Director of Benghazi’s Benina Airport resigns due to chaos and lack of authority
[Libya Observer] The Director of Benina Airport in Benghazi, Abdullah al-Shaafi has presented his resignation due to problems between the airport security services and the lack of resources, as well as the lack of seriousness of the authorities of the eastern region to look into the airports' issues.

The Airports Authority of the east-based parallel government has confirmed its rejection to the resignation, saying that the "timing is inappropriate".

At another level, airport administration officials have also staged a protest to demand Shaafi to go back on his resignation.

Arabia
Yemen govt, southern separatists sign power-sharing deal
[DAWN] Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
's internationally recognised government signed a power-sharing deal with southern separatists on Tuesday, in a Saudi-brokered initiative to end a conflict simmering within the country's civil war.

Unrest in the south, which saw secessionist forces seize control of Yemen's interim capital Aden, distracted the Saudi-led coalition from its battle against Iran's Houthi sock puppets
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The legitimate Yemeni government has accused the them of having ties to the Iranian government. Honest they did. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews They like shooting off... ummm... missiles that they would have us believe they make at home in their basements. On the plus side, they did murder Ali Abdullah Saleh, which was the only way the country was ever going to be rid of him...
rebels and raised fears the country could fall apart entirely.

"This agreement will open a new period of stability in Yemen. The kingdom of Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
stands with you," Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman
...Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia as of 2016....
said at a signing ceremony in Riyadh aired on state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
The deal will reportedly see the secessionist Southern Transitional Council (STC) handed a number of ministries, and the government return to Aden, according to officials and reports in Saudi media.

Europe
National courts lead the way in prosecuting Syrian war crimes
[Al Jazeera] German prosecutors last week charged two men who were allegedly former Syrian intelligence officers with crimes against humanity. The charges set the stage for the first prosecution for torture by suspected members of the government's notorious security services and the case will be closely watched by those seeking justice for victims of international crimes committed since the Syrian war erupted in 2011.

International crimes are crimes that are so serious that they affect the international community as a whole. They include war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

In a September report, the UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria said that Syrian government forces backed by Russian warplanes may have committed war crimes, citing two incidents in Idlib province earlier this year. The same report also said that the former al-Qaeda affiliate Hay'et Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else

The Grand Turk
Support for President Erdoğan surges after Turkey's Operation Peace Spring
[DAILYSABAH] Support for President Tayyip Erdogan surged last month after The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
launched Operation Peace Spring in northeastern Syria to clear the PKK's Syrian offshoot the People's Protection Units (YPG) from near its border, a survey by Metropoll showed Tuesday.

Erdogan's approval rating rose by 3.7 percentage points in October to 48%, the survey showed, recording its highest level since shortly after the presidential elections of June 2018, which were held before last year's currency crisis.

His disapproval rate fell 9.3 percentage points to 33.7%, its lowest level since the failed coup of July 2016. Some 18% of participants did not respond to the survey question or said they had no idea.

Four of the five political parties in the Ottoman Turkish Parliament have strongly supported Turkey's operation against the YPG. Only the pro-PKK Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) opposed it.

#2  There's been much discussion of whether Trump was right to pull out troops so Turkey could get at our (nominal) allies, the Kurds. This is why it was a bad idea. Many posts on this site about how letting Hitler get away with invading the Saar and Sudentenland was a terrible idea and lead directly to his increase in power and eventually WWII. How is this different? Yip-yip is an enemy. Best we start treating him like one.

India-Pakistan
Nawaz Sharif's transfer to Sharif Medical City deferred on his request
[DAWN] Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif
...served two three non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf, then by the courts...
, who had earlier been discharged on his request from Lahore's Services Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS), changed his mind on Tuesday evening and requested that he spend the night at the hospital, a member of the medical board said.

Nawaz was to be shifted to Sharif Medical City Hospital, but since the release orders for his daughter Maryam Nawaz could not be obtained from Lahore High Court, the former premier decided to delay his departure from the hospital so the two could leave together.

MARYAM'S BAIL
Maryam Nawaz has also been under treatment at the Services Hospital since October 23, a day after her father was admitted.

She is awaiting her release on bail in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case after the LHC had granted her request a day earlier.

The PML-N leader has been ordered to furnish two surety bonds, each worth Rs10 million, and deposit an additional Rs70million and surrender her passport to secure her release.

