in Diyala province where it killed at least 15 people and injured a dozen more.
Last month, Iraqi forces arrested top ISIS financier and deputy to former leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
In the latest edition of its weekly propaganda magazine al-Naba, ISIS claimed it carried out 16 attacks in Iraq, killing and injuring 25 people.

[LI] Israeli intelligence agency Mossad foiled an Iranian terrorist plot to attack Israeli citizens and Jews in Africa.
The Israeli media revealed that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) recruited terror operatives in several African countries to target Israeli tourists and businessmen.
"The Mossad has thwarted multiple attacks by Iran against Israeli tourists and businessmen in at least three African countries," the Jerusalem Post reported on Sunday, citing the Israeli TV network Channel 12. "Israeli intelligence officials have estimated that the Islamic Republic will continue to target Israelis and Jews in spots where they believe security is weaker," the newspaper added.
The authorities in African countries arrested five suspects who trained n Lebanon — a country primarily controlled by the Iran-sponsored terrorist militia Hezbollah. The plot was handled by IRGC’s foreign terrorist arm, Al Quds Force.

[JPost] An Iron Dome battery fired a missile on Monday in response to a Hamas drone crossing into the sea from the Gaza Strip, IDF Spokesperson's unit reported early Monday afternoon.
The aircraft was intercepted without red alert sirens being set off in Israel.
The interception appeared to be the second time that the Iron Dome has shot down an enemy unmanned aerial vehicle following upgrades to the air defense system, which was initially designed only to counter short-range rockets.
According to the IDF, the device “was monitored throughout the entire incident” by the air force’s ground control.
The Iron Dome was first used operationally to intercept a Hamas drone in May, during an 11-day conflict with Palestinian terror groups in the Strip, known in Israel as Operation Guardian of the Walls. During the conflict, the system also mistakenly shot down an Israeli drone.
The launching of the drone from Gaza came as Hamas fired a number of rockets out to sea, apparently as part of efforts to test its capabilities. Israel typically does not interfere when Hamas conducts test launches; however, it does generally shoot down any drones that are flown out of the Strip.

The Israeli military struck a number of sites in western Syria in a rare early evening attack on Monday, Syrian state media reported.
According to the Syrian military, the strikes hit targets in the area of Homs in Western Syria and around Tartus, along the Mediterranean coast. One of the targets was located at the Shayrat Airport near Homs.
Syrian state media outlet SANA reported that two Syrian soldiers were maimed in the strikes, which also caused "material losses."
The opposition-linked Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the targets were Iranian-controlled weapons caches.
There was no comment from the Israel Defense Forces, in line with its policy of ambiguity regarding its activities in Syria.
This was the third attack attributed to Israel in the past week and a half, and at least the sixth in the past month, marking a clear uptick in the number of strikes allegedly carried out by the Israeli military. According to the Syrian military, Monday’s attack was conducted at 7:16 p.m., an irregular time for an alleged Israeli strike, which are typically conducted in the early hours of the morning.

With all the precision weaponry that Israel displays, why the daylight bombing? Propaganda? A warning to Lebanon? An effort to hit an important human target? A demonstration that Syrian counters are ineffective? All of the above?

#1 - I would propose that the Hezbies, Iranians, et al became so sure that the IAF only operated at night that they became lax in their daytime security (such as it is). This might just be a wakeup call that the Juice can/will strike 24/7
