Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief: August 29, 2022
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS

  • US-PAKISTAN DRONE COOPERATION? — Defense Minister Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob’s recently accused Pakistan of cooperating with the US by allowing them to use Pakistani airspace to send drones into Afghanistan, further ratcheting up tensions between the two countries. According to a source within the Ministry of Defense who is familiar with the situation, the intelligence regarding Pakistan’s compliance came from either Russia or China. The source stated that prior to these allegations, the Taliban leadership believed that US drones were operating out of Tajikistan or Uzbekistan. Pakistan has yet to respond to the minister’s remarks.

  • NEW PANJSHIR OFFENSIVE— It appears that Mullah Abdul Qayyum Zakir, the Taliban’s new special commander in Panjshir, has launched his first offensive. Two NRF bases were targeted in multi-directional attacks. Early reporting suggests the Taliban suffered the same fate as in previous efforts and were unable to assail the bases.

  • BURNING NON-COMBATANTS’ HOMES — A disturbing new tactic was said to have been employed in both attacks when Taliban fighters began burning homes of non-combatants in nearby villages. Although this rumor is unconfirmed, the tactic supports previous source reporting that Mullah Zakir intends to take the fight to non-combatants who were suspected of supporting Resistance forces in the province.

CONFLICT TRACKER:
Kunar: A roadside bomb targetted a convoy of Taliban fighters passing through the Asad Abad area early Sunday morning. 1 Talib was killed and 3 were wounded, along with 3 civilians. No one has claimed responsibility.

Parwan: 2 Talibs were killed and two wounded by a single gunman. The Taliban claim he is mentally unstable, but witnesses say he was a known member of ISIS-K. Now word if he escaped or was arrested.

Panjshir: The Taliban launched attacks against two NRF positions in Paryan district Sunday morning, with fighting continuing throughout the day. This is the first planned offensive by the new special Talib commander. Local sources claim that the Taliban have set several civilian homes afire during the fighting. No casualties yet reported.

NEXT 24 HOURS
  • UNSC SESSION — The UN Security Council will host a closed-door session on Monday in order to hear a new report from Martin Griffiths, the United Nation’s Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, regarding the humanitarian and economic situation in Afghanistan.

  • WARNING TO PANJSHIR CIVILIANS — As Taliban offensives in Panjshir continue, non-combatants that may be suspected of sympathizing with Resistance forces due to true sympathies, a Tajik ethnic background, past associations with the government, etc. should seek safety outside of their homes if fighting is ongoing nearby.

Taliban Member Killed in Roadside Mine Explosion in Northeastern Afghanistan
[KhaamaPress] A roadside mine explosion in the northeastern Afghan province of Kunar, in the lovely provincial capital, Asadabad, killed a Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
member and maimed six more, said local Taliban authorities.

The Taliban Chief of Police in Kunar province
... which is right down the road from Chitral. Kunar is Haqqani country.....
, Mawlawi Abdul Haq Haqqani, said that a ranger vehicle carrying the group’s forces was targeted in a kaboom today, Sunday, the 28th of August, in Asadabad bazaar in Kunar’s central district.

Three people have been arrested in connection with the mine explosion that occurred at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, according to a Taliban official.

The roadside mine explosion on Sunday in Kunar, the latest to target the Taliban since the Taliban took power, elicited no immediate claims of responsibility.

Earlier, a Taliban vehicle hit a roadside mine in Panjshir province, in northern Afghanistan last week.

The roadside mine explosion in Panjshir province’s Rukha district took place on August 22, which led to the destruction of the Taliban ranger vehicle.

The Taliban reportedly arrested several people who were present at the blast scene on suspicion of involvement.

The current instances not only demonstrate that the Taliban’s claims that they have brought and maintained security are demonstrably untrue but also showcase that the group itself is not safe as it loses members to fatal attacks and explosions.

Clashes in Libya leave 32 people dead
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] At least 32 civilians have been killed and scores of others injured in intense fighting that erupted between rival factions in the Libyan capital overnight, the country’s health ministry said.

The Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
-based Government of National Unity (GNU) and a rival administration backed by the eastern-based parliament traded accusations over the violence.

