#1  Vera Voronina, born in Odessa 1904, was a Russian model, dancer and actress. Her family left their homeland for Austria when the Russian revolution spread across the country. In 1925 Vera Voronina headed for the exuberant Berlin in the Weimar republic. She supported herself as a model and chorus girl. Her beauty eventually caught the eye of a Swedish film unit shooting in Berlin, who cast her in one of their productions, "Hon, den enda/She, The Only One" (1926) directed by Gustaf Molander. In 1927 Paramount Picture signed her to a contract and brought her to Hollywood. She lived at 1954 North Argyle Avenue with her husband Nikolaus Awramow, a lawyer from Kyiv. At that time, the studio already had German director Ernst Lubitsch and film star Emil Jannings under contract. Hoping to bolster its foreign talent pool, Paramount groomed Vera Voronina for stardom by promoting her as an exotic Russian exile. But the timing was bad. The talking pictures became increasingly popular, and Vera didn't speak English at all. In the summer of 1928, the Voronina-Awramow couple returned to Europe and Berlin, where she appeared in four feature films before fading into obscurity in 1929. Vera Voronina believed to have died in 1942, 38 years old, location and cause unknown.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Eight migrants found dead at Texas border, 53 apprehended trying to cross Rio Grande
[FoxNews] Two of the dead migrants were found by Mexican authorities and many of the migrants found alive were rescued as they were trying to cross the Rio Grande into the U.S., authorities said

The bodies of eight migrants were found Thursday, and 53 were apprehended trying to cross the border between Mexico and the United States, including 37 who were rescued while trying to cross the Rio Grande into Texas, authorities said.

Agents with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Del Rio Sector responded to a large group of people near Eagle Pass, Texas, where they apprehended the migrants.

Thirty-seven of them were rescued as they tried to cross the river into the United States. During the rescue mission, authorities found eight dead migrants, CBP said.

Two were found by Mexican authorities and another six by American agents. Authorities have partnered with the Eagle Pass Fire Department and Maverick County Sheriff’s Office to search for other victims.

Across the river, Mexican authorities took into custody another 39 people.

The incident comes as migrants continue to approach the border in a dangerous fashion. In June, 53 migrants were found dead inside a tractor-trailer in San Antonio, highlighting the dangerous conditions many face as they try to cross the border illegally.

The dead included a 13-year-old and 14-year-old from Guatemala and two 16-year-olds from Mexico.

U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, whose district includes much of the border area, criticized President Biden over his failure to visit the border since taking office in 2021.

"53 DEAD in a truck, 53 in a river, countless dead in ditches, gullies and desert throughout #TX23….how many more must die before Biden visits the border?" he tweeted.

As a form of protest, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has ordered the busing of migrants to Washington, D.C., New York City and Chicago in an effort to highlight how overwhelmed Texas border communities have become.

As of Friday, more than 7,600 migrants have been transported to the three cities.

Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief September 3, 2022
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • NEW US REFUGEE POLICY RESPONSE — The US government’s shift in Afghan resettlement priorities has caused significant consternation among at-risk Afghans and their sponsoring organizations who had applied for Humanitarian Parole cases. Lawmakers in Washington, DC are questioning the new priorities and are criticizing the administration for closing the door on Humanitarian Parolees. However, it remains unlikely that the policy will be reversed.

  • 18 KILLED IN MOSQUE BLAST — A suicide bomber detonated a device at Guzargah Mosque in Herat during Friday prayers, According to local officials, 18 were killed and 21 more were injured. Among the dead was prominent pro-Taliban cleric Mawlawi Mujib Rahman Ansari. No group has claimed the attack yet.

A massive security presence has been reported in Herat following the horrific suicide attack. Clearly, the Taliban’s anti-terrorist operation in the city did not succeed in neutralizing the ISIS-K threat, despite their recent success in neutralizing 3 purported ISIS-K members. Residents should expect a protracted investigation that will likely involve house-to-house searches and restrictions on pedestrian and vehicular travel.