Iraqi PM says protesters demands are ‘legitimate’ but warns of ‘the unknown’
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi described on Tuesday the demands of the protesters as legitimate but warned that the situation across the country "could be heading toward the unknown."

In a televised speech, Abdul Mahdi said that the protests which erupted in early October are rightful and in the right direction, adding that these protests pointed to accumulated mistakes that were made since 2003.

He said that "many economic and social mistakes have not been properly and radically addressed."

"There are legitimate demands for the resignation of the government," said Abdul Mahdi.

But he warned that the situation across the country could be heading "toward the unknown."

Abdul Mahdi said there is a need for a constitutional amendment, adding this amendment could amount to a change in the political system.

Earlier in the day, Abdul Mahdi appealed to protesters to suspend their movement, which he said had achieved its goals and was hurting the economy.

He said he is willing to resign if politicians agree on a replacement and vowed a number of reforms. But protesters say that is not enough and the entire political class needs to go.

Satellite images released by ImageSat International (ISI) on Monday showed a convoy of trucks passing through the crossing from the Iraqi town of Al Qaim into Syria’s Al Bukamal, the only crossing between the two countries controlled by government forces after Iraqi security forces retook the border post near the town of Al Qaim in late 2017.

Situatiated in Iraq’s restive Anbar province on one side and Syria’ Deir Ezzor province, al-Qaim is an area which is under the control of pro-Iranian Shiite militias who are handled by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds force.

ISI first released images of work on the new border crossing in May, with a site likely to be used as a storage compound for vehicles, equipment and possibly weapons. A neighboring structure was said to have been built at the end of 2018.

In September Fox News reported that Iran was building a classified military base near al-Bukamal, less than 200 miles from an American position with the intention to house thousands of troops.

According to the report, the classified Iranian project is called the Imam Ali compound and is being completed by the IRGC. At least five different newly constructed buildings surrounded by large dirt mounds could house precision missiles, Fox said. The other 10 less fortified storehouses in the base will likely hold ammunition.

"The construction of the new military compound began in recent months and is in advanced stages of construction," read a report by ISI which reviewed the images. "It is probably that the base construction will be completed over the next few months and will be operational shortly afterwards."

Iran has for years been trying to establish a 1,200 km. length land bridge from Tehran to the Mediterranean, a major concern for Israel which since 2013 has been carrying out a "war-between-wars" campaign aimed at preventing Iran from reaching its goal.

A top defense official has said that stopping Hezbollah’s precision missile program is the State of Israel’s top priority, just after working to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear capability, followed by preventing Iranian entrenchment in various Middle Eastern countries.

Both Israel and the US have warned that Iran and their proxy militias are a major threat to stability in the region and hope to weaken Iran’s growing influence across the Middle East and Persian Gulf.

Fatah's Mohammed Dahlan indicates he will run in PA elections
We were wondering about those elections Palestinian “president” Mahmoud Abbas promised in September. It turns out they are still in the consultation phase.
[Jpost] Deposed Fatah leader Mohammed Dahlan has hinted that he will run in the next Paleostinian presidential election.

"If elections take place, I have the right to present my candidacy anywhere I wish," he said in an interview with the Middle East Broadcasting Center (MBC) television network. "The question of whether I practice my right or not is another issue. My hope ‐ and I will fight for it ‐ is that we have a system based on partnership, and I will push for this to happen."

Jordan to return its ambassador to Israel after prisoner exchange deal
[Ynet] Israeli government confirm the release of the 2 Jordanian nationals after an earlier statement by a senior Israeli official who said the pair are to be freed as gesture of goodwill; the kingdom's foreign minister claims they are to be released by ’end of the week’

Israel says Jordan will return its ambassador to Israel in the coming days, after an agreement has been reached for the release of two Jordanian nationals currently held in adminstrative detention in Israel.

Jordan recalled its ambassador on Tuesday over the refusal of the Israeli government to release Hiba Labadi
...also spelt Heba al-Labadi, though not in our archives, who was accused of a connection to Hizb’allah...
and Abdul Rahman Miri, who Jordan said had been illegally arrested without charge a few months ago.

