Sudan extends cease-fire with southern rebels
[ARABNEWS] Sudanese and South Sudanese officials agreed late on Saturday with the leader of an alliance of armed factions operating along their joint border to extend a cease-fire and grant humanitarian access to some areas affected by conflict in Sudan.

Sudan said neighboring South Sudan has been giving refuge to Malik Agar, one of many rebels in Sudan. The two countries share a long and mostly non-existent border, and have a history of supporting gangs on each others’ territories after oil-rich South Sudan became independent in 2011.

Sudan and Agar signed a cease-fire on April 17 covering the Blue Nile and South Kordofan regions, a week after Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir
Head of the National Congress Party. He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself president-for-life. He has fallen out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. Peace talks will continue as rebel factions from Sudan’s Darfur region arrive in Juba on Sunday from Addis Ababa.

Saturday’s talks were attended by Tut Gatluak, South Sudan’s presidential envoy on security; Gen. Mohammed Hamadan Dagalo, deputy chief of Sudan’s ruling Transitional Military Council (TMC); and Agar, head of a loosely affiliated group of armed opposition groups.

Presidency clarifies reasons for proscribing Shiite group
[PULSE.NG] After obtaining a court order to proscribe the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), the Presidency has explained the reason behind the proscription of the Moslem group.

The presidency said the proscription was meant to stop the "killings and wanton destruction of both public and private property by the IMN."

In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, July 28, 2019, the government said the clarification became necessary following allegations by IMN members that the government has stopped them from observing five times daily prayers and going to Mecca for pilgrimage.

The statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity Garba Shehu reads in part: "The Presidency explains that contrary to the claim by IMN that it had been banned from practising its religion, President (Muhammadu) Buhari’s administration has not banned Shi’ites from observing their five daily prayers and going to Mecca to perform the Holy pilgrimage.

"Their position is blatantly false and deceptive.

"The IMN is deliberately changing the narrative in order to gain sympathy and divert the attention of the world from its terrorist activities, including attacking soldiers, killing coppers and a youth corps member, destroying government ambulances and public property, consistently defying authority of the state.

"The Presidency notes that the banned

organization
was taken over by bandidos murderous Moslems who didn’t believe in peaceful protests and instead employed violence and arson, driving fear and undermining the rights of others and constituted authority.

"The Presidency agrees that the Constitution protects freedom of worship, but not to the detriment of the society, especially where such freedom harms others, and breaks law and order."

Oman not mediating, but in contact with ‘all parties’ over navigation in Hormuz
[ARABNEWS] Oman is not undertaking any mediation efforts around rising tensions in the Gulf region but is in contact with "all parties" in order to maintain stability in the Strait of Hormuz, Oman's minister in charge of foreign affairs said on Sunday.

"We are not mediating, but what we are more concerned with, in this case, is securing the stability of navigation in the Hormuz Straight, so we are in contact with all parties," Yousuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah told Omani state TV after meeting Iranian officials in Tehran.

Dozens of migrants still stuck on vessel in Italy port
[AlAhram] An Italian coastguard vessel stranded in the Mediterranean with more than 130 migrants colonists aboard has been allowed to dock in the eastern Sicilian port of Augusta but Rome on Sunday refused to let them disembark until a deal is struck with the EU.

"The Gregoretti berthed in the port of Augusta overnight, as is normal procedure for a military vessel. Now the EU has to act because the migration question concerns the whole continent," Transport Minister Danilo Toninelli said in a statement.

Some 140 migrants colonists, who had set off from Libya in two rickety boats, were picked up by Italian patrols on Thursday night and transferred to the Gregoretti ship.

The operation took place on the same day that at least 115 other migrants colonists were believed to have drowned in a shipwreck off Libya -- the Mediterranean's deadliest tragedy this year, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Several migrants colonists aboard the Gregoretti have already been evacuated for medical attention, including a seven-month pregnant woman, her two children and her partner. However,
some people cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go...
Italia's far-right Interior Minister Matteo Salvini has reiterated that the remaining migrants colonists would not be able to leave the vessel until other Europe

an countries agree to take them in.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced last Monday that 14 EU members had approved a plan to redistribute refugees rescued in the Mediterranean, and eight said they would actively take part.

