Hurricane Milton strengthens into Category 4 hurricane as Florida orders compulsory evacuations
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] … from 10am ahead of nine-foot storm surges.

Fast-approaching Hurricane Milton has been upgraded to a Category 4 storm before it smashes into Florida on Wednesday in a one-two punch for residents who are still recovering from Helene.

The storm was upgraded Monday morning, meaning it's now expected to bring 'catastrophic damage' as it heads toward Orlando and Tampa Bay - an area still reeling from Hurricane Helene last month.

Helene brought record storm surges to the area, killing 230 people while obliterating several small towns in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas. Meteorologists have warned that Milton could be even worse.

The government's disaster response agency, FEMA, has been blasted over its slow response to Helene, with those in the path of Milton now warned not to expect immediate federal aid if they choose to ignore evacuation orders.

Kevin Guthrie, head of Florida's Department of Emergency Management, warned Milton could be 'life-threatening' and urged residents under evacuation orders to follow them.

'We are preparing for the largest evacuation we have seen since, most likely, 2017 Hurricane Irma,' he said. Around seven million people were told to evacuate the Sunshine State when Irma hit.

Maybe we'll get some rain.

Chimney Rock devastation from Helene, approx 25 SE of Ashville, NC
[Video]
This footage in Chimney Rock is from October 3rd.

Previous post:
A lot of people have been asking how they can help. Here's what I saw October 1st:

I think the area is starting to get saturated with very legitimate help. I'm not sure how many more hands on deck are needed but I could be wrong. Water is the obvious thing needed since water systems have been compromised/contaminated so if you can find a reputable organization to donate to for water and food, that's a good idea. I was in Swannanoa this morning - they were hit HARD. The river swept through there killing people, reducing homes to rubble, and destroying businesses. I saw random people there just setting up tents with water, food, coffee, snacks. I think that's a great idea as people are in clean up mode, exhausted, sad and they need these things - they can't get these items anyway because maybe their car was crushed, their road is washed out, power is out so grocery stores are closed, etc. People need fuel for their generators (lines are hours long at the stations that are open).

There are communities stuck on top of mountains due to their only line of access being completely destroyed with no hope of it being fixed anytime soon. They're requiring air drops and rescues and these guys seem to be doing a good job if you'd like to donate - Aerial Recovery Group (links below).

Wellness checks in the region are a good idea. A friend sent me https://www.unitedway.org/ as a way to sign up to do wellness checks if you're local. I'm not sure how that organization works but it's an idea. You can also look in forums and see people asking about specific addresses.

Crazy thing is, this is just a few communities. Asheville, Hendersonville, Burnsville, this whole region, needs assistance. People are coming to help in big ways now, though. I met a group down in the river today from Myrtle Beach, a search and rescue team. I talked with some Cajun Navy people on side by sides today. The more the merrier.

Many people are asking what they can bring or what to donate. It's hard for me to answer that. Please go on facebook and search for a reputable organization, where they are, and what they need. Someone like local churches, Samaritan's Purse, Cajun Navy 2016, etc. There are a lot of good organizations here right now but I don't know them all.

#6  Good morning. I live in the area hit by the flood on the Tennessee side of the mountain - right on the Unicoi County line 10 min from Erwin, TN. My daughter lives in Newport and my in-laws live near the Nolichucky River between Erwin and Greeneville. I have family across the mountain in Spruce Pine, Burnsville, and Micahville, NC. I was out with the first responders the day/night of the flood on the Doe River and in Erwin.

I agree with Besoeker, lots of legitimate help is in the area. Agencies/churches are looking for the means and locations to warehouse the aid near the folks that need it. The NG is here, lots of Blackhawks and Chinooks are flying/working here and in NC.

Re: FEMA - I have not heard any complaints on them on this side of the mountain, none. Most of the FEMA folks here are FEMA reservists (retired LE, MIL folks) that serve part time during disasters.

IMO, there is a lot of disorganization, which will soon sort itself out, that is causing the frustration that you read about on social media. Also, there is an immediate flash to bang on complaints made (founded and unfounded) that are immediately amplified without context on the social media sites.

So, bottom line - I personally have not heard of any FEMA stormtroopers seizing aid, or claiming Eminent Domain on this side of the mountain. The $750 offer of help from ole Kamala did piss everyone off though. Only one complaint of FEMA workers thoughtlessly taking a block of hotel rooms next to the disaster area - they should have rented rooms an hour or so away from the disaster are and drove in every day and left the rooms available for the victims in my opinion. If I hear of anything I will pass it on, if you hear of anything, let me know and I will check it out and report back.

#8  "The official death toll from Hurricane Helene rose yesterday to 227 across six states, with about half of the victims being in North Carolina. But sources on the ground in North Carolina tell The Spectator that the true scope of the death and devastation wrought by the storm is not even close to being understood. In addition, the rescue and recovery efforts have been largely undertaken by private citizens, as the state and federal responses have been hamstrung by incompetent public officials. "

“It’s so much worse than they’re saying,” said one individual who was in Asheville when Helene hit. “I think there’s a massive cover-up.”

Installation of eight bells completed at Notre Dame Cathedral
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] Work on installing eight bells restored after the 2019 fire has been completed at Notre Dame de Paris. This was announced on October 5 by French Culture Minister Rachida Dati, BFMTV reports.

