Afghanistan
'Suicide attacks violate Islamic principles,' Muslim scholars tell Taliban
[DAWN] Moslem scholars from Pakistain, Afghanistan and Indonesia issued an edict on Friday saying that violent extremism and terrorism, including suicide kabooms, are against Islamic principles, in an effort to convince the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
to end its violence.

Seventy prominent Moslem scholars from the three countries issued the fatwa at a conference in Indonesia on ways to achieve peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, who opened the one-day meeting, stressed Indonesia's commitment to helping build peace in the war-torn country.

Jokowi said the conference was part of Indonesia's efforts to encourage the role of Islamic holy mans, or Learned Elders of Islam, in promoting peace in Afghanistan.

"Through the voice of Learned Elders of Islam, mainly from Afghanistan, Pakistain and Indonesia, presumably the spirit of brotherhood for peace in Afghanistan can be strengthened," Jokowi said.

"Ulema are the agents of peace ... they have the power to form the face of peaceful people," Jokowi said.

He expressed hope that the conference could contribute concretely to peace in Afghanistan.

In a declaration, the scholars said Islam was a religion of peace and denounced all kinds of violent extremism and terrorism.

"We reaffirm that violence and terrorism cannot and should not be associated with any religion, nationality, civilisation or ethnic group, as violent extremism and terrorism in all its forms and manifestation including violence against civilians and suicide attacks are against the holy principles of Islam," the declaration said.

The Taliban urged Islamic holy mans to boycott the Bogor conference and warned Afghan holy mans, "Do not afford an opportunity to the invading infidels in Afghanistan to misuse your name and participation in this conference as means of attaining their malicious objective."

The conference at the presidential palace in Bogor, a West Java town on the outskirts of Jakarta, was organised by the Indonesian Ulema Council.

Egypt to open Rafah border crossing with Gaza for four days starting Saturday
Offering a distraction while Hamas gins up The Biggest Protest Evah (TM) for Israel’s 70th Independence/Nakhba Day, when the American embassy in Jerusalem will formally open? The Egyptians have warned Hamas that the protests are a very bad idea...
[AlAhram] Egyptian authorities will open the Rafah border crossing with the Gazoo Strip in both directions from Saturday till Tuesday, the Paleostinian Embassy in Cairo said in a statement.

The Paleostinian Embassy praised Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and the country’s security apparatus for their efforts to ease the suffering of the Paleostinian people.

The Rafah border crossing is the main gateway to the outside world for 1.8 million Paleostinians living in the Israeli-besieged Gazoo, and is the only crossing point not controlled by Israel.

The Egyptian government opens the Rafah crossing periodically for humanitarian purposes.

'Elements of extremism' involved in South Africa mosque attack: police
[DAWN] South African police hunting for three men who stabbed worshippers at a mosque outside Durban said on Friday that the attackers' motive was unknown but "elements of extremism" were involved.

Three attackers killed one worshipper, reported to be a holy man, and seriously injured two others after midday prayers on Thursday at a mosque in Verulam town, on the outskirts of the eastern port city.

The assailants, who also set off a petrol bomb inside the Shia mosque, escaped in a car after the attack.

"There are elements of extremism because the incident happened in a place of worship and the manner in which it was conducted," Simphiwe Mhlongo, front man for the Hawks police unit, told AFP.

"It shows hatred towards the worshippers."

Mhlongo stressed that the motive for the attack was still unknown, adding that a major hunt was under way to find the attackers.

Demo staged against polio vaccination
[DAWN] PESHAWAR: Residents of Shaheen Moslem Town announced boycott of polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. The protesters were led by Awami National Party

Talking to mediapersons, the protesters claimed that two children had died a few days ago in Shaheen Moslem Town, Peshawar, soon after they were administered polio vaccine. The death certificates, they claimed, had also proved that the deaths occurred due to the injections which had caused serious unrest and panic among the people.

They said that they would not allow anyone to come to the area for anti-polio campaign. They warned that they would continue the demonstrations unless an FIR was registered against the DHO for his negligence in the case.

