Afghanistan
Unknown gunmen attack residence of slain journalist
[KhaamaPress] At least three people were killed and five more were maimed in an attack by unidentified gunnies in the western province of Ghor on Thursday night, sources said on Friday.

In an unknown gunnies attack on the house of slain journalist Bismillah Adil, three people were killed and five others were maimed.

The incident happened on Thursday night in western province of Ghor.

Media outlets reported that Adil’s brother, cousin, and his 13-year-old nephew bit the dust and five others who are maimed are his family members.

Adil’s other brother claimed that the attack was conducted by the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
, but the group rejected their involvement in the cold-blooded murder case.

A team has been assigned to investigate the case, and protests have reportedly been launched in the province in relation to the liquidation.

Bismillah Adil was a journalist, activist, and former head of Radio Sada-e-Ghor, who was murdered on the first day of the year 2021.

In another incident journalist’s rights defenders on Friday called for a probe into the assault case on a local news hound in Kapisa province.

The delay in the assessment will have negative impacts on efforts to support freedom of the press in Afghanistan, Journalist’s rights defenders said.

Reports indicate Maqbool Noor a journalist from Parwan province was preparing a report on land grabbing when he was beaten by armed individuals associated with the head of dispute resolution and tribal affairs directorate in the province.

Noor was beaten and threatened to death, his cameraman was also hit with a gun on the head, reports show that they both were brutally attacked.

This comes despite the peace efforts in the country, many journalists were assassinated, out of fear many fled the country and the media self-censored itself which massively challenges access to information.

Faryab Residents Fear Clashes Will Intensify as Spring Nears
[ToloNews] Faryab residents on Friday said they are concerned about increasing insecurity in the northern province as many districts have witnessed festivities over the last week and that the fighting will intensify on the arrival of the spring season.

Faryab police said seven out of 14 districts of the province have witnessed deadly festivities between the security forces and the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
over the last week.

"People are concerned because the spring season is near and they fear that the festivities will intensify, more people will displace and more people are killed," said Asadullah Jamali, a resident of Faryab.

"Many residents have shifted to the center of the province from other districts, and they are in a bad situation," Faryab resident Rauf Andar said.

A member of the provincial council in Faryab, Mohammad Saeedi, said that hundreds of families have been displaced in the province following the classes.

"The big problem is that the government takes action after an incident happens," Saeedi said. "Sometimes they have information about the Taliban's intention to launch an attack, but they wait and watch so that something happens and then they will take."

Qaisar, Almar, Khwaja Sabz Posh, Shirin Tagab, Dawlat Abad, Pashtun Kot and Gerziwan districts have witnessed attacks by the Taliban on security forces over the last week. Police said casualties were inflicted on both sides.

"At least 17 armed Taliban have been killed in the last week and 24 others were maimed. Many of their group leaders are among those killed and maimed," Faryab police front man Abdul Karim Yurish said.

He said that five security force members were killed and seven more were maimed in the festivities.

Gunmen kidnap 317 schoolgirls in northwest Nigeria
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]
The Times of Israel adds:
Police and the military have begun joint operations to rescue the girls after the attack at the Government Girls Junior Secondary School in Jangebe town, according to a police front man in Zamfara state, Mohammed Shehu, who confirmed the number kidnapped.

Resident Musa Mustapha said the button men also attacked a nearby military camp and checkpoint, preventing soldiers from interfering while the button men spent several hours at the school. It was not immediately clear if there were any casualties.

Several large groups of gunnies operate in Zamfara state, described by the government as bandidos,
...the so-called bandits are believed to launch attacks from Rugu forest, which straddles Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna and Niger states...
and are known to kidnap for money and to push for the release of their members from jail.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari said Friday the government’s primary objective is to get all the school hostages returned safe, alive and unharmed.

Nigeria has seen several such attacks and kidnappings over the years, notably the mass abduction in April 2014 by jihadist group Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
of 276 girls from the secondary school in Chibok in Borno state. More than a hundred of the girls are still missing.

Friday’s attack came less than two weeks after button men kidnapped 42 people, including 27 students, from the Government Science College Kagara in Niger State. The students, teachers and family members are still being held.

In December, 344 students were kidnapped from the Government Science Secondary School Kankara in Katsina State. They were eventually released.

At least 60 killed in clashes in Yemen's Marib
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]
An Nahar adds:
Over 60 fighters were killed in festivities in Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
Friday between Iran-backed Iran's Houthi sock puppets
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The legitimate Yemeni government has accused the them of having ties to the Iranian government. Honest they did. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews They like shooting off... ummm... missiles that they would have us believe they make at home in their basements. On the plus side, they did murder Ali Abdullah Saleh, which was the only way the country was ever going to be rid of him...
s
and government forces in the strategic northern province of Marib, government sources said.

The dead included at least 27 pro-government forces and 34 Houthis, a government source told AFP, adding it was the "most violent mostly peaceful" day of festivities since fighting erupted earlier this month.

The rebels moved into hills near a dam southwest of the city of Marib -- the last major toehold in the north for Yemen's Saudi-backed government -- with the area witnessing "the fiercest battles", according to the source.