"Another important and symbolic step forward, 64 days until the opening! The faithful and the people of Paris will once again be able to hear the ringing of the bells from the top of the towers of our Parisian cathedral," the Minister of Culture wrote.

Each bell has its own name, all of them are named after important people in the history of the cathedral. The largest and heaviest bell, Gabriel, weighs 4.1 tons, the lightest is named Jean-Marie, weighing 782 kg. The bells were cleaned of lead dust that settled on them when the roof of the cathedral burned, and also restored at a foundry in Normandy.

Earlier, Regnum News Agency reported that French President Emmanuel Macron insisted on developing modern stained glass windows for Notre Dame Cathedral (Notre Dame de Paris), despite the fact that the National Heritage and Architecture Committee issued a negative opinion on this issue in July. We are talking about stained glass windows that were not damaged during the 2019 fire and are formally protected cultural heritage sites. The proposal to replace some of the stained glass windows with modern ones has caused sharp criticism in France.

On May 25, a 12-meter-tall metal cross was installed on the roof of the cathedral, which was damaged in a fire in April 2019. The structure was restored by craftsmen in Normandy, Le Parisien reported. In December 2023, the metal rooster, which contains Christian relics, was returned to the spire of Notre Dame Cathedral.

In April 2019, a fire broke out in Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, which lasted for more than 15 hours. As a result, the spire, clock, and original 12th-century roof collapsed. The restoration work was estimated at approximately 1 billion euros.

French leader Emmanuel Macron said Notre Dame Cathedral, which was restored after a fire, would reopen to visitors on December 8.

Amnesty: Two killed in Pakistan over blasphemy charges in one month
[KhaamaPress] Amnesty International announced on Sunday, October 6, that cases of killings on charges of blasphemy
...the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence to a deity, or sacred objects, or toward something considered sacred or inviolable. Some religions consider it to be a crime. In Pakistain you can commit blasphemy by looking cross-eyed at a Koran...
have increased in Pakistain. The organization reported that in September alone, at least two individuals were killed by coppers in the provinces of Sindh and Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
for alleged blasphemy.

Amnesty International noted that since the beginning of 2024, at least four people have been killed in Pakistain on blasphemy charges.

The organization added that in September, a 32-year-old Moslem doctor in the Umarkot district of Sindh province was killed by Pak police after being accused of blasphemy.

In the same month, a 52-year-old Moslem man, the owner of a hotel in Quetta, Balochistan, was also killed by police on similar charges.

Amnesty International highlighted that since Pakistain gained independence in 1947, 107 people have been killed on blasphemy charges. Among the victims, nine were teachers, and 48 belonged to religious minorities.

The organization has called on Pak authorities to take effective measures to prevent such incidents and hold those responsible for these killings accountable. Amnesty International also urged the government to repeal all blasphemy laws in the country.

Verizon goes down for thousands across US with users unable to make calls or use internet
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] Verizon went down across the US on Monday, leaving users unable to make phone calls, send text messages or surf the web.

Downdector, a site that monitors online outages, showed issues began about 8am ET, with customers reported mobile phone and internet services are not working.

Customers in New York City, Washington DC and Phoenix had the highest concentration of reported issues.

This marks the second Verizon outage in less than two weeks, with the last hitting in September 30.

About 69 percent of users cited problems with mobile phone service, 21 percent reported with 5G Home internet, and two percent said they had no signal, according to Down Detector.

Verizon told DailyMail.com: 'Some Verizon Wireless customers experienced a short service disruption when calling landlines this morning.

The outage lasted for a few minutes and is now resolved.'

Verizon customers shared their frustration on X, with many posting: 'Verizon is down again.'

One user joke on the platform, sharing: 'Don't worry, you paid your bill. Verizon is down.'

However, some customers were furious about another outage in less than two weeks.

'This is becoming way too frequent. Get it together, Verizon, or I'm walking,' a customer shared online.

While the cellular giant did not acknowledged the outage, Verizon Support was asking users on X about problems they are experiencing.

Verizon has more than 143 million users in the US - but the amount hit by the outage is unknown.

Scientists say the first battle on European territory took place in Germany 3,300 years ago
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] The first large-scale battle on the territory of modern Europe took place approximately 3,200–3,300 years ago near the banks of the Tollense River in Germany. This was reported on October 6 by RIA Novosti, citing the findings of archaeologists and historians
Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. Let’s just say that that the oldest large battle we now know about was then, and there could have been battles much older.
According to scientists, about 4,000 people took part in the battle, of which about a quarter died. However, researchers do not have exact data on which tribes the participants in the battle belonged to. A paleogenetic analysis of the remains of 14 people revealed a common Central and Northern European origin.

However, scientists have been able to establish that some examples of arrowheads have a characteristic shape, a “diamond” base and teeth – exactly the same ones found in more southern regions, Bavaria or Moravia (the territory of modern-day Czech Republic).

"It could have been a military commander or a charismatic leader with his retinue, who provided mercenary services. Or maybe a detachment of a kingdom. Or a coalition of tribes," says archaeologist, doctoral student at the University of Berlin and lead author of the study Leif Inselmann.