The GNU said in a statement that the festivities in Tripoli were triggered by fighters aligned with a rival administration under Fathi Bashagha, firing on a convoy in the capital while other pro-Bashagha units had massed outside the city. It accused Bashagha of backing out of talks to resolve the crisis.

The Bashagha administration said in response that it had never rejected talks and that its own overtures had been rejected by interim Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah. It did not directly respond to the assertion that it was linked to the festivities.

Tripoli University announced the suspension of classes and exams as a result of the festivities until further notice.

The Ministry of Education also announced the suspension of secondary school exams throughout Libya until the situation in the country stabilizes.

In a related context, airlines including al-Jannah and African Airlines confirmed the suspension of their flights from Mitiga international airport, until the situation in Tripoli stabilizes.

The Tripoli festivities have met with local and international reactions denouncing and calling for an end to the fighting and work to hold elections as soon as possible.

Iraq
Iraq Presidential Palace Stormed, US Embassy Helicopter Evacuation
From al-Shafaq

[PJMedia] The Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, headed an emergency meeting with senior security commanders to discuss the ongoing tension inside Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone.

According to a readout issued by his bureau, al-Kadhimi urged the demonstrators to immediately evacuate the Green Zone to avoid hampering the social peace.

The Prime Minister instructed the security forces to pursue utmost caution when dealing with the protestors and protect public and private properties.

Earlier today, Moqtada al-Sadr said he was quitting politics and closing his institutions in response to an intractable political deadlock, sparking protests by his followers and raising fears of more instability.

Al-Sadr's supporters, who have been staging a weeks-long sit-in in Baghdad's fortified Green Zone, a sprawling area of ministries and foreign missions, stormed the main cabinet headquarters and demonstrated inside after his announcement.

Iraq's Joint Operations Command (JOC) declared a curfew from 3:30 p.m. (Iraq time) and urged the protesters to leave the Green Zone to avoid festivities.

During the stalemate over forming a new government, al-Sadr has galvanised his legions of backers, throwing into disarray Iraq's effort to recover from decades of conflict and sanctions and its bid to tackle sectarian strife and rampant corruption.

Al-Sadr was the biggest winner from an October election but withdrew all his politicians from parliament in June after he failed to form a government that excluded his rivals, mostly Iran-backed Shiite parties.

Al-Sadr has insisted on early elections and the dissolution of parliament. He says no politician who has been in power since the U.S. invasion in 2003 can hold office.

"I hereby announce my final withdrawal," al-Sadr said in a statement posted on Twitter, criticising fellow Shiite politicians for failing to heed his calls for reform.

He did not elaborate on the closure of his offices, but said that cultural and religious institutions would remain open.

Al-Sadr has withdrawn from politics or government in the past and also disbanded militias loyal to him. But he retains widespread influence over state institutions and controls a paramilitary group with thousands of members.

He has often returned to political activity after similar announcements, although the current political deadlock in Iraq appears harder to resolve than previous periods of dysfunction.

The current impasse between al-Sadr and Shiite rivals in the Coordination Framework has given Iraq its longest run without a government.

Supporters of the mercurial holy man then stormed Baghdad's central government zone. Since then, they have occupied parliament, halting the process to choose a new president and prime minister.

Reports Of US Embassy Being Evacuated As Baghdad's Green Zone Breached
[ZeroHedge] Days of pro-Muqtada Sadr protests and unrest have reportedly resulted in Baghdad's high secure Green Zone being breached Monday, placing international diplomatic missions and foreign embassies under threat.

AFP is reporting that an exchange of gunfire has been observed as dozens or possibly hundreds of supporters riot, with police using riot control measures like water cannons to repel an attack on the Green Zone. There are unconfirmed reports that the sprawling and iconic Iraqi Republican Palace has been forcibly breached with protesters inside.

The Security Media Call revealed on Sunday that four ISIS bad boyz were potted in Nineveh.

killing one civilian and injuring another, an official confirmed the incident to Rudaw.