US diplomat who killed biker in road accident doesn't have 'absolute immunity', IHC rules
[DAWN] The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday ruled that a United States diplomat, who was involved in a traffic accident that led to the death of a youth in the capital, does not have absolute immunity.

On April 7, US Defence and Air Attaché Col Joseph Emanuel Hall jumped a red light at Daman-e-Koh Chowk and hit a cycle of violence. As a result, two riders of the bike suffered injuries and one of them, 22-year-old Ateeq Baig, later died.

Col Hall had escaped arrest because of diplomatic immunity but a first information report (FIR) regarding the incident was registered with Kohsar Police Station.

Ruling on a petition of the dear departed man's father, Justice Aamer Farooq ruled that the diplomat does not have absolute immunity.

In the verdict that was reserved on Monday and announced today, the court has ordered the interior ministry to decide about placing Col Hall's name on the Exit Control List (ECL) within two weeks.

Mohammad Idrees, Ateeq's father, had filed a petition through his counsel Shahzad Akbar for placement of the diplomat's name on ECL. CCTV footage of the Safe City Project shows the diplomat driving a white land cruiser at a high speed and hitting the cycle of violence after violating the red signal.

On April 24, the interior ministry had informed the court that in order to restrict the movement of Col Hall, his name had been placed on the blacklist of the directorate of immigration.

In his concluding arguments on Monday, the counsel had argued before Justice Farooq that "absolute immunity of diplomats may defeat citizens’ trust in the justice system".

#17  Let's say a Pakistani diplomat ran a red light and killed a motorcyclist in New York City. Would you support her getting off without spending a few years in prison?

Emotional claptrap. It’s the ancient tradition of diplomatic immunity, as g(r)omgoru said. Wikipedia has a long article here full of the dreadful things diplomatic staff have got off scot free by invoking:

The Vienna Convention is explicit that "without prejudice to their privileges and immunities, it is the duty of all persons enjoying such privileges and immunities to respect the laws and regulations of the receiving State." Nevertheless, on some occasions, diplomatic immunity leads to some unfortunate results; protected diplomats have violated laws (including those that would be violations at home as well) of the host country and that country has been essentially limited to informing the diplomat's nation that the diplomat is no longer welcome (persona non grata). Diplomatic agents are not, however, exempt from the jurisdiction of their home state, and hence prosecution may be undertaken by the sending state; for minor violations of the law, the sending state may impose administrative procedures specific to the foreign service or diplomatic mission.

Violation of the law by diplomats has included espionage, smuggling, child custody law violations, money laundering,[12] tax evasion, making terrorist threats,[13] slavery, preying on children over the Internet for sex,[14] and murder.

And it must be remembered that Pakistan is not a safe place for unbelievers, whether from individuals and mobs running amok, jihadi organizations, or various tools of the ISI. The case of Raymond Allen Davis, also in Pakistan, comes to mind. Perhaps the Pakistanis are hoping for another $2million-plus payout...

Govt cannot arrest Khadim Hussain Rizvi because of Faizabad agreement, says Sanaullah
[DAWN] Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

Law Minister Rana Sanaullah on Friday said the government can not arrest Tehrik-e-Labbaik Pakistain (TLP) chief Khadim Hussain Rizvi because of the Faizabad agreement, which had contained a provision for the withdrawal of all cases against TLP leaders.

"The government is not backing off, but there is an agreement carrying the signatures of the guarantor [an intelligence chief] and [representatives of] the government and we have to abide by it," Sanaullah said while speaking to the media.

Rizvi, along with other leaders who participated in the Faizabad sit-in led by Tehrik-e-Labbaik Ya Rasool Allah (TLYRA) last year, has been declared a proclaimed offender by an anti-terrorism court.

The sit-in, after turning violent following a crackdown by police, had concluded with an agreement wherein the government capitulated to most of the protesters' demands, including that of the removal of then law minister Zahid Hamid.