The Grand Turk
Turkish students given text books justifying 9/11 attacks
[ARABNEWS] A modern history text book for Ottoman Turkish public school students appears to justify the Sept. 11 attacks in the US by al-Qaeda and labels the Europe
...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
an Union a "Christian club", according to a report in Nordic Monitor.

The article from NM, a group that covers religious, ideological and ethnic bad boy movements and radical groups, also shows that the text-book ‐ which mirrors speeches by The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
’s president Recept Tayyip Erdogan ‐ contains text criticizing the NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis....
alliance.

The book, used by twelfth-grade students in public schools in Turkey, says among its pages: "The US, which has more say with the self-confidence it gained in the aftermath of the Cold War but complies less with international agreements, has started to see itself as one above equals in international relations.

"From that point forward, deciding which countries would be punished and what systems would be changed relied on definitions and references made by the US. These practices by the US are one of the reasons behind the al-Qaeda terrorist organization’s attack on 9/11."

According to the text book, the US became "the main source of problems in the world with what it did in the aftermath of September 11," and is seeking to secure the "absolute dominance" of the international system.

The book also takes aim at the Pope and the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
for denying Turkey’s membership of the bloc ‐ slamming the "denial of membership to Turkey, a predominantly Moslem nation, while accepting (other) democratically and economically weak states," which it said raised questions about the identity of the EU.

Within the same section, the book features a photo of EU leaders and the Pope in 2017 as they gathered in Rome to mark the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, with a caption from British-Polish historian Norman Davies: "I am talking about the common tradition of Christianity, which has made Europe what it is."

Erdogan referenced the photo during his 2017 presidential referendum rallies and said it proved western Europe was "hostile to Islam."

The book’s criticism of NATO stretches to the group’s multilateral foreign policy, which it claims has destroyed Turkey’s defense industry and has made Turkey "dependent on US military aid."

Critics of the text book say school children in Turkey are being force-fed the rhetoric spread by Erdogan and his party at a young age.

14 police stations to be set up in N Waziristan
[DAWN] North Wazoo district police officer Shafiullah Khan said on Saturday that land had been acquired for establishing 14 cop shoppes and courts across the district.

Addressing a gathering of police personnel in the Tehsil Jirga Hall, he said that a total of 14 cop shoppes had been sanctioned for the district. Presently, he added, three cop shoppes, one each in Miranshah

Mr Shafiullah directed the coppers to perform their duties honestly, adding that a performance-based promotion mechanism would be devised to encourage hardworking officers. However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
he hastened to add: "It should be clear to everyone that disciplinary action, including forced termination, would be taken against those found involved in negligence."

He said that the police should play their due role in putting the militancy-hit Waziristan on track to peace and prosperity.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman threatens march on Islamabad if government does not step down by August
[DAWN] Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam
...the political wing of the Pak Taliban...
-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman
Deobandi holy man, known as Mullah Diesel during the war against the Soviets, his sympathies for the Taliban have never been tempered by honesty ...
on Sunday threatened to march on Islamabad if the government does not step down by August.

Speaking at a 'million march' rally organised by the party in Quetta, the JUI-F chief said that "failure to do so would result in the entire country marching down on Islamabad in October".

"We want to clarify that the drums of war have already been beaten as a message to such forces, such international agents, the representatives of global powers, and the false leaders who have forced their way into power."

"I want to highlight that the Quetta million march is our last million march and now our next step will be taken in Islamabad," he said.

The JUI-F chief, directly addressing the government, said that in the first phase of their plan, a chance was being given to the government "to resign by August upon which they will save themselves from the Islamabad march".

"If you do not resign by August, you will find us in Islamabad by October," he vowed.

He claimed that the entire country would march in October. "This will be an independence march. The way we freed ourselves from the British, we will free ourselves from this government."

The JUI-F chief emphasised that since the joint stance by the opposition is that the elections were rigged and are not accepted by them, new elections must take place. He said that the same had been discussed in the recently held All Parties Conference.

Israel said to confiscate 1,600 online orders sent to Gaza, fearing military use

Strip, concerned that seemingly innocuous items are intended for military use against the Jewish state, according to a report Saturday.

The Ynet news site said 1,600 items bought via online retail sites were confiscated over the past year on their way to the Strip.