The attack in Kirkuk’s Laylan district resulted in the death of one shepherd, who was also a Peshmerga fighter, and another civilian, the area’s head Salam Bawa told Rudaw’s Hastiar Qadir.

At least one ISIS member was also killed, he added.

Bawa said Laylan district falls in the disputed territories between Erbil and Baghdad.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
IDF, police bust gun-runners on Jordan border amid rise in smuggling efforts
[IsraelTimes] Security forces detain suspected leader of operation following attempt to bring 10 pistols over border last weekend; military says some 300 guns seized so far this year

Israeli security forces busted a gun-smuggling network along the Jordanian border last weekend, arresting its leader and several members and seizing 10 handguns, law enforcement officials said Sunday.

According to the Israel Defense Forces, the arrests came amid a "significant rise" in attempts to smuggle weapons and drugs into the country from Jordan and Egypt. Since the beginning of the year, some 300 guns and 2,150 kilograms of various drugs have been seized along the Jordanian and Egyptian borders, the IDF said.

On August 21, soldiers operating surveillance cameras identified a suspect nearing the border from Jordan, close to the northern town of Neve Ur.

Police said the suspect then handed a bag with 10 handguns to the network’s courier along the border. Soldiers and officers dispatched to the scene arrested the courier and seized the weapons.

The network’s leader and another member tasked with securing the smuggling were arrested nearby as they attempted to flee the scene, police said.

The trio, all in their 30s from southern Bedouin towns near Arad, have remained under arrest since. Police prosecutors are expected to file indictments against them in the coming days.

In a separate smuggling attempt on Sunday morning, the IDF said troops and coppers arrested one suspect along the Jordanian border and seized two handguns he had in his possession.

Law enforcement officials have indicated guns smuggled in from Jordan are often sold to Arab Israelis and West Bank Paleostinians, for both criminal and terrorist purposes.

The military and police have stepped up efforts to halt smuggling attempts along the Jordanian border in recent months.

The IDF said last weekend’s incident was the 18th smuggling attempt it had thwarted this year, with more than 300 weapons seized. In 2020 and 2021 combined, 300 firearms were seized along the eastern frontier, the IDF said.

Separately, the IDF said it had foiled over 40 attempts to smuggle drugs, mostly hashish and marijuana, from Egypt. The 2,150 kilograms of illicit substances seized were valued at NIS 135 million ($41.5 million).

Unlike Israel’s other frontiers — with Egypt, Lebanon Hezbollahstan
...The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers, a practice dating back to the heady days of human sacrifice to Baal Moloch...
and Syria — its border with Jordan is largely open, often without significant fencing, and is relatively unguarded, making it an easy channel for large-scale smuggling.

The IDF said Sunday that it had beefed up defenses on the Jordanian border, as well as increased its surveillance efforts and improved its means of transportation, in order to better foil smuggling attempts.

In the last year, the IDF, police, and Shin Bet security agency have established joint operation rooms enabling them to "produce accurate intelligence in real time and formulate a united and joint operative response to the challenges and smuggling attempts," the military said.

Chief Superintendent Ronen Kalfon, commander of the police anti-smuggling Magen unit, said, "This is an ongoing challenge and we will continue to attack the smuggling networks wherever and whenever they go."

Authorities have increasingly sought to crack down on the unmitigated spread of illegal weapons in the Arab Israeli community, which have been used to carry out a record-breaking number of murders in recent years.

According to the Abraham Initiatives, a group lobbying against violence in the Arab community, last year 125 Arabs were killed in Israel in community violence — an all-time record. Since the beginning of 2022, another 72 have been killed in incidents of violence.

In another incident Sunday, Defense Ministry security guards foiled an attempt to smuggle some 9,000 5.56mm rounds and weapon parts into the West Bank at the Netiv HaLamed-Heh crossing. One suspect was arrested, the ministry said.

IDF says shots fired at two military posts in West Bank, with no injuries
[IsraelTimes] Military launches hunt for button men, amid uptick in attacks

Shots were fired Sunday night at two Israel Defense Forces positions near the northern West Bank city of Nablus and the Paleostinian town of Silwad, the military said.