  • CALM AT BORDER — No further reports of violence have been received on the Pakistan—Afghanistan border. The lack of fighting has soothed fears of a potential escalation of the conflict.

  • EVICTIONS IN PANJSHIR — Evictions continue to be reported in select villages in Panjshir after a deadline came and went for locals to identify NRF collaborators. At least twelve families are known to have been forcibly removed from their homes by the Taliban with the number expected to climb over the weekend.

CONFLICT TRACKER
Takhar: A drone strike was reported Friday in Khwaja Bahauddin district near the villages of Katakjar and Kohna Shakh. Multiple outlets on social media have videos and photos of the purported event. It is not known who was controlling the drones.
Kabul: Unconfirmed reports of several explosions in the Karte Chahar area of Kabul late Friday, characterized by local eyewitnesses as rocket strikes. Unknown number of casualties and no claim of responsibility.

NEXT 24 HOURS
Residents in Herat and Kabul should expect police and intelligence searches in select areas of the cities as a result of terror-related attacks.

Blast outside mosque in the city of Herat in western Afghanistan has killed at least 18 people

A blast outside a mosque in the city of Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
in western Afghanistan on Friday killed at least 18 people including a high-profile pro-Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
holy man in what authorities said was an attack.

"18 have been killed and 23 have been injured," front man for the interior ministry Abdul Nafi Takor told Rooters.

Herat’s police front man Mahmood Rasoli said that Mujib Rahman Ansari - the pro-Taliban holy man - was among the dead along with some of his guards and civilians as they approached the mosque for Friday prayers.

Al Jazeera Media Network, citing unnamed sources, said 28 people had been killed and 45 injured.

The Taliban’s spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid, in a tweet expressed "strong condolences" over Ansari’s death and said his attackers would be punished.

Mujib Rahman Ansari had spoken strongly in defense of the Taliban at a large gathering of thousands of scholars and elders organized by the group in late June, condemning anyone who stood against their administration.

The Taliban say they have improved security in the country since taking power around a year ago, but there have been several blasts in recent months, some of them targeting busy mosques during prayers.

The United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
has raised concerns about the growing number of attacks and some blasts have been claimed by a local branch of ISIS.

The was no immediate claim of responsibility for Friday’s explosion.
Khaama Press has a photo of the formerly living cleric, adding:
Earlier on Friday, at around 12:40, during the Friday congregational prayer, a deadly explosion occurred in the Guzargah mosque in the province of Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
, leaving at least 20 people dead, according to local sources.

The explosion occurred inside the mosque where Mawlawi Ansari was leading Friday prayers, according to a Taliban spokesman, who also said that those responsible for the deadly act will be held responsible and punished.
Tolo News has video of Mawlawi Ansari preaching, and provides some of his history:
Mawlawi Mujeeb Rahman Ansari was an Afghan Islamic holy man famous for his harsh conservative remarks and for attracting criticism from fellow Afghans.

Ansari was born in 1362 (solar year) in Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
and received his education there and later went on to become the imam of Guzargah mosque in Herat.

He was targeted and killed by a suicide kaboom that took place inside the Guzargah mosque during the Friday prayers.

He was one of the famous critics of the former republic government of Afghanistan.

"We were struggling for the freedom of the country, today we are struggling for the reconstruction of the country," Ansari recently told a gathering of people in Herat.

He studied Islamic education at Ansar Darul Uloom in Herat.

Ansari become a public figure after he and his followers prevented a music concert in Herat in 1391 (solar year).

"If anyone makes any small movement against the current government-- I am junior and younger than all of these Ulema (Islamic holy mans)-- if so all of the Ulema, all over Afghanistan should reach out to give the Fatwa (order) to behead those who stand against the Islamic Emirate, and they should be eliminated," he told a gathering of Islamic holy mans in Kabul.

He was also the head of a radio station called "Ansar" in Herat province.
The Afghan Digest indirectly suggests this is the work of ISIS-K.

