Libya strongman Haftar in Rome ahead of crisis talks
[PULSE.NG] Libyan strongman Khalifa Haftar
...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...
, whose self-styled Libyan National Army dominates the country's east, was in Rome Monday for talks ahead of next month's Sicily conference on the conflict-hit North African nation.

Italia is trying to convince Haftar to support a crisis resolution plan drawn up by the UN's envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salame, which will be presented to the Security Council a few days before the Sicily meet, Italian media reported.

Haftar arrived in the Italian capital on Sunday and met with Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte for a series of meetings ahead of the November 12 to 13 summit, which will be held in Palermo.

The Italian premier had also held separate meetings on Friday with the head of Libya's UN-backed government, Fayez al-Sarraj, and the UN's Salame.

Libya remains mired in chaos since the fall of dictator Moamer Qadaffy in 2011.

The country is divided between the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA), based in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
, and a rival Haftar-supported administration in the east.

The UN envoy was quoted by Conte's office as saying he believes the Palermo conference could be "a key signal of support by the international community to the political process, which is in a particularly important phase".

Four key leaders from Libya agreed at a conference in Gay Paree in May to hold landmark polls on December 10 as part of a French-led plan to stabilise the crisis-hit country despite ongoing violence.

But La Belle France has faced opposition to the election timetable from the United States along with other European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
countries, notably Italia.

Haftar is set to meet Foreign Minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi on Monday.

Africa Subsaharan
Nigeria: 57 Chibok Girls Seen in Cameroon - Parents
[All Africa] Fifty-seven Chibok school girls being held by Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
have been sighted in two villages in Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
, parents of the kidnapped girls told Daily Trust on Sunday yesterday.

The girls were seen by other female captives who at different times were kept by the bandidos holy warriors in the two villages in northern part of Cameroon, the Chairman of Chibok Girls Parents Association, Yakubu Nkenke, told our correspondent yesterday.

Nkenke said the girls who escaped and returned to their village near Chibok, disclosed that the 57 girls were broken into two groups and held in Garin Magaji and Garin Mallam villages located in Marwa in northern Cameroon.

According to him, all the girls were married off to Boko Haram fighters across the border and many of them had children.

"Some of the captives beat feet from the villages and spent months in military facility in Bama, where they were screened before they were finally released. One of them told us she met many of our kidnapped girls in two Cameroonian villages", he disclosed.

"Seven of the kidnapped Chibok girls are living in Garin Magaji, while 50 others are held in Garin Mallam where they live with their husbands and children," he added.

Nkenke said testimonies from parents as well as records in the association's register matched the names of the girls mentioned by the escapees.

Calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to collaborate with his Cameroonian counterpart to rescue the girls, Nkenke said he believed the military had got the information when they screened the escapees in Bama five months ago.

The Chibok leader noted that the information had thrown Chibok community into confusion and grief as parents expected the authorities to swing into action.

Daily Trust had reported on Friday that 25 parents of the kidnapped girls have died.

However,
a good lie finds more believers than a bad truth...
Nkenke reiterated that the parents remained grateful to the federal government under Buhari, for negotiating the release of 112 girls and rescuing four others.

"Following the visit to Dapchi town by a federal government delegation to meet the parents of Leah Sharibu, the only remaining Dapchi school girl in Boko Haram captivity, the parents of more than 100 Chibok girls still with the bandidos holy warriors called on President Buhari to extend a similar gesture to Chibok.

Arabia
Israeli minister in unprecedented visit to UAE mosque
[DAWN] Israeli minister Miri Regev on Monday shared a video on Facebook of her touring a famed mosque in the United Arab Emirates, in an unprecedented visit by a cabinet member.

The culture and sport minister, known for controversial comments about Arabs, was dressed in a red abaya with a white scarf covering her hair at Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

"I toured the site," Regev told the camera, in Hebrew, surrounded by a group of people in traditional Emirati dress.

"This is the first time that an Israeli minister is here on a visit."

Regev, a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing Likud party, visited the mosque on Sunday, according to her front man.