Maj Gen Faiz Hameed of the Inter-Services Intelligence
...the Pak military intelligence agency that controls the military -- heads of ISI typically get promoted into the Chief of Army Staff position. It serves as a general command center for favored turban groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad, tries to influence the politix of neighboring countries, and carries out a (usually) low-level war against India in Kashmir...
(ISI) had signed the agreement as its ’guarantor’.

Regarding the recent attack on Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal and the attacker's link with Tehrik-e-Labbaik, Sanaullah said that security should be beefed up and the mindset giving rise to such incidents should be corrected instead.

He demanded that the elements involved in "creating the mindset", which includes "some elements within the state", be held accountable instead.

International-UN-NGOs
UN nuclear watchdog’s chief inspector resigns without explanation
[IsraelTimes] IAEA gives no reason for Tero Varjoranta's departure, days after US exit from international atomic accord his agency was tasked with monitoring

The chief inspector of the UN’s nuclear watchdog the ineffective International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) resigned Friday, a spokesperson for the agency said.

No reason was given for Tero Varjoranta’s sudden departure, which comes days after US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
took America out of the deal between Iran and world powers over its nuclear program.

The IAEA conducts inspections in Iran to verify compliance with the terms of the deal.

"The Agency’s safeguards activities will continue to be carried out in a highly professional manner," the spokesperson said.

Varjoranta, who had been in post since late 2013, has been replaced on a temporary basis by Massimo Aparo, the acting director of the Agency’s Office for Verification in Iran.

Varjoranta is Finnish and had previously served as head of Finland’s Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority.

A permanent replacement will be appointed as soon as possible, the IAEA spokesperson said.

Fears for deal’s future
US officials have said that despite the US’s withdrawal from the Iran accord, they want the IAEA’s inspections in Iran to continue.

"The United States will continue to support robust implementation of IAEA inspections in Iran to the full extent of the IAEA’s authority," an official at the US mission to the IAEA told AFP on Friday.

Known officially as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the deal between Tehran and major world powers forces Iran to open any site to the IAEA within 24 days at most.

Since the accord was reached in 2015, the IAEA has carried out hundreds of inspections inside Iran.

The IAEA says that thanks to access afforded under the accord, inspection work has doubled since 2013, with its inspectors now spending 3,000 man-days on the ground in Iran last year.

The agency also points to the some 2,000 tamper-proof seals attached to nuclear material and equipment and to the "hundreds of thousands of images captured daily by our sophisticated surveillance cameras," the number of which has almost doubled since 2013.

Since the JCPOA came into force, the IAEA has issued regular quarterly reports confirming that Iran is adhering to its "nuclear-related commitments" under the deal.

The other parties to the deal, including Russia, China and European powers, say they want to keep it alive despite Trump’s move.

However,
a woman is only as old as she admits...
some analysts fear a collapse of the deal now that the US has withdrawn and re-imposed sanctions on Iran, which may lead to Iran ending co-operation with the IAEA’s inspections.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Senior officer warns Gaza protests to be most violent yet — report
[IsraelTimes] Next week's demonstrations will coincide with Paleostinian 'nakba' commemorations and with US embassy move to Jerusalem

A senior IDF officer reportedly warned that next week’s Gazoo protests are expected to be the most violent yet and could spill over into the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Some 50 Paleostinians have been killed and thousands maimed in more than a month of demonstrations, according to the Hamas, one of the armed feet of the Moslem Brüderbung millipede,-run Gazoo health ministry, and the IDF fears that the final act next week could be much worse.

The army anticipates that there will be 17 different sites of confrontation along the border and has stationed 11 battalions to contain the protests, the senior officer in the southern command told the Haaretz daily Friday.

There are also fears that the West Bank and East Jerusalem will see protests and the IDF has sent in reinforcements there too.

The protest will be the culmination of a month of demonstrations to mark what Paleostinians call their "nakba," or catastrophe of Israel’s founding and also the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and move their embassy to the city.

The embassy ceremony will take place on May 14, the anniversary of Israel’s founding according to the civil calendar. Israel marked its Independence Day last month, according to the Hebrew calendar.