Tunisian army kills three ISIS-linked extremists
[ALARABIYA] The Tunisian army said Friday it had killed three bandidos gunnies linked to ISIS during an operation in the country’s west.

The men, members of the "Soldiers of the Caliphate" group,
...the local branch of ISIS is also known as Jund al-Khilafa...
were killed during a morning operation in the Mount Salloum area near Kasserine, a town close to the Algerian border, the defense ministry said.

The operation came three weeks after a shootout with suspected turbans in the same area maimed two Tunisian soldiers, according to authorities.

Tunisia saw a string of terrorist attacks that killed dozens of tourists and security forces in the years following its 2011 revolution, but authorities say they have made major progress against such groups.

The last major attack in Tunisia was in 2016 in the town of Ben Guerdane on the border with war-torn Libya, when 13 security personnel, seven civilians and 55 bandidos gunnies were killed.

India-Pakistan
Three terror splinter groups operating in Rajouri-Poonch
[GREATERKASHMIR] Admitting the presence of about three splinter terror groups in the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
, a police brass hat said security forces are making efforts to neutralise them.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, Rajouri-Poonch range, Haseeb Mughal said search and cordon operations in broader areas are taking place on almost daily basis to provide a sense of security among the people and to ensure they continue their normal activities without any fear.

On August 11, two suspected murderous Moslems of Pakistain-based Jaish-e-Mohammed terror outfit launched a pre-dawn suicide kaboom on an Army camp in Rajouri, marking the return of fidayeen' to Jammu and Kashmir after more than three years.

Both the murderous Moslems were rubbed out after an over four-hour gunbattle, while five soldiers were also killed in the incident.

"Police and other (security) agencies have prior information about movement of murderous Moslems who took advantage of the natural camouflage in the shape of wild growth and vegetation, a normal phenomenon during monsoon...After that attack (on August 11), security was further heightened and an alert was sounded in view of the presence of two to three more splinter terrorist groups in the Pir Panjal region," the police officer said during an interaction on social networking site Facebook.

He said the terror groups are on the radar of security agencies and are being regularly followed to neutralise them as soon as possible.

"A contact was established with one such group (within a week of the first attack) but they slipped away taking advantage of inclement weather and darkness coupled with dense forest," Mughal said.

He said the security forces are jointly carrying out cordon and search operations in broader areas on a regular basis to provide a sense of security to the people so that they continue their normal activities like farming without any fear.

"The support structure for murderous Moslems in both Rajouri and Poonch is almost negligible. People helped security forces to bust a number of terror modules in the recent past," Mughal said, appealing to the people to help security forces in maintaining peace in the region.

"Peace is prosperity...Whenever you find any suspicious movement or a suspicious object, immediately report to the concerned cop shoppe, control room or security establishment. We will ensure an immediate response," he said.

The senior police officer asserted that peace is not possible without the support of the people.

"They are stakeholders of peace and we can play our part, but they too have to play their active role," he said, adding police and security forces are always ready to extend their support to the people.

The DIG, also said police have set up an online grievance redressal system for public and police personnel to ensure that their problems are resolved on time.

"The major agenda of the government is to reach out to the people and mitigate their sufferings. We have taken this initiative as part of the agenda," he said, adding while the issues pertaining to police will be addressed by the department, those concerning the civil administration will be forwarded to the departments concerned.

Security forces prevent demonstrators from entering the Green Zone
[SHAFAQ] On Friday, demonstrators in Baghdad tried to storm the heavily-fortified Green Zone.

A security source told Shafaq News Agency that the demonstrators, who gathered earlier at al-Nusour Square, moved towards the Green Zone in an attempt to enter it but the security forces prevent them.

Since the beginning of the demonstration, a source reported to our Agency that the security forces had taken measures including blocking the Square when Tishreen demonstrators start moving in the street.

In the last weeks, the Iraqi capital witnessed many protests when supporters of the Sadrist Movement and Coordination Framework stormed the Green Zone.

The events resulted in dozens of deaths and hundreds of maimed.