Her country does not have diplomatic relations with the UAE.

Israeli officials publicly toured landmark sites in the UAE at the weekend, the first such visit, days after Netanyahu travelled to the neighbouring Gulf state of Oman.

The delegation, which includes the country's communications minister, was in Dubai for the International Telecommunication Union Plenipotentiary Conference this week.

"We arrived the day (Sunday) before the conference. We went around the town, and we visited the mall," a member of the delegation told AFP.

Trump won’t sacrifice business ties with Saudis over Khashoggi murder: Journalist
[PRESSTV] US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
’s personal business ties with Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and his connections to the Saudi royal family will prevent Trump from punishing Riyadh for murdering Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi, an investigative journalist in Washington says.

"Trump is not really going to take any action against the Saudis," said Wayne Madsen, an author and columnist specializing in intelligence and international affairs.

"His son-in-law Jared Kushner has a financial arrangement with the Saudis; the Saudis sell his daughter Ivanka’s goods in Saudi Arabian shopping centers," Madsen said during a phone interview with Press TV on Monday.

The murder of Khashoggi, who escaped to the US last year and worked as a Washington Post columnist, has escalated into a crisis for the world’s top oil exporter as Saudi Arabia’s allies have reacted with outrage.

US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Sunday in Bahrain that the killing of Khashoggi undermined the stability of the Middle East and that Washington would take additional measures against those responsible.

Last week, Trump said Saudi officials had engaged in the "worst cover-up ever" and that those behind the killing "should be in big trouble."

But Trump has also highlighted Riyadh as a major purchaser of American weapons.

US politicians have accused Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman
...Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia as of 2016....
, also known as MBS and the country’s de facto leader, of ordering the killing.

Bangladesh
Bangladesh opposition leader handed new jail term as supporters cry foul
[DAWN] Bangladesh's imprisoned opposition leader the loathesome Khaleda Zia
Three-term PM of Bangla, widow of deceased dictator Ziaur Rahman, head of the Bangla Nationalist Party, an apparent magnet for corruption ...
was handed another seven years in prison on Monday on corruption charges her supporters say are politically motivated to prevent her running in a general election.

Zia, long time rival of Prime Minister the loathesome Sheikh Hasina
...Bangla dynastic politician and current Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She has been the President of the Bangla Awami League since the Lower Paleolithic. She is the eldest of five children of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangla. Her party defeated the BNP-led Four-Party Alliance in the 2008 parliamentary elections. She has once before held the office, from 1996 to 2001, when she was defeated in a landslide. She and the head of the BNP, Khaleda Zia show such blind animosity toward each other that they are known as the Battling Begums..
, is already behind bars after being handed a five-year term in February on separate embezzlement charges.

That verdict triggered festivities between police and thousands of loyalists from the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which Zia still leads from prison.

In her latest trial, Judge Mohammad Akhtaruzzman found the 73-year-old guilty of abuse of power and embezzling 31.5 million taka destined for a charitable fund.

The verdict was handed down in a temporary courtroom inside Dhaka Central Jail where Zia ‐ who has been hospitalised for poor health ‐ is the only inmate.

Her lawyers, who were also absent during the verdict, have consistently described the trial as "political vengeance" by Hasina, who has been accused of stifling her opponents.

She said: "None of them had the maturity to understand that they were being groomed and exploited."

Caribbean-Latin America
United Nations: Trump Must Allow Caravan Migrants into America
[Breitbart] International officials with the United Nations (UN) Refugee Agency say President Trump must allow a caravan of Central Americans into the United States to seek asylum.

As Breitbart News has chronicled, migrants with an at least 7,000-strong caravan have repeatedly admitted that they are traveling to the U.S. to seek jobs, re-enter the U.S. as previously deported illegal aliens, and flee crime. One previously deported illegal alien with the caravan even admitted that he was convicted of attempted murder in the U.S. None of these cases are eligible asylum claims.