The IDF is expected to try and keep the protesters further away from the fence than they have been at current protests and if possible not allow them beyond the tent camps, some 300 meters (yards) from the border, Haaretz said. It did not provide details on how the IDF would do so.

Earlier this week, Hamas’s leader in Gazoo Yahya Sinwar said he hoped that hundreds of thousands of Paleostinians would breach the border fence from Gazoo into Israel during next week’s protests.

Sinwar said the mass protest would be "decisive," and vowed that he and other brass hats were "ready to die" in a campaign to end the blockade.

Israel has repeatedly expressed concern over the possibility of a mass breach of the Gazoo fence, in which Paleostinians would stream across with turbans among them, wreaking havoc. Sinwar has vowed in the past that protesters would "breach the borders and pray at al-Aqsa," referring to the major Moslem shrine in Jerusalem.

Sinwar was freed in a prisoner swap with Israel in 2011 and was elected as the movement’s Gazoo chief in 2017.

Hamas has said if the protests "don’t achieve their goals," they will continue.

#5  I appreciate Ariel Sharon as a battlefield commander and his humanity as a Prime Minister.
However his relinquishing of control of Gaza was a mistake would it help the gazans / palestinians if Israel were to tell them that they were rescinding that offer and henceforth the land of gaza would henceforth be re-regarded as Israeli land and subject only to Israeli law and those that wouldn't accept that would be welcome to move to the East bank.

U.S. to Palestinians: 'Get on board before events overtake you'
[Jpost] Paleostinian resistance to America's opening of an embassy in Jerusalem on Monday is based on a "fantasy" unhelpful to their cause that they retain veto power of the fate of the ancient capital, senior Trump administration officials said on Friday.

Previewing the embassy opening, the officials called on Paleostinian Authority leaders to "get on board" with the "reality" of Jerusalem's status as Israel's capital, and on the presence of the US embassy there. The PA has effectively cut off contact with the US administration since President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
chose to recognize that status in December of last year.

"Circumstances are changing," one official said, and they should "get on board before events overtake them."

US diplomats raised a toast to their last day in the old US embassy in Israel, long based in Tel Aviv. The opening event on Monday will be attended by hundreds of guests, including the US ambassador to Israel, David Friedman; the daughter and son-in-law to the president, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner; Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin; and Jason Greenblatt, the US special representative for international negotiations.

Trump will not attend the opening but will instead offer remarks by video. Vice President Mike Pence will address a gathering in Washington that evening marking the 70th anniversary of Israel's independence.

The officials noted their decision to open the Jerusalem embassy has had no tangible effect on their relations with other countries‐ nor has it changed the course of an historic alignment between Israel and the Arab world.

In particular, one official lauded a message from a Bahraini official on Thursday defending Israel's response to an Iranian rocket barrage into the Golan Heights this week.

"It's a sea change we've been waiting for," the official said. "It's so important to see an Arab nation recognize Israel as a country, and a country that has a right to defend itself."

Israel takes responsibility for missile strike on Hama, Aleppo
No point in staying silent about that one, given the even bigger missile strikes that followed.
[Ynet] Israel confirms missile strikes on Syrian bases housing Iranian troops in Hama and Aleppo was carried out by the IDF in order to destroy air defense systems and missiles intended to be used against it.

The IDF has taken responsibility Friday for the missile strike on the bases in the Hama and Aleppo countryside, in which some 25 people were killed, most of them Iranians, and 35 others were maimed.

The attack targeted Iranian-made air defense systems that were transferred to Syria with the intention of being used against Israel.

A day before, the New York Times

...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

reported that 200 missiles had been destroyed in the missile strike.

According to NBC, in recent weeks, Iran has increased military shipments to Syria.

The supplies included ground-to-air missiles, which, according to two US officials, were meant to strengthen Iran's forces in Syria in preparation for an attack on Israel.

The kabooms were registered as a 2.6 magnitude earthquake by the European Mediterranean Seismological Center.