On Oct. 1, 2019, Iraqis demonstrated across the country against corruption, one of the largest protests since the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime.

More than 560 people, mostly unarmed demonstrators but also some members of the security forces, have been killed.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Palestinian stabbed an Israeli soldier and was shot by another in the occupied WestBank

A Paleostinian was rubbed out Friday after stabbing an Israeli soldier at an army post near Hebron in the occupied West Bank, the Israeli army and the Paleostinian health ministry said.

"An assailant armed with a knife" approached a military post and stabbed a soldier, the army said in a statement, adding that another soldier opened fire and "neutralized" the assailant.

For all the latest headlines follow our Google News channel online or via the app.

It said the "moderately" maimed soldier was "evacuated to a hospital for medical attention, while fully conscious, and his family has been informed."

The Paleostinian health ministry said it had been informed of the death of a young man near Hebron, but did not immediately identify him.

Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967, when it captured the territory from Jordan.

About 475,000 Jewish settlers currently live in the West Bank in communities considered illegal by most of the international community, alongside some 2.8 million Paleostinians.
Compare to the report from The Times of Israel:
An Israeli soldier was moderately hurt in a stabbing attack near the West Bank city of Hebron Friday afternoon, close to the settlement of Kiryat Arba, the military and medics said. The attacker was rubbed out.

The IDF said the two soldiers were securing the Route 60 highway, which passes near the Paleostinian city, when the assailant attacked them.

Media reports indicated the attacker emerged from a taxi with a plastic bag from which he pulled the knife and stabbed one of the soldiers.

The Paleostinian stabber was shot by the maimed soldier’s comrade. The soldier who shot the assailant later made a statement released to the media.

"The assailant arrived from behind us and stabbed one of the soldiers, I didn’t hesitate and neutralized the assailant. As a medic I gave life-saving medical care to my squad sergeant," said Cpl. Mem of the Givati Infantry Brigade, who could only be identified by the initial of his Hebrew name.

The stabbing victim, in his 20s, was taken to the Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center in Jerusalem after sustaining a moderate injury, according to the Magen David Adom ambulance service.

According to Paleostinian media reports, festivities erupted at the scene following the attack.

The stabber was later named by Paleostinian media as Fadi Muhammed Ghattas from the nearby Dheisha refugee camp.

Southeast Asia
Philippine police hunt for 6 IS-linked militants in officers’ killings
[BenarNews] Six members of a holy warrior group linked to Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
hard boyz were responsible for killing a police chief and his aide during a roadside ambush in the southern Philippines earlier this week, and a manhunt is under way, officials said Friday.

National police chief Rodolfo Azurin Jr. told news hounds he had directed officers to coordinate with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the country’s former largest separatist group that controls a Moslem autonomous region in the south, to catch the suspects in the attack in Maguindanao province.

The suspects are believed to be former MILF guerrillas who joined the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters
...a MILF splinter group aligned with the Islamic State...
(BIFF), a splinter group that has rejected the regional grinding of the peace processor with the government and is allied with a Philippine faction of the Islamic State (IS) group.

"Our hot pursuit operation is ongoing. As far as the identification of the suspects, they are BIFF. I have directed our men to file the case against these perpetrators," Azurin said without identifying each individual.

The suspects were blamed for killing police Lt. Col. Reynaldo Samson and his aide, Cpl. Salipudin Endab, outside of Ampatuan town on Tuesday. Three other coppers were maimed in the ambush and ensuing firefight.

Samson was the local chief of police.

The officers were on their way to arrest a narco identified as Abdulnasser Guianid, who was believed to have close ties with holy warrior organizations, police said.

The six suspects involved in the ambush also have existing arrest warrants, Azurin said.

"Right now, we are still waiting for the response of the MILF who have to show sincerity because we have signed the peace pact," Azurin said.

As part of a pact agreed to under a peace deal struck between Manila and the MILF in 2014, officers can enter the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Moslem Mindanao (BARMM), which the Moro Islamic Liberation Front controls.