The UN Refugee Agency, though, is commanding Trump to accept the caravan of refugees, which some estimates now put at 10,000-strong. In an interview with Voice of America, a spokesman for the UN Refugee Agency said:
Our position globally is that the individuals who are fleeing persecution and violence need to be given access to territory and protection including refugee status and determination procedure. And, if the people who are fleeing persecution and violence enter Mexico, they need to be provided access to the Mexican asylum system and those entering the United States need to be provided access to the American asylum system. [Emphasis added]

As Breitbart News reported, the UN Refugee Agency is aiding the caravan of migrants, putting 45 UN workers on the ground with the group of Central Americans.

President Trump is expected to sign an executive order this week that will halt the caravan entering the U.S. on the legal grounds of national security.

Currently, the U.S. admits more than 1.5 million legal and illegal immigrants every year, with more than 70 percent coming to the country through the process known as "chain migration," whereby newly naturalized citizens are allowed to bring an unlimited number of foreign relatives to the country.

Since 2000, more than 1.5 million foreign refugees have been resettled across the U.S. ‐ outpacing the population of Philadelphia. Also, there have been more than 4.1 million legal immigrants admitted to the U.S. from refugee-producing countries since 2000.

#6  Actually no. You have the right to SEEK asylum, but no country is under any obligation to ADMIT asylum seekers.
Posted by: European Conservative || 10/30/2018 7:48 Comments || Top||

#7  EC is correct, although there are a few rules in the US.

(US) Asylum has three basic requirements that must all be met.

  • First, an asylum applicant must establish that he or she fears persecution in their home country.

  • Second, the applicant must prove that he or she would be persecuted on account of one of five protected grounds: race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or particular social group.

  • Third, an applicant must establish that the government is either involved in the persecution, or unable to control the conduct of private actors.

The term 'Asylum' is batted around in a lot of the conversations that one hears, but the majority of folks don't have a clue as to what it actually is or the requirements.

Asylum is NOT a free pass or welcome mat. It is NOT the idea that one can simply enter a country and claim 'Sanctuary'.

#22  Besides the FEMA camps, why are Federal bureaucrats buying guns and ammo? $158 million spent by non-military agencies like SS & Dept. of Education. Despite being outlawed by the Geneva Convention, federal agencies spent $426,268 on hollow-point bullets, including orders from the Forest Service, National Park Service, Office of Inspector General, Bureau of Fiscal Service, as well as Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Marshals, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Trump should listen to the advice former U.S. Senator Dr. Tom Coburn memorialized at Forbes last year after the Orlando nightclub massacre: the non-military, non-law enforcement – paper pushing administrative federal agencies – are the ones who should be subject to stricter gun control laws, not the general public.

Europe
Italy’s far-right party blocks mosque construction
[DAWN] Italia’s far-right League party intervened on Sunday to block efforts by a Moslem association to turn a former hospital chapel into a mosque.

The Moslem group last week made the highest offer for the chapel in the northern city of Bergamo at an auction organised by a local hospital, outbidding the Romanian Orthodox Church which had been using the building for its religious services.

But the project proved short-lived, with League leaders in the wealthy Lombardy region, which includes Bergamo, announcing they would halt the sale by using a 2004 law that enables them to intervene and safeguard cultural sites.

"I would never put a Church on sale and I am amazed that the hospital management did not realise what a sensitive issue this is," Lombardy President Attilio Fontana, a League politician, wrote on Twitter.

"However,
some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them...
we will exercise our right of first refusal (for the sale) and there will be no space for any appeal," he added. His decision means the region must now buy the property.

League leader Matteo Salvini warned earlier this year that Italian culture and society risked being eradicated by Islam.

"Centuries of history risk disappearing if Islamisation, which up until now has been underestimated, gains the upper hand," he said in a statement.

Moslems only represent a small minority in Roman Catholic Italia, with the Pew Research Centre saying they will make up 4.9 per cent of the population by 2020 against 3.7 per cent in 2010.