Israeli defence minister tells Assad to 'throw Iranians out' of Syria
[DAWN] Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Friday urged Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Lord of the Baath...
to expel Iranian forces from his country, after Israeli air strikes hit alleged Iranian targets in Syria.

"I shall take advantage of this opportunity to send a message to Assad: throw the Iranians out," a defence ministry statement quoted Lieberman as saying during a visit to the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

"They are not helping you," he said. "They only do harm and their presence brings only damage and problems."

Israel claims it struck dozens of Iranian targets inside Syria early on Thursday in response to a salvo of rockets fired by Iranian forces into the occupied Golan Heights.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Iran had "crossed a red line" and that Israel's bombardment against targets in Syria "was a consequence".

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Russia, after Netanyahu visit, backs off Syria S-300 missile supplies
[Ynet] In a surprising volte-face, Russia says it has no plans of selling Syria S-300 ground-to-air missiles; statement made just days after PM Netanyahu's visit in Moscow and Israel's massive Arclight airstrike in Syria.
They could always change their minds again, but wouldn’t it be embarrassing if Israel did to the S-300 what it did the other night to the Russian-made long-range SA-5, AKA the S-200 (predecessor of the S-300 and S-400); the Russian high-altitude SA-2, or S-75; the Russian short-to-medium range SA-22, AKA the Pantsir-S1; and the SA-17 medium-range air defense system, AKA the Buk.
Russia is not in talks with the Syrian government about supplying advanced S-300 ground-to-air missiles and does not think they are needed, the Izvestia daily cited a top Kremlin aide as saying on Friday, in an apparent U-turn by Moscow.

The comments, by Vladimir Kozhin, an aide to President Vladimir Putin
...President-for-Life of Russia. He gets along well with other presidents for life. He is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substance. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to him. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substances...
who oversees Russian military assistance to other countries, follow a visit to Moscow by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this week, who has been lobbying Putin hard not to transfer the missiles.

Russia last month hinted it would supply the weapons to Assad, over Israeli objections, after Western military strikes on Syria. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the strikes had removed any moral obligation Russia had to withhold the missiles and Russia’s Kommersant daily cited unnamed military sources as saying deliveries might begin imminently.

But Kozhin’s comments, made so soon after Netanyahu’s Moscow talks with Putin, suggest the Israeli leader’s lobbying efforts have, for the time being, paid off.

"For now, we’re not talking about any deliveries of new modern (air defense) systems," Izvestia cited Kozhin as saying when asked about the possibility of supplying Syria with S-300s.

The Syrian military already had "everything it needed," Kozhin added.

Israel has made repeated efforts to persuade Moscow not to sell the S-300s to Syria, as it fears this would hinder its aerial capabilities against arms shipments to Iranian-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah. Israel has carried out scores of air strikes against suspected shipments.

On Thursday, Israel said it had attacked nearly all of Iran’s military infrastructure in Syria after Iranian forces fired rockets at Israeli-held territory. S-300s could have significantly complicated the Israeli strikes.

The missile system, originally developed by the Soviet military, but since modernized and available in several versions with significantly different capabilities, fires missiles from trucks and is designed to shoot down military aircraft and short and medium-range ballistic missiles.

Though since been superseded by the more modern S-400 system, the S-300s are still regarded as highly potent and outstrip anything that the Syrian government currently has.

Syria currently relies on a mixture of less advanced Russian-made anti-aircraft systems to defend its air space.

Russian media on Friday were actively circulating a video released by the Israeli military which showed an Israeli missile destroying one such system‐a Russian-made Pantsir S-1 air defense battery‐on Thursday in Syria.

#2  And given the fact that Israel has been hitting targets in Syria since the nuclear site a few years ago with apparent ease... It makes me think that they are showing the Russian weapons aren't as good as they claim and Ivan doesn't want any more embarrassment over them.

Would hurt sales.

"If he (Israel) acts foolishly, then we level with the ground of Tel Aviv and Haifa, "Khatami added.

Prior to Khatami’s statement, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman called on the Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