"They should help the (national) government, which has already accommodated them. This time, we need reciprocity from them. So surrendering these people is part of that reciprocity that we are expecting," he said.

Senior MILF member Mohagher Iqbal, who served as the former rebel group’s chief peace negotiator, said the suspects are not members of the MILF, but of the splinter group.

"Rest assured, our men on the ground will assist authorities in hunting down the suspects behind the ambush," he told BenarNews.

Abdulraof Macacua, another senior MILF member, said its forces were directed to cooperate with police and the military if troops are dispatched to MILF strongholds to search for the suspects.

In a separate statement, BARMM front man Naguib Sinarimbo denied any MILF involvement in the attack.

"The MILF has nothing to do with it," he said.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
US compels Iran to release seized sail drones
[Jpost] Iran has been building up its naval presence in the Red Sea, near the coast of Yemen where Tehran backs the Houthi movement.

The United States compelled Iran for a second time this week to release US military sail drones that it tried to seize at sea, US officials said on Friday.

The incident there, after an earlier one in the Gulf, was the latest reminder of US-Iran military tensions, even as both countries pursue nuclear talks. They follow exchanges of fire last week between US troops and Iran-backed groups in Syria.

Iran state television earlier on Friday acknowledged the Iranian Navy released two US maritime drones in the Red Sea but accused the American unmanned vessels of jeopardizing maritime safety, without providing evidence.

"The (Iranian navy) frigate Jamaran seized the two vessels on Thursday to prevent any possible accident after issuing warnings to the US fleet. After international shipping lanes were secured, the two vessels were released in a safe area," the TV said.

The US Navy, in a statement, challenged that account, saying the drones were in an assigned patrol area at least four nautical miles from the nearest maritime traffic lane.

"The vessels posed no risk to naval traffic and had been operating in the general vicinity of the Southern Red Sea for more than 200 consecutive days without incident," the Navy statement said.

A US defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, suggested the Iranians sought to secretly seize the drones, pulling the sail drones completely out of the water on Thursday and then covering them with tarps.

Iran initially denied having any US property before returning them on Friday to the US warships that converged on the scene, a US official said.

Iranian television footage aired on Friday appeared to show more than a dozen Iranian navy personnel pushing two drones into the sea from the deck of their vessel.

The Navy statement said the US Navy guided-missile destroyers USS Nitze and USS Delbert D. Black stayed near the Iranian warship, communicating with it "to deescalate the situation and recover the seized Saildrones."

The Iranian warship released the drones in the morning on Sept. 2, the US Navy said.

On Tuesday, the US Navy said it foiled an attempt by Iran's Revolutionary Guards naval forces to capture an unmanned surface vessel operated by the US 5th Fleet in the Gulf. Iran said the drone was a danger to maritime traffic.

MARITIME TENSIONS
Iran has repeatedly warned the United States about its military activities in the Gulf, saying that the Guards' naval forces have increased patrols to secure the passage of Iranian ships and combat fuel smuggling.

The US military, meanwhile, has expanded its use of sea-based drones in the region.

It is unclear if Iran might be seizing the US drones in an attempt to copy them. Some of Iran's drones are based on unmanned aircraft from other countries, and it tried to copy an aerial US RQ-170 Sentinel reconnaissance drone captured in 2011.

Iran and the regional forces it backs have increasingly relied in recent years on drones in Yemen, Syria and Iraq. US officials say Iran is supplying drones to Russia for use in the war in Ukraine, which Tehran has denied.

#8  Also this, just posted on the Times of Israel site:

A pair of American naval drones that were briefly seized Friday by Iranian forces in the Red Sea were returned with their cameras missing, a US official said.

The Iranian sailors initially tried to cover the drones with tarps and deny they had them, added the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss unpublicized details about the seizure.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, it was unclear if the Iranians took the cameras or if they fell off when the drones were removed from the water and later put back in.

The US Navy’s Mideast-based 5th Fleet identified the seized drones as Saildrone Explorers. Those drones are commercially available and used by a variety of clients, including scientists, to monitor open waters.