Merkel will not seek new term as chancellor & CDU chair as party faces support slump
[RT] Angela Merkel
...chancellor of Germany and the impetus behind Germany's remarkably ill-starred immigration program. Merkel used to be referred to by Germans as Mom. Now they make faces at her for inundating the country with Moslems ..
has said she will not seek re-election as Germany's chancellor as well as CDU's party chair. The decision comes after a debacle for her ruling party in the local elections in the federal state of Hesse.

On Sunday, Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) received 28 percent of the votes. Although that was more support than other competitors received, it was a significant drop from the 38.3 percent won by the party in the state's last election in 2013.

However,
by candlelight every wench is handsome...
Merkel claimed that her decision not to run for party chair again was made before the plebiscite and even before German parliament’s summer recess. Party chair aside, the top politician also would not be available for another term as a chancellor.

#1  Succession will be interesting. Friedrich Merz would be a great choice. He's what you would call an undogmatic conservative with strong (classical) liberal ideas about the economy (including taxes).

Merkel's choice would be Annegret Kramp Karrenbauer (aka "AKK"), the current general secretary of the CDU. Not very excited about her. She's Merkel 2.0

Third choice Jens Spahn. Current health secretary. Please no. He's an opportunistic lightweight.

5,000 US troops to deploy to US-Mexico border, report says
[AmMilitaryNews] The Pentagon is apparently set to deploy an additional 5,000 U.S. troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, officials announced Monday.

Troops would be sent from Texas, Arizona and California, the Wall Street Journal first reported.

U.S. to deploy 5,000 troops to the southern border, up from initial estimates of 800, as a migrant caravan moves north in Mexico https://t.co/I7HHAf9iIp

‐ The Wall Street Journal (@WSJ) October 29, 2018

The number is a sharp increase from the 800-troop deployment that was reported last week, as the migrant caravan that has built up to about 7,000 people heads through Mexico toward the United States.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israeli official: We’ve continued strikes in Syria since Russian plane downed
[IsraelTimes] The IDF has continued attacking targets in Syria even after a Russian spy plane was shot down last months, a senior Israeli official says.

"The army’s coordination with the Russian army continues exactly as it did before the event," the official says, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
Moscow blamed the September 17 incident, during which Syria destroyed a Russian Il-20 survey aircraft, killing 15 Russian servicemen, on Israel, arguing that Israeli jets were hiding behind the Russian plane.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may possibly meet Russian President Vladimir Putin
...President-for-Life of Russia. He gets along well with other presidents for life. He is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substance. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to him. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substances...
in early November at a summit in Gay Paree, but the meeting has not been finalized, the official says.

Netanyahu has reiterated several times that Israel will continue to act to prevent Iran’s military entrenchment in Syria and the smuggling of advanced weapons into Leb. But the bigwig’s comment appeared to be the first public acknowledgement that Israel has indeed carried out strikes in Syria after the downing of the Russian spy plane.

Israel falsifies Palestinian curriculum in al-Quds schools: Education minister
Teaching the historical truth instead of traditional Arab lies — how utterly appalling!
[PRESSTV] The Paleostinian Authority (PA) says Israel doctors the Paleostinian curriculum in schools in the occupied city of Jerusalem al-Quds.

Education Minister Sabri Sidem said "the Israeli authorities printed distorted copies of the Paleostinian curriculum and distributed them to the schools supervised by the Israeli municipality in Jerusalem" al-Quds, London-headquartered website the Middle East Monitor reported.

Addressing a news conference on Thursday, Sidem said, "The occupation authorities removed the Paleostinian flag from all books covers, the Paleostinian keffiyeh (a checkered cloth which symbolizes Paleostinian resistance), and the name of the State of Paleostine and its Eagle Logo as well as the phrase ’Ministry of Education and Higher Education.’"

The minister added that Israel had also "removed paragraphs and replaced them with others which support the Israeli case, in an attempt to obliterate the Paleostinian version."

The distortion has affected "all the curricula issued by the Paleostinian Curriculum Development Center," he noted.

Israel occupied the West Bank and East Jerusalem al-Quds during the Six-Day War in 1967. It later annexed East Jerusalem al-Quds in a move not recognized by the international community.