A military source said that pro-government forces repelled the Huthi advances and reported heavy fighting that lasted "more than eight hours" in the Ablah region south of Marib city.

There was loss of life on both sides, the military source added.

Earlier this month, the Iran-backed Huthis resumed a push to capture the city of Marib, which lies close to some of Yemen's richest oil fields.

Its capture would be a major prize for the rebels.

Explosion on a ship in the Gulf of Oman; crew safe and heading to nearby port
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]
An explosion struck an Israeli-owned fat merchantman sailing out of the Middle East on Friday, an unexplained blast renewing concerns about ship security in the region amid escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran.

The crew and vessel were safe, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, which is run by the British navy. The explosion in the Gulf of Oman forced the vessel to head to the nearest port.

Dryad Global, a maritime intelligence firm, identified the stricken vessel as the MV Helios Ray, a Bahamian-flagged roll-on, roll-off vehicle cargo ship. Another private security official, who spoke to The News Agency that Dare Not be Named on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters, similarly identified the ship as the Helios Ray.

Satellite-tracking data from website MarineTraffic.com showed the Helios Ray had been nearly entering the Arabian Sea around 0600 GMT Friday before it suddenly turned around and began heading back toward the Strait of Hormuz. It was coming from Dammam, Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, and still listed Singapore as its destination on its tracker.

Israel's Channel 13, in an unsourced report, said the assessment in Israel is that Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
was behind the blast. Israeli officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Capt. Ranjith Raja of the data firm Refinitiv told the AP that the Israeli-owned vessel had left the Persian Gulf Thursday bound for Singapore. On Friday at 0230 GMT, the vessel stopped for at least 9 hours east of a main Omani port before making a 360-degree turn and sailing toward Dubai, likely for damage assessment and repairs, he said.

The vessel came loaded with cargo from Europe. It discharged vehicles at several ports in the region, Raja added, including in Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, with its last port of call at Dammam.

While details of the earth-shattering kaboom remained unclear, two American defense officials told the AP that the ship had sustained two holes on its port side and two holes on its starboard side just above the waterline in the blast. The officials said it remained unclear what caused the holes. They spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity to discuss unreleased information on the incidents.

A United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
ship database identified the vessel's owners as a Tel Aviv-based firm called Ray Shipping Ltd. Calls to Ray Shipping rang unanswered Friday.

Abraham Ungar, 74, who goes by "Rami," is the founder of Ray Shipping Ltd., and is known as one of the richest men in Israel. He made his fortune in shipping and construction. According to the Nikola Y. Vaptsarov Naval Academy, where Ungar provides support and maritime training, he owns dozens of car-carrying ships and employs thousands of engineers.

The U.S. Navy's Bahrain-based 5th Fleet said it was "aware and monitoring" the situation.

While the circumstances of the earth-shattering kaboom remain unclear, Dryad Global said it was very possible the blast stemmed from "asymmetric activity by Iranian military."

In the tense summer of 2019, the U.S. military blamed Iran for explosions on two oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most strategic shipping lanes. The U.S. also had attributed a series of other suspected attacks to Iran, including the use of limpet mines -- designed to be attached magnetically to a ship's hull -- to cripple four oil tankers off the nearby Emirati port of Fujairah.

German court commits Hamburg synagogue attacker to psychiatric hospital
[DW] The man who tried to kill a Jewish student in front of a Hamburg synagogue is "mentally ill" and will be treated in a psychiatric facility, a German court has ruled.

A German court found on Friday that a 29-year-old cannot be held legally responsible for an apparently anti-Semitic attack on a synagogue last year.

While the incident was a "assassination on a person of Jewish religion," the attacker is suffering from paranoid schizophrenia and was driven by religious delusions, according to the Hamburg-based court.

The judges ordered for the Kazakhstan-born German national to be placed in permanent psychiatric care.

WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE SYNAGOGUE ATTACK?
In October 2020, the assailant put on military fatigues and took a taxi to a synagogue in Hamburg.

Once there, he targeted a 26-year-old yarmulke-wearing student, hitting him over the head with a short-handled shovel. The victim was hospitalized with severe injuries but managed to survive. The attacker was quickly arrested.

WHAT DID INVESTIGATIONS REVEAL?
Investigators found a drawing of a swastika in one of his pockets.

According to the court, the suspect carried it because his mother believed it would protect him from his delusions. The mother described the swastika as a symbol of the sun.

The court did not find evidence to link the attacker with any far-right movement. He is believed to have acted on his own.

During the trial, the 29-year-old refused to comment on the case. He also refused a psychiatric assessment, with a mental health expert offering his estimate based on the man's medical file and his Whatsapp messages.

While announcing the decision on Friday, judge Birgit Woitas confirmed that the attacker was a "mentally-ill person acting on his own" and that he still posed a danger to others. His stay in a psychiatric hospital will be reviewed on a yearly basis.

ISIS suspect arrested in Erbil by Kurdish counter-terror forces
[RUDAW.NET] Kurdish forces arrested a member of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) earlier this month in Erbil and handed him over to Baghdad, the Kurdistan Region’s counter-terrorism directorate said on Friday, denying reports he had been captured by Iraqi intelligence.