“The unmanned surface vessels were unarmed and taking unclassified photos of the surrounding environment while loitering in an assigned patrol area at least 4 nautical miles from the nearest maritime traffic lane,” the 5th Fleet said.

“The vessels posed no risk to naval traffic and had been operating in the general vicinity of the Southern Red Sea for more than 200 consecutive days without incident.”

The Navy’s guided-missile destroyers USS Nitze and USS Delbert D. Black responded to the seizure at 2 p.m. Thursday and each deployed MH-60 SeaHawk helicopters, the 5th Fleet said. Iran ultimately released the drones at 8 a.m. Friday.

#1  Before anyone gets any 'ideas', there's lots of stuff at these operations that can self-detonate under certain conditions and will definitely do so with operator error. Happens occasionally here in the states, too.

Although the region has experienced a multitude of random booms recently.

Iranian naval flotilla has foiled a pirate attack on an Iranian merchant vessel in the RedSea

An Iranian naval flotilla foiled a pirate attack on an Iranian merchant vessel in the Red Sea, the navy said, following a similar incident last month.

"A suspicious boat with 12 armed people on board approached the Iranian merchant ship in Bab al-Mandab" strait on Thursday, the state news agency IRNA said, citing a statement by the navy.

It said a squadron had come into confrontation with the "pirates in the Red Sea," adding that the invading boat "left the area" after the escort flotilla, "headed by the Jamaran destroyer... opened fire" at the vessel.

The incident comes after the Pentagon said on Tuesday that an Iranian ship seized an American military unmanned research vessel in the Gulf but released it after a US Navy patrol boat and helicopter were deployed to the location.

On August 10, a senior Iranian navy commander said the same naval flotilla thwarted an overnight attack on another vessel belonging to the Islamic republic.

Rear Admiral Mustafa Tajeddini said at the time that, following a help request by an Iranian ship in the Red Sea, the flotilla was dispatched to the scene and engaged fire with the attacking boats.

"After heavy exchanges, the attacking boats made off," he added.

Like other countries dependent on the shipping lane through the Red Sea and Suez Canal, Iran
...The nation is noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence...
stepped up its naval presence in the Gulf of Aden after a wave of attacks by Somalia-based pirates between 2000 and 2011.

Rare photo surfaces of top Al Qaeda leaders inside Iran
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

A recently surfaced photograph of three of Al Qaeda’s top leaders, including Saif al Adel — the man many believe to be the successor to emir Ayman al Zawahiri
...Formerly second in command of al-Qaeda, now the head cheese, occasionally described as the real brains of the outfit. Formerly the Mister Big of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Bumped off Abdullah Azzam with a car boom in the course of one of their little disputes. Is thought to have composed bin Laden's fatwa entitled World Islamic Front Against Jews and Crusaders. Currently residing in the North Wazoo area assuming he's not dead like Mullah Omar. He lost major face when he ordered the nascent Islamic State to cease and desist and merge with the orthodox al-Qaeda spring, al-Nusra...
— shows that they were present in the Iranian capital of Tehran. Numerous U.S. government designations have previously outlined the presence of senior Al Qaeda leaders in Iran, but this photo offered rare visual proof.

The photo was originally published by @Sw0rdOfAnon (Anonymous) on Twitter. Two U.S. intelligence officials independently confirmed to FDD’s Long War Journal the authenticity of the photograph, as well as the identities of the three men. The intelligence officials said the photograph was taken in Tehran before 2015.

The photograph shows, from left to right, Saif al Adel, Abu Muhammad al Masri, and Abu Abu al Khayr al Masri.
Typo? We have an Abu al Kheir al Masri in Rantburg’s archives — the former head of al Qaeda's "external relations" committee, considered as a possible successor to the late Osama bin Laden as AQ’s Number One.
The photograph casts significant doubt on the assertions that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp and Ministry of Intelligence kept these and other Al Qaeda leaders under strict house arrest.