Ever since, Tel Aviv has been setting up settlements in the occupied territories and stepping up "security" measures in Jerusalem al-Quds. The Paleostinians want its eastern part as the capital of a future Paleostinian state.

Iranian official says president’s cellphone was tapped
How exciting — so many possible suspects!
[IsraelTimes] Iranian officials say President Hassan Rouhani’s mobile phone was tapped, without providing details on who was behind it or what information that party might have gleaned.

The semi-official ISNA news agency on Monday quoted Gen. Gholam Reza Jalali, the head of a military unit charged with combating sabotage, as saying Rouhani’s phone was tapped "recently" and would be replaced with a more secure device.

He did not provide further details.

The importance of banning Iran’s regime from SWIFT
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Crippling US sanctions are set to kick in early next month against Iran’s regime, targeting its oil and banking sectors.

While initially calling for "maximum pressures," as we speak, the Trump administration is weighing to what extent these measures should push forward in denying Tehran access to the global financial system.

There is word that US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin is informing foreign governments that Washington may be stepping back from an onslaught aimed at forcing the Belgium-based financial messaging network, Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications, or SWIFT, to cut off sanctioned Iranian banks, according to the Wall Street Journal.

This is a highly important matter as SWIFT, the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications, is considered part and parcel of Washington’s upcoming oil sanctions on Tehran.

If the US were to allow SWIFT continue providing even limited services to the Iranian regime, loopholes would be exploited by Tehran to facilitate money transactions the regime desperately needs.

This is why senior US administration officials are calling for sanctioning SWIFT board members should they decide to facilitate such financial transactions for Tehran. If Trump allows Iran access to SWIFT, his measures would not meet the "maximum pressures" litmus test and be weaker than Barack Obama

Iran’s major oil buyers set to defy US sanctions
[PRESSTV] As the administration of US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
is preparing to impose sanctions against Iran’s oil exports within the next few days, indications are already appearing that certain countries are preparing to defy Washington’s pressures to halt purchases of Iranian oil.

Rooters quoted unidentified sources familiar Iran sanctions issues as saying that at least three of Iran’s top oil clients ‐ India, China and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund....
‐ would resist Washington’s call to end their oil purchase plans from Iran.

The three countries, sources said, maintained that there were not sufficient supplies worldwide to replace Iranian oil volumes.

That pressure, along with worries of a damaging oil price spike, could put the Trump administration’s hard line to the test and could also raise the possibility of bilateral deals to allow some buying to continue, according to the sources.

Iran has already emphasized that the US can never prevent it from selling crude oil to international clients, stressing that no other supplier can substitute the kind of oil it provides to overseas markets.

Iran’s First Vice President Es’haq Jahangiri was quoted by media as saying that the government of President Hassan Rouhani had already devised mechanisms to counter the impacts of returning US sanctions against the country’s oil exports.

Jahangiri emphasized that Iran had serious plans to maintain oil exports above one million

US-led coalition uses white phosphorus bombs against Syrian city: Damascus
[PRESSTV] Syrian Ambassador to the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
Bashar al-Ja'afari says the so-called international coalition led by the United States has once again used white phosphorus bombs against Hajin city in Syria’s troubled eastern province of Dayr al-Zawr.

Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on Monday, the Syrian senior diplomat further condemned the use of banned weapon by the US-led coalition against the small city.

His comments came a few hours after Syria’s official news agency SANA, citing local sources, reported that earlier in the day, the so-called coalition had shelled several localities in Hajin, some 110 kilometers east of Dayr al-Zawr, with white phosphorus munitions that can maim and kill by burning to the bone.

On October 13, SANA also reported that the US-led coalition, purportedly fighting the Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
ISIS terrorist group, dropped internationally-banned white phosphorus bombs on Hajin.

On September 8, two F-15 warplanes of the US Air Force targeted the same Syrian city with white phosphorous bombs.

In June last year, Human Rights Watch (HRW) warned that the US-led coalition was deploying white phosphorous bombs in both Iraq and Syria.