No soldiers were hurt in the two incidents, which occurred near the settlement of Yitzhar, near Nablus, and Ofra, near Silwad in the central West Bank.

The two attacks were reported to have occurred within a short timeframe.

The military said troops returned fire in both cases, and launched a manhunt for the button men.

In footage published by Paleostinian media outlets, heavy gunfire can be heard in the Silwad area.

The incidents followed an uptick in shooting attacks in the areas in recent weeks.

In raids across the West Bank early Sunday, four wanted Paleostinians were arrested, the IDF said.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Terror technique: Civilians in NE Syria lose their lives in repeated Turkish shelling
[NPASyria] Badoura Ali, 50, sits in front of her house, staring at the direction to which her husband went out two weeks ago, and never came back.

As she was about to cry, she wondered about the reason behind Ottoman Turkish attacks that target civilians in their own lands.

On August 10, a Ottoman Turkish drone targeted a car near the village of Malla Sibat, southwest of the city of Qamishli, northeastern Syria, killing three people, including Ali’s husband, Adeeb Suleiman, 62.

Qamishli, like other cities on Syrian-Ottoman Turkish border, witnessed repeated Ottoman Turkish bombardment by drones and artillery shells, killing and injuring civilians.

Two months ago, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
’s President His Enormity, Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
...Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey. In Anatolia did Recep Bey a stately Presidential Palace decree, that has 1100 rooms. That's 968 more than there are in the White House, 400 more than in Versailles, and 325 more than Buckingham Palace, so you know who's really most important...
announced plans to carry out another major military cross-border incursion into northern Syria. Erdogan specified his targets in the two northern Syrian cities of Manbij and Tel Rifaat.

Since Tehran summit that took place on July 19 and brought together presidents of each of Iran, Russia and Turkey, Turkey has been escalating shelling of northeastern Syria, ignoring ceasefire agreements.

Eyewitnesses assured that the shelling of locations often happens twice in a row, separated by minutes, killing and injuring people while they gather to rescue the victims of the first targeting.

While trying to pull herself together, the grieving wife told details, saying, "It was 5:00 pm when I heard a kaboom."

"Turkey shelled us, it targeted a car," she added.

Ali said that her husband rushed to help injured people, and although she asked him to return, but he refused.

While her husband, Suleiman, was trying to help injured people and get them out of the car, the Ottoman Turkish drone hit again, killing him immediately, according to his family members and eyewitnesses nearby the scene.

It seems to be hard for Ali to accept the idea of losing her husband, as she said, "He used to work in field and take care of livestock, and his work was enough for us to live. However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...
he is dead now and nothing remains except memories."

On August 6, a Ottoman Turkish drone bombed a car in al-Sinaa neighborhood (industrial zone) in Qamishli, resulting in the death of four people, including two children Ahmad Shibi, 14, and Aheng Shibi, 16.

Masoud Adeeb, 20, Suleiman’s son, warned people of gathering in shelling locations, especially after minutes of shelling, as he said, "When shelling happens, civilians should not gather in the shelling location to avoid what happened to my father."

On August 16, Media center of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said that four fighters of Self-Defense Forces (compulsory recruitment), affiliated with the SDF, bit the dust in a Ottoman Turkish drone attack on the countryside of Amuda, a city in the western countryside of Qamishli.

Ali Hassan, 50, who witnessed that bombing as he was on his way home, told North Press, "I heard a kaboom in the village and when we went to check on, the drone shelled again."

He wondered, "For what crime were those children killed? Why is the world silence regarding these massacres?"

Media Ali, 45, from the village of Sanjak Saadoun, where the abovementioned shelling took place, also said that she witnessed the Ottoman Turkish dronezaps on the same location in the village twice in a row.

Ali called for the UN and human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
organizations to stop the "Ottoman Turkish aggression."

In a separate incident, the Ottoman Turkish artillery shelled a post in the village of Segirka, behind COVID-19 hospital northern Qamishli, killing four people.

Ismael Farho, 62, a worker at a gas station nearby the location of the shelling in Segirka, said, "After a shell fell, we rushed there to transport injured people and deaders. While we were moving away from the place, another shell fell."