Several Iraqi media outlets reported Thursday that Iraqi intelligence had followed a suspected member of ISIS from Fallujah to Hit in Anbar, and on to Nineveh, before arresting him in Erbil.

The suspect was the "head of snipers" in the terror group, an "authorized source" told al-Sumaria news agency.

Erbil’s counter-terror directorate confirmed the arrest on Friday but said it was made by its own forces, not Iraqi intelligence.

"Our directorate conducted an operation in Erbil city on February 9, 2021, and arrested a member of ISIS [ISIS] terrorist organization, Bashar Mustafa Hafez Adwan al-Awaisi. He has carried out several terrorist activities inside Baghdad city," read a statement from the Kurdistan Region Security Council’s General Directorate of Counter Terrorism.

"Because this terrorist had carried out terrorist activities inside Baghdad province and he was officially requested by Baghdad security forces to be handed over, we handed the terrorist over to Baghdad forces on February 24, 2021 as per the judge’s order," added the statement.

There has been no official statement from Iraqi security forces regarding the arrest.

Iraqi security source: Two martyrs,147 wounded, Nasiriyah protests toll
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]
An Nahar has the details:
Three anti-government protesters were shot dead Friday in clashes with Iraqi security forces in Nasiriyah, medics said, the deadliest day in a week of violence in the southern city.

Protesters have defied a second wave of coronavirus infections and renewed lockdown measures to vent their anger at the government over poor public services. Similar protests, also over unemployment and corruption, erupted in late 2019 and morphed into an unprecedented anti-government movement across southern Iraq and Baghdad. But while they faded elsewhere in the country, rallies have continued to grip Nasiriyah.

This week, demonstrators have gathered outside the main governorate building to demand the dismissal of governor Nazem al-Waeli over a deterioration in public services.

On Friday, three protesters were shot dead by security forces, medics in the city told AFP.

"Another 47 people were wounded but the hospitals are all full of coronavirus patients. We're struggling to find places to treat them," one medic said.

- FLARING VIOLENCE -
Protesters were trying to block off some of Nasiriyah's main bridges throughout the day, but security forces were responding by firing live rounds.

One protester was killed in similar confrontations on Monday and another on Thursday.

Decades of war, government graft and a dearth of investment have left Iraq's water, electricity and other public works in a pitiful state. Many households have only a few hours of mains electricity per day and complain of polluted tap water.

Nearly 600 people have been killed in protest-related violence since late 2019, including in mass violence at demonstrations but also in targeted assassinations. One of the bloodiest incidents was in November 2019 in Nasiriyah, when more than three dozen demonstrators were killed at the city's Zeitun (Olive) Bridge. The incident sparked outrage across Iraq and prompted the resignation of then-prime minister Adel Abdel Mahdi, replaced by current premier Mustafa al-Kadhemi.

Kadhemi, as commander-in-chief of Iraq's armed forces, has repeatedly ordered security forces not to fire on crowds. He has even ordered the removal of top security officials there but to no avail.

Kadhemi has also pledged to bring the perpetrators of all protest-related violence to justice. Earlier this month, he announced the arrest of four members of a suspected "cell" that carried out assassinations of activists and journalists seen as sympathetic to the anti-government movement.

The renewed violence comes less than two weeks before Pope Francis is set to visit Dhi Qar province, of which Nasiriyah is the capital, as part of the first-ever papal trip to Iraq.

Israeli accused of spying for Hamas, providing intel on rocket defense array
[IsraelTimes] Shin Bet says Mohammad Abu Adra, who for family reasons was permitted frequent travel between Israel and Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. , was recruited 18 months ago to gather information for terror group.

An Israeli civilian was indicted Friday for allegedly acting as an agent for the Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, terror group inside Israel, providing the organization with information that included locations of Iron Dome missile defense batteries.

Mohammad Abu Adra, 43, was arrested on February 3 following an investigation by police and the Shin Bet security service.

Authorities said Abu Adra is the son of an Israeli Bedouin father and a Gazook mother, and his wife is from Gaza as well. Due to his special status, he was allowed to travel on a regular basis between the Strip and the Israeli city of Rehovot.

For this reason, Hamas recruited Abu Adra some 18 months ago, the Shin Bet said, with Abu Adra agreeing to work for the terror group, maintaining clandestine contacts with it and gathering and transmitting information requested of him from inside Israeli territory.

No information was provided on the nature of the information provided to Hamas by Abu Adra beyond Iron Dome locations.

He was indicted Friday at the Beersheba District Court for security offenses that include membership in a terror organization, a decision to commit treason and providing information to the enemy.

A statement from the Shin Bet said Hamas "is ceaselessly working to recruit Israeli citizens for the purpose of intelligence gathering in order to enable terror attacks in Israel."

A source in the security agency said this was another example of the group taking advantage of those permitted to cross between Israel and Gaza "to destabilize the region, despite of, and in parallel with, ongoing efforts to reach a [long-term] arrangement" between the sides.