The so-called dual-use products, so named for their potential military applications, include drones that can be used for intelligence-gathering; hidden cameras that can be planted on the border fence; encrypted two-way radios, diving equipment, laser pointers, night-vision equipment, masks, helmets, antennas, military-style shoes and more.
"The laser pointers are for our cat videos"
Orders intended for Gaza are shipped to Israel before being transferred to the Strip. Suspect items are tagged and inspected by the Civil Administration, the body which implements Israeli civil policy in the Paleostinian territories, and any dual-use items are seized.

"We inform the recipient that his package was confiscated and sent for liquidation," Second Lieutenant Sahar Weiss, an officer at the Erez border crossing, told Ynet. "Gazooks whose delivery has been seized can file an appeal."

Israel has maintained a blockade of the Gaza Strip since the Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, terror group took over the territory in 2007, and says it is necessary to prevent arms from entering Gaza that could be used in attacks against it. Egypt has kept its border with the Strip shut as well. Israel regularly allows screened goods to enter Gaza through its border crossings.

#3  Number of Palestinian children killed by Israel in 2018 highest in 4 years

disclaimer: Despite some half-hearted googling, including searching the UN website itself, I can't find this report.

But I can't help wondering...
56 is a lot. If you piled them up in the living room, it'd be quite a heap.
But what sort of change is that? Was it 55 last year? Given that children come as discrete units, that's only about a 2% change - essentially noise.
Is there a trend up or down? Even if the trend is flat, a growing number of paleos being killed at the same rate means more deaders, so pardon me if I save my outrage for something important.

Apologies to any journalists in the office for getting all mathy.

IS Claims Deadly Attack on Syrian Government Troops

They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group has grabbed credit for an attack that killed six soldiers in Syria's southern province of Daraa, the cradle of the 2011 uprising against the government.

The jihadist group said it was responsible for a "suicide operation" Saturday during which one of its fighters sprayed soldiers with machine-gun fire before detonating an "explosive vest."

The claim, posted late Saturday on the Telegram messaging app, was the second by the group this week for an attack in Syria, from which it was largely expelled last year.

IS on Monday said it was responsible for a deadly boom-mobileing in Damascus, where a civilian was killed when a vehicle went kaboom! in the southern suburb of Qadam.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britannia-based war monitor, said six soldiers were killed and several other people maimed in Saturday's attack in Daraa, where peaceful anti-government protests erupted in March 2011.

It said a bomber riding a cycle of violence went kaboom! at a military checkpoint.

Syrian state news agency SANA also reported a suicide kaboom but said it happened during an "army raid" that targeted "terrorists", a term used by authorities to describe rebels and jihadists. It did not give a corpse count.

Captured Israeli-Arab ISIS Fighter: Israel Is A Democratic State
[Jpost] Sayyaf Daoud told BBC Arabic, "Israel has not done 1% of what Bashir al-Assad has done."
Fascinating two minute video with English subtitles at the link.
A captured Arab ISIS fighter in Syria who holds Israeli citizenship has said that living through the Second Intifada and in the West Bank has taught him that Israel "has not done 1% of what Bashir al-Assad has done."

In an interview with BBC Arabic's Feras Kilani, as reported by MEMRI, Sayyaf Sharif Daoud said in a July 16 interview that despite tensions between Israelis and Paleostinians, Israel does not rape women nor brutally kill its own citizens. Assad's forces have been accused of using rape as a weapon of war and summary executions since the Syrian conflict started in 2011.

"There was fighting and all that, but Israel has not raped women or stripped them naked on TV, and it has not killed with such barbarity," Daoud said in the interview.

While Daout joined ISIS, he claims that his father had warned him against joining either Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, or Fatah, the ruling factions in Gazoo

and the West Bank. Now, he said he hopes to be able to return to Israel and a "normal life."

He said Israel is a democratic state.

"Us Arabs live together in Israel with the Jews. There is no injustice. We are treated just like the Jews," Daoud said.

an-led naval mission to escort tankers in the Gulf, amid soaring tensions over the seizure of ships.

"We heard that they intend to send a European fleet to the Arabian Gulf which naturally carries a hostile message, is provocative and will increase tensions," government front man Ali Rabiei said, quoted by ISNA news agency.

The statements come as the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, Ali Akbar Salehi, told politicians on Sunday that Iran will restart activities at the Arak heavy water nuclear reactor, the ISNA news agency reported.
ISNA cited a member of parliament who attended the meeting. Heavy water can be employed in reactors to produce plutonium, a fuel used in nuclear warheads.