"An agreement was reached between the countries for the transfer of the two Jordanians arrested in Israel to the Jordanian security forces," said Prime Minister's Office in a statement. "The head of the Shin Bet agreed on the terms of the transfer with his Jordanian counterpart," it added.

"Israel views the relationship between Jordan and Israel as a cornerstone of regional stability and will continue to act to ensure the region's security."

National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat also confirmed the release after visiting Jordan, the pair are to be released as a gesture of goodwill. In addition, one of the detainees, who'd been on hunger strike for several weeks is said to have begun eating again.

Hours earlier, Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said two of its citizens detained by Israel after crossing into the West Bank would return to Jordan "before the end of the week".

"The government pursued the case from the start under direct instructions from His Majesty King Abdullah to take all necessary steps to release them whatever that may cost," Safadi said on his Twitter account.

Labadi, 24, was arrested in August after crossing to the West Bank to attend a family wedding. She subsequently went on a hunger strike and was hospitalized after her health deteriorated.

Miri, 29, was arrested last September after he also crossed into the West Bank to visit relatives.

Safadi said last month he held the Israeli government responsible for the lives of the two, adding that their health had severely deteriorated and warned the kingdom could escalate its actions if they were not released.

Israel's deputy foreign minister, Tzipi Hotovely, said at the time both detainees were suspected of security offences, without being more specific.

Israel mainly uses administrative detention against Paleostinians suspected of anti-Israeli activities.

It says the measure, which human rights

Air Force to test StarLInk on an AC-130 gunship!
[SpaceNews] A program known as Defense Experimentation Using the Commercial Space Internet, or DEUCSI, recently tried out SpaceX’s Starlink satellite broadband services and demonstrated download speeds of 610 megabits per second into the cockpit of a C-12J Huron twin-engine turboprop aircraft.

“That’s a large number,” program manager Brian Beal said Nov. 5 during a conference call with reporters.

Beal said he could not comment on how Starlink’s data throughput compares to other services but said the connectivity is considerably faster than what most Air Force users have today.

“Between SpaceX and other competitors the numbers we can expect are significantly higher than what we were used to in the past,” Beal said.

Upcoming Air Force tests

Beal, the program manager, said the Air Force next week will install a Starlink terminal on an AC-130 gunship aircraft to test the service. Next spring a similar test will be conducted on a KC-135 aerial refueling tanker.

“We are setting up prototypes so we are ready as soon as the commercial offers are ready,” he said.

The Air Force Space Command is responsible for the procurement of commercial satellite communications. The work accomplished by the DEUCSI experiments will be shared with that office, Beal said. “We provide them information to help them prepare for those leases.”

Iran bans cooperation with British Council, warns of prosecution
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Iran’s intelligence ministry on Tuesday said that any cooperation with the British Council was banned and would result in prosecution, the ministry’s website reported.

"Britannia ... was planning to implement a project for cultural networking purposes in cooperation with the British Council in Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
... any cooperation with the British Council is prohibited and will result in prosecution," the ministry said in a statement.

In August, Iran’s Supreme Court upheld a 10-year prison sentence for spying against an Iranian woman, Aras Amiri, who worked for the British Council in London.

Amiri was arrested last year during a family visit to Iran.

Journalists quit Lebanon paper over anti-protest stance
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Four journalists have resigned from Leb’s pro-Hezbollah newspaper al-Akhbar over the daily’s stance on an unprecedented wave of anti-government protests.

One journalist announced her resignation last week, another on Monday and two more followed suit on Tuesday, explaining their decision on social media.

One of them, leading economic journalist Mohammed Zbib, said he "resigned to protest against the newspaper management’s attitude towards the uprising."

Since October 17, hundreds of thousands of Lebanese have taken to the streets to demand better living conditions and a wholesale change of Leb’s corrupt and sectarian political system.

Al-Akhbar is among the most read and respected newspapers in Leb, including by those who do not share its political leanings.

Over the years, it has consistently produced pioneering coverage of the economic hardships faced by Leb’s least privileged, a key driver of the ongoing protests.

When the protests erupted nearly three weeks ago, initially over a proposed tax on phone calls via messaging apps, al-Akhbar threw its weight behind the movement.

However,
a woman is only as old as she admits...
protesters’ grievances swiftly grew to demand the resignation of the entire ruling elite and a complete overhaul of a system that has returned the same politicians to power for decades.
