#1  Traumatic amputation is not life-threatening if treated quickly enough. Ending up with an ostomy bag isn't life threatening. Nor is being blind.
So the comfort level isn't what the PIO might be thinking it is.

#5  Thanks, Frank and tw. My wife and I are driving down to visit his wife and two kids for Halloween to cheer them up.

Also, he is up for Major in January, and his name is Tom. So we have David Bowie's Space Oddity already queued up (Ground control to Major Tom ...)

#7  Besoeker, that's his plan.

He did get commissioned relatively late in life (age 31). He spent 4 years in the Marine Corps, got out in 2000, got married, after a few years went back to school and got his commission through AF ROTC.

Jordan's former counterterror chief Habis al-Hanini shot dead
[Aljazeera] Jordan's former counterterrorism chief General Habis Hanayneh has been shot dead outside his home, according to medical and security sources.

Hanayneh was killed around 7pm (16:00 GMT) on Tuesday in the city of Madaba, around 30km southwest of the capital, Amman.

The 56-year-old, also known as Abu Haytham, died from three gunshot wounds to the chest and was pronounced dead on arrival at al-Nadim hospital, doctor Ibrahim Owais told Al Jazeera.

The assailant has been arrested, according to a statement issued by the spokesman of Jordan's public security department.

"The murderer confessed to his crime, saying he had planned it a while ago, believing that Hanayneh was behind his arrest in Russia in 2005, and caused him trouble at his work," the spokesman said in a statement.

A senior Jordanian intelligence officer and a former senior CIA officer who still has ties to Jordan confirmed Hanayneh's death.

The senior Jordanian intelligence officer, who spoke to Al Jazeera on condition of anonymity, said he had known and worked with Hanayneh for decades and that his death "was a tragic loss to Jordan and the counterterrorism community around the world".

A former CIA analyst, who had worked with Hanayneh in the past and did not wish to be identified for this report, told Al Jazeera that Hanayneh was an "extremely smart intelligence officer" and that he "really understood the underpinning of why individuals join extremist groups".

Hanayneh retired from Jordan's General Directorate of Intelligence (GID) "about a year ago", said the senior Jordanian intelligence officer.

This is the first time in recent memory where a high-ranking Jordanian intelligence officer was killed either on active duty or in retirement.

Shots fired at Israeli troops in Palestinian city; army says no soldiers hurt
[IsraelTimes] IDF investigating identity of perpetrators of attack in southern West Bank city of Halhul

Shots were fired Tuesday evening at a group of Israeli soldiers in the West Bank, the military said.

No troops were hurt in the incident in the Paleostinian city of Halhul in the southern West Bank, according to a statement by the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit.

Details of the attack, including the identity of the assailants, were being investigated, the statement said.

The attack came after a 17-year-old Paleostinian was apprehended earlier in the day by Border Policemen at Hebron’s Tomb of the Patriarchs after he pulled a knife on them.

Police said the teen arrived at a security checkpoint at the entrance to the West Bank city’s holy site and was instructed to empty his pockets. Though he complied, a metal detector went off when he passed through it.

When coppers told him to lift his shirt, he at first refused, then pulled out a large knife he had hidden on his person and brandished it at the officers.

Policemen aimed their weapons at the suspect and ordered him to put down the weapon. He was eventually subdued without shots being fired, and was placed in durance vile
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!
and taken for questioning.

Police said they believed the suspect had intended to smuggle the knife into the site in order to carry out an attack.

Gazan teen said killed in border clashes with Israeli troops
[IsraelTimes] Army says some 200 Paleostinians riot along security fence, throw explosives at soldiers; fire balloons from Strip start 6 blazes in south

Paleostinians clashed with Israeli troops on the Gazoo border Tuesday, with the Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood,-run health ministry in the Paleostinian enclave reporting a 17-year-old had died of injuries sustained during the violence.

Muntaser al-Baz, 17, was shot by Israeli soldiers during a protest east of the Bureij refugee camp and died at the Shifa hospital in Gazoo City, according to the ministry.

Five others were maimed during the unrest, the ministry said.

An Israeli army spokeswoman told AFP that troops at the border fence opened fire during a violent protest by about 200 Paleostinians.

"They burned tires and threw bombs at soldiers," she said. "They also threw a petrol bomb."

She said none of the soldiers were maimed.

"Troops responded with riot dispersal means and gunfire according to the rules of engagement," she added.

In addition to the festivities on the border fence, incendiary balloons launched from Gazoo sparked six fires near Israeli towns in southern Israel, a front man for the Fire and Rescue Services said.

terror group in eastern Syria amid intensifying battles.

"Our forces have blitzed ISIS Lions of Islam and attacked their fortifications inside al-Sousah village", a statement published by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said.

Fierce festivities were reported inside the small village before the Kurdish fighters were capable of entering it.

The advance was made after the village was heavily bombed by the US-led coalition, killing scores of ISIS jihadists as well as civilians.

In this context, The U.S. Coalition destroyed a mosque that was used by the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist organization as a command center in eastern Syria, the Joint Task Force of the Operation Inherent Resolve stated.

"On October 22, a Coalition strike destroyed several buildings used by ISIS to launch attacks against Syrian Democratic Force partners in As Susah, Syria," the blurb said.

Last week, Syria accused the US-led coalition of bombing the town of Hajin in Deir Ezzor with internationally banned munitions.

According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the battles between ISIS and the Kurdish forces have so far killed 419 ISIS Lions of Islam and 232 SDF fighter.

The monitoring group also documented the death of at least 48 civilians ‐ including 12 children ‐ in Arclight airstrikes conducted by the US-led coalition on Deir Ezzor countryside.

Rebels still frisky in Latakia and Aleppo governates, Russian troops gently succor residents in Rif Dimashq and elsewhere
[AlMasdar] Numerous ceasefire violations by bandidos holy warriors operating in Syria’s Idlib de-escalation zone were reported in Syria’s Latakia governorate and Aleppo’s neighborhoods over the past day. One serviceman of Syrian government forces was maimed, chief of the Russian Center for reconciliation of the conflicting sides Vladimir Savchenko said on Monday.

"During the day shelling attacks were reported from the settlement of Dahr abu-Assad in the Latakia governorate, Aleppo’s Makanis al-Duwayri neighborhood and the area around the research center. One serviceman of Syrian government forces was maimed as a result of shelling in Makanis al-Duwayri," Savchenko said.

Apart from that, in his words, positions of Syrian government forces near the settlement of Tadef in the Aleppo governorate came under shelling by illegal gangs operating near the city of al-Bab.

During the day, officers of the Russian reconciliation center conducted a humanitarian operation in the settlement of Jisrein in the Rif Dimashq governorate. A total of 1.29 tonnes of food products were distributed among civilians.

"In the past day, officers of the Russian Center for Reconciliation of the Opposing Parties helped sort out the status of 200 people who reside in areas formerly controlled by illegal gangs. Eight pieces of firearms were surrendered," Savchenko added.

The Russian reconciliation center continues to fulfill assigned tasks after the completion of the military campaign in Syria. The center’s officers regularly travel around the country’s liberated areas to assess the humanitarian situation. The main efforts of the Russian military are now focused on assistance to the refugees returning to their homes.

Idlib: rebels refuse to leave buffer zone, more civilans exit

Syrian Army preparing to launch Idlib operation after jihadists refuse to leave buffer zone – report

[AlMasdar] (9:20 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) is preparing to launch a new operation inside of the Idlib Governorate, the Fars News Agency reported on Tuesday.

Citing a Syrian military field commander, Fars News said that the jihadist rebels are reinforcing their positions in the Idlib Governorate’s buffer zone, while also resuming their attacks on the government’s positions.

“The army has specified the strongholds of heavy arms, tanks, cannons, missiles and mortar launchers in demilitarized zone mentioned in Sochi Agreement,” Fars News reported.

The commander said that a group of Ajnad al-Sham, deployed near a Turkish monitoring post in the small town of Sarmin, pounded the Syrian Army positions in the town of Kafraya in Eastern Idlib; this resulted in a heavy firefight.

A military source in the town of Mhardeh told Al-Masdar News last week that the Syrian Arab Army believes the jihadist rebels have no intention to leave the buffer zone.

The source said that the Syrian Army and Russian military watched the jihadist rebels of Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham and the Turkestan Islamic Party building new trenches around the Latakia part of fthe buffer zone.

Turkey is reportedly trying one last time to convince the jihadist rebels to leave the buffer zone; however, if they fail to withdraw, the Syrian Arab Army and Russian military will resume their operations at this front.

More civilians to exit Idlib through Abu Duhur crossing

[AlMasdar] (3:30 P.M.) – The Syrian government has re-opened Abu Duhur humanitarian crossing to allow more civilians exit the jihadi-held territories in Idlib toward the government-controlled areas.

Supported by Russian military, the humanitarian corridor is equipped with all logistics necessary to receive the civilians who will be leaving the rebel-run parts of the northwestern province.

Both Syrian and Russian armies will oversee the crossing, providing the basic needs as well as medical aid.

Tens of thousands of civilians have crossed the corridor to the government-held areas as the major offensive for Idlib drew near.

In a related context, the Russian and Syrian militaries are considering re-opening Qalaat al-Madiq and Morek crossings in northern Hama.

[IraqiNews] The Syrian Democratic Forces, backed by the U.S.-led Coalition, have announced retaking a strategic village and inflicting huge losses in lives on Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. in its last bastion, east of Euphrates.

In a statement, SDF said "counter-terrorism battles have achieved progress and inflicted losses in lives and equipment on the enemy. It liberated half of al-Sousah."

The coalition jets, according to the statement, carried out seven Arclight airstrikes against Islamic State locations in al-Bagoz, al-Sousah and Hajin cities.

"The confrontations in these fronts left 14 forces of Evil killed, while two SDF fighters were killed and three others injured," it added.

Speaking to BasNews, a source from SDF said "our campaign against Islamic State will last for longer than the expected due to the sandstorm that hits the region from one side, in addition to using civilians as human shields by the forces of Evil from another side."

The group also, according, to the source, planted explosives in its last stronghold, which includes villages of al-Bagoz, Hajin, al-Shaafa, al-Sousah, Abu Khater and abul Hassan.

In September, each of the Coalition and SDF announced the launch of operations, east of Euphrates.

SDF controls 28 percent of the Syrian lands, becoming the second controller of lands, after the regime forces, which control around 60 percent.
